“You wanted to see me Mr. Thompson.”

“Yes, but you can drop the Mr. Thompson stuff, it’s either Colin or Boss.”

“Ok Boss, thanks.”

“How long have you been on board Dan?”

“Three weeks, nearly a month.”

“Good, good. And so far, it’s been a standard introduction to the business?”

“I think so, Frank is following the schedule I got when I first started.”

“So, you’ve only worked down in the Operations Dept?”

“Yes, I did go out on a scouting trip when I first started. But James said that was just to plan an acquisition event. I didn’t really know what we were doing. It felt like we just sat around and took details of who came to the University car park.”

“Ok, I know which target that is. Very good.”

“Do you know what we do here in this business?”

“Ok well it would be worth looking it up on the internet. That’s the base of the project.”

“A few other things. Don’t talk to anyone else in the business about this. Frank will know details but he won’t discuss it with you. This project is between you and me. If you do well, then we can talk about moving up the ladder, as you mentioned. OK?”

“Yeah, great, really great.”

“Now, take this.”

“I’m sure you are. That’s why I’m only offering this project to one of three staff in the business?”

“Hello Colin, sorry to interrupt, the solicitors are on line two for your scheduled conference call.”

“Thanks Janice. We’re done here. When Dan comes out, can you book an hour with him on Friday?”

“You’re jammed on Friday. You could do 2pm on Thursday.”

“I can do that.”

“Ok, thanks Janice. Dan’s keen, he’ll be out shortly. Can you put the call through, I’ll take it now.”

“Thanks Dan, I’ll see you Thursday, remember, don’t do anything.”

“Excuse me Colin I have a call for you on line 6.”

“Thanks Janice, who is it?”

“A woman by the name of Sarah Colman. She’s not on your contact list, I can say you’re not available and take a message.”

“I don’t know who that is either but put her through, she may be from the solicitors.”

“Hello, this is Colin Thompson.”

“Hello Mr. Thompson, this is Sarah Colman, Dan’s partner.”

“I’m sorry, which agency are you from?”

“I’m not from an agency, I’m Dan Colman’s wife. Dan Colman, who works in your Operations Department.”

“Oh, good heavens, of course you are. I apologise, I’m just not with it today.”

“That’s fine, I’m sure you weren’t expecting my call.”

“No, no I wasn’t, how can I help you?”

“I wanted to speak with you about this contract you’ve given Dan. The one for the 'Mystery Shopper' project you spoke with him about yesterday.”

“Yes, yes, he’s coming in tomorrow to see me.”

“What did you want to know?”

“Well, I note that the contract is vague in places. I’m not sure if its intentional but if I read through the fog, it looks like Dan would be locked in to its performance clauses for a minimum of six months. Is this correct?”

“I’m not sure we’re trying to hide anything, but yes it’s a minimum six months.”

“Let me cut to the chase if I may Colin, it will save us both time.”

“Er, as you wish.”

“Good. First things first, this cock cage he brought home. If he clicks that lock shut, you’ve got the only key? And, he won’t be able to remove it?”

“That’s correct, it’s escape proof. He’ll have it on for a minimum of six months.”

“Between you and me Colin, no. I think it will be an opportunity for us to explore some relationship re-sets of our own.”

“He’s very keen to get the raise. He wanted to sign last night and bring the contract to you today.”

“I see, so you said you’d call?”

“No, this call is between you and me, I’d appreciate it if it could stay that way.”

“Done. In return if you could encourage Dan to wear his new metal to our meeting tomorrow. I think that would be to everyone’s benefit.”

“I wasn’t aware that Dan’s welfare was a consideration we were talking about.”
