Derrick rolled over to his side of the bed. The alarm had not gone off yet and he sat up and looked toward the large window, it was still dark outside. He rolled his head and looked at the clock on the night stand on Ty’s side of the bed. It was just about 5 a.m. He scooted to the edge of the bed on his side and stood, stretching and then went into the bathroom, closing the door before turning on the light. He used the toilet and then went to the sink. He looked at himself in the mirror and chuckled.

“He didn’t say anything about it at all.” Derrick said to his reflection softly. He wondered about the two day growth of beard that was on his face. He hadn’t shaved since they had gotten married last Friday. He smiled and decided that maybe it was time for another change. He started the water in the sink. He brushed his teeth all the while staring at himself. He spit and then rinsed, putting the toothbrush back. He pulled out his razor and cream and made a decision.

Stepping out of the shower, he dried himself and rehung the towel. He looked at himself one last time and nodded. He wanted to be quiet and not wake Ty. He reached for the doorknob and turned off the light. He came out and went to the larger dresser, pulling out underwear and socks. He slipped them on quietly then went to the closet. He quietly opened the door and stepped into it, turning on the light as he closed the door.

The closet was somewhat large and walk-in, although narrow. He selected his clothes for the day. Slipping on a pair of dark slacks and then a dark satiny button down, he dressed. He slipped on a pair of dark loafers. He looked at the full length mirror and checked his look. He played with his hair a bit, and swept the curl of his longer bangs, flipping it back. He nodded once and turned off the light as he opened the door. He gathered his things off the dresser, wallet, keys, and looked over at his sleeping husband. He smiled before walking out of the room. He went to the kitchen.

Conner got up and went into the bathroom. He showered quickly and then dressed, picked up his phone and went to the door, unlocking it, then went out into the long wide hallway. He just wanted to get out of here and get back to town. Last night had kind of unnerved him a little. He had had a nightmare about Cynthia Stewart and it made him shudder as he recalled it as he went down the wide staircase to the ground floor.

“Good morning, Mr. Van Owen.” A lady from the house staff dressed in a formal black uniform with an apron said from the bottom of the stairs as he came close to her.

“Good morning.” Conner said with a smile.

“Mr. Platt is in the dining room, sir.” She said.

“Thank you, but I was wondering, have you seen Brian, his driver this morning?” Conner asked.

“I have not yet, sir, I’m sorry.” She said.

“That’s alright. Uh, which way is the dining room?” Conner asked.

“If you’ll follow me, sir.” She said and turned. Conner followed and was led to a set of tall double doors. She opened one for him and stepped out of the way.

“Thank you.” Conner said to her and she nodded lightly. Conner stepped into the gigantic room with again, tall ceilings, painted frescos in them as well as on the walls, countryside’s, rolling hills, it was a bit overwhelming. But to top it all off over the incredibly long table, there was a crystal chandelier that was impressive all on its own.

“Conner, good morning.” The voice said from across the room, “Please, come and join us.” Platt said as Conner saw him at the far end of the table now. There were a few others there near the seated Platt. Conner started walking toward them all noting that they were all looking toward him from their own chairs. The table was incredibly long and could seat probably up to forty people comfortably.

“Good morning.” Conner said as neared them all. A few he recognized from yesterday at the party.

“Would you care for breakfast?” Platt asked. And then Conner saw her, Cynthia Stewart, sitting on the opposite side of the table to Platt’s left, smiling like a spider ready to spring on the proverbial fly. Conner held his cool and his composure.

“Thank you, but no.” Conner said, stopping near the group. Platt looked at him and raised an eyebrow slightly.

“You should really eat something, my boy. I noticed last night that you really didn’t eat much.” Platt said, “Did you sleep well?”

“Not nearly enough. I had my ups and downs.” Conner said and looked at Cynthia Stewart slightly. He thought for a moment that she was going to melt.

“I’m sorry to hear that, Conner. I thought the room would be comfortable enough for you.” Platt said.

“Oh, the room was very comfortable, thank you. I just have a hard time sleeping in a different bed is all.” Conner said and now focused directly on Platt, “I was wondering if your driver was back yet. I really need to get to my office to complete everything.”

“Yes, I’m sure you do.” Platt said. He looked over to his right, “Miriam?” Platt asked toward one of the staff.

“Yes, Mr. Platt?” She asked, turning with her hands in front of her.

“Would you see if Brian has returned for Mr. Van Owen, please?”

“Right away, sir.” She said and nodded, hurrying away to another door.

“Please, join us, Conner.” Platt said and indicated toward the chair Conner was standing at, “At least have some coffee until Brian is available.”

“I suppose I could, thank you.”

“What would you care to have in your coffee, sir?” A pretty young girl in a formal uniform asked at Conner’s elbow. She seemingly appeared out of nowhere.

“Uh, just black, thank you.” Conner said as he sat down.

“So, shall we talk a little business before you are on your way, Conner?” Platt asked as he shifted in his seat a bit.

“Fuck.” Ty muttered with a growl as he rolled partially to his back and fumbled to silence the alarm that was blaring behind him. He smacked the top bar without looking and it silenced, “Goddam.” Ty mumbled as he rolled into his pillow, folding it over his head, “I hate fucking alarms.” He said into the pillow and growled, “Time to get up, babe.” He lifted the pillow off his head after not hearing a reply, “Babe?” Ty asked and lifted his head, opening only one eye. He looked across the bed that was empty, “Fuck, he’s gone? Already?” Ty rolled to his back, tossing the pillow, “Did you even give me a kiss?!” Ty yelled into the air, “I guess we really are married, huh?”

Ty tossed back the sheet and got out of bed. He went around the foot and went into the bathroom. He used the toilet and then went to the sink. He looked at himself in the mirror and raised an eyebrow, “What are lookin’ at, loser? You’re the one that has to go to work.” He said to himself. He rolled his eyes, “Ugh, I need coffee.” Ty said and walked out of the bathroom. He came up the hallway and turned right into the kitchen. He went to the coffee machine and pulled out a cup out of the cabinet. He went to put it in and saw the note folded and resting on the plate where you put the cup. Ty raised an eyebrow. He pulled the note and opened it.

“Hey,

I went into the office early. Hope you don’t mind. I wanted to say good luck today.

You were sleeping so good and looked so hot, but I didn’t want to disturb you. I’ll

make it up to you tonight when I get home. You have a great day and knock them

dead, because I know you can.

D”

“If you weren’t so fucking gorgeous and so sweet, I might be pissed at you.” Ty said as he put his cup into the machine and then pressed the brew button. He waited a minute and the life giving liquid appeared in the cup. He pulled it and let out a long sigh, lifting the cup. He took in a breath and closed his eyes as he took the cup away from his lips, “I hope I survive this.” Ty said letting out the breath. He turned and headed back to the bedroom.

Showered and dressed for the day, Ty left the bedroom after making the bed and went out the back door, closing it behind him. He had locked it and pulled his house key off his ring as he went out to the structure. He wanted to give it Aiden in case he came home from work first. Ty went to the man door and opened it, looking in slowly. The lamps on the night stands on each side of the bed were still on. Ty smiled as he saw the most beautiful sight. He came into the structure and crossed it to the bed. ‘Looks like they had fun last night’ Ty thought to himself. He stopped at the foot of the bed, ‘Fuck, they’re so hot.’ Ty thought as he stood at the foot of the bed. He wanted to take a picture, but thought better of it. Then he shook his head, ‘This is just too perfect’ he said to himself and pulled his phone, ‘I’ll embarrass him with it later’. Ty wiggled his eyebrows as he pulled his phone, lifting it and snapped a picture of the two young naked bodies below, ‘Yeah, perfect’. Ty closed his phone and moved to the side of the bed where Aiden lay.

Aiden lay on his left side, his right arm draped over Greg’s back as Aiden was spooned close to him. Greg was lying face down on his stomach, their faces close to one another. The sheet and spread of the bed was just below Greg’s perfect ass as well as Aiden’s. Ty leaned down and got close to Aiden’s ear.

“Aiden…Aiden…” Ty said softly, “Hey, buddy.” Ty whispered and put a hand to Aiden’s naked shoulder. He shook him gently. Aiden took in a deep breath through his nose and his eyes fluttered. He smiled as focused on the sleeping Greg next to him, “Hey, bud.” Ty said softly. Aiden turned his head and focused on the voice and realized who it was and almost went into a panic, “Easy, bud, it’s okay.” Ty whispered.

“Uncle T.” Aiden whispered. Ty smiled and flashed his eyes. Ty leaned closer to Aiden’s ear.

“Wanted to tell you I was leaving for work and to have you get up. I’m leaving you a house key in case you get home before me. Make sure you lock up the house and the studio when you leave. Here’s twenty bucks for gas.” Ty whispered and put a bill on the night stand.

“I’m sorry we’re…” Aiden whispered realizing that he and Greg were naked and exposed.

“Dude, it’s fine, don’t worry.” Ty whispered and flashed his eyes again, “He’s really hot.” Ty whispered and smiled. Aiden smiled, “Don’t be late for your Uncle Bart.”

“I won’t. Thanks for the gas money.”

“Love you, buddy.” Ty whispered and kissed Aiden’s temple, “Have a good day, huh?”

“You too.” Aiden whispered. Ty walked away toward the man door. Aiden rolled his head and looked at his lover that was lying there next to him sleeping and smiled. He nuzzled in closer to Greg.

Alec woke to birds singing outside in the gardens of the villa. He took in a deep breath and stretched and was totally warm. He let out the breath and lowered his arms. He went to get up and almost jumped as he realized that he wasn’t alone in the bed. He looked to his right and there was a sleeping little body. Alec smiled. He looked left and saw the angelic face of Sophie also in the bed facing him. He carefully and slowly got out of bed, slinking up on the pillows a bit and then climbed out of the sheets and from under the duvet. He went down the middle of the bed and came off at the foot as the door of the room slowly opened. He turned and looked and smiled.

Madame Julienne came in carrying a tray with a coffee carafe and a cup as she did every morning. She looked at Alec and he lifted a finger and put it to his lips. She gave him a questioning look after setting down the tray and came close to him as he pointed at the bed.

“What are they doing in here?” She whispered.

“They came to the door late last night and were scared. I guess Chevelle and Robert were arguing from what the kids said. I put them to bed with me.” Alec whispered.

“They are both so sweet.”

“Yeah, they are. They make me miss my nieces and nephews. They would crawl into bed with me when I was still living at home. I really miss that.” Alec whispered.

“The blessings of children. They know who will keep them safe.” Madame Julienne whispered. There was a soft knock on the door. Alec turned and saw Chevelle standing there looking in. Alec waved her in with a hand and a smile.

“Did they come to you in the night?” Chevelle asked as she stepped up next to Alec.

“Yeah. They were scared of the dark.”

“They weren’t any trouble, were they?” She whispered.

“They were perfect little angels and went right to sleep.” Alec whispered.

“I am so sorry that they bothered you.” Chevelle said.

“They were no bother at all and no need to be sorry. It was nice to have the company. I’ve never slept as good since I’ve been here. We listened to the crickets for a bit and then they were out.” Alec whispered.

“Really?” Chevelle asked. Alec just smiled and nodded as they stared at the sleeping little ones, “I want to thank you for looking after them.”

“It was my pleasure. They have been the highlight of this trip for me.” Alec whispered and he heard a soft whimper. He looked and Chevelle was dropping tears, “Hey, hey, it’s okay.” Alec whispered as he turned, putting a hand on her delicate shoulder. She turned into him and buried her face in his bare chest.

“I’m sorry.” Chevelle whispered as her mother came up next to her.

“Chevelle, come with me.” Madame Julienne whispered, “The children will be fine here.”

“Let them sleep as long as they want.” Alec whispered as he put his hands on the delicate shoulders, “They’ll be alright here, I promise.” Alec whispered and she tilted her head up to look at him. He smiled and saw the tears on her cheeks. He kissed her forehead and pat her shoulder gently.

“Come, Chevelle.” Madame Julienne whispered, taking her daughter by the shoulders and guided her out of the room. Alec watched them leave and then looked back at the children for a moment, still sleeping peacefully in the bed. He went over and poured coffee for himself and then took it out on the balcony to stand in the glorious morning sun and gentle warm breeze.

“Good morning, Daddy.” Victoria said as she came to the head of the table. She gave her father a kiss on his cheek and then looked over at everyone else at the table, “Good morning everyone.”

“Good morning.” Was said by all except for Conner. He sipped his coffee and just wanted to get out of here so bad. Victoria came to him and pulled out the chair next to him and sat down.

“And how are you this morning, Mr. Van Owen?” Victoria asked with formality and a smile as she nuzzled a little close to him.

“I’m fine, thank you, Miss Platt.” Conner said as he smirked and sipped the last of his coffee. Breakfast was served to Victoria by one of the staff. She dropped a napkin in her lap. More coffee was poured for Conner by the young girl from before.

“Thank you, Sarah.” Victoria said. The young girl nodded. Victoria looked at Conner as she picked up her fork, “How did you sleep?”

“On and off.” Conner said. He noticed out of the corner of his eye that were under the scrutiny of Cynthia Stewart but rather covertly.

“I’m sorry to hear that. I have slept in that bed before and found it to be very comfortable.” Victoria said.

“There was no problem with the bed, it was with me.” Conner said and picked up his coffee cup.

“Oh, was something keeping you up all night?” Victoria asked in a playful tone.

“Not what you might think.” Conner said. He smiled toward Victoria and flashed his eyes.

“Make sure you leave me your number before you go. I want to stay in touch.” Victoria whispered to him. Conner smiled and nodded slightly.

“Give me your phone.” Conner said. Victoria pulled it from her pocket and handed it over to him. Conner opened it and input his number and contact information quickly. He handed the phone back to Victoria.

“Ready to have that talk, Conner?” Platt asked as he rose from his chair.

“Certainly, sir.” Conner said. He rose from his chair and stepped away from the table. Platt was walking his way. Conner touched Victoria’s shoulder with a couple of fingers. Cynthia Stewart narrowed her eyes in seeing it.

“Let’s go to my study.” Platt said walking by Conner, who turned and followed the older man.

The study was more impressive than the dining room. Bookcases and big leather furniture filled it. One large window was behind the sprawling desk that stood on legs and Conner smiled as it reminded him of his father’s own study back home. This room was meant to intimidate, there was no question about it, but unlike his own father’s study, this room had a bit of a different air to it, almost warm and inviting in a way, and smelled that way as well, old leather, shellac.

“Sit down and make yourself comfortable, Conner.” Platt said as he went to the desk and looked over some paperwork that was laid on it, “Forgive me just a moment if you will. I have to check on some of these reviews.”

“Certainly, I understand.” Conner said and took up a large soft leather chair. He sat down and sank into it. He was immediately comfortable and in love with it.

“They deliver these to me daily and I have to make sure that there is nothing that requires my immediate attention.” Platt said as he read a few pages and moved them about.

“Totally understandable.”

“I’m sure your father does the same thing.” Platt said without looking up.

“As a matter of fact, I know he does. I’ve seen him do it many times actually over the years.” Conner said. Platt looked up and gave a brief smile. He finally stepped around the desk and came over to the chair next to Conner’s and sat down.

“Can I get you anything?”

“No, I’m fine, thank you.”

“Good. I like my guests to be comfortable.” Platt said.

“So, what would you like to discuss?” Conner asked, wanting to get right to it and then get out of here.

“Your employees…I told you that I would hold up my end of the wager we made and I fully intend to. When do you expect your office to closed down fully?” Platt asked.

“By the end of the week. Records will be shipped out to our home office in another day or so, then just last minute details to be handled.” Conner said.

“Excellent. When do you fly out?” Platt asked.

“Day after tomorrow, if not sooner. My flight is open, so whenever really.”

“Wonderful. Have your people report as soon as they can to our HR division and we can begin to make their transition as soon as possible.”

“I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate this, Mr. Platt.” Conner said and sat forward looking at the older man.

“Think nothing of it. It’s really just good business. As you said, with your offices closing here, our company is going to be busier and busier to be certain. One of those reviews on my desk actually indicates that already.” Platt said.

“Then that’s good for you. Congratulations on that.” Conner said.

“But, I am troubled by what you said earlier that you didn’t sleep well. As I said, I like my guests to be comfortable. Were you disturbed last night at all?”

“Uh…no, not really.” Conner said.

“That wasn’t very convincing, Conner. Tell me what happened last night so I can correct anything that might be a problem.” Platt said.

“Uh…there was no problem last night.” Conner stammered slightly.

“I see.” Platt said and paused for a moment, “Do you have a visitor last night perhaps?” Conner went a bit wide eyed with him saying that, “Forgive me, but it seems that you did judging by the look on your face.”

“I assure you, sir, that nothing happened between us. We were merely…”

“Conner, you’re assuming that I would be upset. Rest assured that I’m not. Actually, I was going to ask you if it was…alright.” Platt said. Conner was more than confused.

“Excuse me?” Conner asked. A father that seemed to be asking if his daughter was alright in THAT way? What the fuck?

“I have a confession to make and probably owe you an apology as well. You see, we’ve had a history ourselves and not that I’m trying to compare notes as it were with you but…” Platt said.

“Wait a second, hold on. What are we talking about?” Conner asked as he sat forward.

“Cynthia.” Platt said and looked confused himself. Conner laughed and sat back in the chair, “What’s so funny?”

“Whew.” Conner said and sat forward again, “You scared me for a second.”

“What do you mean?” Platt asked.

“I thought you were talking about Victoria.”

“What?” Platt asked with a shocked voice.

“Vick came to my room last night and we talked for a little while, just catching up.” Conner said and Platt eased slightly. Conner saw it and knew immediately that Platt was in on it, “But then after a while, there was a knock on the door and it was Cynthia Stewart. She was very forward I must say but I shut the door on her.” Conner said and paused watching the older man carefully, “But you already knew that. So why bring it up?”

“I wanted to find out about my daughter, and you.”

“Then why not just come out and ask me directly or ask your daughter?” Conner asked.

“It didn’t seem to be appropriate.”

“But letting one of your business associate’s wives do it for you is? Don’t you think that’s a little inappropriate?” Conner asked.

“She is means to an end, Conner, plain and simple. And had she been successful, she would have gotten what she wanted as well, a win, win.” Platt said.

“What, a young piece of ass?” Conner asked, “You know, this is fucking sick. All these games and shit you guys play, makes me want to puke.”

“Your father played these games as well. I’m sure he still does.” Platt said.

“Yeah, I’m sure he does, but I don’t.” Conner said and rose to his feet, “I want to thank you for your hospitality, Mr. Platt, but I now have a feeling that that was a set up as well. I’ll see myself out.” Conner turned and went to the door, opening it and stopped. There was Brian the driver, “Perfect timing.”

“I take it you’re ready to go, sir?”

“More than ready.”

“I have your things in the car already.” Brian said.

“Things?” Conner asked.

“From your room, sir.”

“Okay, whatever.” Conner said and followed the man out of the house.

Ty was standing next to Annie Becketts desk as she was going through paperwork for him to fill out. He shifted from foot to foot a couple of times and she finally handed him a stack with a smile. He frowned and she wiggled her eyebrows at him. A couple of the various guys, workers, were in the office and were giving Ty the eye or a side glance as they spoke with another one of the girls.

“You can use that desk over there.” Annie said and pointed to an empty desk near a corner of the office, “It’s going to be yours anyway.”

“What?” Ty asked.

“You have to have some place to do all of your reports.”

“What reports?” Ty asked.

“Mike hasn’t told you?” Annie asked, Ty shook his head, “My dad didn’t tell you?” Ty shook his head again. Annie rolled her eyes with a huff, “They always leave me with this shit to deal with, why?” She asked and Ty threw up his hands in question, “Fine, whatever. Let me find Mike.” She said and got up from her chair, coming around the desk, “I need that all filled out and back to me by the end of the day today, not tomorrow either.” She said sternly and walked off.

“Yes, ma’am.” Ty said softly as he watched her walk away, “Fuck, I’d hate to piss her off.” Ty mumbled to himself. He went over to the desk and sat down. He went through form after form looking them over. Tax crap, emergency contact lists, profit sharing, beneficiary stuff, insurance, “Fuck I hate working for someone else.” Ty muttered and then groaned.

“You need to hire a secretary to do all this stuff for you.” The voice said and Ty looked up from the forms.

“No shit.” Ty said before he realized it was Sam Beckett, his new boss.

“Annie kicking your ass already?” Sam asked. Ty nodded, “Yeah, don’t worry about it.” Sam said, he motioned with his arm, “Come with me, I want to hook you up with Mike real quick and get you guys going before the day’s gone.”

“Right behind you, boss.” Ty said and got up, following the bigger man. They went through the back of the building and Sam reached into his pants pocket and pulled out a ring with a few keys and handed them to Ty.

“These are for you. Keys to the building here, we’ll get you an alarm code later. I don’t want you here too much, you’re more valuable to me out in the field with the guys on the jobs, so with that in mind, you’ll notice another key on that ring.” Sam said as he opened the back door and they stepped out into the back parking lot. He pointed a finger, “They go to that. That’s your new office. You’ll be spending every day in that rather than being here.” Ty was wide eyed at what he saw. It looked brand new. A huge Dodge Ram 2500, white, lumber rack, truck bed tool box, huge tires, the whole package.

“Holy shit.” Ty said softly.

“The first service on it is due in about a month. It’s only got a couple of hundred miles on it. I expect you to keep all the records and to keep track of when it needs stuff done to it. There’s a gas card in the glove box, insurance paperwork and all the other crap as well. You and Mike drive your truck back to your house and you two go off and he can show you what you need to be doing after that.” Sam said. Mike was walking toward them from the parking lot and the truck.

“Wow, gotta say, I’m a little pissed at you, boss.” Mike Pershing said as he walked up to them.

“Yeah, why’s that?” Sam asked.

“New guy, new truck?”

“Well, you know, short timer, I couldn’t give him yours as it’s old, kind of like you.” Sam grinned.

“You’re a jerk, you know that?”

“Yeah, I know.” Sam grinned. He looked over at Ty, “Mike will tell you, all I need is progress reports on the jobs only once a week unless there’s problems, which you need to tell me about right away. You run the jobs how you see fit. I only step in when I get complaints, and when I step in, you’d better be ready, that’s all I gotta say.”

“Fair enough.” Ty said.

“You’ve got a good reputation, I know you’ll be fair and get stuff done. A lot of the guys are looking forward to meeting you already.” Sam said.

“That’s good to hear. I’m looking forward to meeting them as well.” Ty said.

“Alright, you guys get to it. Mike, you make sure you tell him about everything. I don’t want anything left out.”

“I’ll make sure.” Mike said. He smiled at Ty, “So, ready to hit it?”

“You bet.” Ty said.

“Where’s your personal truck?” Mike asked.

“Out front.” Ty said.

“Alright.” Mike said, “We’ll drive yours over to your house and leave it, then go to the first job together, it’s downtown.”

Alec came out of the bathroom fully dressed. He looked over at the bed and saw two bright faces looking at him which made him smile. Both little ones smiled back at him as they sat in the middle of the big bed.

“Well, glad to see you guys are awake.” Alec said, “Did you sleep okay?” They both just nodded, still with their bright smiles, “Good. Your mom and your grandmother were here earlier and saw that you guys were sleeping in here.”

“Was Mama mad?” Sophie asked dropping her smile.

“No, not at all.” Alec said, “I told her what happened last night about you guys being scared. She wasn’t mad at all.”

“Okay.” Sophie said softly.

“I bet your grandmother is making breakfast for you right now down in the kitchen. Why don’t you go down and check?”

“Will you come with us?” Sophie asked.

“I’ll be down in a few minutes. You guys go ahead.” Alec said. The children climbed off the bed and went toward the door. Eadric stopped and looked back at Alec before leaving and giggled a little. Alec winked at him and the boy ran off to join his sister. Alec made the bed as he normally did and picked up his clothes from the bathroom, coming out with them but stopped in his tracks as Robert stood in the doorway. He had a slightly angered look on his face.

“I was told that my children stayed in here last night. Why?” Robert asked. His usually soft voice had a bit of a tone to it this morning.

“Apparently they were scared of the dark last night.” Alec said.

“Why did they come to you and not us?” Robert asked.

“They said they did but heard you and Chevelle arguing. So they knocked on my door.” Alec said.

“I don’t think that’s any of your concern.” Robert said and his flashed a bit more anger.

“I didn’t say it was.” Alec said, “What happens between you and your wife is your business and has nothing to do with me.”

“I think it does have something to do with you and you know perfectly well what it is.” Robert said.

“Look, I’m not trying to start anything or cause problems here.” Alec said.

“But you have, you know you have.” Robert said.

“Maybe in your own mind.” Alec said. Robert came into the room slowly coming toward Alec, “What do you want?”

“You know what I want. Why are you denying that?” Robert came up close in front of Alec.

“Hey, I told you last night, I’m not interested.” Alec said backing up a step. Robert came closer, “I think you should leave.”

“Do you really want me to leave?” Robert asked.

“Yes, I think you should leave, like right now.” Alec said and firmed himself up. He was shaking inside but didn’t want to show it.

“What if I don’t? You know you want me as much as I want you.” Robert said.

“Are you serious?” Alec asked. He dropped the clothes on the floor in front of him. He balled up his fists, “What I want is for you to turn around and walk back out that door.”

“What will you do if I don’t?” Robert asked.

“I don’t want to hit you, but I will.” Alec said, raising his fists a bit.

“You won’t hit me.” Robert said.

“Yeah, and you aren’t fucking me either. So leave…now” Alec said.

“It would be wonderful between us.” Robert said.

“Get the fuck out of here.” Alec said firmly through clenched teeth. Robert paused and looked at Alec’s fists and then back into his eyes seeing the resolve that Alec was showing him. He thought about it for a long moment and Robert’s eyes softened, showing a sadness in them all of a sudden. Alec felt bad for a moment as they looked at each other. Robert turned on his heels and walked toward the door. Alec held his breath until he left the room and then let it out slowly, “What the fuck is wrong with him?” Alec asked himself.

“Morning, boss.” The voice said, making Derrick look up from his computer screen and saw Terry standing in his doorway smiling.

“Morning, Mr. Office Manager. How was your weekend?” Derrick asked.

“Never mind mine, how was yours, Mr. Married Man?” Terry’s smile widened. Derrick chuckled.

“It was good, really good.” Derrick said, “Any problems while I was gone?”

“Not a one. Everyone got everything done, had a good time, and then we closed up.”

“Well, that’s good to hear.” Derrick said and sat back in his chair.

“Tom called and said he would be in a little late this morning. Kim has a few messages for you, some stuff that is only for you, I guess. Claire needs to see you for a few minutes when you have time, but other than that, everything’s good.” Terry said.

“You know, I’m glad you got promoted, bud. You’re really doing an awesome job.” Derrick said.

“Thanks, boss.” Terry smiled, “Gives me that little push to go into the Core and kick Neal’s ass real quick.”

“Did he do something?” Derrick asked.

“Oh, you know Neal, boss, he loves to push my buttons.” Terry said.

“You guys sound like an old married couple.” Derrick chuckled.

“Yeah, we’ve known each other way too long.” Terry bugged his eyes.

“Well, if you need a referee, give me a holler.” Derrick said as he got up from his desk. He walked around it and came toward the door. Terry was still smiling but moved out of his way.

“I like the beard by the way.” Terry said.

“You’re not trying to suck up to me, are you?” Derrick asked as they walked out into the hallway together.

“Would it help?” Terry asked. Derrick chuckled and shook his head. They parted ways as Derrick walked into the front and stopped next to Kim’s desk.

“Oh, good morning, Derrick.” Kim said and did a double take on him.

“Good morning. Terry said you had some messages for me?”

“I like the beard.” Kim said.

“Thanks. I thought I’d try a bit of a new look for a while.” Derrick said.

“Well, it’s a good one.” Kim said, and then grimaced a bit, “You’re not gonna grow it really big and bushy, are you?”

“No.” Derrick said and winced.

“Thank heavens.” Kim said as she handed him his messages. Derrick was looking them over and frowned at one.

“When did Sid call?” Derrick asked.

“Just before we closed up on Friday.” Kim said.

“Okay, thanks.” Derrick said and walked away. He was reading another as he walked toward the back of the office and came to a cubicle, stopping there, “Morning, Claire.” Derrick said. The older lady turned and looked up at him over the top of her glasses.

“Did you run over a cat?” Claire asked.

“I’m sorry?” Derrick asked as he looked her. She was pointing a finger at her own face moving it back and forth with a raised eyebrow, “Don’t like the beard, huh?”

“Well, they’re not for me, that’s for sure. I made my husband shave his off when he tried to grow one once. I told him if he ever tried that again, I’d kill him.” She huffed. Derrick was a little guarded and leaned back a bit.

“Okay.” Derrick said slowly.

“What you do with your face is your business.” She said and turned back to a stack of papers, pulling out a couple and then handed them to Derrick, “It seems we have a couple of little problems.”

“What’s the problem?” Derrick asked as he looked at the two small spreadsheets in his hand.

“One is an overpayment.” Claire said, “That one from Beckett.” She said as she pointed, “The other is from JBL Corporation. I don’t have an invoice out for them. Who are they?” Claire asked. Derrick growled in his throat.

“Did Tom give you anything to bill out under the name Van Owen?” Derrick asked.

“Not that I recall.” Claire said and opened a folder on her computer that showed clients alphabetically, “How long ago?”

“A couple of months at the most.” Derrick said.

“No, I have nothing.” She said and looked back at Derrick.

“Alright, I’ll talk to him about it when he gets in. Mind if I keep this?” Derrick asked.

“It’s worthless to me right now.” She said, “What do you want to do about Beckett?”

“I’ll call Sam and see what’s up. Who’s the girl over there that does payables?”

“Rita or something like that.” Claire said.

“Alright, hang on to this. I’ll call him and let you know. Do you have anything that you need signed to go out?” Derrick asked.

“No, everything is caught up.” She said.

“Okay, thanks.” Derrick said, turning to walk away. She stood up from her desk.

“Derrick.” She said softly. He stopped and turned back to face her, “I just wanted to say that…well…congratulations.”

“Thanks, Claire.” Derrick said with a smile. She threw her arms around his neck and hugged him tight, a first for her.

“You’re a very brave man to do what you did. I just want to say, it makes me proud to work here and to work for you.” She said softly. He pat her back gently.

“That means a lot, thank you.”

“Now, get out of here.” She said as she let him go, She waved a hand to shoo him away, “I’ve got things to do.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Derrick said with a smile. He turned and walked away. Several others in the office went out of their way to say hello to him. He spoke with all of them as he made his way back to his office, leaving the door open as he always did. He sat down at his desk and picked up the phone and dialed. It rang a couple of times, “May I speak with Sam Beckett, please? Derrick Jacobson. Thank you.”

Ty pulled up in front of an old brick building downtown, Mike Pershing sat in the passenger seat of the truck. Ty parked on the street at the curb. A huge dumpster was in front of the old building and the truck. Mike had been telling Ty about this project on the drive over from the house but to Ty it seemed that Mike didn’t have much enthusiasm about it. Ty thought he would find for himself and not pre-judge the project with what he said. Mike had mentioned that there were three guys working on it from Beckett which seemed a bit odd to Ty from the description of the size of the project, a multi-story complete renovation. They got out and went up to the front of the building, stopping before they went in.

“I want to check in with the electrician really quick. He should be around back. Why don’t you go in and introduce yourself to the guys.” Mike said.

“Sure.” Ty said as he went in through a heavy plywood door marked as ‘Do Not Enter, Construction’ as Mike walked around the old building. Ty stepped in and looked around and was shocked at what he saw. There was debris everywhere, old bricks, hulked out timbers, old plank flooring. It was a huge hazard for safety. He could hear grunts and talking. He stepped around an open stud wall and saw three men struggling to put up a steel I beam on their own. He walked closer to where they were working and saw what they were trying to do. It’s a wonder they hadn’t been hurt or killed yet.

“Hey, what the fuck are you guys doing?” Ty asked loudly. The three men stopped what they were doing and looked over their shoulders.

“You need to get your ass out of here.” One of them said.

“Yeah? Well, you guys first.” Ty said still with shocked eyes, “Get that beam down before you get hurt.”

“Who the fuck are you?” One of the other guys asked, still holding the big beam.

“I’m Ty…Ty Caldwell.”

“This is a construction area, dude, you shouldn’t be in here.” The last guy said.

“And from here, it looks like you guys shouldn’t be either. You trying to get yourselves killed?” Ty asked.

“Listen, dude, I don’t know who the fuck you think you are, but we’ve got to get this done.” The guy in the middle said.

“Well, let me tell who the fuck I am. I’m the new foreman.” Ty said getting closer, “Now, put that beam down, and I mean right now.” Ty said coolly and collectively. The three looked at each other, “Yeah, now it’s starting to dawn on you, isn’t it?” Ty asked.

“Where’s Mike?” One of them asked.

“He’s out back with the electrician.” Ty said, “Now, put that beam down before you get hurt.” The three worked to slowly get one end of the beam down and rest it on a pile of debris. They watched for a second so it didn’t move and then looked at Ty, “You gonna leave it like that?” Ty asked.

“It’ll stay.” One of them said. Ty shook his head.

“You guys come with me.” Ty said, turning around and started walking toward the front of the building.

“But, we’ve got…” One of them said.

“You guys come with me.” Ty said more firmly over his shoulder. The three started walking after him, keeping their heads down a little. Ty stopped near the heavy plywood door. He turned around and looked at the three as they came close to him. The door opened behind Ty and Mike stepped in.

“Oh, hey, Mike.” One of the guys said.

“Julio.” Mike said, looking at the three as they looked like they were whipped puppies, “What’s going on?”

“Ask him.” Julio said nodding toward Ty. Ty looked at Mike.

“You see the condition of this place?” Ty asked. Mike looked around with just his eyes, “I came in and these guys are wrestling to put up an I beam, no hard hats, no eye protection, no gloves, and they’re climbing around on top of debris. None of this is safe, none of it.” Ty’s voice was even all the way through, “They’re gonna get themselves killed.”

“We always work like this.” One of the other guys said with a bit of a tone. Ty turned on him and just glared.

“You guys know better.” Mike said and their eyes shifted toward him, “I’ve told you before myself. This is Ty Caldwell, he’s the new foreman and project manager. What he says goes from now on. You don’t listen to him, it’s his call what he wants to do.”

“You guys got hard hats?” Ty asked. Three sets of eyes looked at him, “Well?” They all nodded, “Then get ‘em on. Grab your gloves and glasses while you’re at it too.” They walked away to a corner inside the building, “I’ll go grab mine out of the truck.” Ty said to Mike and walked out. He came back in a couple of minutes later and looked at the three of them.

“Tell them what you want.” Mike said, then held up his hands, “Play like I’m not even here.” He backed away from the group.

“Alright, let’s start again.” Ty said, “I’m Ty Caldwell.” He held out his hand in front of him.

“I’m Julio.”

“Good to meet you, Julio.” Ty said as he shook his hand.

“I’m Rodrigo.” Another said and leaned forward extending his hand, “But they all call me Rod.”

“Good to meet you, Rod.” Ty said as he shook his hand.

“Mario.” The last one said softly.

“How you doing, Mario?” Ty asked as he shook his hand. The three all stood in front of him, “I don’t know how long you guys have been doing this and right now, I don’t really care. So, let me tell you how this is going to work. First, you’re gonna work safely. I don’t want any of you hurt. And I sure as hell don’t want to have to go to one of your houses and tell your family that you’re in the hospital or worse, dead. Second, on my job sites, you keep them clean. I don’t want any trip hazards or anything lying around that you can get hurt from. You good so far?” Ty asked and they all nodded, “Good, because if I see it or hear of it, we’re gonna have a private conversation behind a dumpster, you understand?” They all nodded again, “If you can’t work like that, boom, hit the road and go someplace else. We good so far?” They all nodded, “Now, speaking of dumpsters, is that big one out there full?” They shook their heads. Ty looked around at all the debris and crap again then looked back at them, “So, I guess the maid hasn’t shown up yet, huh?” The three just looked at him, “So I guess that makes you guys it, doesn’t it? Let me ask you a question, when was the last time Sam was here?”

“Uh, about a week ago. He checked on the demo and then left.” Julio said.

“Yeah.” Ty said and shook his head, “Well guess what? I’m gonna be here every fuckin’ day. And judging by the looks of this place, you’re gonna need at least three days just to get everything out of here and into that dumpster and probably another one or two of those as well. Come with me.” Ty said and walked back over to where the beam was resting, “You guys are struggling to get this up into place. I don’t see any jacks, bracing, framing, anything. You guys know how to do this?” Ty asked and they nodded, “Well? Where’s the stuff you need?”

“Out back in the container.” Rod said.

“Out back in the container.” Ty said and stepped up to the beam. He ducked underneath it and went to the other side, “I’m not trying to be a dick, guys. I just want you to be able to go home at the end of the day without being hurt.” Ty said, “Are we clear?” They all nodded, “Now, back up.” Ty said. The three backed up a couple of steps. Ty got up underneath the beam and lifted it. Every muscle and vein in his body popped and bulged. Three sets of eyes bugged as the beam moved, Ty taking the entire weight, lowering the beam out of the pocket and set it down, “Now, get this place empty. I’m coming back in the morning and I want to see progress. We good?” Ty asked. Three sets of eyes were still bugged and heads slowly nodded, “Alright, good to meet you guys. Work safely. I’ll see you in the morning.” Ty said and walked away from them.

Conner walked out the front door of the house, which was held by one of the staff, another slight head nod as he went by being led by Brian, the driver. Conner kept thinking to himself that it was like visiting the White House or something like that as they walked down to the car that was in the driveway. Brian went to the rear passenger door and opened it, holding it for Conner.

“You’re just leaving without saying goodbye?” Victoria said from the front door as she came down the broad sweeping steps. Conner turned and looked back at her, waiting for her to come up to him.

“Sorry, Vick.” Conner said, “I was going to call you later.”

“So, again you just walk out of my life.” Victoria said stopping in front of him. Brian let go of the door and went around the front to the driver’s side and climbed in.

“No, it’s not like that. I just have to get out of here.” Conner said.

“What happened?”

“I…was having a talk with your father. It was very revealing but pissed me off.” Conner said.

“Did it have to do with Cynthia?” Victoria asked. Conner nodded.

“Do you know he actually admitted to sending her to my room last night just to find out if anything was going with us?” Conner asked.

“Are you kidding me? Why didn’t he just ask?”

“Fuck if I know. This whole thing is just fucking sick, all the way around.” Conner said.

“I agree.” Victoria said.

“I’m just sorry you’ve got to be left here to deal with it.” Conner said.

“Well, not for long.”

“What do you mean?” Conner asked.

“You got me to thinking last night. I see what you have, with your guy. And you were right when you said I’d find someone.” Victoria said, “And actually, there is someone, but it didn’t occur to me until I went back to my room and saw this picture that I have on my dresser. It’s been staring at me the whole time.”

“Not your bratwurst boyfriend, Ernst, is it? Because I’d be real disappointed.” Conner asked with a smirk.

“No, you big jerk.” Victoria said and slugged his arm, “His name is Hans. We went to school together at the university. He was always there, always had that look in his eyes when we were together. He was always so sweet. I owe it all to you, well, actually to your man that you have after you showed that picture of him, those eyes of his, they’re like Hans’, expressive, piercing. So, I called him.” She said and smiled.

“You called him last night?” Conner asked and she nodded.

“We talked for hours. He wants me to meet up with him.” She said with a shrug, “Who knows what it will lead to, but I just wanted to say thank you to you. You gave me the idea really. Now, go get your stuff done and get back to that hot guy before I make a play for him.” She smiled.

“Yeah, that’s not gonna happen.” Conner said and got slugged again. He chuckled, “I’ve missed you, Vick. It was really good to see you again.”

“Let’s stay in touch, okay?” She asked and Conner nodded with a smile, “Who knows, if it works out with Hans, maybe we’ll come to the States and visit.”

“That’d be great. But better yet, let’s get together in the south of France. Alec loves the villa. I’m gonna see if I can buy it from my father so we always have a place to go.” Conner said.

“Perfect. Alright, let me know.” Victoria said. She threw her arms around his neck, “Can I kiss you, Conner Van Owen?”

“Sure, what the fuck.” Conner smirked as he put his arms around her waist. They kissed, but it was only friendly, not like lovers. She let him go and slugged his arm again playfully.

“Get out of here, jerk.” She said with a smile.

“Damn you’re bossy.”

“I’m a woman, we’re allowed.” She said as Conner climbed into the car.

“Poor Hans. I don’t even know him and I feel sorry for him already.” Conner grinned and watched her eyes bug and flash. Conner laughed as she slammed the car door, chuckling herself. She watched the car drive away down the long driveway, waving only once before turning back to the house. She saw her father standing there in the doorway and walked by him with a scowl and not saying a word to him. He lowered his head slightly.

“Hey, let’s take a break, boys.” Bart said as he looked at both Seth and Aiden. All of them had been working hard to get this house replumbed. Thankfully it was empty right now, the owners had scheduled the job while they were on a vacation. Bart had explained it to the owners carefully that there would be no water for a couple of days at least. The old pipes of the house kept breaking or leaking and Bart was actually tired of getting the calls from them to come and fix another section or area. He told them again and again they would be money ahead if he just replumbed it for them. Finally, they relented.

Bart noticed right away this morning that both boys were sticking close together as they all worked. He knew that they missed each other and what was going with Aiden with Seth’s phone call. He was so pissed off at his sister, the boys’ mother, at how she had been about all this over Aiden. Bart loved both boys as if they were his own, but kept growing madder and madder the more he thought about his sister and what she had done, not to mention her slob boyfriend had been there, who Bart couldn’t stand. He didn’t know though what had actually happened and it was killing him to find out as Seth wouldn’t tell him. He wanted to get Aiden alone to talk to him but didn’t want to unnerve him either.

Aiden, being the older of the two boys, was always so sweet and looked after his younger brother, was so patient with Seth and taught him, or showed him what they were doing until Seth understood it fully. Aiden always made Bart smile as he never questioned or lacked enthusiasm for the job at hand, it made him proud, very proud.

Bart remembered once when Aiden even volunteered to crawl through mud and standing water under a house just to fix a broken pipe so his uncle wouldn’t have to do it. Aiden never once shirked or turned down a task that Bart had, either for a client or at his own place. He just couldn’t understand how his own sister could treat this sweet boy the way she had. Aiden always did for her, never got into trouble, always had good grades, never gave her any reason to complain about anything. He cooked, he cleaned. And for this poor kid, to be treated this way, pissed him off even more. Bart growled out loud without even realizing it. Both boys froze in place where they were and had wide eyes at hearing him.

“Something wrong, Uncle Bart?” Seth asked carefully.

“Bunch of shit, total fucking shit.” Bart muttered mostly to himself. The boys knew that their uncle rarely, if ever really cussed and it surprised them. Bart turned around and looked at them both and sighed. He growled again and plunged a hand into his pants pocket, pulling it back out, he had some cash in his big paw. He peeled off a twenty and handed it out toward Seth.

“What’s this?” Seth asked with wide eyes.

“You know that little mini market down on the corner?” Bart asked and Seth nodded, “Go down there and get us all something, would you?” Bart asked and Seth slowly took the bill from the thick fingers, “I’d like to talk to Aiden for a bit, okay?”

“Sure.” Seth said and the boys looked at each other briefly. Seth flashed a brief smile at his brother and walked away. Aiden looked at the big man nervously.

“Let’s take a seat and have a talk.” Bart said gently and went over sitting down on the concrete back steps of the house. Aiden slowly came over and sat down next to his uncle.

“Did we do something wrong, Uncle Bart?” Aiden asked carefully. Bart rested his big arms on his thighs, leaning forward a bit and shook his head.

“No, son, you didn’t. Your mom did.” Bart said, “I want to know if you’re okay being where you are with Ty.”

“Yeah, it’s great, actually.” Aiden said softly and then cleared his throat.

“Are you staying in the house with them?” Bart asked.

“They…uh…gave me the place that we had worked on for them.” Aiden said.

“Oh. How is it?” Bart asked.

“It’s beautiful inside. Uncle T told me that Derrick had picked out everything that’s in there. It’s better than you can imagine. You should see it.”

“Derrick seems like a really nice guy. I liked working for him.” Bart said softly.

“Did you know that they got married?” Aiden asked and Bart snapped his head to look at him.

“What?”

“They got married.” Aiden said, “Last Friday.”

“I’ll be damned. No, I didn’t know. Ty didn’t say anything last night on the phone.” Bart said. Aiden looked down at the sidewalk, “Are you…okay?” Bart asked and Aiden nodded but dropped a tear, “Hey, buddy, listen. I know I’m not your dad but I couldn’t love you any more if you were my own son. I’m so proud of you, Aiden. You’re such a good kid, you always have been.”

“I try to be.” Aiden said softly, “I wish you were my dad.” Another tear dropped from Aiden’s eye and Bart put a big arm around Aiden’s shoulders and pulled him close to him.

“I wish I was too.” Bart said and kissed Aiden’s temple. It made Aiden sniffle because Bart had never done that before and it made Aiden’s heart want to explode with love and warmth for this big man that he loved so much, “You want to tell me what happened?”

“I thought Seth did that already.”

“He told me part of it, but I have a feeling not all of it.” Bart said. Aiden sighed.

“I was cleaning my room. Frank was there. He started teasing me about being a French maid. Mom came to the door and listened to him and she was laughing about it. Then, she said that maybe I should spend as much time trying to find a girlfriend. He started teasing some more and I was just standing there looking at them. She kind of got quiet. I looked at her and this voice inside me just told me to tell her so they would just shut up. So, I told her that I didn’t need a girlfriend or want one. Frank laughed and asked, ’why, are a fag or something?’ I didn’t look at him, just looked at her and, ‘Yeah, I’m gay, so?’ She started yelling that I couldn’t be, no son of hers was going to be that way and then before I knew it, he came charging up to me and punched me so hard that I dropped to the floor with the wind knocked out me.” Aiden said and Bart drew his arm back, jumped up and stood up in front of Aiden.

“He did what?”

“I thought you knew.” Aiden said.

“I thought he just yelled at you or something. I didn’t know he put his hands on you. Did your mother touch you?” Bart asked trying his best to stay calm but it wasn’t working. Aiden shook his head in answer, “What happened after that?”

“Seth came in and got between us, trying to keep Frank off me. It worked for the most part and Mom was screaming and yelling at me, telling me to get out and not come back. Seth kept pushing me toward the door, staying between them. We got outside, he had my keys and everything, you know how I always lose them. We got in the car and I just started driving.” Aiden said and his eyes went kind of blank and hollow. Bart saw it and it broke his heart. Seth came back around the corner of the house and froze. His uncle looked over at him.

“Uh oh.” Seth said softly.

“Why didn’t you tell me what happened?” Bart asked as gently as he could.

“I…uh…uh…” Seth stuttered.

“Never mind. It’s not important now. But what is important is that from now on, and I mean totally from now on, don’t ever, ever think that you can’t tell me anything. Either one of you. Is that clear?” Bart asked with a raised finger.

“Yes, sir.” They both said quietly. Bart knelt down in front of Aiden and put his big hands on Aiden’s knees. They looked at each other for a minute.

“You being safe and taken care of is the most important thing right now. I don’t say it enough, not near enough, but I love you, both of you. And I don’t care if you’re gay or straight or whatever you want to call it. It doesn’t matter to me. I should have been there for you and I wasn’t.” Bart said.

“I understand why you weren’t, Uncle Bart, and that’s okay, really it is.” Aiden said.

“You don’t have to be brave, bud, you’ve been brave enough already. This whole thing is wrong and it really has me pissed off right now.” Bart said. He pat Aiden’s knees and then stood. He looked over at Seth, who looked scared. Bart smiled at him and held out an arm. Seth came closer to him. Bart put his arm around Seth’s shoulders and pulled him in, “And you, little man, you were incredibly brave to get in between that fat slob and your brother to try and protect him. I’m proud of you, too.”

“Uncle T called him ‘dump truck’ a couple of times to his face when he was at the house.” Seth said as he put an arm around his uncle’s big waist. It was the first time they all laughed.

“Yeah, he is kind of like a dump truck, isn’t he?” Bart asked and then chuckled, “I’m not far behind him though.”

“You’re not calling to check on your guy, are you?” Sam Beckett asked into the phone.

“No, you sorry old nail bender, I’m not.” Derrick chuckled into the phone.

“Well, what can I do for you then, cartoonist?” Sam asked.

“I just wanted to call and thank you for all this extra money that you sent me. It was very generous of you. Maybe I should send you some flowers in return.” Derrick said.

“What are you talking about?”

“My lady that does my accounts receivable said that this check you sent was too much. When I looked at it and then the invoice, I realized she was right, it’s almost twice over. Very generous of you, old friend.” Derrick said.

“Well, this is refreshing to hear. Thanks very much for your honesty, I really appreciate it. But do me a favor, will you?” Sam asked.

“Want me to send it back?”

“No, tear the fucking thing up!” Sam almost yelled into the phone. Derrick chuckled again, “I’ll have them cut you a new one and send it over right away.”

“Don’t go to any trouble. We’re not cash strapped as of yet.” Derrick said, “I’ll have my lady give your payables a call and get it worked out. Is everything okay over there?”

“Yeah, or at least I thought it was. I’ve got a temp in right now. I should probably double check everything just to make sure.” Sam said.

“Might be a good idea.” Derrick said.

“But seriously, I really appreciate you calling me personally about this. It means a lot.” Sam said.

“No problem, bud. We should get together and do lunch. You’re buying of course, especially after saving you all this money.” Derrick said.

“Oh, you’re funny, very funny. Fucking cartoonist.” Sam said.

“Well, at least I have a real profession and I’m not some has been nail bender like you.” Derrick chuckled.

“Yeah, yeah. You should have it so good. But seriously, just to let you know, I just got a report about your boy from my retiring foreman. Apparently hiring him has been the greatest decision I’ve ever made.”

“Oh?”

“I guess he’s out there kicking ass, taking names and numbers as he’s doing it. My old foreman says he’s never seen anything like it and I got my ass chewed as well for being a lazy fuck for just sitting around the office as much as I do.” Sam said.

“Oh, well, we all knew that.” Derrick chuckled.

“Yeah, yeah, fuck off and die you little snot. I just want to say thanks for letting me have him.” Sam said.

“Hey, it was his decision, not mine. I just hope to hell you can control him. I couldn’t. He just took over the whole project from me. I just had to get out of the way and watch the sawdust fly.” Derrick said. Sam chuckled into the phone.

“I have no doubt he’s going to give me results, and really good ones too.”

“No doubt.” Derrick said, “But I’m serious about lunch.”

“Yeah, let’s work out something for Friday.” Sam said.

“Sounds good. Give me a call.”

“I will. Talk to later, cartoonist.” Sam said and hung up the phone before Derrick could say anything else. Derrick hung up his phone and looked up.

“Who the hell was that?” Tom asked as he was at Derrick’s office door.

“Sam Beckett. Giving me shit as always.” Derrick said and motioned for his partner to come in, “How you doing?”

“I’m doing okay, thanks. The real question is, how are you doing?” Tom asked as he sat down in a chair across from Derrick.

“Couldn’t be better, really.” Derrick smiled.

“I like the beard thing going on. What’s up with that? Something he wanted?”

“No, something that hit me and I thought I’d give a try. For a little while at least.” Derrick smiled with a shrug.

“Alright. Well, it looks good. I think it might suit you.” Tom said.

“Alright, enough of this pleasantry bullshit, what’s going on?”

“Had a couple of errands I had to take care of this morning. Sorry I wasn’t here. Did I miss anything?” Tom asked.

“You’re being very mysterious.” Derrick said. Tom leaned forward in his chair.

“Our anniversary is coming up.” Tom whispered, “I forgot it last year. I had to sleep on the couch for almost a month.”

“You fucking idiot.” Derrick said and laughed out loud. Tom blushed.

“I don’t want to go through that again.” Tom said rolling his eyes.

“I bet. So what are doing to save yourself this time?” Derrick asked.

“You can’t say a word, not to anyone, especially Diane.” Tom said.

“When would I…?”

“You have to swear to me.” Tom said and his eyes pleaded.

“Okay.” Derrick said and sat back, bracing himself a bit as Tom looked so intense, “I swear. Just between us.”

“Well, I’ve been trying to get and push for…an adoption.” Tom said.

“Are you serious?” Derrick asked as he sat forward at his desk.

“I’ve been working on it for a few months.” Tom said and was on the verge of tears all of a sudden, “She cries herself to sleep sometimes. It just breaks my heart to see her hurt that way.”

“Oh my god.” Derrick said and jumped up from his desk. He went over to the door and closed it quickly and then came back to his friend, dropping to his knees in front of him, “Oh, Tom, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.” Derrick said as his friend and partner broke down, tears streaming down his cheeks, “What have you found out?”

“I had to go down to the agency this morning. There’s been a huge development. Apparently there’s a baby that’s become available, a newborn little girl. They wanted to make sure that we still wanted to take her.” Tom said as he sobbed.

“Oh my god, that’s so wonderful. You get to have a daughter. Congratulations, buddy.” Derrick said and leaned in and hugged his friend tight. Tom continued to sob on Derrick’s shoulder. Derrick held onto him tight and there was knock at the door and then it opened. Terry stepped in and saw what was going on and Derrick gave him a cut look. Terry backed out of the door and closed it softly, “When do you get to bring her home?” Derrick asked.

“That’s the tough part.” Tom said and Derrick pulled away from him, “They have to do a home inspection and make sure of everything first. Diane doesn’t know anything about this. I can’t tell her because…if it doesn’t work out, it would just kill her.”

“There’s nothing wrong with your house, buddy. You know that, I know that.” Derrick said, “You have to tell her. I mean, what were you going to do, just walk in the door with a baby and say…surprise, look what I brought home?”

“I know…it’s stupid.” Tom sobbed and then sniffled. Derrick thought, thought long and hard and then spoke.

“Alright, here’s what you have to do…”

Alec walked into the kitchen, bracing himself for what might be next, especially after his confrontation with Robert in the bedroom. He carried in the tray with the remains of his morning coffee. He opened the small carafe and poured it out. He washed it and the cup and set them to dry on the counter. He could hear soft laughter, the laughter of children and smiled to himself hearing it. Those wonderful kids made him feel so much better. The sounds were coming from outside on the large open terrace. He leaned forward and looked out the window. He saw who was out there and he smiled openly, Madame Julienne, Chevelle, and the kids, no Robert.

And then it struck Alec. It sent a wave up his spine, not panic, not fear, just a feeling of anxiousness. Robert was still in the house with him somewhere. Was he up in their room? Was he hiding around a corner somewhere just waiting? Alec spun and looked around the kitchen. He was alone. His own mind was beginning to freak him out. He didn’t know if Robert was some kind of stalker or something. What if he turned to be something that Alec couldn’t handle, what if? Alec was breathing a little hard. Get a hold of yourself, dude. Alright, think, think…what would Conner do right now? Probably face him and then kick his ass into next week. Get a hold of yourself. Alec rolled his eyes and sighed. Fuck, my phone, it’s upstairs.

Alec walked through the house and went to the stairs, going up them slowly, listening as he walked, his heart pounding in his chest. He reached the top of the stairs and moved across the landing to the double doors. The one was still open. Alec saw his phone on the night stand, crossing the room, he picked it up and opened it, the background was a picture of Conner and it made him smile. He opened the phone and started to type a text to Conner. Alec saw movement in the room and lifted his eyes as Robert came at him.

“Don’t say a word.” Whispered Robert as he plunged his mouth against Alec’s, kissing him hard. Alec tried to push back and then felt the pain on his mouth, his lip was sliced by teeth. He tasted blood. In a flash, Alec pushed back, even though a hand held the back of his head.

“Get the fuck off me.” Alec growled as he pushed but Robert’s body pulled into him, making Alec drop his phone. Alec wiggled and pushed and got Robert off him and was shocked by what was happening, stunned from it all. He could see Robert’s eyes, those beautiful eyes as they closed and Alec felt the grope, the clutch to his crotch and it made him grunt. The grip was tight and it hurt as Robert pulled back a little.

“No one has ever denied me, no one. I will have you.” Robert slammed into Alec’s mouth again. Alec fought and spun out of Robert’s grip and before he even realized it, he smashed a fist into Robert’s face, then did it again. Robert was stunned and backed up a couple of steps, a hand going to his own mouth. The look in his eyes told Alec everything, that crazed look that was in them.

“Get the fuck out here! Get out of this house! Now!” Alec yelled, “You touch me again and I’ll knock your ass out!” Alec quickly raised his balled fists and hopped once on his feet, “I told you ‘no’ more than once, but you don’t seem to get it.”

“No one, no one tells me no.” Robert said and went to move. Alec was ready and pulled back. All those years of fighting with his older brothers, learning how to defend himself from them when they were kids was about to pay off. The sudden crack of glass, the grunt, then Robert smashing into Alec, head butting his own, hard, knocked Alec senseless and he fell back, feeling another sharp pain to his head. Everything went dark.

“What?” Alec asked and then felt the cool touch, “Oh, damn that hurts.” Alec said, his eyes were closed and he pressed them even tighter as he struggled to sit up.

“Easy, just take it easy.” The soft voice said. Alec opened his eyes and looked in front of him, focusing. The face that looked at him smiled and nodded, “There you are. I was beginning to wonder.”

“What happened?” Alec asked as he sat forward a bit.

“Easy. You hit your head pretty hard. The ambulance men will have a look at you in a minute.” Madame Julienne said as she dobbed the cool cloth to Alec’s forehead again.

“I don’t need an ambulance.” Alec said as blinked his eyes hard a couple of times.

“Perhaps not, but Robert does.” She said softly.

“Is he alright?” Alec asked as he tried to get up. A gentle hand held him in place.

“He will be, after some time, I’m sure.”

“Where are the kids?” Alec asked.

“They are fine and with Chevelle right now downstairs.”

“What happened?” Alec asked as he slowly got to his feet, holding his head. It hurt at the back of it and throbbed terribly.

“We were on the terrace and heard you shouting. Chevelle came up quickly to see what was happening in here. She saw Robert attacking you. She told me that the only thing she could do to stop him was to hit him over the head and the only thing there was at hand was a rather expensive crystal vase. She thought she had killed him for a moment apparently.”

“All I remember was I heard the crash, the glass breaking, and his head hit mine pretty hard.” Alec said.

“He must have knocked you down and you hit the night stand with the back of your head.” Madame Julienne said.

“Pardon, Madame.” A man’s voice said with a French accent. She turned and they began to speak in French to one another rather rapidly. He came up to Alec and guided him to sit on the bed. He looked Alec over, speaking French the entire time. Alec said nothing as it was so rapidly coming, he couldn’t make any of it out.

“He wishes to know if you are having blurry vision?” Madame Julienne asked.

“Uh…no. Just hurts a little.” Alec said.

“You are English, no?” The man asked as he was right up close to Alec’s face.

“American.” Alec said as his eyes followed him.

“Bien. I speak very little English.” The man said and smiled slightly, “You hurt?”

“Oui. Here.” Alec said and pointed to the back of his head. The man looked around him and shined a flashlight.

“A slight red, but no cut. A little bump as well.” He said and stood facing Madame Julienne speaking French again. They conversed for a few minutes and then he walked out.

“I will get you another cool cloth and some ice. I will return in a few moments.”

“I’ll be alright.” Alec said and blinked hard again. He noticed there was shards of glass all over the floor. He groaned and then remembered the vase and where it sat. He looked over at the little table and sure enough it was gone, flowers lying on the floor along with a big wet spot surrounding them. Alec slowly stood and looked toward the door. He saw her standing there, eyes red.

“I cannot begin to tell you how deeply sorry I am that this has happened.” Chevelle said in her soft voice. Alec came toward her slowly.

“You have nothing to be sorry for.” Alec said softly, holding the back of his head, “Where are the kids?”

“With Mama in the kitchen.”

“Where are they taking Robert? Is he alright?” Alec asked. Chevelle smiled briefly and shook her head a little.

“I am sure he will be, at least I hope he will be. They are taking him to the hospital in Lyon. They said he might be there for a while. The police want to talk to him as well.”

“I’m sure they’ll want to talk to me as well, great.” Alec said rolling his eyes a little.

“You should rest.” She said softly.

“I’ll be alright.” Alec said. He crunched a piece of glass under his foot, “Have to clean this up. I don’t want the kids to step on it.”

“You’re too nice.” Chevelle said and came to him, taking him by the arm, leading him back to the bed, “You should only worry about you at the moment. Get off your feet. I will clean up the mess in a moment.” Alec sat down on the edge of the bed slowly. He chuckled a little.

“I guess my head is harder than I thought.”

“What do you mean?” Chevelle asked. Alec smiled out of the corner of his mouth and pointed at the top of the night stand which now had a new dent in it at the edge, “Oh my.”

“No, I think I said ouch or something like it.” Alec said. Chevelle chuckled and bent down and kissed Alec on the cheek. She looked him in the eyes.

“You were very brave. I have seen Robert like that before. He loses himself, his mind.”

“What’s wrong with him?” Alec asked as Madame Julienne came in with a tray. She came to the bed and set it down near Alec.

“If I were to place blame, I would blame his career, but then I would also have to place blame on the world as a whole. He has become so self-obsessed that it has completely taken him over. There are people that idolize him, worship him in a way and he has fallen into it, feeding his desires, all of them, and his appetites. I have put up with it for quite a while. It wasn’t until you refused him that he just…switched like a light. He had to possess you no matter what it took. That is why we argued last night. I tried to reason with him, but he…” Chevelle stopped.

“Did he hurt you?” Alec asked. Chevelle nodded slowly with closed eyes, “I’m so sorry. If I’d have known….”

“You would have simply fueled it even more. You did the right thing. You put a stop to it. He will have to have treatment for this.”

“But he hurt you.” Alec said softly. He took a hand of hers in his, “No one deserves that.”

“It has happened before, but now it will not happen again. He will get the help that he needs finally.”

“I hope so.” Alec said, “What happens now. You’re not going home, are you?”

“No, Chevelle and the children will stay with me for a few days until this is settled with Robert.” Madame Julienne said as she gently applied the ice pack to the back of Alec’s head making him groan a little.

“Your house is too small. You said it yourself. Chevelle, please, you and the kids can stay here in the house.” Alec said.

“We will manage, Mister Alec.” Madame Julienne said softly, “Here, place your hand here and hold this.” Alec did as she said, “I will fetch what I need to clean up the glass. I’ll be back in a minute.”

“Chevelle, I feel so terrible about all of this.”

“You shouldn’t. It was him, it was all him.” Chevelle said.

“I feel bad for the kids. Are they okay?” Alec asked barely above a whisper.

“They will be. I explained to them that their father is ill and will be away for a while. I thank you for your caring and compassion.” Chevelle said. She smiled and leaned forward and kissed his cheek again.

“So, is there something else you need to tell me about?” Ty asked as he and Mike had checked on the last project for Beckett for the day. They stood out on the sidewalk in front of this house that had an addition being built. Ty had been impressed, especially by the lead carpenter on the job, an older man by the name of Mort. He was a friendly guy and Ty liked him very much, they even joked a bit with each other.

“What do you think?” Mike asked in reply.

“Well, I don’t know, bud.” Ty said and thought about this first day and everything that he saw and how these crews varied and how they worked together, or didn’t, “Is it always like this?”

“What do mean?” Mike asked.

“Well, at first glance, there doesn’t seem to be any flow with these guys. It’s almost like they…have their own little clicks with each other, you know what I mean?” Ty asked.

“Wow, you hit that one on the head. How long have you been working alone?” Mike asked.

“Ten years.” Ty said and Mike raised an eyebrow at him, “Why?”

“Well, don’t get pissed off, but you seem to have your own little click with yourself.” Mike said. Ty frowned, “That’s not a bad thing. I think it’s actually kind of good, it might shake things up a bit. All these guys have gotten so used to each other and how they work. You pointed out all kinds of things that to be honest, I’ve been overlooking myself. I told Sam earlier on the phone that I thought that he made the best decision in hiring you and I have no doubt that you are going to do one hell of a job for him. If I were you, I’d ask for more money.” Mike said and grinned.

“He’s already paying more money than I ever made for myself.” Ty said and then looked at Mike seriously, “Don’t think I’m trying to blow smoke up your ass, but there’s something to me than means more than money.”

“What’s that?”

“Reputation.” Ty said flatly, “It took me a long time to build mine up. I’m not saying that Sam has a bad one, I’ve never heard anything bad about him at all, some of his guys, yeah, but not Sam. That means a lot to me and one of the reasons why I took this job. And if I can make his reputation better, then I’m going to.”

“You’re a hell of a guy. Why the fuck didn’t he hire you ten years ago?” Mike asked.

“Well, if he did, then you would have been out of a job.” Ty said and then laughed. Mike laughed as well.

“You really kill me, bud.” Mike said, “Alright, let’s head back to the office. You can drop me off and then we get to do this again tomorrow.”

“Sounds like fun.” Ty smiled and slapped Mike on the shoulder as they turned to the truck. They climbed in and Ty started the truck. They pulled away from the curb, “You know when I was in Chicago, I worked high rise steel, tons of guys, and all union. Talk about a bunch of shit, oh my god. They had their little clicks too. One of the foremen decided to stir the pot. He switched a lot of the guys around, broke up the clicks. It almost ruined production on the building we were doing at the time.”

“What are you thinking?” Mike asked.

“I’m thinking that is not the way to go. If these guys are used to each other, I just have to figure how to help them to be better at what they do. The downtown project for instance, that would be the place to start. Those three guys trust each other. I could see it. But I also saw the weak link in the chain and that was that Mario guy.” Ty said.

“He’s always been quiet.”

“Quiet is fine. I don’t have a problem with that. No, what I saw was a guy who is actually the anchor of that little group but doesn’t know it. If he wasn’t there, those guys would fuckin fall apart. I bet he can out work the other two without even thinking about it.” Ty said.

“You sure you’ve been working alone for ten years?” Mike asked. Ty smiled as he turned a corner.

“I’ve got an idea for tomorrow that I want to try.” Ty said.

“Do I want to know?” Mike asked.

“You might want to bring your own truck.” Ty chuckled and Mike laughed out loud.

“This is gonna be good.” Mike said. Ty’s phone started ringing.

“Shit.” Ty said and pulled it out, “Here, answer this and put it on speaker for me.” Mike moved quickly and did it for him, “Hello?” Ty said loudly.

“Uncle T?!”

“Seth? What’s wrong, buddy?” Ty asked as he slowed the truck.

“It’s Uncle Bart, you got to get here, get here quick. He’s gonna kill him.”

“Whoa, buddy. What are you talking about? Who’s Bart gonna kill?”

“Frank. Uncle Bart found out about him hitting Aiden. He’s gonna kill him. We’re at the house.”

“Seth, I’m on my way right now, I’m close. Hang up with me and call 911 right now. Right now, Seth!”

“Alright!” The phone went dead.

“What the fuck is that all about?” Mike asked as Ty pulled the truck back out on the road.

“Uh…just hang on.” Ty said, “Sorry, family emergency.”

“Hey, easy there, bud. It’s a brand new truck remember, a company truck?”

“Yeah. Hope this thing’s got a little power.” Ty said as he floored the pedal and made a light before the red, “I guess it does.”

“Hey, slow down a second. What’s going on?” Mike asked.

“Long story short, there’s a drunken fat fuck that beat on a kid, one of my nephews.”

“What the fuck you waitin for? Punch it.” Mike said and hung on. Ty grinned for a second and floored it again. Two rights and a left, squealing tires all the way. He came screaming down the street to Jolene’s. Ty threw it in park as he slid up on the curb grass and shut off the truck. He snatched the key and jumped out in one motion as he saw Bart and the Dump Truck shoving each other back and forth across the brown grass. Ty ran up with Mike coming up behind him, but staying back a little. Sirens could be heard in the distance.

“Bart! Bart! Stop!” Jolene was screaming and trying to get in the middle of them. Ty rushed up and pushed her out of the way, getting between Bart and Frank.

“Easy, big guy, easy…easy.” Ty said, putting his hands on Bart’s shoulders.

“You want a fuckin piece of me? Bring it! Come on!” Frank was yelling and spitting on the back of Ty’s neck swinging and slapping at Bart over Ty’s shoulders.

“You son of a bitch! You had no business touching him! I’m gonna kick your ass!” Bart yelled.

“Come on! Come on! Try it, just try it!” Frank yelled. Ty got hit more than once and was losing his temper quickly. He tried desperately to get Bart pushed back. Jolene jumped back in and was pulling on her brother. Mike stepped in and got Jolene out of it, holding out a hand to keep her from moving any more. She was screaming and swinging but not trying to hit Mike.

“Stop! Stop, all of you!” Seth yelled as he came off the porch and got in the middle of it as the cops pulled up. Frank snarled, grabbed Seth by the shirt and backhanded him hard, knocking him to the ground. Ty saw it and spun as the two officers charged up, sticks and mace in hand. Ty snarled and grabbed Frank hard.

“I told you I’d rip you apart if you touched him!” Ty screamed and pulled back a fist. The smack was almost deafening and the fat man fell like a tree to the ground, fat arms and legs bounced once on the brown grass as Ty was grabbed by a police officer, “Serves you right, you fuck.”

“Everybody needs to calm down.” One of the officers said. Ty was watching the fallen slob on the ground as he was being hand-cuffed.

“Look at the boy!” Ty shouted, “Look after the boy!” Ty yelled. The officer stopped and got in Ty’s face.

“Calm…down.” He said carefully.

“Fine!” Ty said as he glared at the officer, “Pick up the kid, public servant.”

“You’re going to jail, asshole.” The cop said. He turned away and bent down to help Seth up, who shrugged off his grip.

“Get your hands off me.” Seth said, “You’re arresting the wrong guy. That’s the son of a bitch that hit me and my brother.” Seth was pointing at the unconscious body on the lawn.

“Take it easy, son.” The cop said, putting a hand on Seth’s chest.

“He’s not your son.” Ty snarled at the cop.

“Is he yours?” The cop asked.

“Ty Caldwell?” The voice asked. Ty was glaring at the cop in front of him, struggling in the hand-cuffs. Ty saw someone out of the corner of his eye and slowly turned and looked. Recognition was slow at first, then it finally sank in. Ty looked him up and down seeing the uniform then the nametag, D. Campbell.

“Thought you were a detective?” Ty asked. The smooth smile crossed over the lips of the handsome officer.

“We have to pull street duty every once in a while. This seems to be your lucky day, or maybe not.”

“You know this guy?” The first officer asked.

“I do.” Campbell said and got behind Ty and got close to his ear, “I’m going to take these off. Promise me you’re going to behave yourself.”

“Fine.” Ty said flatly.

“Promise?” Campbell asked.

“Yeah, yeah, I promise.” Ty said. He felt the hand-cuffs release. He pulled his arms in front of him rubbing his wrists. He looked at Seth, “Hey, you okay?”

“Are you?” Seth asked. Ty nodded and smiled. He threw his arms around Seth and held him really tight, “Uncle T, can’t breathe.” Ty chuckled and let Seth go. Ty spun and looked at Bart.

“You alright?”

“You shouldn’t have hit him.” Bart said and leaned into Ty’s face, “I wanted to.” Bart growled.

“You’ll get your chance, big guy. But, if one of us is going to jail, I’d rather it be me than you.” Ty smiled briefly and pat Bart’s shoulder. There was a groan and then a cough behind Ty.

“Oh fuck, my nose is broken.” The slob said as he sat up, “Fuck, I’m bleeding.”

“That may be just the start.” Ty muttered. He looked at Seth, “Go sit down on the steps.”

“But…”

“Go sit down, buddy.” Ty said softly. He looked at Bart, “Go with him.”

“But…”

“Go with him.” Ty said a bit more forcefully. Bart rolled his head looking like a chastised little kid and went to follow Seth.

“That’s my son, this is my property!” Jolene said and Mike got in her face.

“You need to shut up.” Mike said forcefully with a raised finger. Jolene went wide eyed.

“Thank you.” Campbell said to Mike, “Now, if I can have you step back a little please.” He smiled. Mike nodded at him, “Thank you.” He looked at Jolene, “Start from the top, ma’am, how did this get started?”

“You, over to the car.” The first officer said to Ty, “I said over to the car.”

“Fine.” Ty said. He walked over to the patrol car at the curb.

“Sit on the grass.” The officer said.

“Yeah, don’t think so, it’ll stain my pants.”

“Sit on the grass or I’ll knock you on your ass.” The officer said, stick in hand.

“You know, public servant, you need an attitude check.” Ty said, folding his huge arms and puffing his chest.

“I wouldn’t mess with him, he’s been lifting steel I beams all day long by himself.” Mike said as he came close to the officer.

“Fine. Who are you?”

“Ty Caldwell.”

“What are you doing here?”

“Answering a call for help.”

“Who called you?”

“That young man over there that you were so slow to help out. Remember, he’s the one that got backhanded by the other guy?”

“Are you related?”

“You could say that. I’m his uncle.”

“Who’s the guy you knocked out?”

“His mother’s worthless boyfriend.”

“You’re making this difficult, buster.”

“Wow, I haven’t been called ‘buster’ since I was a kid at the doctor’s office. I’m not the one that’s smacking kids around, that would be that fat fuck over there on the ground. I was the one that was trying to defend the kid, REMEMBER?” Ty said with bugged eyes, “My blind grandmother could see this shit, why can’t you?”

“You and I are going to have a serious problem.”

“Ditch the badge and the uniform and then I’ll meet you anywhere.” Ty snarled, “But until then get out of my face or I’m gonna make a phone call and have your Sergeant or Lieutenant here in no time and then watch you squirm. How about that…buster?”

“I want that son of a bitch arrested! He broke my nose! I want him for assault!” The bleeding slob said as he struggled to his feet.

“You need to go into the house, ma’am.” Detective Campbell said. He walked away from Jolene toward the shouting. The other officer turned and looked in that direction as well. Campbell came over, holding out his hands.

“You need to calm down, sir.” Campbell said.

“Do something about that crazy son of a bitch! I want him arrested!”

“I said calm down.” Campbell said. Hands went to Campbell’s chest and pushed, “Big mistake.” Campbell said. He raised his stick and thumped Frank in the middle of his forehead, making it sound like a baseball being hit. He grunted and went to swing as the other officer jumped and came over quickly. Campbell shook his head and thumped Frank again in the same spot, making the same sound. He fell again to the ground. Jolene screamed and rushed across the yard.

“That’s police brutality! We’ll sue you!”

“You need to calm down, ma’am.” The first officer said and stepped in front of her as Campbell rolled the body over and hand-cuffed him. She screamed again watching the cuffs going on.

“You just hit him! He didn’t do anything!”

“You need to calm down, ma’am.” The first officer said, a hand went to his mic on his shoulder, “424, need assistance.”

“Copy 424.” The voice said back in the mic. Jolene screamed again. Seth laughed out loud from the steps.

“I got it all on video if you guys want it!” Seth said and Ty chuckled from the patrol car. Mike moved close to Ty.

“This happen often with your family?” Mike asked. Ty shook his head.

“I hate drama.” Ty said. More sirens could be heard coming in the distance. Jolene turned on Seth.

“Give me that phone.”

“It’s mine, I pay for it.”

“Give me that phone I said!”

“Why? So you can try and delete the video?” Seth asked and Jolene reached out for a grab. Seth moved away as Bart rose up off the steps to block her, “Are you telling me that he’s more important than your own son?” Seth asked his mother.

“You’re no son of mine.” Jolene snarled. Tears formed in Seth’s eyes.

“Jolene!” Bart yelled at her, “He’s your son for god sake.”

“Not anymore. You can join your worthless brother as far as I’m concerned.” She spun and went toward the officers and Frank as they were hoisting him up, pleading with the officers to let him go. The new squad cars arrived blocking the street, officers jumping out to come assist their comrades. Ty went across the lawn and came toward Seth and Bart. He stopped short looking at Seth, who was dropping tears.

“Oh, buddy, I’m so sorry.” Ty said.

“It’s alright. Now I know how she really feels.”

“Let’s go pack your stuff. You aren’t spending another night in this house.” Bart said as he put his arm around Seth’s shoulders.

Ty walked in the front door of the house, closing it slowly as he saw Derrick and Aiden sitting on the couch. Ty raised an eyebrow and gave them a flash of a smile. Derrick sipped from his wine and flashed his eyes at Ty.

“Dinner is just about ready.” Derrick said, “How was your day, dear?”

“Illuminating.”

“Oooh, one of my words.” Derrick said with a smile.

“I don’t suppose I could get one of those, could I?” Ty asked. Derrick raised his eyebrows at him.

“A glass of wine? Wow, really must have been quite a day.” Derrick said as he got up off the couch, “Just let me get that for you. I’ll be right back.” Derrick walked toward the kitchen and Ty looked at Aiden.

“Talk to your brother?” Ty asked. Aiden nodded, “He tell you everything?” Again, Aiden nodded, “You alright?” Aiden nodded.

“What happened to her?” Aiden asked.

“The last I saw, she was starting to drink herself into a stupor with whiskey.” Ty said. Derrick walked to him and handed out a glass.

“Here you are, babe.” Derrick said. Ty took it and held it up.

“To new experiences.”

“Cheers.” Derrick said as he touched Ty’s glass, “So, I had chance to speak with Sam today.”

“How’d that go?” Ty asked. He took another sip.

“Fine, really fine. They sent a check to us and it was wrong, way too much. So I called to let him know. And in passing, he told me what this guy you’re replacing said to him on the phone.”

“Yeah, Mike. He told me he called Sam and what he said.”

“So, did you like the job or is it something that isn’t really for you?” Derrick asked.

“It’s too early to tell yet. I’ll know better in another week maybe.” Ty said. He looked at Aiden, “Did you tell him?”

“Oh yes, he told me all about it.” Derrick said and went over to the couch. He sat on the arm, “How’s Seth?”

“Broken.” Ty said flatly.

“I can imagine you’re upset, I understand it. Do you want some ice for your knuckles?” Derrick asked and Ty lifted is hand and looked at it. Swollen a little and cut.

“Nah, it’ll be alright. Believe me, they’ve been worse.” Ty said. He looked at Aiden again, “Don’t freak out, but there will be a police officer coming by in a little while. He’ll want to ask you some questions about what happened at the house. Can you do that?”

“Do I have a choice?” Aiden asked softly.

“You do.” Ty said, “You can politely decline if you want. There’s enough on Frank already for him to do some time probably in the county jail, but if you add to it, that makes three assaults. Three’s a bad number for this kind of thing.”

“Is Seth really okay?” Aiden asked.

“You know, I don’t think any of us are okay right now. It was a crappy situation that went worse real quick and the bad thing about is, I helped make it that way.” Ty said.

“Ty…”

“No, Derrick, it’s true. I told myself years ago when I used to bar hop and bar fight all the time that if I ever got away from it, I’d never do it again. And guess what, I got into a fight, driving a company truck, with a co-worker, on my first day of my new job.” Ty said and then he laughed, “It sure was a sight. But, as far your brother is concerned, he was working towards a black eye when we finally got to your Uncle Bart’s and got him settled in. He got most of what happened on video. I watched it, and I have to say, it sure made me feel good to watch that dump truck get his skull cracked twice.”

“Wish I could have seen it.” Aiden said and firmed up looking at Ty, “He had it coming. You know he did.”

“Does it make you angry?” Ty asked as he sipped more wine. Aiden nodded as he stared at Ty, “Good, then it will be easier to talk to the officer, won’t it? He’s a nice guy by the way. We both know him.”

“Oh dear lord, who is it?” Derrick asked. Ty looked at him and smiled and flashed his eyes.

“Do you remember Officer Campbell, then Detective Campbell, now back to officer.” Ty said and Derrick remembered him with a smile.

“The one with the really tight ass that was here that first night?”

“That would be the one. He was there this afternoon, in all his glory.” Ty said flashing his eyes.

“Oh, Jesus.” Derrick said and drained his glass. He got up, “You want another one?”

“Maybe with dinner.” Ty said. He looked at Aiden who had a stunned look on his face, “What’s wrong?”

“You were talking about a cop’s butt.”

“Yeah, sure, why not? It’s really fuckin hot, and so is the rest of him.” Ty said.

“But he’s…”

“A man.” Ty said, “We’re gay, remember? We check out guys, that’s what we do. You check out other guys, don’t you?” Ty asked and Aiden nodded slowly, “Well, there you go. He just so happens to wear a uniform, and believe it or not, he’s gay as well.”

“Seriously?” Aiden asked.

“Yeah. So, speaking of hot, have you heard from your hottie?” Ty asked. He emptied his glass and set it on the coffee table.

“A couple of times today.”

“Hmmm, that’s a positive sign. Glad to hear it.” Ty said and then he remembered something as Derrick walked back into the living room, “Here, let me show you something.” Ty pulled out his phone and opened it. He looked for it and there it was. He showed Derrick who gasped, “I know, right?”

“I can’t believe you did that.”

“Did what? What did you do?” Aiden asked. Ty turned the phone around and showed Aiden, who went bug eyed and his mouth fell open.

“Want me to send it to you?” Ty asked.

“That’s us.” Aiden whispered.

“Better than porn.” Ty said and turned the phone around, “You guys are beautiful together. You should send it to Greg too.”

“Uh…I couldn’t.”

“Why not?” Ty asked.

“One, it’s embarrassing. Two, his mom goes through his phone sometimes.” Aiden said. Ty came over and sat on the arm of the couch next to Aiden.

“Well, that kind of cuts down on a few things. Poor guy, I feel bad for him. But you should show him anyway when you see him again. You like the guy, right?” Ty asked and Aiden nodded, “You guys are young and from what I can see, and well, could see this morning, you both have beautiful bodies, and there’s nothing to be ashamed of at all.”

“But we were…naked.” Aiden said.

“Uh, last time I checked, it’s the best way to have sex.” Ty said and then looked at Derrick, “I mean, am I right?”

“Oh, you’ll get no argument from me on that one.” Derrick said and sipped his wine. Derrick looked over his shoulder and saw headlights in the driveway, “I think maybe your officer is here.”
