“So what in sams hell do you think you’re doing here huh Duke.”

It was no question; this was almost like a father talking to a son before the son got his ass handed to him.  Duke was visibly worried and moved his injured arm behind his back.  He wouldn’t look the man in the eye which was strange cause Duke was known for his steely reserve.  This was making me uncomfortable so I moved in between the two of them and Duke took a step closer to me; I could feel his warmth.

“Sir this wasn’t his fault, it was my idea to come here and I’ll take full responsibility.”

The cop didn’t look at me; he just looked at Duke and stood perfectly still.  The place had returned to its normal level from before the little bar brawl incident so no one took notice of the cop or us stuck in his wake.  Well, I thought no one noticed until the head waitress headed over.

               “Wayne.”

               “Wayne.”

               “Wayne!”

-smack-  My jaw hit the floor once she slapped the cop upside his head.

“What the hell’s wrong with you hitting an officer in…”

“Don’t you DARE use that tone with me Wayne!  Let’s not forget you were sneaking in here when you were the same age as them, and I don’t much care about your badge or what issue you got with these boys, they saved Holly from some gruesome looking truckers and so you WILL leave them alone while you are in my establishment.  Ya hear! “

The cop looked like he was going to speak when he was cut off again.

“Boy… I will ban you and the whole force from drinking here.”

Nothing was said for several minutes while she glared at the cop now known as Wayne while he rubbed his head.

“I don’t have any trouble with them Sally, this is the Thompson boy.  And I’ve known him since he was a child.  We’re here to arrest the guys giving Holly a hard time.  You know we can’t leave our favorite business owner when she’s in distress.”

Dean looked down when Wayne said he was the Thompson kid and Sally gave him a shocked and then sympathetic look as she nodded.

“Hi Officer my name is Nick and I’m a friend of Dean’s”

“I didn’t know Dean had any friends.”  He said dryly ignoring my hand.

“Well he does now, and I’m one of them.  Honestly, sir, this was my idea.  I don’t wanna cause Dean any trouble, and the only reason we were fighting was in defense of Holly.”

“Dean I need to speak with you.  –pause- Why don’t you come outside too, since I get the feeling you’d follow us anyway.”

The four of us including Sally went outside and the warm breeze was so refreshing after being inside.  Dean reached in his pocket for a cigarette and light it up, lighting me one too, I chuckled as he knew I was going to ask.

We stood not saying a word.  Just looking around as Wayne pulled at a Marlboro Menthol and began to smoke as well.  Sally excused herself and soon returned with four drinks smoking some kind of thin cigarette I’d never seen before.

               “They are not old…”

“Shut up Wayne now, we can take these shots and you can write me a ticket or we can take these shots and you cannot write me a ticket, but I have a feeling these two are gonna need these shots.  Cheers everyone.”

Wayne relented to this woman, who I was growing more and more respect for by the minute.  Especially knowing she was the owner of this place and still worked her ass off waiting tables.  We cheered and took our shots.  Fire Ball!  I loved these; the smooth burn was so calming.  We went back to smoking and Sally took her leave telling us boys to not be strangers and for Wayne to not forget where he came from.  We just stood letting her words hang in the air.  Wayne’s cigarette went out and he lit another one, with Dean shortly following suit.  I was a slow and infrequent smoker so I still had half of mine left.  Finally, someone spoke.

               “Did ya fix his arm?”

I was startled but answered that I did.

“You did a good job, looks like a sports bandage instead of an injury.  Let me see your arm Dean.”

               “Wayne please.”

               “Dean.”

Dean took his arm and held it out for Wayne.  I expected the encounter to be rough, but instead it was soft.  And the hard look on Wayne’s face turned to one of worry as he slowly unwrapped the bandage.  Dean was starting to tremble and I wanted so bad to hold his hand.  Instead I just moved next to him, letting our shoulders touch.  –sigh- He relaxed and leaned gently against me as Wayne unwrapped the rest of his forearm.

               “That cunt.”

It wasn’t loud, the way he spoke it, but somehow it was still defining.  Wayne was pissed in a way I’d never seen anyone before.

“You’re gonna come live with me Dean, ok.  I’m not gonna let her hurt you anymore.”

“Wayne, I can’t leave her.  What would she do?  She’d end up dead in a matter of weeks.  Don’t make me choose between you and her Wayne, please.”

Dean was starting to shake; this was an old conversation with still fresh wounds.  Wayne yelled at him for not calling him when this happened.  Dean explained the situation and said that he didn’t call because he was with me and that he was ok.  Wayne finally looked at me, really looked at me.

“Is he gonna be with you tonight?”

“Yes sir.  We’re staying at my house; it’s where we are headed now.”

               -Grunt- “Alright.”

               “Everything alright out here boys?”

Sally had returned smoking another of her thin cigarettes and holding a brown bag.  This time Wayne welcomed her in with a sideways hug and she patted his back.  She had a motherly look to her when she looked at Wayne, and Wayne looked at Dean almost the same way.  I wish someone would look at me like that.

I shook off the self-pity as Sally began to speak.

“Now boys I don’t know what’s going on, but I do know that Wayne here isn’t gonna arrest you and don’t you worry he won’t ticket me either.  I want yall to take this bag it has some skins, burgers, fried pickles, and drinks in it; to which Wayne made a sound.  Don’t you two dare be strangers, ya hear.  Your good boys, don’t forget that.”

Sally handed me the bag and gave me a warm hug that I gladly gave back, it was so nice.  She turned and gave Dean the same hug.  Turning to Wayne she patted him on the cheek and told him to head on inside soon for a shot and a story.  He just laughed and he watched her move back inside.

“Sally is a good woman, been real good to me over the years.  Dean… Nick.  Yall go to your house stay inside and stay out of trouble.  Dean let me talk to you for a second”

As Dean and Wayne moved a little ways away from me towards the stairs Wayne put his hand on Dean’s shoulders and began speaking as Dean only nodded.  His head dropped down and I could tell he was trying not to cry.  Wayne turned his eyes and caught me looking, but I didn’t look away and held his gaze.  A small grin played across his face and he went back to talking to Dean.  He’d nod his head over in my direction and Dean would nod and then they started laughing and gave each other a warm hug.  With that Wayne headed up the stairs and Dean headed back towards me, glancing around as he approached.  When he reached me I didn’t even have time to blink as his lips touched mine, soft and hot.  Sliding right into a hug he laid his forehead on my shoulder as I placed one arm around his waist and another on his back gripping his shoulder.

“I’ll tell you.  But can we head back to your place first?  If you still want me there…”

“Shut up.  Let’s go” Kissing him gently.

Wayne

I make my way around the back of the bar and head into Sally’s office.  I see her there smoking a cigarette and looking at some pictures on her desk.  I take a heavy seat in the arm chair across from her desk and reach for the bourbon that’s waiting for me.

“Well that could have gone better on my part”

“Yes sweaty it could have, but when it comes to that Boy you have no sense of tact.  Hell when it comes to me, Josh or Holly either.  Mr. Protection.”

-Chuckle- “Yeah, I just can’t believe that Judge Harris let her keep him, knowing how badly she treats him.  And now that he’s almost 18 there not gonna do anything and he won’t leave.”

“Hmmm.  Did you know the other boy?”

“I knew Dean was wearing some of his clothes and I knew the shirt he had on looked expensive, but no.  And yet I get the feeling you do.”

“Do you member Sammie, who went to school with you, Carrie, and Josh?”

               “Yeah, why?”

“Well, my boy that was her son.  The one she had with that asshole law school student when she was 19.”

“The one that ran her off.  Hasn’t anyone seen or heard from her in over ten years?  That’s her boy… I expected something different from him.  Expected something…”

“He has his mother’s spirit when she was young.  Loyal, strong, passionate, protective.  I’ve kept tabs on him, he’s a good kid.  But I worry about what that father of his is doing to him every chance he gets.  Especially since he favors his mother so.  Especially in the eyes.”

“That explains why you were so nice to him.  A little mother hen.”

“Shut it now boy.  Hahaha.  Maybe I am.  The children in this town come from fucked up generation after fucked up generation, and they need a little support.”

We sat there quietly as I thought.  Sammie had been a good friend to me too and I didn’t even register that her son was around.  No, I can’t say that, every time I saw his father I would think of what kind of scum her son was becoming without her around.  Guess I was wrong… maybe really wrong.  Especially since Dean cares for him.

“Alright Sally, I’m headed out.  I’ll be in touch.”

               “You better.”

Fuck Carrie… why’d you have to go down this road… your son needs you and you can’t even be strong enough to not hurt him… Sammie… you’re no better.  And the rest of us stay in this shit hole town…

Nick

It felt so good to be back home.  Things might not be perfect, but for the moment we were safe and could finally let our guards down.  We stripped down to my boxer briefs, him in the plain ones and me in the “exotic” looking one’s as he put it in the car.  The two of us, Aisis, and the brown bag of food sat on my bed as the opening previews rolled on for The Hunger Games.  Dean leaned back against the wall and got comfortable as I got one of the boxes of spuds out to split.  Aisis was very content with the piece of thick bacon I had given her from my burger and moved back onto the floor to savor the deliciousness.  We ate the spuds and watched the movie, oowing and awwwing, laughing and gasping in surprise.  Dean was really into the movie I swear a few times I even saw him throw a fake punch.

When the movie ended and the spuds and a beer each being downed/devoured we relaxed back onto the bed.  He was laying with his head on my chest, left leg draped over my right, his right arm bent with the hand under part of his head and his left arm draped over me.  I was stroking his back with my left hand and had my right hand intertwined with his left.

“Wayne really wants me to move in with him.”

This hung in the air for a little bit.  “I kinda wish you would.”

               More silence.  “Why?”

“Because I worry about you at your mom’s.  The guys she brings in, the guns, the drugs.  I worry about you.  I know being there is the reason you can’t sleep at night, you never know what’s gonna happen.”

“I sleep just fine when I’m with you.”

I wrapped my arms around him and he drew himself against me more.

“I have nightmares a lot.  About different things, but they all involve things she brings into the house.  I hate my life Nick I really do.  I don’t wanna go on most days.  I’m always so angry and I don’t understand what I did to deserve this.  But I can’t leave.  If I leave she’s dead.”

He takes several deep breaths before continuing.

“You know how many guys I’ve pulled off of her, how many times people have tried to rob us, how many times I’ve found her passed out or too strung out to even know who I was?  If I leave she dies. I can’t have that on me. I wouldn’t survive with that on my chest.”

I couldn’t say anything to that… I just held him and he drifted off to sleep.  I thought about everything he just said and I knew I couldn’t ask him to leave her, and yet I couldn’t let him stay.  I laid there and let him sleep as thoughts and visions played on my mind.  Before too long the sounds of his sleeping lulled me to sleep and the last thing I remember was the feeling of his heartbeat against me.

Before too long I woke up needing to pop my sore back and stretch out. I still wasn’t used to having someone as heavy as Dean sleeping on me. Shifting my weight caused him to shift in his sleep and his slow and easy breath was now blowing against my neck, and God did it ever feel good. It felt really good. It tickled from the base of my neck to ear and I gasp as blood quickly surged to my cock. I tried to shift Dean but I only made it worse. Curling my toes I try to will away the effects of his breath on my neck, but it’s too late. I’m throbbing hard and flushed in the chest.

Shifting his weight slightly I gasp as I feel his hard cock pressed against my thigh. The thought that he’s hard in my boxer briefs makes my cock throb and I can see the wet spot forming. I close my eyes and try to breathe deeply but a kiss on my neck wrenches a moan from my throat. Eyes flying open I’m not staring straight into Dean’s eyes as he moves his firm broad body over mine.

I swallow deeply. Somehow I didn’t think seeing him over me like this would be so amazing. Watching his arms flex just slightly as they hold him up and feeling his strong thick thighs spread my own lean muscular legs. Leaning down he places his forehead on mine and looks me in the eye. I run my hands up and down his arms slowly until he moves and intertwines our fingers.

“Do you want me to stop?”
