Bikes and Bros

We grabbed the rental bikes right after breakfast and took off into the Amsterdam streets. The city was putting on a show, sunlight sparkling on the canals, narrow bridges arching over the water, and flowers spilling out of every window box. David pedaled beside me, still in those loose gray shorts and the fitted black t-shirt that clung to his chest like it was personally invested in making me suffer. The wind felt perfect, cool and fresh, cutting through the leftover haze from last night.

About twenty minutes in, David glanced over with that familiar cocky grin. “Screw this. Too hot.” He pulled over to the edge of the path, yanked the black t-shirt off in one smooth motion, and stuffed it into his backpack. Shirtless. Just like that. The sun hit his skin, lighting up every line of muscle across his back and shoulders. His broad frame looked even better out here in the open air, sweat already starting to make him glow a little. I tried not to stare, but my eyes kept drifting to the way his shoulders moved when he pushed the pedals, strong and easy.

Romantic feelings hit me like a sneaky left hook. Watching him ride shirtless through this beautiful city, laughing at nothing, made my chest do this stupid fluttery thing. I was supposed to be focused on tonight’s big reset plan, not falling deeper for the way the light caught on his skin or how comfortable he looked just existing. Pathetic. My heart was out here writing poetry about my best friend’s back muscles while he was probably thinking about how many girls he could impress tonight.

David caught me looking and laughed. “Eyes on the road, Romeo. Unless you want me to steer for you the rest of the way.”

“I wasn’t staring,” I lied, face heating up. “Just making sure you don’t blind some tourists with all that reflective skin.”

He flexed one arm while still pedaling, showing off. “Jealousy doesn’t look good on you, man. This is prime vacation glow. You should try it.”

We kept riding, the path winding along the canals. David stayed playful and touchy-feely the whole time, like the morning awkwardness had never happened. Every time we slowed for a corner or stopped at a little bridge, he reached over and steadied my handlebars with one hand, his fingers brushing mine. “Don’t tip over. I’m not carrying your ass back to the hotel.”

His bare arm bumped against mine as we rode close, warm skin against warm skin in the sunlight. Once he leaned over and slapped my thigh lightly when I pointed out a houseboat that looked like it belonged in a movie. “You’re actually pretty good at this biking thing. Who knew?”

We stopped at a small outdoor market along the way, the kind with stalls selling souvenirs and random tourist crap. David hopped off his bike and wandered over like he owned the place. I followed, locking my bike next to his. The tables were covered in keychains, magnets, tiny wooden clogs, and weird little trinkets.

David picked up a small silver necklace with a simple bike charm on it. He held it up to my chest, tilting his head like he was judging how it looked. “This would look good on you. Simple. Not too flashy. Matches your whole ‘I overthink everything’ vibe.”

I snorted. “You know me way too well.”

“Obviously. I’ve been putting up with your overthinking since fifth grade.” He grinned and bought it anyway, paying the guy before I could argue. He stepped closer and fastened the necklace around my neck himself, his fingers brushing the back of my neck. The touch lingered for half a second longer than it needed to. “There. Looks solid. Now you’ve got something to remember this trip by. Besides all the rejection.”

I touched the little bike charm, warmth spreading through my chest that had nothing to do with the sun. He knew exactly what kind of thing I would actually wear. Not too loud, not too cheesy. Just... us. “Thanks, man. You didn’t have to.”

He shrugged like it was nothing, but his smile was genuine. “What are best friends for? Besides banging each other when we’re high on mystery pills, apparently.”

The comment was light, tossed out casually as he turned back to the stall to look at some stupid shot glasses. We both laughed, but it landed differently for me. Every easy joke, every casual touch, every time he bought something because he knew me that well, made my feelings swell bigger and scarier. I wanted to pull him behind one of the stalls and kiss him stupid, tell him the only souvenir I needed was more mornings waking up tangled with him. Instead I just bumped his shoulder and helped him pick out a ridiculous magnet shaped like a tulip for his mom.

We got back on the bikes after that, the necklace cool against my skin. David stayed close the whole ride, arm brushing mine whenever the path narrowed, reaching over to steady me again when we hit a bumpy section. “Stick with me. Don’t want you getting lost in all this romance crap the city’s throwing at us.”

“You’d miss me too much,” I shot back, trying to keep my voice light even though my heart was racing.

“Obviously. Who else is gonna laugh at my jokes and pretend I’m funny?”

The sun kept warming his bare shoulders as we rode, highlighting every shift of muscle. I was a mess of romantic longing wrapped in self-deprecating humor. Here I was, pedaling through one of the most beautiful cities in the world with my shirtless best friend, the guy I was quietly in love with, while he planned to reset everything tonight with strangers. Funny in the most painful way.

We finally pulled up outside the gym, locking the bikes to a rack out front. David swung off his bike, still shirtless and glowing from the ride, and clapped a hand on my shoulder as we headed toward the entrance.

“Ready for the next part of normal bro day?” he asked, grinning.

I nodded, the little bike charm resting against my chest like a secret. “Yeah. Ready.”

My feelings for him felt heavier than ever, warm and terrifying and way too real under the Amsterdam sun.

We locked the bikes and stepped into the small gym. The place smelled like metal, rubber mats, and faint sweat. It was decent enough, with a mix of locals and tourists scattered around the equipment. David didn’t even hesitate. The second we were inside, he tossed his backpack on a bench and stayed shirtless, like the ride had made clothes optional for the rest of the day. His loose gray shorts hung low on his hips, the thin fabric doing absolutely nothing to hide the heavy outline of his dick.

I tried to focus on warming up, but it was useless. Every time David moved, that loose material shifted and the thick shape underneath flopped and swung noticeably. He loaded up the bar for squats, bent down, and the swing was right there, obvious and distracting as hell. When he pushed back up, thighs flexing, the motion made it bounce again. My mouth went dry. Heat pooled low in my stomach even though I kept telling myself to look anywhere else.

He moved to the bench press next, lying back, gripping the bar. His chest and abs tightened with every rep, sweat starting to glisten across his skin. The shorts rode up a little with the effort, and that heavy dick shifted again, swinging side to side as he controlled the weight. I was supposed to be spotting him, but my brain kept short-circuiting. All I could think about was how good he looked, how familiar every inch of him was, and how badly I wanted to touch him instead of pretending we were just two bros getting pumped for hookers tonight.

David caught me staring more than once and grinned through his reps. “You good over there? Or are you just enjoying the show?”

“Shut up and lift,” I muttered, but my voice came out rougher than I meant. My own shorts were starting to feel tighter, and I had to adjust myself discreetly between sets. The arousal mixed with this deep, aching romantic pull that made everything feel heavier. I wasn’t just horny. I was stupidly in love with the way he moved, the easy confidence in his body, the way he kept glancing over at me like I mattered. It was romantic and filthy at the same time, and it was killing me slowly.

We kept going for a while, trading off on machines, David staying shirtless the whole time. Every squat sent that obvious flop through the thin shorts. Every lift made his muscles pop and his dick swing. I was a distracted, lovesick mess, trying to laugh at his jokes while my heart did flips and my body stayed half-hard the entire session. He knew me well enough to keep the banter light, slapping my shoulder after good sets or bumping my hip when we switched spots, but none of it helped the growing tension humming under my skin.

Eventually we called it. David wiped his face with a towel and nodded toward the showers. “Come on. Let’s rinse off before we smell like regret.”

The shower area was shared and open, just a row of heads with a couple of partitions that didn’t do much for privacy. We stripped down completely, towels tossed on a bench. Naked. Steam started filling the space as the hot water kicked on. David stepped under the spray first, water running down his broad back, over the curve of his ass, and along his thick thighs. His dick hung heavy between his legs, still a little swollen from the workout, water cascading over it in rivulets.

I stepped under the shower next to his, trying to keep some distance, but the space was small. Our shoulders brushed. The steam made everything feel closer, hotter, more intimate. I washed quickly at first, but my eyes kept drifting. The way water traced the lines of his chest, the way his abs flexed when he turned, the casual way his dick rested against his thigh. My own body reacted whether I wanted it to or not, blood rushing south as the romantic ache in my chest mixed with raw want.

I grew quiet, the easy banter from the bike ride and workout fading. The unspoken desire sat thick between us, heavy in the humid air. I wanted to step closer, press him against the tile, kiss him slow and deep under the spray. I wanted to tell him the only reset I needed was more of this, more of us, naked and close and real. Instead I stayed silent, scrubbing soap over my skin while my heart pounded.

David noticed. He always noticed. He turned toward me, water streaming down his face, and tilted his head. “You good, man? You got quiet all of a sudden.”

I forced a small shrug, keeping my eyes on the tile in front of me even though every inch of me was aware of how close his naked body was. The steam curled around us, making the air feel charged and intimate. “Yeah. I’m fine. Just… tired from the ride, I guess.”

He didn’t push right away, but the tension didn’t ease. We stood there naked under the hot water, shoulders occasionally brushing, dicks hanging heavy in the shared space. The silence stretched, thick with everything we weren’t saying. My love for him felt overwhelming in that moment, romantic and steamy and terrifying all at once. I wanted him so badly it hurt, but I kept washing like everything was normal, like my heart wasn’t screaming for something more than a quick reset tonight.

David stayed under the spray a little longer, glancing over at me every few seconds, the air between us humming with unspoken want. The proximity of our bare bodies, the steam, the quiet, it all built into something thick and electric. I wasn’t sure how much longer I could keep pretending I was fine.
