Tiburtius and Crassus

The next morning Tiburtius awoke first, Crassus s arm still around him holding him close. he wriggled free and went to bathe, as he returned Crassus was awake. They were interrupted by news of a courier from Rome. The emperor had returned there due to some problems and asked Crassus to join him there. They stopped at a couple of Mansio s on their way overnight and on the fourth day as they Joined the Appian Way, Crassus pointed out the large aqueducts bringing water from the hills into the city. They paused on the hill approaching the city so Tiburtius could see the city shining in the sunlight.

They were greeted at the House of the Quintilli by the Emperors retinue sent out to greet them. Marcus Brutus the senator, greeted his old friend and was immediately introduced by Crassus to his son. Oh said Crassus, all this was strange to Tiburtius who did not know much about the empire and its problems. They made haste and soon Marcus was showing them to their quarters, Tiburtius thought Crassus lived well at the Villa but nothing like this set of rooms.

Coloured marbles were on the floors and murals of Roman Gods and myths adorned the walls. the ceilings were coffered and gilded. Marcus left them to prepare to meet the Emperor that evening, promising to come for them and escort them to the Janiculum. After Marcus had departed, Crassus showed his son the Forum from their windows, Tiburtius was very impressed with their lodgings, though he was quick to tell Crassus that impressive as it was, the Villa felt like home to him now.

Tiburtius listened as they travelled up the hill to the Janiculum, Marcus pointing out the Forum, The Via Sacra leading to the vast temple of Jupiter on the Hill, they finally reached the palace entrance and were greeted by the Empress and her son, while the Guards took Crassus and Marcus to the Emperors quarters for their meeting. Tiburtius instantly liked the Empresses son, who was two years his junior. He insisted on taking Tiburtius immediately to see his newly acquired Spanish Stallion. the lad agreed it was a fine specimen and would be a brilliant ride when tamed. they then played some games until the Empress said it was time for Tiburtius to meet the Emperor.( to be continued)
