The Goodbye, Final Chapter

A few days later, they made the drive north into the New England woods.

The road wound higher and higher, the trees growing thicker and darker around them. Golden sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting long shadows across the pavement. Kiran sat quietly in the passenger seat, staring out the window, his paws clenched tightly in his lap. Farren reached over and took one of his hands, squeezing it gently.

Neither of them spoke much. There wasn’t much left to say.

Eventually, they turned onto a long gravel driveway that curved through the forest. At the end of it stood a beautiful three-storey house nestled among the pines. It had wide wooden decks on every level, large windows that glowed with warm light, and a peaceful, welcoming presence that somehow made the ache in Kiran’s chest feel even heavier.

Farren parked the car and turned off the engine.

They sat there in silence for a long moment, the only sound the ticking of the cooling engine and the distant chirping of birds.

Then Kiran unbuckled his seatbelt and climbed into Farren’s lap. He buried his face in the wolf’s neck and began to cry, quiet, shaking sobs that tore straight through Farren’s heart.

Farren wrapped his arms around him immediately, one paw stroking slowly down Kiran’s back while the other cradled the back of his head.

“I don’t want to lose you,” Kiran whispered, voice breaking. “I just got you back.”

“I know, baby,” Farren murmured against his ear. “I know. I’m so sorry.”

They stayed like that for a long time, holding each other in the front seat of the car, Kiran crying softly against Farren’s shoulder while the wolf pressed gentle kisses to his temple and whispered how much he loved him.

Eventually, they pulled themselves together and walked up to the house.

A tall, black-furred wolf with striking golden eyes opened the door. He smiled warmly when he saw them, though there was sadness in his gaze.

“Farren,” he said, pulling his brother into a tight hug. “It’s been too long.”

“Roan,” Farren replied, voice thick. He stepped back and gestured to Kiran. “This is Kiran.”

Kiran looked up at the black wolf and felt a little stunned. Roan was incredibly handsome; tall, broad-shouldered, with a calm, confident presence and those intense golden eyes. Before he could say anything, another figure appeared behid Roan.

A massive wolf, mostly pearly white with soft gray accents, stepped into view. He had icy blue eyes and a long, jagged scar running down his left eye and across his muzzle. He was calm and stoic, radiating quiet strength.

“This is Zariel,” Roan said. “My packmate.”

Kiran swallowed. “Hi.”

Zariel gave a small, respectful nod. “Welcome, Kiran.”

Inside, they sat around the large wooden table in the open kitchen. Sunlight streamed through the big windows, and the air smelled faintly of New England pine and fresh coffee. Farren and Kiran explained everything, the Void, the curse, the impossible decision they had been forced to make.

Farren would return to the Void.

It was the only way for him to survive. And Farren refused to let Kiran watch him slowly waste away. He wanted Kiran to have a family. A place to belong. A support system.

“You don’t have to find a new lover here,” Farren said gently, squeezing Kiran’s paw. “That’s not what this is about. I just… I want you to have people. A pack. Somewhere safe where you’ll never be alone again.”

Kiran’s eyes filled with tears, but he nodded.

Roan reached across the table and placed a warm paw over both of theirs.

“You’ll always have a place here, Kiran,” he said softly. “No matter what happens. This is your home now, if you want it.”

Zariel spoke for the first time, his deep voice calm and steady. “We take care of our own.”

They stayed for dinner, talking late into the evening. There were moments of laughter, quiet stories, and long stretches of comfortable silence. But eventually, it was time.

Farren and Kiran walked back out to the car together. The others stayed inside, giving them privacy for their final goodbye.

They climbed into the backseat.

Kiran straddled Farren’s lap and kissed him deeply, desperately, like he was trying to pour every unsaid word into the kiss. Farren’s paws slid under Kiran’s shirt, touching him like he was trying to memorize every inch of his body. They undressed each other slowly, the windows fogging up as their breathing grew heavier.

Kiran rode him slowly at first, moving his hips in deep, sensual circles, then faster as the need between them grew. Tears slipped down his cheeks even as he moaned Farren’s name. Farren held his hips and thrust up into him, knot swelling until it finally locked inside with a wet, intimate pop.

They stayed knotted for a long time, foreheads pressed together, breathing each other in.

“I love you,” Farren whispered, voice cracking. “More than anything in this world or the next.”

“I love you too,” Kiran sobbed. “I’ll never stop. Someday, we'll find a way..."

When the knot finally went down, they dressed in silence, both of them crying openly now.

Farren kissed Kiran one last time, slow, deep, and aching, then got into the driver’s seat.

Kiran stood on the porch, watching as Farren started the car. Their eyes met through the windshield.

Farren gave him a small, broken smile.

Then he drove away.

Kiran collapsed onto the porch steps, sobbing so hard he could barely breathe. His whole body shook with grief.

A few minutes later, Roan came outside and sat beside him. He didn’t say anything at first. He just wrapped a strong arm around Kiran’s shoulders and let him cry.

Eventually, Kiran leaned into him, exhausted and emotionally wrecked.

“…Thank you,” he whispered.

Roan squeezed his shoulder gently.

“You’re not alone anymore, Kiran. I promise.”

Farren drove for hours through the dark.

When he finally reached the tear in the Void, the other guardians were waiting for him on the other side.

He stepped through.

The scarred black panther, the massive brown bear, and the sleek snow leopard stood there in the swirling violet landscape, their faces solemn.

Farren looked at them, eyes tired but filled with quiet determination.

“I’ll find a solution in here someday,” he said. “I swear it. I won’t stop looking.”

The panther nodded slowly.

“Of course you will,” he said. “We believe in you.”

Farren turned and began walking deeper into the Void, the swirling colors of the tear closing behind him.

And somewhere far behind him, in a quiet house in the New England woods, a little red fox sat on a porch with tears in his eyes, leaning on a black wolf who had promised to keep him safe.

Farren walked alone into the endless, beautiful, terrible Void.

And this is the end of Kiran's origin story.  But far from the end of his journey.  His tale continues in the main series, The Lust and the Void, with Roan, Zariel, and many others.  And hell, maybe he will meet Farren again, someday.
