“Oh, I'm not the star dad, I just made the winning goal at Marshall last year. We're a team, no one is better than anyone else,” I explained.

“That's very admirable DJ,” Valerie complimented.

It was now our turn to help ourselves to the food as Billy brought his hand up to the the table so he could help himself to the meatloaf as I reach for the mashed potatoes. I looked over to Dad and Valerie and they haven't started eating yet.

“You can start to eat if you like,” I offered.

“Aren't we going to pray?” Valerie asked.

“Of course,” Dad replied, “You can do the honors Valerie,” he continued as Billy and I looked at each other.

My mom and dad weren't overly religious and we went to church on occasion, but praying before meals was rare for my mom and dad as we were growing up. As Valerie prayed Billy and I held hands under the table and while Valerie and dad had their eyes closed Billy raised my hand and kissed it before lowering it again under the table. We began to eat after Valerie finished and most of the meal was quiet until Dad broke the silence.

“Is Kyle working at the firehouse today?” he asked just to start casual conversation.

“Yes, he's working a double shift,” Billy replied.

“Kyle, that's the uncle that's staying with you two?” Valerie asked.

“Yes, we love Uncle Kyle staying with us. He's our favorite uncle,” I beamed.

“I noticed you only have two bedrooms here? Doesn't he get tired of sleeping on the sofa?” She asked.

“Oh, he doesn't sleep on the sofa. He's staying in DJ's room, and DJ sleeps with me,” Billy said as a matter of fact.

“DJ sleeps in your bed with you?” Valerie asked kind of flustered.

“Billy and I sometimes shared a bed as kids, so it's no different now,” I replied.

“Well, as kids it is different, but you're grown men now, that's just not right,” Valerie said.

“We're brothers Valerie, and it is 2023 not 1923!” I stated.

“DJ! Mind your manners to your guest!” My dad said angrily.

There was silence for a few moments until Billy spoke up.

“So, where did you two meet?” Billy asked to change the subject before he or I would be angry enough to accidentally spill our incest secret.

“Well, I met this wonderful woman at church. It started out that we both worked this volunteer dinner for families in need that our pastor organized. He also introduced us to each other at the dinner and then we went out for coffee afterwards, and a few days later a date after that. It's all because of our pastor,” dad explained.

“That's really nice, I'm happy for you two. Jake's dad is a pastor too,” I said.

“Who is Jake?” Valerie asked.

“Didn't my dad tell you? Jake is my boyfriend,” I said proudly.

“Your boy...boyfriend? Oh,” Valerie said as she looked at my dad and then back to me.

“What's wrong? I asked sincerely.

“Well, I don't really approve of such relationships,” she said.

I was shocked and appalled that first my dad didn't have the guts to tell her his son was gay before coming into our house and secondly in this day and age that this actually bothers people who it really doesn't concern.

“Well I guess it's a good thing that I'm not asking for your approval, because Jake and I are getting married after we graduate college.” I said.

“Married?” Oh DJ! Being gay is one thing, but getting married to that gay boy? Seriously?” my dad said in disbelief.

“He's not that gay boy, his name is Jake, dad!...and I love him! God, first Jake's grandpa and now you???” I shouted.

I totally freaked that my dad was not supportive, I got up and stormed off to the bedroom and slammed the door as Valerie looked to my father.

“Don't worry dear, he'll be back after he cools off,” he said.

“See dad! This is why we didn't tell you. We knew that you had an issue when you first found out about DJ and Jake, and I knew somehow you'd have a problem with this too. Why can't you just be happy for DJ and Jake? Why must everything be about how you feel and not how DJ feels? This is the happiest DJ has ever been. Mom would probably be rolling over in her grave right now if she knew how you're treating DJ and Jake! She loved Jake and she hoped they would get married someday.” Billy said angrily, but trying to keep his cool.

“Billy, you shouldn't speak to your father like that,” Valerie said.

“Stay out of this, you're not family!” Billy finally roared because he knew how much dad upset me and it was eating at him.

“Bill, you're out of line son. Apologize to Valerie!” Dad said.

“I'm out of line? You come into our house and you can't even be happy for your own son, happy that he's happy. Happy that he will be married to the person he loves to the ends of the earth. You can't even be honest with your girlfriend that you have a gay son! You have no idea how much you have just hurt DJ, do you?. Get out!” Billy shouted.

“Come on son, calm down,” Dad replied.

“No! Get out and stay out until you decide to apologize to DJ, and accept him and Jake as they are, because they are never going to change for you! They are perfect just the way they are!” Billy continued as tears were now streaming down his face.

Dad and Valerie got up from the table and headed out the front door of the cottage as Billy closed the door behind them. He then walked into the bedroom but I wasn't there. He turned towards the bathroom and tried the door but it was locked from the inside.

“DJ, it's me, open the door!”

I didn't answer.

“DJ answer me!” he said getting a little agitated.

“Why does dad hate me so much?” I asked as I cried on the other side of the door.

“He doesn't hate you DJ, he just doesn't understand what it means to be gay,” Billy replied.

“It certainly sounds like he hates Jake, and if he hates him he must hate me. Dad would probably be happier if I were dead instead of being gay.”

“DJ! Don't ever say anything like that, ever!” Billy shouted.

“I'm sorry Billy,” I said while dropping a bottle onto the bathroom floor.

“What are you doing in there?” Billy asked.

“Nothing," I said as I continued to cry.”

“Open the fucking door or I'm going to kick it in!” Billy said as his temper and fear rose.

I unlocked the door and Billy entered. He saw his pain medication from the hospital spilled all over the floor and assumed the worst.

“Oh my fucking god, please tell me you didn't take these pills, please babe,” He said as he grabbed me and hugged me and then looked me in the eyes.

“What?” I asked.

“Please be honest with me DJ, I wont be mad. Did you try to overdose on my pills?” he said through his tears.

“No Billy I didn't.”

“Swear on mom's grave, that you didn't, please!” he said forcefully.

“I swear on mom's grave Billy, I didn't. I was trying to get the aspirin and I dropped your medicine bottle.”

“Oh thank god,” Billy said as he pulled me in for a hug. “I was so scared babe, I heard you crying and heard what you said about being dead, I though it was too much for you. Oh god I love you so much DJ,” Billy said as he continued to hug me.

Billy's phone rang but he didn't answer it and kept hugging me instead.

“I'm okay Billy I swear, answer your phone,” I said.

Billy pulled his phone out of his pocket and walked into the bedroom to answer it.

“Hey you, how are you?” Billy said happily.

[On the phone] I'm good, how are my two favorite brothers?” Kelly asked.

“Two favorite? We're your only brothers!” Billy replied with a laugh.

[On the phone] “Stop being a wise ass Billy!”

“Sorry sis. What's up? How's Kevin?”

[On the phone] He's doing great, and part of the reason I called.

“Do tell,” Billy replied.

[On the phone] I thought that now since our house is finished, we'd like you and DJ to come visit for a few days before your next semester starts. You two never really got to spend quality time with Kevin, and this week I'm going to be busy at the office a lot. Sooooo, that means you can have quality time to bond with your new brother-in-law. So, what do you say Billy?

“Actually, your timing is perfect! We just had another blowout with dad and I think DJ and I need to get away somewhere new for a little bit.”

[On the phone] “Why what happened?”

“Long story short. His new girlfriend didn't approve of DJ being gay and him having a boyfriend. Get that shit!”

[On the phone] “Sounds like when Kevin and I met her a few weeks ago. She didn't approve of the fact that we lived together before we got married and she nearly had a coronary when she realized we had sex before marriage too,” Kelly said as she and Billy laughed.

“Yep that's her!” Billy responded with another laugh.

[On the phone] So, when are you two heading down here?” Kelly asked.

“If you're ready for us, we can leave tomorrow,” Billy replied.

[On the phone] “I'm ready for you two now, miss you two so much. See you soon. Love you both!”

“We love you too Kelly!” Billy replied and disconnected the call.
