TRUE CONFESSIONS - 9

CARNAVAL IN RIO 1966 

     I never planned to visit Brazil. It was an accident of fate. In the summer 1965, I was watching a movie on TV about Carnaval in Rio. I decided that it would be a fun experience. So I went there in 1966. Once through customs in Rio, and into a taxi, I had the strangest sensation that I was returning home!

    After checking into a hotel, the loud and irresistible music pouring through the hotel window enticed me and my two traveling companions to literally run into the street. I was overwhelmed by the costumes and the vibrancy of the music. And the young men! Never had I seen so many fabulous male bodies in various stages of undress, walking, or rather, dancing on the street. Because they spend so much time on the beach, Rio males go out of their way to develop their bodies.

    What set me aflame were some of the boys of darker complexion, whose eyes were contrasting shades of blue or green. Never had I seen dark-skinned people whose eyes were other than brown. On the beach, I saw tons of guys, of all ages, with some of the most beautiful bodies I had even seen in the flesh. And all of them handsome. Maybe there were women on the beach, but I didn’t see them. No sex in this episode, but the next one is full of adventures, one of which will make your hair stand on end..

     Caught up in the frenzy of Carnaval, I literally didn’t sleep from Friday night until Tuesday night. I fell in love with the country, with Rio, the males, and the Portuguese language. I determined to return the next year.
