Red Light

The sun had gone down by the time we left the hotel again, and Amsterdam had transformed into something electric. Neon lights glowed along the narrow streets of the Red Light District, pink and red washing over everything like a fever dream. Music spilled out of bars, the air smelled like fried food and perfume, and crowds of tourists moved in packs, laughing too loud and pretending they weren’t nervous. David walked beside me with that familiar swagger, hands in his pockets, looking way too excited for what we were about to do.

“Alright, this is it,” he said, voice low but pumped. “Professional reset time. No more striking out with civilians. We get in, get off, get out. Simple.”

I nodded, trying to match his energy even though my stomach felt like it was tied in knots. Every step closer made my chest tighter. The little silver bike charm from earlier rested cool against my skin under my shirt, a stupid reminder of how sweet the day had been before we got here. I kept picturing David’s shirtless back on the bike, the way his dick had swung in those loose shorts at the gym, the thick tension in the shared shower. Now we were walking straight toward strangers who were supposed to fix all that. Hilarious. My heart was doing stand-up comedy at my expense again.

We turned onto the main strip. Windows lined both sides of the street, each one lit up with a girl posing behind glass like a living mannequin. Some danced slowly, some waved, some just stood there looking bored and beautiful. David slowed down, eyes scanning like he was shopping for sneakers.

“Damn,” he muttered. “Options.”

We stopped at the first window. The girl inside had long dark hair and a tight red bodysuit. She smiled when David leaned in and tapped the glass lightly. He started flirting right away, that easy charm turned up to full volume.

“Hey, beautiful. How much for an hour of making two lost American boys very happy?”

She laughed and opened the door a crack, quoting a price in accented English. David haggled a little, playful but firm, throwing in dumb compliments about her smile and her legs. I stood there trying to look interested, nodding along, but my mind kept drifting back to the way David’s bare shoulder had brushed mine in the shower earlier. The girl was pretty, no question, but the spark just wasn’t there for me.

We moved on to a couple more windows. A blonde with killer curves waved us over and flirted back hard when David leaned in. Another with short black hair and tattoos gave us a sultry smile and negotiated like a pro. David handled most of the talking, cracking jokes about American stamina and promising we’d be respectful. I threw in a few lines here and there, trying to sound game, but my voice felt flat even to me. Every time David laughed or bumped my arm, my chest ached with how much I wanted this whole night to be about us instead.

Finally we landed on two girls who seemed perfect for the “reset” plan. They were pretty and friendly, both in their mid-twenties, one with wavy brown hair and bright eyes, the other with sleek blonde hair and a warm smile. They leaned out of their adjacent windows, chatting easily.

“You two are cute,” the brunette said, looking us up and down. “First time?”

“First time doing it like this,” David admitted with a grin. “We’re trying to have a legendary night.”

They named a price each. It was steep but fair for the area. David started negotiating, keeping it light and flirty. After a couple minutes of back-and-forth, they settled on a number that worked for all of us.

The blonde checked her watch and winced. “It’s rush hour right now. Lots of guys coming through. If you want both of us at the same time, we can share one room to save you some money. Same price as one girl for an hour, but you get both. Faster turnover too.”

David didn’t even hesitate. “Hell yeah. Sharing sounds perfect. Saves cash and makes it more fun, right?”

He looked at me, eyebrows raised, clearly expecting agreement. The two girls smiled expectantly, friendly and professional.

I hesitated, heart hammering. Sharing one room meant watching David with one of them while I was with the other. Up close. No walls. No pretending. The idea made my stomach drop, but saying no would look weird. It would force questions I wasn’t ready to answer. So I forced a nod and a half-smile.

“Yeah,” I said, voice tighter than I wanted. “Sharing works. Let’s do it.”

David clapped me on the back, grinning wide. “That’s my boy. Efficient as fuck.”

The girls laughed and stepped out of their windows, locking up behind them. The brunette took David’s arm, the blonde took mine, and they led us down a narrow side alley toward a discreet entrance.

“Room’s this way,” the blonde said cheerfully. “You boys ready to have some fun?”

David shot me a quick thumbs-up over his shoulder, still riding that excited energy. I walked beside the blonde, trying to smile back, but inside I was a mess of jealousy, arousal, and that deep, terrifying love that refused to let go. The neon lights flickered around us as we followed the girls inside, the weight of what was about to happen pressing down harder with every step.

My best friend was about to fuck someone else right next to me, and all I could think about was how badly I wished it was still just the two of us in that crappy hotel bed, tangled up and pretending the rest of the world didn’t exist.

The room was smaller than I expected, barely big enough for the single queen bed pushed against one wall and a narrow chair in the corner. A red lamp cast everything in a warm, hazy glow that was supposed to feel sexy but mostly came off like a cheap stage set. The two girls moved around us with easy professionalism, closing the door and flipping the lock with soft clicks that sounded way too final. The brunette with wavy hair smiled at David and tugged him toward one side of the bed. The blonde with warm eyes took my hand and guided me to the other side. There was no divider, no curtain, nothing. Just open space and the four of us sharing the same air.

David was all in from the start. He laughed at something the brunette said, low and genuine, and pulled her close like he had been waiting for this exact moment since we landed in Amsterdam. His hands moved confidently over her hips as they kissed, deep and hungry. He stripped off his shirt fast, then his shorts, revealing the body I had spent the whole day trying not to obsess over. Naked now, already fully hard, he looked excited in a way that made my stomach twist. He was into it. Really into it. He climbed onto the bed with her, murmuring something that made her giggle, and they started moving together right there, side by side with us. His thrusts were steady and eager, the bed creaking softly under them, his breath coming in short, satisfied grunts.

I tried to match the energy. The blonde was pretty, friendly, and clearly good at her job. She kissed me softly at first, her hands sliding down my chest as she helped me out of my clothes. Her touch was skilled and warm, but it felt off, like someone was playing the right notes on a piano that wasn’t mine. I kissed her back, forcing myself to focus on her mouth, her body pressing against me. I got hard enough to start, but it was mechanical, the kind of response that happened because a naked woman was touching me and my body remembered what it was supposed to do. We lay down beside David and his girl, close enough that I could hear every sound they made, every shift of skin on skin.

My eyes kept drifting.

David looked incredible in the red light. His back muscles flexed with each thrust, sweat already starting to gleam across his shoulders. The way his hips moved, powerful and sure, sent a rush through me that the blonde’s hands couldn’t match. I only got fully hard when I looked over at him. Really looked. The sight of him naked and aroused, lost in the moment with her, did something to me that nothing else in the room could. My body reacted instantly, almost painfully, like it had been waiting for permission to admit what it wanted. I turned back to the blonde, trying to stay present, but my mind kept slipping sideways.

She was nice about it. She whispered encouragement, her fingers working me over with practiced ease, but the chemistry felt completely wrong. It was polite and professional and empty. I faked the enthusiasm as best as I could, moaning at the right times, running my hands over her like I meant it. Inside, my thoughts were a quiet storm. This was supposed to fix everything. This was the efficient reset David had hyped up all day, the clean, professional solution to whatever weirdness had been building between us since the pills. But all I felt was a hollow ache. Every time I closed my eyes and tried to lose myself in her, my brain fed me flashes of David instead. His laugh from the bike ride. The way his foot had brushed my ankle under the breakfast table. The soft, slow kiss we had shared in the hotel room the night before.

I kept glancing over. David was fully into it now, his girl on top, his hands gripping her waist as she moved. He looked satisfied, focused, the kind of turned-on that came easy for him. I envied it and hated it at the same time. My own body responded strongest to those stolen looks, to the sight of him moving with purpose just a few feet away. The blonde noticed I was distracted but didn’t call me out on it. She just kept going, patient and kind, and I hated myself a little more for making her work harder than she should have had to.

Eventually, I couldn’t drag it out any longer. I faked the orgasm, burying my face against her shoulder and making the sounds I thought I was supposed to make. My body went through the motions, tensing and shuddering on cue, but there was no real release, no satisfaction. Just a flat, mechanical ending that left me feeling emptier than before. She smiled at me afterward, sweet and professional, brushing my hair back like she believed it. I smiled back, the lie sitting heavy in my throat.

In that moment, lying there naked beside a pretty girl who had done everything right, the realization hit me quietly and completely. I had zero sexual interest in anyone else now. Not her. Not any of the girls we had tried all week. Only David. The thought settled in my chest like a stone, heavy and undeniable. My body, my mind, everything in me had narrowed down to one person. My best friend. The guy I had known since we were kids. The one whose scar I had wanted to kiss that morning. The one whose casual touches had started to feel like home. I was in love with him, and it wasn’t some leftover high or vacation illusion. It was real. It had changed everything.

David finished a couple of minutes later. He let out a low groan, his body tensing as he came, then collapsed beside his girl with a satisfied laugh. “Damn. That was exactly what I needed.”

The brunette smiled and kissed his cheek. “Glad we could help.”

On the surface, he looked happy, relaxed, the cocky grin slipping right back into place as he sat up and reached for his clothes. But I knew him too well. There was something off in the way his eyes flicked toward me for half a second, something uneasy underneath the easy satisfaction. The air in the small room felt thick with it, like we had both gone through something that was supposed to fix us but had only made the cracks more obvious.

We dressed quickly, the girls chatting lightly about how nice we had been compared to some of their other clients. David paid them with a generous tip and threw in a couple more jokes, keeping the energy up. I went through the same polite goodbyes, forcing smiles that felt stretched too thin. The door clicked shut behind us, and we stepped back out into the neon-lit alley.

The walk back to the hotel was quiet. Too quiet. The earlier excitement David had carried all evening was gone, replaced by a heavy, awkward silence that neither of us wanted to break. Our shoulders brushed a few times as we moved through the crowded streets, but it didn’t feel playful anymore. The neon signs reflected off the canal water, pretty and distant, while my mind replayed the last hour on a loop.

I felt even more in love with him now, and heartbreakingly certain that my feelings had changed everything. The day had been perfect in its own stupid way, bikes and souvenirs and shared showers and casual touches that had felt like they meant something. Tonight was supposed to reset us, take us back to normal, back to being just best friends. Instead, it had clarified something I couldn’t unsee. I only wanted him. Not girls. Not resets. Not anything else this trip could offer. Just David, the way we had been tangled up in the hotel bed, the way his laugh sounded when it was only for me.

He walked beside me, hands in his pockets, glancing over once or twice like he might say something, then deciding against it. The silence stretched between us, easy on the surface but loaded underneath. My heart kept up its quiet, bitter little routine, cracking jokes about how I had come to Amsterdam chasing European girls and instead ended up falling, completely and stupidly, in love with the one person I was never supposed to want like this.

We reached the hotel lobby without a word. The receptionist from the first night gave us a knowing look but said nothing. David pressed the elevator button, and we rode up in that same thick quiet, standing close enough that I could smell the faint mix of his sweat and the girls’ perfume still clinging to his skin.

I was more in love than I had ever been, and more heartbroken than I knew how to handle. Because now I knew for sure. My feelings had shifted everything, and there was no easy reset that could take it back.
