 At that point the others rushed out of the room and Mike cried “dad please calm down.”

“I can’t son, as they going to kill my boy and I can’t let that happen” Luan was becoming hysterical and hearing the commotion Connor appeared with ex-wife Ally and Gabe as well as 2 burly security guards who were about to thrown Luan out of the hospital.

Eddie and Colby stood there helplessly, looking upset having seeing Ashton who was always so full of life, lying there looking so pale and fragile. This was so traumatic and they were crying and holding on to each other for support.

Mike said “doctor, how do you know that my little brothers brain dead then?”

“Well we haven’t done all of the tests in full yet, but there is no activity in his brain!”

Mike looked helplessly at him and was lost for words. Then Connor came forward and said “doctor are you 100% sure about this, that your patient is actually brain dead?”

“Who are you” the Consultant asked him? And Connor replied looking at Mike and Gabe and going red in the face “I am a close friend of the family.”

The man replied in an annoyed why are you questioning me tone “well friend of the family, I can assure you that the patient has sustained a serious head injury, and other serious injuries. He suffered severe trauma when the truck hit the car he and his friend, the other young man was travelling in. And from all of the injuries he suffered, it appears that his brain is not functioning fully.”

Connor stopped him and said slowly “ah ok doctor, so there may be a chance that his brain may function, if he is given a chance and so Ashton is not actually is at the end then is he?” Mike interjected and said “yeah doc you not 100% sure are you?

At which point, they all jumped in and started to question the man. In the midst of this Jane their mom face timed Colby, who told her what was happening. He shouted for silence, and she asked the consultant was he 100% sure that her son would never recovered. He replied “yes” unconvincingly wishing he had sent one of his less senior employees to deal with this situation.

He looked at the hall clock impatiently, as he had golf course booked and was eager to get away. He started when Jane said loudly “Luan / Boys, don’t met this man do this, get a second opinion will you please!”

So they all insistent that he did this and he left them in huff rolling his eyes and scowling and tutting, and they were all talking amongst themselves cursing the man loudly. An hour had passed, and Mike and Eddie went to look for the consultant and the receptionist said “Senior Dr Salah will  come and speak to you soon, but he has been delayed, please be patient.” And a few minutes later the doctor  arrived and said “hello everyone I am … “ and Mike and Eddie exclaimed “ah Doctor Ahmad can you help us please.?”

Doctor Ahmad Salah the Jordanian American, who still lived across from Gabe’s and Mikes old home, had saved Eddies life after Gabe shot him accidently” replied hello everyone” and they all greeted him. Mike cried “ah Doctor Ahmad, please tell us you can help us?”

“Dad this is the man that save our Eddies life after Gabe here shot him!”

Eddie asked “Doc is my brother gonna die?”

Doctor Salah looked at him and said “looking at his case notes, and reading everything, I am sorry to say that at the moment it 99% certain that he will die tonight!”

Colby said quietly “but doctors, there is a 1% change he will not die then?”

“Yes that is a possibly ,the next few hours are crucial so go and spend time with you son/brother/friend, and talk to him and be with him and tell him that you love him.” He said this so matter of factly, that they all nodded and walked into his room except Mike and Gabe who stayed outside ,and sat on the chairs in the corridor.

Mike asked him, “so how is Caleb?”

Gabe replied “well he looks bad but not as bad as Ashton, and he is sleeping as they have given him something to make him sleep, as he is in so much pain. Ah this is goddamn mess isn’t it Mike?”

“Yes it is” he replied and they sat there in silence each deep in thought for an hour.

“Shit I better call Julio and my boss Cesar Rodriguez to tell them I wont be in work for a while.”

Mike said slowly “Julio and Cesar Rodriguez, what you mean my Julio, I mean my ex Julio?”

Gabe replied breezily “yeah of course I am talking about those two guys. Yes they are married for 3 years now ,and they are very happy and they are great employers, taking me on with my criminal record. And paying me a decent salary.”

“Ah ok” Mike said his face dropping and his heart racing. It’s far too tiring and seeing him lying there looking so vulnerable and Ashton as well who could die tonight, puts things into perspective.

Hearing that his brother could die set Mike off and he started crying and Gabe put his arms around him and said “it ok love, Ashton’s a fighter, he will be ok, you’ll see he will be ok.”

 They stayed there for a while and eventually got up and went into join the rest of the family to watch over Ashton.
