It was a typical day for me. I got up and got ready to go to school. I went downstairs for breakfast telling my parents good morning. Mom set a plate in front of me filled with eggs and bacon and waffles already buttered. I grabbed the syrup and poured some on my waffles. Mom sat across from me and asked, "So what are your plans for this weekend?"

"I don't have any plans, cuz nobody asked me to join them for any parties or what have you." I replied.

"Oh, ok well will you let us know if that changes?" She asked and I nodded that I would let them know. My mom looked at the clock and said, "Oh you better eat quickly so you won't be late for school." I got up and drained my o.j. and gave a peck on my mom's cheek as I grabbed my coat and backpack. I got to Mona's and knocked on the door, and she answered and I told her we had better leave or else be late to school.

We got to school just as the warning bell rang and I bolted inside so I wouldn't be late to class. I got to my locker and threw my bag in and grabbed my books and felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and saw Wes standing there looking sexy as always with his crew cut haircut and chocolate brown eyes and full lips that were perfect for kissing. He wore a navy blue t-shirt that hugged his torso showing off his pecs and broad shoulders with Calvin Klein blue jeans that hung low on his hips but still showed off his ass and had a nice bulge in front.

"Hey, Andy. I was wondering when you wanted to have lunch together?" He asked. I just stood there dumb-struck because I didn't think he was actually serious about having lunch together. "Hello, earth to Andy...." I heard him say while waving a hand in front of my face. I shook out of my trance and said, "Huh?" "I asked when you wanted to have lunch?" he said. "Oh, um yes I do. Sorry for zoning out. I didn't think you were actually serious about having lunch together!"

"Um, why would you think I wasn't serious when I asked you for lunch?" he asked. "Because you're a jock and I'm not in the popular crowd. I mean, look at me! Do I look like a popular student? No, I don't. And what is your reason for asking me to lunch anyway?"

"I want to make up for knocking you down the other day. I feel bad about it." he said. "Oh, so this offer to take me to lunch is a pity offering? I don't think I am going to do lunch with you. You can shove it!" I turned and headed to class and heard him calling after me to stop. I didn't stop and walked into class. I was furious with him, but I was more furious with myself because I thought I would take a chance and see what would happen. Well I see the way it turned out and decided that I wasn't going to let myself get hurt because someone showed an interest in me.

I left first period and headed to my locker and saw a piece of paper stuck in the my locker door. It was a note from Wes, and it said that he was sorry for making me think he invited me to lunch out of pity and that his invite was not what I thought it was. He even wrote his number with a p.s. saying "If you feel more comfortable talking over the phone instead of face to face, call me. I started to feel bad so I put the note in my back pocket so I could get him to explain later. I grabbed my books for my next class and saw Mona at her locker and went to talk to her.

" I suck." I said. Mona closed her locker and gave me a look of concern and asked, "What are you talking about? What happened, cuz you look terrible."

"I feel terrible. Wes asked me at the beginning of school today when we would go to lunch together, and I asked why he wanted to go to lunch with someone like me and he said he wanted to because he knocked me down on the first day of school. I started to get mad and asked him if it was a pity lunch or what and then left to go to class. He ran after me and I kept walking and I went to my locker after first period and saw a note stuffed in my locker from him."

"And what did the note say? She asked me. I pulled the note out of my pocket and gave it to her to read, which she did and then looked at me with a look of confusion. "So what does he want to explain?" She asked. "I don't know!" I said. " I am starting to feel like the world's biggest jerk." "Well it wouldn't hurt to find out exactly what he means," she said. "Okay, if you think I should...." I replied back.

Mona walked me to my next class and told me to meet her for lunch on the quad, and I nodded that I would. I walked into my second period and began to mull over whether or not I should talk to him face to face or over the phone. My friend Jimmy snapped his fingers in front of my face to get my attention and I looked over at him with a questioning look and he pointed at the teacher. I looked up and the teacher was looking at me like she was waiting for an answer. "What was the question?" I asked her, and she had a scowl on her face and said, " I will see you in after-school detention Mr. Russo." My classmates snickered at my misfortune while I groaned in despair.

After the bell rung, I got my books and bag together and left the classroom and headed to my locker to put away my books and looked for Mona at the same time to tell her not to wait for me due to my detention. I spotted her and waved her over and told her and she said she wouldn't wait. The rest of the day passed in a blur.

As the bell rang for the end of school I put everything in my locker except my bag and my homework and headed to Ms. Rainey's classroom to do my detention. I walked in her room and sat down at a desk about three rows back and she looked up from the papers on her desk and looked at me and said, "What got into you during class this morning? You were on a different planet from what I could tell. Is there something bothering you?" I just looked at her and told her it was nothing, and she replied, "Well if you ever want to talk about anything, my door is always open to anyone. I make sure to check judgement at the door before school." I looked at her with a look of fear, maybe guessing she knows about me. I started to squirm in my desk and she quickly told me that I wasn't in serious trouble but just letting me know that she is one to listen to whatever problems That any student is going through.

I couldn't get out of there fast enough when she said I could leave. I grabbed my bag and ran out of school and started to walk home. It started to get cooler now that fall was just right around the corner. I was about halfway home when a car pulled up beside me, and I heard a voice asking me if I wanted a ride. I looked over at the car and stopped in my tracks.... It was Wes! My heart jumped in my throat and my mouth went dry. He asked if I wanted a ride and I said, "no, thanks. I'm almost home."

"No you're not!" he replied. I looked at him with curiosity and he just grinned at me. "How do you know where I live?" I asked. "I drive past your house on my way to work on the weekends." he said. "Oh, well if it's not to much a bother." I said nervously. "Not a problem, honestly." he said unabashedly. I was kind of nervous to be in a car with a guy who I have had a crush on for as long as I can remember. I climbed in his car and put my bag between my feet and crossed my arms hoping that he wouldn't notice how nervous I was. He tried to make small talk and I answered him in monosyllabic answers. I guess he noticed how nervous I was and stopped asking questions. We rode in silence til he stopped in front of my house and I opened the door to get out and felt him grab my arm. I looked over at him with a questioning look and he asked, "Will you call me later so we can talk?"

"Um, sure. If you want me to call you..." I replied nervously. "If I don't hear from you tonight, then I guess I will see you tomorrow?" he asked. "Sure." I replied. "Thanks for the ride home, I really didn't want to walk all that way home." I added as I shut the car door and headed towards the house. As I got to my door, I looked back at Wes and I waved at him and he waved back as I opened the front door and walked in.

"Mom, Dad you home?" I asked and I heard mom say she was in the kitchen. I went to drop my bag in my room and wash up for dinner. I walked in the kitchen and gave my mom a kiss on her cheek and she asked me, "Why are you home so late? Did you not get a ride home with Mona?"

" I was in detention with Ms. Rainey." I said. Mom stopped what she was doing and looked at me with a look of concern and I told her, "I was in detention because I wasn't paying attention in class, that's all honest!" I said quickly. "So how did you get home?" she asked. "Um, well I started to walk home then Wes pulled up and offered me a ride home..." I said nervously. I saw mom raise an eyebrow and turned back to making dinner.

"It's nothing mom, honestly. Jeez, it's not like I got into a fight or anything major. She just wanted to let me know that if there was anything bothering me, that I could talk to her about it if I wanted to. Like today, I kinda got into it with Wes about us going to lunch together because he knocked me down the other day and wanted to take me to lunch to make up for it and I accused him of taking me to lunch out of pity and I ran away without giving him a chance to explain himself and he wrote me this note (which I pulled out of my back pocket and gave it to her to read, which she did), and that is the reason Ms. Rainey kept me after school."

"So what are you going to do? Are you gonna talk to him face to face or over the phone? You want my two cents? Well, I think you should talk to him and soon because if I am interpreting this note right, then he really does want to apologize for knocking you down by taking you out to lunch and to get to know you better. So what are you going to do?" She said, and I just slumped against the counter with my face in my hands, groaning. "I don't know mom, on one hand I really do want to go to lunch with him and in the other I am wondering why. I mean he is absolutely good-looking and popular and I'm not any of that!" I moaned.

Dad entered the kitchen at this moment and gave mom a quizzical look and mom explained the situation. After dad heard everything, he went into protector mode and wanted me to invite Wes over for dinner sometime so that he and mom can meet Wes and get an opinion. I looked at my dad with a look of utter fear and mom agreed with dad that I should invite Wes over for dinner sometime.

After dinner, I went to my room and started my homework. I got halfway done with it when I couldn't concentrate any longer due to the fact I had thoughts of Wes running rampant around inside my head. I pulled out the note he left me and debated whether or not to call him. I dialed his number and listened to it ring.

Someone finally answered the phone and it sounded like an older lady, maybe his mom. "Hello, this is the Cooper residence," she

said. "Um, hi Mrs. Cooper. This is Andy Russo and I apoplogize for calling so late but I was hoping to talk to Wes if he's available." I said timidly. "Oh, sure sweetheart hold on while I let him know its you." she said cheerily.

"Hello? Andy?" he said.

"Um, hi. I'm sorry to call you so late but I called to let you that my parents want to have you over for dinner sometime. They noticed that something was bothering me and I told them what happened today. So after I explained everything, my mom and dad told me to invite you over for dinner."

"Oh, um ok. When is this dinner gonna happen?"

"Um, I don't know just yet but wanted to let you know that they invited you over. I also wanted to talk to you about what happened earlier today. I want to talk tomorrow after school if that's alright with you." I said nervously.

"Sure, I would like that. So I will see you tomorrow then. And tell your parents thanks for the dinner invitation and that I can't wait." he said cheerily. I smiled at how cute he sounded over the phone. I told him good night and hung up the phone. As I hung up the phone, I got a burst of happiness that went all through my body as I grabbed a pillow and clutched it to my chest and giggled like a schoolgirl. I got dressed for bed and dreamed of Wes.
