Callum walked just behind Wellesley along a wide and open foyer of the house, Wellesley stopped at a wide doorway of a formal parlor, that Callum had been in once when invited in for tea by His Grace upon Callum’s last visit here after going to meet with The King. Wellesley turned and looked at the group behind Callum and held out a hand to show the way.

“Gentlemen, please, do come in and seat yourselves to be comfortable.” Wellesley said as a man servant appeared at his elbow in formal dress, long black coat with tails. Wellesley knew he was there without looking, he reached a hand inside his breast pocket and pulled out a paper, holding it up with his fingers with bent elbow. The man servant took the paper from the fingers gently, bowed his head, turned and walked away. Callum saw all of this out of the corner of his eye. He knew that Wellesley never spoke to servants, but only gave them written instruction, it was his manner. Callum and his group came into the formal parlor and stopped seeing another man there, an older man that Callum recognized immediately.

“My Lord.” Callum said with a slight bow toward the older man.

“Gentlemen, may I present The Lord High Chancellor, His Honor John Scott, Lord Eldon.” Wellesley said to the group, “My Lord, I believe you recall Captain Quintan Callum of His Majesty’s Navy.”

“Indeed, I do.” The older man said as he stepped away from the fireplace hearth, “And with distinction, I might add. But as I recall when we first met in my chambers, you were introduced to me as a Commodore, were you not?”

“I was, My Lord, I am honored that you should remember so clearly.” Callum said, bowing his head again.

“You impressed me with that first meeting, Captain. I have listened to some of the accounts of your career spoken by Lord Hood, who seems to hold you in the highest as one of his best officers.” Lord Eldon said. His voice was rich sounding, very authoritative and firm, just as Callum remembered.

“I am honored again, My Lord, to hear that His Lordship thinks of me in such a way.” Callum said and blushed slightly, “May I present my companions.”

“Yes, I believe I know who they all are from what His Grace has relayed to me.” Lord Eldon said. His eyes were like those of a hawk, but the color was so remarkable to Callum, almost a steel grey and sharp as they shifted and fixed on Dustin, “You would be Master Dustin Perkins, I take it.”

“I am, My Lord.” Dustin said and bowed his head, Callum smiled.

“I have heard a great many things about you, my lad, all good things from Lord Fitzwarren. He has said to me many times that he wished to steal you from Captain Callum to helm the Valiant for him. He is of the opinion that with you at the wheel, there is no fleet that could stand against the Valiant.” Lord Eldon said.

“I was not aware of that opinion, My Lord.” Dustin said, his eyes flashed at Callum, who winked in reply.

“Quite.” Lord Eldon said and looked at Christian who was standing next to Dustin and bowed his head slightly, “My Lord Earl, may I offer my humble condolences on the passing of your father.”

“My thanks, My Lord. It has been quite some time since we have seen one another, I doubt you recall.” Christian said with a slight bow.

“But I do recall, My Lord Earl. You were quite young, a mere boy in fact. It was before I took the office I hold currently. We were to speak before His Majesty at Buckingham. I remember you were very quiet, standing in your father’s shadow the entire time.”

“He preferred it that way, My Lord.” Christian said almost coldly.

“Yes, I’m sure.” Lord Eldon said knowing what Christian meant and then looked at Thomas, “And this must be Lt. Tomlin.”

“I beg your pardon, My Lord,” Callum said, holding out a hand, “Captain Tomlin.”

“Ah, I stand corrected. My apologizes, Captain.” Lord Eldon said with a slight bow of the head.

“It is quite alright, My Lord. Being here in the presence of all that are assembled, my rank is rather inconsequential.” Thomas said with a bow.

“Very magnanimous of you, Captain, however, rank is established because of deed and ability of one. You have obviously earned that rank, and you do me honor, sir, with your service to His Majesty and our Nation.” Lord Eldon said.

“My deepest thanks, My Lord.” Thomas said, Lord Eldon saw them in the wide open doorway, the Regulars holding up someone, he turned his head.

“And what have we here?” Lord Eldon asked, the group parted and gave him more of a clear view, the hawk-like eyes flashed at whom he saw, “Reginald Paupling, and injured no less it seems. What are you doing here?”

“I am wondering myself, My Lord.” Paupling said with a strained voice.

“What happened to your leg?” Lord Eldon asked.

“Uh, a rather unfortunate accident with a horse, My Lord.” Callum said quickly, Lord Eldon looked at him.

“Did you bring him with you?” Lord Eldon asked.

“Yes, My Lord.” Callum said.

“I was of the opinion that you chose your friends more carefully, Captain.” Lord Eldon said.

“Mr. Paupling is more of an acquaintance, My Lord.” Callum said.

“I see.”

“I had thought that he could lend more information to our discussions.” Callum said with a slight bow of the head.

“What leads you to that?” Lord Eldon asked.

“He was present when certain events took place, My Lord.” Callum said.

“Hmmm, I see.” Lord Eldon said and gave a look toward Paupling.

“Bring him in and place him where his leg can be propped up.” Wellesley said to the Regulars and pointed toward a settee against the wall. They carried Paupling to where directed and put him down, one of them pulled over a small stool and lifted the splint rather roughly causing Paupling to let out a groan and placed the leg on the stool. Callum saw a slight smile creep over Lord Eldon’s lips for only a moment but he now knew how he felt. Lord Eldon turned and looked at Christian as the Regulars left the room.

“My Lord Earl, might I have a word?” Lord Eldon asked. Christian looked at him.

“My Lord?”

“Shall we speak privately for a moment?” Lord Eldon asked.

“I have no secrets from my companions, My Lord.” Christian said with a slight bow of his head.

“Very well. I would ask why you have not taken up the posting of your title, especially now that your father has passed?” Lord Eldon asked.

“I do not wish to take up that posting, My Lord. I am quite content with my current status in life.” Christian said.

“Yes, but your family has held it for generations.” Lord Eldon said. All eyes in the room were shifting back between them.

“That is true, My Lord. However, with the past deeds of my father and also the rather dubious reputation that my father carried, I feel that the title should be given to someone else, someone who can correct the flaws that have tarnished the title.” Christian said.

“That duty should fall to you, I would think.” Lord Eldon said.

“The title needs to be confirmed by the Duke of York, as you know…” Christian said.

“Yes, I have spoken with The Duke, that is why I bring it up. He has been waiting to hear word from you.” Lord Eldon said.

“I apologize for being remiss in that, My Lord. I will send His Grace a letter informing him of my intentions.” Christian said. Callum was once again amazed at how well Christian blended into the nobility that filled this room, he was in complete awe, as were Thomas and Dustin, by the looks on their faces.

“I beg you reconsider, my boy.” Lord Eldon said, his steel eyes flashed and almost sparkled in the light of the room, “Cambridge is a very important part of our nation. To have someone, someone who is levelheaded, as it were, to govern the seat in The House of Lords, would be a great boon and would also be a greater relief to me.”

“I can see your point, My Lord, and I thank you for your confidence in me. However, and I mean it with the deepest respect, you know I would not be received very well in The House. They would think of me as a child because of my youth, and I would never be taken very seriously.” Christian said.

“Yes, that much is true, I will not deny that. But, you must try. I beg you, reconsider.” Lord Eldon said.

“I will give it further thought, My Lord. But there are more pressing matters to be discussed and thought of first, which is why we are here.” Christian said with a steeled look and bowed his head slightly yet again to the older man.

“Quite right.” Lord Eldon said. Wellesley had been watching and listening the entire time and was impressed with this young man that had accompanied his friend Callum. He stepped forward and waved his hand to have everyone sit and be comfortable. They all did except for Callum as Lord Eldon stepped back to the mantle of the fireplace, bending an arm and placing it to lean on.

“Quintan, I had noticed the weapons that were in your carriage,” Wellesley said as he looked at Callum, “did you have issue on your way here?”

“Yes, Your Grace, we did.” Callum said as he still stood, one leg slightly forward, his hands clasped behind him.

“What happened?” Wellesley asked.

“We were set upon by the Guardsmen on the Courtney Road at the River Avon.” Callum said.

“What?” Lord Eldon asked from where he was. Callum looked over at him.

“It is true, My Lord.” Callum said, “There have been multiple attempts made against us, this was just the latest.”

“How many attempts?” Lord Eldon asked, looking very concerned.

“Once aboard ship in Southend, upon our return from our mission, twice at our home in Birmingham, and lastly on our way here.” Callum said, not changing his stance. He looked over at Paupling across the room and narrowed his eyes. Lord Eldon saw the look from Callum and looked over at Paupling himself.

“You knew.” Lord Eldon said to Paupling.

“He was there, My Lord.” Callum said.

“Did you lead this, Paupling?” Lord Eldon asked, his voice was deep, angered. Paupling looked at His Lordship and then at Callum, and then back again.

“Now would be the time, Paupling.” Callum said flatly.

“I did not lead, My Lord, but was there only to act when the time was right.” Paupling said.

“To act? To act as what?” Lord Eldon asked.

“To act as an agent, on the behalf of the Diplomatic Service, also to act for our Nation, My Lord.” Paupling said, “I was under orders to spirit the boy away, who was in the possession of the Captain.”

“You speak of the Prince.” Lord Eldon said to Paupling and then looked at Callum, “Where is he now?”

“He is safe and in hiding, My Lord.” Callum said.

“Where?” Lord Eldon asked and dropped his arm off the mantle.

“I gave my word, My Lord, that I would not disclose where he is.” Callum said.

“You are committing treason, Captain, I warn you.” Lord Eldon said, “You know who and what he is.”

“I do, My Lord.” Callum said with a slight bow of the head and then smiled softly toward Lord Eldon, “He is only a boy, an orphaned and frightened boy who deserves our pity and protection. If you knew him the way that I know him, you would see that, My Lord. He is no threat to us at all, but is apparently a threat to one man and one man only.”

“You speak of Lord Upton.” Wellesley said as he was near Callum.

“I do, Your Grace.” Callum said as he looked at Wellesley.

“The boy could be of great use, Captain.” Lord Eldon said.

“He does not wish it, My Lord.” Callum said.

“He told you that, I suppose.” Lord Eldon said.

“He did indeed, My Lord. He put it to me, as well as in the presence of my fellows here, that he wished to grow up simply with hearing birds singing, to be able to walk in the tall grass and to ride. Lord Hood understood that as well, My Lord.”

“Lord Hood knows?” Lord Eldon asked.

“His Lordship met the boy at our home in Birmingham. As I said, he understood, My Lord.” Callum said. He could see the look on Lord Eldon’s face, one of disbelief and also worry, “There is no hidden agenda, My Lord, I assure you. In fact, my account of how he was found is in my report at the Admiralty. It was quite by accident, My Lord. He did not reveal himself to us at first, who he is, in fact, he was rather guarded about it. All he wanted to do was return home to Aarhus.”

“I see.” Lord Eldon said and then turned and looked at Paupling, “Who gave you orders to act? Was it Upton?” Lord Eldon took a step closer to him, Paupling remained silent for a moment, “Out with it, man, or I will have you sent to The Tower in place of the boy and you can rot there for the rest of your days.”

“My Lord, I…” Paupling started to say and saw Wellesley coming toward him from across the room.

“You and I have been down this road before, Paupling. I could not abide your manner then but tolerated it as it was necessary, but now clearly things have changed. Tell us what we need to know, or by God, I will spill your blood right here and now in this room.” Wellesley said, his voice low and almost a growl as he stood in front of Paupling. All eyes in the room were wide.

“Your Grace, please…” Paupling said and looked frightened for the first time to Callum.

“Your Grace.” Marston said with a snap of a salute along with a click of his boot heels. Wellesley did not divert his glaring at Paupling, but knew where his officer was, standing in the doorway of the formal parlor.

“What is it, Marston?” Wellesley asked.

“You asked to be informed if anyone was seen watching the house.” Marston said, lowering his arm smartly. Wellesley turned and looked at him, “Down the street, Your Grace, in the shadow of one of the houses near the corner.”

“You’re certain?” Wellesley asked.

“Quite certain, Your Grace.” Marston said with a slight bow of the head. Wellesley turned back and grabbed Paupling by the shirt collar, twisting it up in his hand.

“One of yours, perhaps?” Wellesley asked with a bit of a growl as he leaned closer toward Paupling on the settee, who shook his head and had frightened eyes.

“No one I would know, Your Grace, I swear.” Paupling said. Wellesley let the shirt go and turned to Marston.

“Take three men, swing round from the rear and see if you take whoever it is. Bring them here.” Wellesley said. Marston snapped a smart salute.

“Your Grace, if I may.” Callum said stepping forward. Marston stopped his turn toward the door. Wellesley looked at Callum.

“What is it?”

“If we act, if you send your men, that might tip our hand, so to speak.” Callum said. Wellesley looked at Callum with question on his face, “If the house is being watched, and if it is who we think it might be, then it may be in our best interest to let them continue watching.”

“I do not see your point.” Wellesley said.

“Simply this, Your Grace. We have been watched as well for quite some time, since our return home to Birmingham. The Guardsmen, Your Grace. If they are watching, or an agent of them at least, they will report their findings back to Lord Upton, if it was he who sent them in the first place. It would help confirm what we suspect already.” Callum said. Wellesley thought about it a long moment.

“Marston, do nothing in regards to who is watching the house as Captain Callum has said, however, have their horses tended to and the carriage taken out to the stables.” Wellesley said.

“Yes, Your Grace.” Marston said with another salute. He turned and left to carry out the instructions.

“Do you wish to follow whoever is watching the house, Quintan?” Wellesley asked.

“Any one of us would be recognized almost certainly, Your Grace. If there was one that was unknown, that might be a good idea.” Callum said.

“I see your point. I may have someone that can help in that. I will see to it, excuse me for a bit.” Wellesley said. He walked out of the room and headed for the rear of the house.

“Most impressive, Captain.” Lord Eldon said, “I see that it is true what I have been told by Their Lordships about your quick thinking. It is no wonder that you are as successful as you have been in your career.” Callum gave a brief smile and bowed his head slightly.

“I thank you, My Lord.” Callum said.

“Now then, let us get to it. What is it that you know?” Lord Eldon asked. A great feeling of relief washed over Callum suddenly. His hopes that he was not going to have to bear all of this by himself alone any longer, or further burden those that he loved so much as well.

“It is much, My Lord. Perhaps you should make yourself comfortable. Mr. Paupling can lend to it as well as I have also said.” Callum said.

“Of that, I have no doubt.” Lord Eldon said as he moved to a large overstuffed chair near the fireplace and looked at Paupling, “Reginald, I will ask that you be forthcoming in any information that I require,” Lord Eldon said as he sat down as he continued to look at the man propped on the settee, “it does not require great intelligence to see how upset His Grace is, and if you do not give the information, I really can see no way of stopping him from carrying out the threat that he made to you of spilling your blood.” Lord Eldon raised an eyebrow and looked toward Callum for a moment, Paupling licked his lips and tried to adjust his leg in the splint.

“I would tend to agree, My Lord, in respect to His Grace. I have seen his anger firsthand,” Paupling said and looked at Callum, “much like yours, Captain. I will tell you what I know, My Lord, and will not hold anything back.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many hours of discussion had been given and it was now late into the evening. All that were assembled in the room seemed to be drained from thought processes as each and every point had been thoroughly discussed. They sat about or stood reflecting in what had been said. The room was silent for the longest time.

Callum had felt a great weight lifted from him, yes, but was even more relieved to hear from Lord Eldon that a course of action must be taken and swiftly to stop the possible insurrection that Upton was obviously planning. As a matter of law, however, Lord Eldon’s hands were tied as no law had yet been broken by Upton. To pursue Upton, and his possible dealings, would appear to the general populace to be a ‘witch hunt’, and would not be tolerated in the least. And, as they say, so says democracy.

Wellesley could see by the look on Callum’s face that he was thinking deeply about all of this. He knew that if he waited, his friend would come up with a plan of action as Callum had demonstrated so many times before. But another voice interrupted the silence that was in the room.

“Your Grace,” Lord Eldon said from a large chair near the fireplace, “perhaps we should have Paupling here taken to a place where he can rest his leg. I think he has given us all the information that he can under the current circumstances.”

“I would agree, My Lord.” Wellesley said with a slight nod. He turned and looked toward the wide-open doorway of the formal parlor. He raised his hand slightly and a man servant appeared out of nowhere in formal attire. Wellesley pointed one finger only toward the front door, and the man servant bowed his head, turned and walked away in the direction indicated. A moment later, Marston appeared, snapping his heels and saluting.

“Your Grace.”

“Have this man escorted and taken wherever he wishes to go. Deposit him there and then return here.” Wellesley said.

“Of course, Your Grace.” Marston said, saluting again. He turned and looked toward the front doorway, waved his fingers as two Regulars came into view, Marston nodded in Paupling’s direction, they went to him, pulling him up off the settee a little on the rough side, Callum winced slightly seeing it and hearing the pained sound that Paupling made that carried throughout the room. They turned as they lifted him to his one good foot.

“Paupling,” Lord Eldon said as he rose from his chair. The Regulars stopped their motion and the man they carried looked in the direction of the older man, “understand that we are not done as of yet in this.”

“I understand, My Lord.” Paupling said with a slight bow of the head, “Gentlemen, if you will excuse me.” The Regulars continued in their movement. All eyes watched as Paupling was carried out and to the front door of the house. Marston saluted smartly again, turned and followed them. The six of them were left alone.

“Quintan,” Wellesley said as he stood near his friend, Callum looked at him, “I have taken the liberty of securing rooms for you and your companions. A very fine boarding house that is nearby.”

“Most kind of you, Your Grace.” Callum said with a brief smile.

“Captain, I think we should have further discussions tomorrow.” Lord Eldon said, looking at Callum, “After what has been said here this evening, I am becoming more than slightly alarmed. I must consult with my aides and also to study some text of law to find out how best to proceed.”

“It is understandable, My Lord.” Callum said.

“I know of this boarding house that Wellesley speaks of. It may serve our purpose for those discussions. Perhaps we should meet in late morning or early afternoon after I have had chance to research a bit.” Lord Eldon said.

“As you wish, My Lord. My companions and I are at your service.” Callum said with a bow. He straightened and Lord Eldon stepped closer and put out his hand. Callum took it and grasped the soft warmth of it, feeling the inner strength that came from this man. Thomas, Christian, and Dustin rose to their feet.

“Stay on your guard, Captain. I fear that this is going to go badly.” Lord Eldon said.

“I would agree with you, My Lord.” Callum said.

“Your carriage is waiting for you, My Lord.” The soft-spoken man servant said at the wide-open doorway of the parlor. He was bowing formally. Lord Eldon flashed his eyes in his direction and then back to Callum.

“You and your companions have been through much, Captain. I also feel that there will be need to ask more of you.” Lord Eldon said.

“We will do whatever is required of us, My Lord, my word on that.” Callum said and gave him a bit more of a squeeze to emphasis his words further.

“Thank you.” Lord Eldon said, Callum bowing his head slightly again, Lord Eldon looked over at the others, “Thank you to all of you.” Lord Eldon said, all three bowed their heads as well. Callum released his hand, Lord Eldon steeped around Callum and stopped at Wellesley.

“Allow me to escort you.” Wellesley said to Lord Eldon, “Excuse me, gentlemen.”

Callum and his group bowed as Wellesley led Lord Eldon out of the formal parlor toward the front door of the house, leaving the group alone. They straightened and Thomas looked at Callum and went to speak, Callum lifted his hand to stop him and shook his head briefly with a flash of his eyes. Thomas closed his mouth.

“Later.” Callum whispered. Thomas nodded and eased himself a bit. Dustin was a bit wide eyed and was feeling very apprehensive. He stepped toward Callum and came close to him.

“What are you thinking?” Dustin asked in a whisper.

“We can discuss it later.” Callum whispered in reply, raising an eyebrow.

“You give your word like that? For all of us?” Dustin whispered.

“I said, later.” Callum whispered, now narrowing his eyes. Dustin let out a sigh, a sigh of anger, and then shook his head, “What would have me do?” Callum asked in a whisper and then saw Wellesley out of the corner of his eye coming back into the parlor. Callum turned and bowed slightly as did the others with his return. A Regular was behind Wellesley.

“Is everything alright, gentlemen?” Wellesley asked.

“Yes, Your Grace.” Callum said, looking at his companions for a moment and then back to Wellesley, “We were just discussing of how much the events of today have drained us.”

“I see. I can imagine. It is a long trip from your home, I know, and also with your run in with the Guardsmen, I have no doubt that you must be more than tired, all of you. I am having your carriage brought around for you.” Wellesley said.

“Thank you, Your Grace.” Callum said.

“In the morning, I have a meeting with my general staff. Then I am off to Buckingham to meet with The King. I shall return here by early afternoon at the latest. Lord Eldon will send word when he when he is ready to meet with all of you again.” Wellesley said.

“Of course, Your Grace.” Callum said.

“You should find that this house I have secured for you quite comfortable. I have stayed there myself a few times prior to purchasing this house. However, if it is not satisfactory, I…” Wellesley said but Callum interrupted him with a smile.

“I have no doubt that it will be more than satisfactory, Your Grace.” Callum said with a slight bow, “Our needs are very modest, I assure you.”

“Yes, quite.” Wellesley said with a smile out of the corner of his mouth.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Tomorrow then.” Wellesley said, Callum was bowing as they stood on the front step of the house, “Quintan, I have told you before. That is not necessary as we are friends.”

“Your Grace is far too kind.” Callum said as he straightened.

“Nonsense.” Wellesley said and put out his hand. Callum looked at it and then took in his own, “Now, you listen to me,” Wellesley said as he pulled Callum closer to him, “stay on your guard. London can be a very dangerous place as you well know. He knows you’re here. And with that, he will not act on his own. He will send others and I am certain that they will not be Guardsmen.”

“Sound advice, Your Grace.” Callum said with a faint smile. Thomas, Christian, and Dustin were getting into the carriage out in the street at the walk, a Regular was set to drive them.

“Arthur, please.”

“Of course,…Arthur.” Callum said and his smile widened.

“Until tomorrow then.” Wellesley said and took his hand back.

“Good night, Arthur.” Callum said with a nod.

“Good night.” Wellesley said and then looked down toward the carriage, “Good night, gentlemen.”

“Good night, Your Grace.” They all called back and bowed their heads as Callum came down the steps toward the carriage. He reached the door and climbed in, closing it and sat next to Thomas. The reins were snapped and the carriage set off. Dustin sat forward in the seat across from Callum and looked at Callum with a bit of a glare.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“What did you mean, giving your word like that to Lord Eldon?” Dustin asked and almost had clenched teeth.

“Simply that he could count on us.” Callum said and looked back at Dustin, “Would you like to go back home and not have this resolved?” Dustin rolled his eyes and sat back.

“What can we do, Quintan?” Thomas asked, “It is a matter of the law. Lord Eldon knows that.”

“Very true, Thomas, but I think I know what Quintan means.” Christian said as he sat with his arms folded.

“Oh? Do explain to us, My Lord Earl.” Thomas said as he looked across to Christian.

“I am not above wiping that smug look off your face, Thomas Tomlin.” Christian said with a glare, Thomas eased in the seat. Christian saw it and looked at Dustin, “It is very simple really, Dustin. Lord Eldon cannot act, but we can, and we can with his support in this, acting for him.”

“What? To commit murder?” Dustin asked as he looked at Christian.

“No, not murder, justice, plain and simple. If we have the support of the office of The Lord High Chancellor, and act accordingly, it would be justice. You know that, don’t you, Quintan?” Christian asked and looked at Callum, who nodded.

“You can’t be serious.” Dustin said as he looked at Callum, “You will start a man-hunt for this Upton and carry into the streets. What would the people think? Are we to be deputized by Lord Eldon’s office then?”

“I am not sure what His Lordship will propose, but…”

“You’re itching for a fight. You didn’t get enough today with the Guardsmen.” Thomas said as he looked over the side of the carriage.

“I beg your pardon?” Callum asked as he looked to his left at Thomas, “Would you care to repeat that?”

“He’s right.” Dustin said and sat back, “And you heard him.”

“What’s gotten into you two?” Callum asked as he looked back and forth at each of them, “Have you forgotten why we’re here? Have you forgotten your wounds, Thomas?” Callum asked Thomas and then looked at Dustin, “Have you grown accustomed to looking over your shoulder, Dustin? I thought you were tired of this constant being on your guard. Worrying day and night over if someone will come in and slit our throats in our sleep. Well, what about it?”

“So, you would pick up your sword, march in and take him, just like that?” Dustin asked.

“No, of course not.” Callum said and was getting angry, “Did you not hear what His Lordship said this evening? They have to have proof in order to arrest him.”

“Yes, I heard him, I was there and I was listening.” Dustin said and was angry himself, “But how long will that take? Are we the ones that are going to have to do it, to find that proof? How long do you wish to stay here?”

“I haven’t given that much thought. It depends upon what Lord Eldon says tomorrow.” Callum said.

“I suppose you’re with him in this?” Thomas asked Christian.

“Of course.” Christian said flatly, “Aren’t you?” Thomas looked over the side of the carriage as it pulled up in front of a grand looking house. A footman came down and opened the carriage door, bowing as he stood out of the way for them.

“We can finish this later.” Callum said and got out of the carriage. He turned back and grabbed his sword and put it though the loop in his belt. He flashed his eyes at Christian who did the same with his sword. Thomas rolled his eyes and got out. The Regular up in the seat turned and looked down at Callum.

“Excuse me, sir. I was ordered to take the carriage back and see to your team.”

“Yes, thank you.” Callum said and then looked at the footman, “We need to pull our trunks off the hopboard there.”

“I’ll see to it, sir.” The footman said and bowed his head, “I’ll bring them in for you.”

“Thank you.” Callum said. He turned and looked at his group and then walked up the steps of the grand house. He opened the door and went in, the others followed him. It was the most lavish looking, elegantly decorated house Callum had ever been in. Not even Buckingham compared to what he saw inside. Elegant furniture, paintings of landscapes in gilded frames hung on the walls. The walls themselves were very tall and covered with regal looking wallpaper that blended together and the patterns in it were more like a mural seemingly going on and on down the long wide foyer, broken only by open doorways. The woodwork was elegant and stood out proudly defining the doorways. Oil lamps hung on the walls lighting the space quite well, and did not cast shadow. It was more than impressive to say the least, almost breathtaking to Callum. He turned and looked at his companions for a moment.

“We’ll never be able to afford this.” Thomas said above a whisper.

“This is magnificent.” Christian said softly as he looked around.

“Good evening, gentlemen. Welcome to Haskill House.” They all turned and looked toward the voice. The older man stood there in very formal attire. A high collared shirt wrapped with a broad white tie, ruffled on the breast, covered by a vest, a satin sheen to it, and a formal jacket, long, black, with tails. The shoes that the man wore were mostly covered by his long pants, black also, the shoes were highly polished and stood out, “I am Bernard Haskill. How may I help you?”

“My name is Callum, Quintan Callum.”

“Ah, the friend of His Grace.” The older man said and gave an almost formal bow, “I was told to expect you, although I thought it would be earlier in the evening.” The smooth baritone voice said as he straightened.

“Yes, I apologize for the hour. We were held up with business.” Callum said.

“I see. There is no need to apologize, Captain.” The older man said and raised a finger a bit, “May I call you Captain?”

“Yes, if you like.”

“You are a Captain in His Majesty’s Navy, are you not?” Haskill asked.

“Indeed I am.”

“I had thought that was what His Grace had said. You gentlemen are most welcomed. I have rooms prepared for each of you, per His Grace’s request. But, may I offer you some refreshment before showing you upstairs? It might help you to sleep more comfortably. I know the hour is rather late, but I was also told that you have been travelling quite some time.”

“Indeed, we have.” Thomas said. Callum looked over his shoulder at him, “What? We haven’t eaten yet. I’m hungry.”

“Good, then you can buy supper.” Callum said softly. Thomas lifted his eyes and sighed. Callum smirked and looked back at the older man, “Yes, something light would be fine, thank you.” Callum said as he looked back at the elegantly dressed man.

“If you will follow me, gentlemen.” The man said holding out a hand, “The Drawing Room is but down the hall here.”

“Oooh, the Drawing Room.” Thomas said in a whisper as he leaned close to Christian. They followed the elegantly dressed man down the hallway and watched as he slid back tall doors that contained etched glass inside the wooden frames. He bowed slightly and let them pass him. Callum looked around the room as he stepped inside and again was amazed with the elegant furnishings, surrounded by bookcases that lined the walls. Windows to one wall, high, and covered by expensive looking draperies that were heavy and tasseled all along their edges as they reached the floor, which was covered with carpets that were plush and regal in their pattern.

“No wonder His Grace stayed here.” Dustin whispered to Callum.

“I hope this room is to your liking, gentlemen.” Haskill said with his rich baritone voice and went to a table in the center of the room, long and shining in its surface from the lamplight, surround by high back chairs. Haskill went to the head of the table and pulled out the chair there and bowed his head slightly, “Captain, if you would.”

“Thank you.” Callum said as he came over to it. He looked at it and then sat down, adjusting his sword in his belt. The seat was upholstered and cushioned and was very comfortable.

“Gentlemen, please make yourselves comfortable. I shall return shortly with your refreshment.” Haskill said and walked toward the door. Thomas, Christian, and Dustin came over to the table, pulling chairs for themselves and sat down around Callum.

“I have never seen anything like this before in my life.” Thomas said as he looked around the room from his chair.

“Yes, I agree.” Callum said, “Even Buckingham Palace is not like this. I remember from when I met The King.”

“Avery fine house to be sure.” Christian said, “I could get used to this.”

“Was your family’s home like this, Christian?” Callum asked.

“No, not elegant like this.” Christian said.

“It was very dark from what I remember, dark and somewhat cold.” Dustin said. He was looking around as well, but only with his eyes.

“My father would not have anything like this. He had more simple tastes. He tried to keep it as sparse as possible. The only room of the house that was comfortable was my mother’s bedroom, warm and inviting, like this is.” Christian said.

“I remember, where we found the tub.” Dustin said as he looked at Christian. Their eyes met and Christian smiled at him.

“Yes, like this.”

“Yes, yes, it was.” Dustin said, “How long do you plan on staying?” Dustin asked Callum.

“As I said, it depends upon what Lord Eldon says tomorrow.” Callum said.

“I think you should…” Dustin started to say but was interrupted by a young man setting a tray down on the table. Dustin looked up at him and did a double take look and went a bit wide eyed. The others followed and were in awe at who was there.

The group assembled at the table were handsome, all without doubt, Christian had true beauty, it was true, but this young man that was there, now standing back from the table was breathtaking to all of them. His face was that made by a master of marble, his hair was as black as the bottom of a well, but shining in the lamplight. His eyes sparkled and were the deepest blue, bluer than the sea Callum thought in that moment. His hands were the only other thing that could be seen that was in skin and not covered by clothing. They were tanned and hairless, devoid of any scar or mark as he clasped them in front of himself.

“Will there be anything else, gentlemen?” The wondrous beauty asked. No one could answer him, but could only shake their heads at him, “Thank you.” He said and gave a slight bow of the head. All eyes and heads watched him walk out of the room.

“I never saw anything like that at your home either, Christian.” Thomas said and then grunted in pain as Christian elbowed Thomas in the shoulder very hard.

“Have a care.” Christian said.

“What? You saw him, didn’t you?” Thomas asked as he looked at Christian. They all turned and focused as to what was on the table before them. Sliced fruits of all kinds, some they did not recognize. Cheeses of different types, cut and sliced were in the center of the tray, all items were surround by small biscuits, not quite the biscuits they were used to aboard ship, like hard tack, no, these were soft, warm, and tender to the touch Callum found out as he picked one up. He slowly put it to his mouth and took a very small bite of it and then smiled and looked at Dustin.

“Martha will cane both of us if you tell her about this and what these taste like.” Callum said. Dustin lifted an eyebrow and took one off the tray and put it to his mouth, taking a small bite and then rolled his eyes.

“Now this, this is good.” Dustin said and held it out in front of him a bit toward Thomas and Christian.

“Wine, gentlemen?” Haskill asked as he appeared at Callum’s elbow with a tray. It carried glasses and a decanter. He set it down and opened the stopper, pouring for each of them.

“I must say that you have a very fine house, Mr. Haskill.” Callum said as he having a glass placed in front of him.

“Thank you, Captain.” Haskill said as he handed out the rest of the glasses, “I am the third generation here in this house. My son, Hiram, who was just here will be the fourth and hopefully our reputation will grow.”

“A strikingly handsome young man.” Callum said.

“Thank you. He takes after his mother in that respect, God rest her.” Haskill said, “I have your rooms ready when you like and can have Hiram show them to you.”

“Thank you again, Mr. Haskill.” Callum said, “This wine is excellent. It is not bitter by any means and is very fragrant as well.” He set the glass down, “Where might I find it?”

“It is actually a French wine, Captain. I have several bottles of it that were purchased before the war. It actually comes from the Champagne region of France.” Haskill said, “Perhaps I will send one with at the end of your stay with us.”

“I appreciate that. I would be more than happy to purchase it.” Callum said. The older man smiled and bowed his head slightly.

“We can discuss that, Captain. I shall leave you to enjoy your light supper. When you are ready, simply pull the draw cord there by the fireplace,” Haskill said and pointed to a broad gold looking rope that hung almost from the ceiling, “Hiram will take care of you. I bid you gentlemen good night.” Haskill said and bowed slightly and walked out of the room almost silently.

“What do you make of him?” Dustin asked softly as leaned to Callum.

“I’m not quite sure. There’s something about him that seems familiar to me, but I can’t place it.” Callum said picking up his wine glass.

“Yes, I see what you mean. He seems familiar to me as well.” Thomas said.

“Maybe that’s what it is.” Dustin said as he sat back a bit in the comfortable chair.

“You think it as well?” Callum asked. Dustin nodded and then looked at Christian, “And you, Christian?”

“It’s like I know him. I’ve seen him before, but I don’t remember where. And I have never been here before, obviously. It is a bit strange.” Christian said. He picked up another piece of sliced fruit off the tray.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The group followed Hiram, the more than exceptionally good looking young man, up the wide stairs to the second floor. He spoke only a few words before they went up. His voice was soft and almost feminine to Callum, it had a caring sound to it. But it was his eyes that could speak volumes, the way they sparkled with their deep blue color. He stopped at the first door in the wide corridor and turned to look first at Thomas.

“Your room, sir.” Hiram said and held out a hand.

“How many are there?” Thomas asked.

“There are four, as there are four of you.” Hiram said and seemed to have a bit of a question on his lips but did not ask it.

“We only require two, my good man. I suppose I should have made that a bit more clear to your father.” Callum said. Hiram looked at him and smiled.

“I see. If you wish to have only two rooms, then by all means, sir. We wish you to be as comfortable as possible during your stay here with us.” Hiram said, his voice soft. Thomas opened the door. It was lit inside, he stepped in and his mouth opened in what he saw. Christian stepped up close behind him and looked in as well. The bed was immense. The columns at each corner were large and carved wood. Draperies hung from the overhead frame, tied back to those columns and trailed to the floor. There was a fire softly burning in the small fireplace and it was very inviting to them. Thomas turned back and looked at the handsome young man.

“I have never seen such a room. I know we will be very comfortable, thank you.” Thomas said and was given a soft smile in reply. He and Christian walked into the room and closed the door behind them.

“Good night, gentlemen.” Hiram said before the door closed, bowing his head slightly. He looked at Callum and Dustin, nodding slightly and they followed him down the corridor a bit more and stopped two doors down from Thomas and Christian. Dustin had seen their room and was becoming excited about what theirs might possibly be like, “Here you are, gentlemen. I think you will be comfortable here. His Grace stayed in this room when he was with us.”

“Did he now?” Callum asked with a smile. Dustin stepped forward and opened the door. The room was dark and he couldn’t see well inside.

“I apologize.” Hiram said seeing it dark, “I had lit the lamp on the bedside table just a bit ago. It must have blown out. I’ll light it for you again.”

“Do not bother, my good man.” Callum said, stopping him, “We can manage. But thank you.”

“As you wish. Breakfast is served until nine. The door between your rooms here in the corridor is a bath and dressing room, a place where you can freshen yourselves. Have a restful night, gentlemen.” Hiram said and gave them a slight bow. He walked away, back toward the stairs as Dustin entered the room, going for the lamp on the bedside table. Callum stepped in behind him, his hand on the knob of the door, giving Dustin light until he reached it. Callum went to close the door and saw something in the dark.

“I certainly hope this room is just as nice as what Thomas and Christian have, especially if His Grace…” Dustin said and stopped as Callum drew his sword in a flash and pointed it in the dark.

“Stand fast or I will run you through.” Callum said in his voice of authority, not blinking once. Dustin spun on his heels, his eyes wide.

“What?” Dustin asked thinking Callum was speaking to him and then saw he was pointing his sword into the dark.

“Dustin, the lamp.” Callum said. Dustin turned back to the bedside table and quickly struck a match, lifting the glass of the lamp, setting it to the wick and the room slowly began to get light and glow. Dustin set the glass back in the holder and turned back. Callum still pointed his sword and Dustin saw there was someone else in the room with them. A tall man in very fine clothes standing against the wall, bathed in shadow. His eyes went wide.

“Who are you?” Callum asked with his voice of authority.

“My real name is Albert Bancroft, Captain. But, to most I am known as…”

“Pennysort.” Callum said interrupting him and the tall man stepped out of the shadows toward the point of the blade in Callum’s hand. There was a slight gasp heard coming from Dustin.
