The next morning Ken and Brad woke at their regular time, went for their PT run, and made it to the lab gym. After Ken’s post-workout exam, by the time they got back home, showered, and ate breakfast, it was almost 0900. They had no clients scheduled that day and planned to stay at the house unless anyone called or needed them. The house was a wreck, and they decided to spend the morning knocking out chores.
While clearing the table from breakfast, Brad mentioned, “I’m going to talk with Lane in a few minutes if he’s available. Do you want 'pool boy' or 'clean house' duty to start?”
“It’s nice and sunny, so I’ll start with ‘pool boy,’ and if you aren’t done by the time I’m finished, I’ll get started on the house.”
“Sounds good. I’ll see if he and Bry can be here for a late lunch and dinner, but we’ll need to hit the grocery store before they come over.”
“Okay, then get your ass in gear and start talkin’ while I clean the pool in record time. We’ve been sloppy, and it’s gonna take a little longer ‘ta clean this pigsty of a house.”
<><>
Changing into swimming trunks, Ken headed outside to clean the pool while Brad sat on the couch, leaned his head back, and relaxed. Taking a deep breath, he stilled his thoughts before calling out to Lane, careful not to make it too loud.
Lane?
After a slight pause, Lane’s voice, crisp and clear, replied in Brad’s mind.
Hey Brad, how’s it hanging?
Is this a good time? If you’re busy, I can get with you later.
Naw, man, I’m good. Bry and I don’t have any clients until tomorrow, so we’re chilling at the house. We were going to call you guys in a bit and see if you wanted to get together later.
Great minds think alike. One of the reasons I wanted to talk to you is to see if you two want to come over for a late lunch, and then we can grill steaks for dinner once it cools off. The weather’s supposed to be beautiful, so we can eat by the pool and catch up on stuff.
That sounds great. So, what’s been going on? You guys have been awfully quiet lately. Everything okay?
Yeah, we’re better than ever. We appreciate the space everyone’s given us, but we talked last night about how much we miss spending time with you two and the other guys and want to get back in the loop. The other reason I want to talk to you specifically is to go over some things I’ve learned to do. You and I are a little ahead of the curve and should take advantage of learning from each other. I think you, me, Loy, Dar, and Bill need to start meeting and sharing, even training together, as far as this mental stuff goes. I’m sure the doc has a plan, but I’d like to get a jump on it. Just like Bry and Ken, we need to adjust to our new abilities and help each other over any bumps that come up.
Wow, Brad, you don’t know how happy I am to hear you say that. Bry is super supportive, but he can’t relate to some of this new shit, and he’s frustrated not being able to help me like he thinks he should.
Yeah, that’s the kind of stuff I’m talking about. Some of the things I’ve learned will help everyone a LOT, and I’m sure you’ve got some tricks up your sleeve too. I think it’s time you, me, Ken, and Bry merge and completely open up to one another. If you don’t want to, we’ll understand, but I think if we’re going to move forward as a group, that has to happen. Once the four of us do it, it’ll be easier to convince the other guys. Honestly, I can’t see any of them not wanting to, but it’s still a big step.
Yeah, I think you’re right, Brad, I really do. I can’t wait to see what you’ve learned. I’ve picked up a few things on my own, too, so we can compare notes.
Let’s see if we can do that now. It’ll save time, and I want to try more than just talking over distance anyway.
Alright, you take the lead. I’m open.
Concentrating, Brad slipped into Lane’s mind. Even though Lane was willing, Brad met mild resistance but gently pushed through. It wasn’t a ‘deep’ merge, but it was a more profound connection than Lane had with anyone other than Bryan. As their minds touched, Brad was in awe of his friend. Lane’s mind was beautiful! For someone who tried so hard to show a tough exterior, he was a gentle and caring person on the inside. And so creative!
How’s that, Lane?
Wow, Brad, this is amazing. Damn! You’re a smart fucker, and strong as shit! No wonder you blew my eardrums off from the bank!
Recounting memories of the last few weeks, Brad shared details of the bank robbery, the mental constructs, and the Mall of Georgia incident with the little boy, Drew. Lane opened his memories but didn’t shield anything, and Brad saw everything, including Lane and Bryan making out every night and a few times during the day.
Oh shit! You weren’t supposed to see that!
Lane’s embarrassment came through loud and clear.
Don’t worry, Lane! When we merge completely, we’ll see all that stuff anyway. You guys are fucking hot together just so you know. Seriously, don’t be embarrassed. Here, take a look at this.
Brad shared the previous night’s memory of he and Ken’s first time together.
Oh my God, man, that was beautiful!
The emotional overspill was powerful, and Lane teared up over sharing the experience between his two friends.
I had no idea you two had such a rough time back then. When we went through those classes together, I never had a clue how upset you were. I wish we would’ve known each other better so I could’ve helped you through that. Brad, I’m having a hard time putting how I feel into words, but I know you can feel what I mean. This type of sharing is beautiful. I think this is the way people were meant to be, and somehow, we fucked it all up. Even though it stings at first, the freedom to be me is phenomenal.
Yeah, I know what you mean. As great as it is with me and Ken, or you and Bry, think how much better it will be when all of us can have this together. I feel like we’ll be making a huge step in getting to that point.
Their conversation lagged as they took a few minutes to rest in each other, enjoy their friendship, and learn more about each other. Even after a twenty-year friendship, there were many things they didn’t know about each other. Neither of them was consciously aware of the wetness in their eyes, an outward expression of the intimate bond they shared as friends and brothers.
I could spend all day like this. To borrow a phrase from Ken, I thought the outside was nice, but fuck me, Lane, your mind is a beautiful place to be. Alright, we need to keep things moving if you guys are going to make it over, so let me see what you’ve been up to.
The difference between their development was immediately evident. Lane had tried things Brad never even considered.
Lane, I’m impressed. What you’ve accomplished so far is astounding, and mostly different from what I’ve been doing. It makes me wonder if we can all do the same things or not. Obviously, we can talk to one another, but I bet some of us will be better at certain things than others. Like that song you wrote; that probably saved our lives. We can never repay you for that.
At the time, I didn’t know what I was doing, and it was frustrating as hell, but the doc said I needed to let my unconscious mind work it out. I’m not sure, but that might have been a one-time gig. Nothing like it has happened since. It was scary, to be honest. I felt like a conduit for something I didn’t have any control over.
Yeah, I bet. Don’t worry, though, we’ll figure it out. We aren’t in this alone anymore, especially now, and if we stick together, we’ll be fine.
Brad continued looking and getting comfortable in Lane’s presence. His mind was well organized, but in an odd, creative way. It was nothing like Brad’s, but once he understood it, everything made perfect sense.
Brad did a double-take at what he saw next.
Holy shit, Lane! You can heal?!
Yeah! Pretty cool, huh? A few days ago, I cut myself in the kitchen, and it was an instinctive reaction. It hurt like a mother, and when I’m in pain, it’s pretty much the only time I don’t like making out with Bry, even though it accelerates my natural healing. So, I sort of borrowed some of Bry’s energy. I can do it intentionally now, and it has an effect on him, but of course he doesn’t mind. He’s like a mother hen when I get hurt. For such a big, rough-looking stud, Bry’s a real teddy bear on the inside once you know him like I do.
You know man, I think we all are. Ken and I have talked a lot about this stuff. As partners, and as a team, we need to be a refuge for one another and protect ourselves. The doc has given us some great advice on how to handle it all, but it’s hard to be around ordinary people now. I hate keeping barriers up all the time except when Ken and I are alone, or with you guys, but it’s too painful listening to and seeing the lies and ugliness in people out in public. The brokenness is the worst; it physically hurts. We need to be a shield for one another and keep each other healthy and grounded. That’s why I want to start a training regimen with you, me, Bill, Dar, and Loy. Ken and the others will have to be involved too; like with your healing trick, it looks like we can’t do that on our own. I’ll talk to the doc and see what he thinks before I move forward.
Alright man, sounds like you’re on top of things as usual. I can’t wait to get over there. Hey Brad, I know you can feel this, but I need to say it, buddy. You’re an amazing man, and I can see why Ken is head over heels in love with you. I’m so glad you’re my brother and in my life… and my head!
Thanks, Lane. You know I feel the same way. Now to borrow another phrase from Ken, it’s time to shut off the waterworks and get things rolling before you guys come over.
Laughing, Lane thought: Okay, bud. Do you want us to bring anything?
Thanks, but we’re good. We’re headed to the grocery store after we clean the house. We also want to plan a cookout later this week or next weekend and have everybody over. It’s been a while, and the last one was a little too action-filled and stressful.
You can say that again! No weird-ass soul-eating creatures of doom allowed! Alright, Brad, I’m going to help Bry in the garage.
Oh, yeah! Bring your guitar if you don’t mind?
Sure thing. See you shortly and give me a holler if you need to until we show up. Jesus, man, I love this stuff. Fuck AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon, I have like five bars in my head all the time, and we don’t get dropped!
Chuckling at Lane's comment, Brad thought: Okay, Lane, c’ya in a bit.
<><>
Brad made his way to the backyard as Ken finished cleaning the pool. Already hot outside, Ken’s darkly tanned skin glowed with a fine sheen of sweat in the bright sun, emphasizing his physique. His new sunglasses made him look even hotter, and Brad smiled inside at how lucky he was to be with such a man.
Hearing the door open, Ken looked over to see Brad coming towards him and noticed two things right away. Brad’s eyes were red, with fresh tear trails on his cheeks, and his shorts contained a not insignificant bulge. The tear trails concerned him, and he quickly closed the distance between them, pulling Brad into a hug.
What’s wrong, B?
Kissing Ken’s cheek, Brad hugged him back, enjoying the heat of his body and his stubble-covered jaw.
Everything’s fine. Lane and I shared some things, and it was awesome but emotional. I didn’t realize I was crying until I got up. Fuck Ken, he’s got a beautiful mind. I can’t wait for us to merge with him and Bryan.
Pulling Ken deeper, Brad shared most of what he and Lane talked about.
Smiling, Ken shook his head and said, “Man, I’m still gettin’ used ‘ta this.”
Pulling back enough to grip Brad’s shoulders, Ken held him at arm’s length. Looking down at the bulge in Brad’s shorts, he asked with a grin, “So what caused that? I’ll be glad ‘ta help, but it may have ‘ta be a quickie, we need ‘ta get movin’.”
Brad grinned, saying, “When Lane and I first shared, he didn’t shield anything, and I got an eyeful of him and Bry making out for the last few weeks. Jesus, Ken, they’re hot together.”
Ken’s little kid grin appeared, and he said, “No shit!? You are so sharin’ that with me! You can make a theater with a bed in it, and we can watch them on IMAX and fuck like rabbits while we watch.”
“I like your thinking, but we need to wait until after we’ve gone deeper with them before we do anything like that. I don’t want to hurt their feelings.”
“Yeah, you’re right, but I can’t wait!”
“Me, either!”
“Alright, let’s get the house squared away and head out.”
<><><>
As they put the last of the groceries away, Bryan and Lane pulled in the driveway. Bryan, ever the cook, took charge of marinating the steaks and putting lunch together. Brad stayed in the kitchen to help, while Lane and Ken went out to the pool, and a short time later, they were enjoying good food, beer, and great weather. It was another hot day, so after cleaning up, everybody jumped in the pool to cool off.
Brad broke out the net, and they played a few sets of water volleyball. When they tired of that, Lane wanted to play chicken, so Bryan and Ken were the horses with Lane and Brad on their shoulders. Laughing and roughhousing like teenagers, the four men worked up a serious appetite, and it was a pleasant, relaxing afternoon for all of them.
<><><>
Around 1700, lounging around the backyard, getting sun and being lazy, Brad went into the house to take a leak and decided it was a good time to move forward with his idea.
Sticking his head out the sliding glass doors, he hollered, “Hey guys! Can you all come into the kitchen?”
As they came in, Brad had the table cleared off, and chairs pulled out.
“Everybody take a seat.
“Alright guys, Ken and I have wanted to take this step with you two for a while now, but the opportunity hasn’t come up. I say there’s no time like the present. It’s time the four of us, as couples, merge completely. I know we’ve talked about it, but do either of you have any reservations?”
Lane seemed excited but looked at Bryan to gauge his reaction.
Bryan seemed calm and in his deep, gravelly voice said, “I’m ready if you sissies are.”
Smiling, Ken said, “Okay, B, start the magic, and hold onto your hats guys.”
Brad said, “Everybody join hands. Touching makes it even better.”
Merging with Ken first, the two men relaxed, sinking into each other.
The room became quiet, and Bryan and Lane looked at their buddies, watching them intently.
Brad said, “Lane, you and Bry merge next. You’ve already done this between the two of you, so go there and give yourselves a minute.”
Brad and Ken noted the change in their countenance, becoming still and peaceful, almost serene. Their love and devotion for one another calmed them as they wrapped their minds together, sinking into the shared intimacy. The depth of love between their buddies became tangible, and unshielded, it emanated from them like a beacon. Ken and Brad were surprised it was so perceptible, but they had never been around anyone else connected in that way, and Brad wondered if he and Ken radiated the same feeling.
Bryan’s deep voice, smiling in their minds, thought: You do. You two fuckers are hot together when you do this, and that’s what made us want to try it.
Brad: Alright, guys, here we go.
Unlike the first time he and Ken merged when he had no idea what he was doing, Brad gently brought the four of them together.
As expected, it was both harsh and beautiful. Lane and Bryan shared a beautiful soul. Bryan’s deep-seated strength of character became evident, and for such a big, gruff-looking man, he was full of love and compassion for his friends. Of all the team, he was the quietest, shyest, and by far the most gentle. Lane was more whimsical, full of laughter and music, his mind creative, filtering everything through that part of him. As different as they were, he and Bryan seemed made for one another, their minds complementing each other perfectly.
One of the biggest shocks to Ken and Brad was how much smarter Bryan was than he let on. He was a quiet, observant man, and contemplative, rarely sharing his thoughts, not wanting to impose his opinion unwanted or unasked on anyone else. However, it often hurt Bryan when he wanted to express his ideas, but people overlooked him, thinking him dumb or that his opinion didn’t matter. In Bryan’s memories, Ken found himself guilty of unintentionally treating his friend that way, never realizing the hurt he inflicted.
Transgressions existed between all of them; apologies and forgiveness followed, and the bonds between them grew. The strength of love between them as brothers was equally as powerful and profound as the love they shared with their partners; the tears of joy just as hot, the devotion, support, and loyalty equally strong. The intimacy was excruciating, but at the same time, none of them wanted it to end. The acceptance between them, with no judgment, was intoxicatingly liberating in a way they couldn’t have imagined even a short time ago. The merge took mere seconds, and Brad brought them back out, still together but not as deeply. Their handsome faces smiled with tears on their cheeks as their eyes opened, each making comments under their breath.
Ken mumbled, “Holy shit, guys.”
Lane said, “You two are beautiful.”
Bryan smiled, giving everyone a mental hug and squeezing Lane’s and Ken’s hands tighter.
Brad said, “That was so much more than I was prepared for. You two are incredible.”
It took a while to come down from the emotional high they just experienced.
Looking at Bryan with fresh tears, Ken stood and moved behind him. Getting on his knees, he wrapped his arms around Bryan, hugging him for nearly a minute, his face buried against Bryan’s neck. Reaching behind him, Bryan pulled Ken closer, letting his buddy know in his gentle way that all was forgiven and good between them. Ken’s other arm reached out, inviting Lane and Brad into the mix, and on top of the comfort it brought between them, it allowed them the extra time needed to recover. Their nearly naked bodies squeezed together, the warmth and comfort of their skin matched the emotional closeness. Their friendships took on new depth and meaning, and none of them wanted to let go.
Brad, ever the practical one, finally said, “I’m starving, let’s get dinner started!” and reluctantly, they separated.
None of them knew it, but the bonds they built that day would only get stronger and carry them through trials and tribulations for eternity.
<><>
Remaining linked the rest of the evening, their friendship, knowledge, and awareness of each other deepened even further. If anyone happened to see them, it would seem strange to see the four men moving about the house and backyard, not saying anything, but occasionally laughing or exchanging facial expressions or gestures.
Bryan took charge of the grill and the rest of the food, while Ken put two cases of beer on ice in their large cooler, so they didn’t have to keep going back into the house.
Too warm to use the fire pit, they lit bug candles and sat by the pool, drinking and ruminating over the changes in their lives, sharing thoughts and expressions of what they just experienced together, and relishing the closeness and sense of freedom it brought. As they sat down to eat, a touch of apprehension came from Bryan.
Putting a hand on Bryan’s big shoulder, Lane asked: Bry, what’s the matter?
Bryan’s mental voice sounded hesitant, almost timid: I’d like to ask you guys something.
Ken responded: Bryan, buddy, after everythin’ we just shared, you know there’s nothin’ you can’t ask.
Lane stood, moving behind his partner, and wrapped his arms around Bryan’s shoulders and upper chest in a hug. Pulling Bryan against him, he kissed the top of his head.
Bry, what’s up? You’re in the safest place in the world.
Would you guys mind if we said grace? After today… all this reminds me how much I have to be thankful for, for Lane being in my life and for you two sissy fuckers. The rest of the guys, too. I wish they were here.
Bryan’s sense of family with Ken and Brad and the rest of the guys was powerful. Growing up without one, Lane and his buddies filled a hole in him he never knew was there, and even though he didn’t express it outwardly, that part of him was now exposed and evident after their merge, and they understood his request.
Ken smiled, thinking: That’s a great idea.
Out loud, Ken asked, “Do you wanna start, or do you want me to?”
“I’ll do it… Let’s hold hands.”
Bryan gripped Ken and Lane firmly, and Lane and Ken did the same to Brad.
“I only know the Lord’s Prayer. I remember it from when I was a boy.”
“That’s perfect.”
Taking a deep breath, their minds touching, they closed their eyes and lowered their heads, saying the words together, “Our Father, who art in Heaven….”
Their voices, inner and outer, spoke in unison, expressing thankfulness for their lives together and love for their partners, the doctor, and their absent brothers.
As the prayer came to an end, a light mental breeze brushed over their minds. Brad felt it more than the others, but each thought it was tied to the emotions running through them. None of them could yet see the towering robed figure of a man, crouched in the den looking at them. A cowl covered most of his face leaving only a strong, square chin exposed.
“Amen.”
Beneath the cowl, the corners of his mouth lifted in an almost imperceptible smile of approval, and he vanished.
The four men remained silent another moment, and when they opened their eyes, Bryan smiled, and said, “Thanks, guys. Let’s dig in, I’m starving.”
<><>
After cleaning up from dinner, while sitting by the pool to relax, Lane pulled out his guitar and started tuning it. Something was different, and it took Brad a few minutes to realize that when Lane closed his eyes and struck a chord, he not only heard it but felt it in his mind.
“Lane? I’m not sure if you’re aware of it, but I can hear that in my head. Actually, I feel it.”
“Really? I didn’t realize I was doing that. I’ll learn to put a cap on it.”
“No, let it go; I like it.”
Lane played for an hour, taking requests or singing his favorite songs, accompanied by Bryan if he knew the words. Lane’s voice filled their minds and linked as they were, shared his love of music and the emotions playing invoked in him. Bryan was used to it, his pride in Lane’s talent evident, but the new sensation enthralled Ken and Brad, revealing another facet of their friend that made him unique to them.
Finally, Lane said, “I have one more, and then we probably need to hit the road. I’ve been building what I call my ‘Bryan List.’ It’s songs I find where the lyrics mean something special to me and how I feel about my man here.”
Bryan turned red and with a sheepish grin, asked, “You aren’t going to embarrass me, are you, Little Buddy? You got me worried.”
Laughing, Lane said, “Big guy, if me loving you embarrasses you, then I’m putting you on high alert because you are about to turn red as a beet. I’ve got quite a few of these in my head, but I want to use them on special occasions. It’s no secret how we feel about each other, especially after today, so why not express it, and what better place than with our best friends?”
Closing his eyes, Lane went quiet a few seconds before starting to play ‘Time in a Bottle’ by Jim Croce.
He played the song once with no words, and with the first chord, something in them stirred. An intense look covered his face as his affections for Bryan permeated the music, washing over and through them, stirring emotions. He took them outside themselves, lifting their souls up and out, carrying them with him.
The second time through, he sang the lyrics, and by the end of the song, not only was Bryan beet red, but tears unashamedly covered his cheeks. Brad and Ken had tears in their eyes as well. With one arm around Brad, Ken reached out and gripped Bryan’s shoulder, giving him an affectionate squeeze and affirming there was no need for embarrassment. The openness and honesty of Lane’s sharing jarred them, but it was the same beautiful sting as merging, and they didn’t want it to end.
When his guitar fell silent, a voice from the shadows by the gate, dripping contempt, said, “Pathetic.”
Neither Bryan nor Ken heard the gate open or the chirp of the alarm system from the motion detectors, and they started in surprise. A well-dressed man in a black suit stood just inside the gate, in the shadows next to the house. A fedora pulled low on his brow made it difficult to see his eyes, and something about him made everyone uneasy.
Ken asked, “Sir, can I help you? This is a private party, and I think you have the wrong house.”
“I know exactly where I am and who you are, Captain Habersham, or should I say, Captain Dutcher. I must say you look very young and fit for a man of your age. All of you do. It’s most unnatural.”
Lane’s emotional sensitivity, still hyped from the song and where it took him, gave him a bad feeling about the man. Whoever he was, Lane knew he didn’t have their best interests at heart. Unobtrusively, Lane reached for his phone, ready to call the doctor in case they needed help.
“I’m afraid you will find you have no signal at the moment, Lane Weaver. Besides, the doctor won’t be able to help you.”
Brad spoke up, not liking the man’s tone or the fact he knew who they were.
“Who are you?”
“No need to worry that handsome face of yours, Brad Wilson. Who I am is not important; who I represent is. You and the other ‘test subjects’ are abominations, and interference with our plans will not be tolerated. I am here to warn you… stay out of our business, or you will be very, very sorry.”
Ken heard enough and moved towards the man, intending to escort him through the gate and off their property, but as soon as he got close, the man made a backhanded motion, sending Ken flying back like he had been struck by a powerful blow. Bryan caught Ken midair, or he would have gone straight into the pool.
Brad shouted, “Ken!”
“Foolish, but expected. I am beyond any of you.”
Brad’s concern for Ken flooded the link as he thought: Are you alright?
I’m fine B. He caught me off guard, but it won’t happen again. He hits like a girl.
Ken hold back. Lane, Link with Bryan, then merge with me. I’m going to need your help.
Lane and Bryan joined with him, adding their strength to his as their minds came together, available to draw upon. Intense anger coming from Bryan surprised them, and glancing over Ken noted him breathing heavily with a steely, dangerous look in his eyes. As gentle as he was, one of the few things Bryan would not tolerate was a friend or loved one being hurt or threatened. With what the man did to Ken, coupled with his sudden appearance, Brad’s unconscious mind put the clues together over what was happening.
Glaring at the stranger, Brad said, “That was a cheap shot, and it’s not going to work again. You’re going to leave, NOW, and you aren’t coming back.”
Brad’s defiance angered the man, and under the rim of the fedora, his eyes turned white.
“You have no idea who you are dealing with.”
Raising his hands, a ring of fire erupted from the ground encircling the four men. The sudden, intense heat burned their bare skin, and within seconds the flames thickened, growing higher and forming a wall around them, blocking their view of him.
Ready, Brad hoped he was right about what was happening because if he was wrong, someone was about to get seriously hurt. Stretching out his palm, his face calm and focused, Ken, Lane, and Bryan felt a wave of power come from him, and the wall of fire vanished!
Relieved his intuition proved right, Brad smirked and said, “Yeah, I thought so, you bastard. My turn.”
Ken, Bryan, and Lane gave no outward sign when Brad drew from them, but Brad noted their surprise and concern at what was happening, and he sent them a quick thought: Don’t worry, guys, let me handle this and I’ll explain in a few. Lane, get ready to back me up if I need it.
Brad’s eyes turned white, and a strong gust of wind came out of nowhere, blowing the fedora off the stranger’s head. Lightning followed, flashing across the sky, lighting up the backyard. Thunder rumbled ominously, shaking the house, and Brad turned his face skyward. A bolt of lightning, thick and powerful, struck the ground in front of the man, blowing him off his feet against the wall of the house. The crack of thunder was deafening, making their ears ring. Ken and Bryan, with their enhanced senses, felt the air crackling with electricity and the extreme change in barometric pressure.
Ken, Bryan, and Lane looked at Brad with wide eyes, wondering what was going on.
Picking himself up, his clothes smoking, the man radiated anger.
“You will pay for your insolence!”
“Yeah, whatever, douchebag. In case there was any doubt, I didn’t miss. Consider that a warning shot. The next one will hit, and will be a lot harder and more powerful. Wherever your body is, I don’t think it would appreciate that. Now get out of here. Go back and tell whoever you work for we hear your message, and tell them to fuck off.”
Just for theatrics, Brad produced another crack of thunder overhead, startling the man. He glared at them with hate-filled eyes, making eye contact with each of them. They had seen hate during their time in Syria running missions, but what they saw in his eyes was something deeper. It wasn’t just hate, it was evil, and sent a chill down their spines.
Brad held a shield over their minds and felt the cold touch of his evil when he reached for them. The shield flared even brighter when Lane backed him up, and with a frustrated grunt, the stranger straightened his jacket and vanished.
Silence followed for a few seconds, and then Lane blurted out, “Brad?! How did you do that?”
Brad replied, “None of this is real. We’re in a construct. I’m not sure when he pulled us in. He’s strong and very smooth, but I figured out what was going on. Get ready, I can get us out of here, but it might sting a bit.”
Drawing further from Lane, and this time Ken and Bryan, the backyard shattered like a mirror, and after a second of disorientation, they were sitting where they were moments before, Lane with his guitar in his lap.
Looking at Brad, Ken said, “Fuck me, Brad, I’m so hot for you right now. You’re amazin’! How the hell did you figure out what was happenin’?”
“As soon as he hit you without touching you, I knew it couldn’t be real. That, and his sudden appearance without setting the motion sensors off. It was a chance, but it felt right. No one can throw my man around like that in the real world, so it had to be an illusion. I think we caught him by surprise, and he didn’t expect us to be as far along as we are. I don’t want to think about meeting him again until we’ve had time to brush up on our skills.”
“You are exactly right, Brad.”
Spinning around again, another man stood inside the gate. Ken and Bryan moved forward, taking up defensive stances in front of Lane and Brad, but the man held up his hands in a placating gesture.
“No need for that, my friends. I’m not with Them. I’m on your side, or hope to be. My name is Albrecht.”
Sounding frustrated, Ken asked, “Is there a convention here no one told me about?”
Irritated and on edge after what they just experienced, Brad said, “Look, I don’t know who you are, but you need to leave.”
“If you wish me to leave, I most certainly will, but I think we should talk first. It would be a shame to waste this opportunity. I must say, Brad, that was most impressive for what little training you’ve had so far. Very well done.”
Something about Albrecht’s voice jogged Ken’s memory, and he could swear he had heard his voice before.
“B, wait. I think I know him.”
“Ah, so you recognize me? I wasn’t sure if you would. We’ve met before Ken. Some months ago, I was in your mind, although you were in a coma at the time. It was at the laboratory, during your recovery after your encounter with that nasty, vile creature.”
Brad’s stomach knotted briefly at the mention of the creature that almost killed him and Ken, and he asked, “How do you know about that?”
“I was with you that night. Unable to see Aaron, I left him a note. I cannot break his trust by revealing everything that happened that night, other than I was present for a short time. Similar to that encounter, our Enemy has once again overstepped the rules, allowing me to intervene. I would not say this is fortunate, except it allows me to speak with you directly for a short time. I would have helped you tonight, but you didn’t seem to need it.”
Ken’s eyes went wide when he realized who the man was.
“Oh my God, B, guys, this is the doc’s partner.”
The revelation of who Albrecht was stunned them, and Brad, remembering their conversation with the doctor about how much he missed his lover, asked, “Can you see the doctor? Now? Tonight? Can we get him here?”
Albrecht’s eyes betrayed his emotions, closing tight, and a pained expression crossed his face.
“No, Brad, but thank you for asking. Aaron and I have some time yet before we can be together again. We are not permitted to make contact with one another.”
Pissed off from the night's events and not understanding everything that was going on, Brad let his anger go.
“Fuck that! You won’t make contact, I will.”
His eyes turning white, Brad shouted for the doctor in his mind.
Doc!
Bradford?! What is wrong? Why are you contacting me this way?
Doc, I need you to trust me. Link with me now …please.
Bradford, I do not understand…
Doc, please!
Concentrating, Brad formed a construct of the lab in his mind, and the doctor appeared, looking irritated.
“Doc, I’m sorry, but there isn’t a lot of time. I’ll be right back.”
Before the doctor could ask him what was going on, Brad disappeared as he opened his eyes to look at Albrecht.
“Albrecht, can you please link with me? Just on the surface. I know you have things I’m not supposed to see or know about, but this is important.”
“I’m unsure…”
Reaching out, Brad gave Albrecht a gentle, mental tug. He doubted he could force Albrecht into a link if he wasn’t willing. Time wasn’t on their side, and Brad felt it had to be now, or it wasn’t going to happen.
“Please, Albrecht, trust me.”
Albrecht relented, entering Brad’s mind. Just like the doctor, Albrecht’s presence was strong and gentle, carrying the same intense loneliness and sorrow. He and Albrecht appeared in front of the doctor, and the two men stared in shock at one another, not knowing what to say.
Neither of them was prepared for it. It had been nearly a hundred years since they stood face to face, or mind to mind, and they were caught off-guard by the suddenness of it.
Smiling, Brad said, “I’ll give you two some privacy.”
Brad opened his eyes to see Ken, Lane, and Bryan staring at him, and Ken said, “B, I sure hope you know what you’re doin’.”
“They deserve this, Ken. I don’t care about some archaic, old-school penance keeping them apart. I think this is a technicality, but if there’s any fallout, I’m willing to take the blame. I don’t want them in trouble.”
Standing behind Brad, Ken pulled him back in a hug, saying, “B, you continue ‘ta amaze me. I love you.”
Bryan spoke up, his eyes still wide after everything that just happened.
“We need to come over here more often. It’s boring at our place.”
<><>
Everyone sat, quiet and subdued, pondering events of the evening. Ken moved Albrecht into the house and put him on the couch, and it wasn’t long before Brad felt the doctor and Albrecht leave his construct.
As Albrecht opened his eyes, Brad knelt beside him, asking, “Sir, are you alright?”
“I’m more than alright, Brad.”
Gripping Brad’s proffered hand, Albrecht sat up with tears in his eyes, squeezing Brad’s hands in gratitude.
“Thank you for that. You should not have done it, and I hope there are no repercussions to any of you. I do not think there will be. Technically my superiors have no authority over you at this time. I still don’t know if there will be for Aaron and myself, but if so, I will face them.”
Sounding concerned, Ken asked, “Is the doc okay? Should we head to the lab?”
“He is well, Ken; however, I think he would appreciate solitude for the moment.”
Brad asked, “So how is it you’re able to talk to us now? You said that guy overstepped his bounds? It’s time we know more about what’s going on.”
“I wish I could answer your questions more clearly, Brad, but I cannot disclose too much information. To put it simply, I belong to a group known as The Order. We face The Enemy, and you met one of their agents tonight. Rules govern our fight, and the man tonight overstepped himself by attacking you directly, allowing me to step in as a measure of balance. If he had not done that, I would not be able to converse with you.”
“What are we involved in?”
“I’m afraid Aaron must answer your questions. The time I had to spend with you was taken up by my visit with Aaron, and I must depart. I have said all I can for the moment, although there is one thing I wish to leave you with. Tell Aaron of this, and he will know what to do when the time is right.”
Raising his hands to the center of his chest, Albrecht put his forefingers and thumbs together, forming a diamond. To their amazement, a small ball of light appeared between his hands, floating gently in the air and giving off a warm, pleasant glow. Holding out his palm, the ball followed his hand. His brow furrowed in concentration, and it split into four smaller orbs, each bobbing over in front of them and hovering inches from their foreheads.
“Do not be afraid.”
The lights entered their foreheads with a sense of warmth and comfort, causing their eyes to widen. Albrecht lowered his hands as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.
“I cannot thank you enough for what you did for Aaron and me tonight. It was dangerous, and there still might be consequences.”
Brad took a deep breath, clearly not understanding what just happened.
“I’m more than willing to pay that price, Sir, if there is one. I don’t understand everything yet, and may not for a while, but my gut tells me you don’t deserve whatever is keeping you apart.”
“Unfortunately, Brad, that is not for you or me to decide. Rest assured, I will be close at hand. Given The Enemy’s boldness tonight, we must assume they will attack again. Although you surprised them tonight, do not count on it again. Aaron must accelerate your training to maintain your safety.”
“We’ll see him tomorrow morning, Sir.”
Preparing to leave, Albrecht gripped each of their forearms, saying, “Until we meet again.”
They didn’t notice him leave, but suddenly he was gone from the room.
Looking at one another, none of them knew what to say or how to react.
Lane gave a wistful sigh and said, “Damn. I feel like we got a visit from Emperor Palpatine and Obi-Wan on the same night.”
<><>
After gathering his guitar Lane and Bryan left for home, and a few minutes later Ken and Brad sat on the couch in the den. Leaning forward, Brad rubbed his face in his hands, looking tired.
Ken scooted back, saying, “Hey B, stretch out and put your head in my lap.”
Brad did as Ken instructed, and a contented sigh escaped him when Ken’s hands ran through his hair, lightly rubbing his forehead and temples.
“You’re amazin’, B. I know I’ve said it a lot lately, but you were badass tonight. I’m proud of you.”
“I just wish I knew what the hell I was doing, or what’s going on. I want to know who these guys are, and what we’re caught up in.”
Ken continued his ministrations, extending his touch lower to include Brad’s chest.
Brad moaned, relaxing from Ken’s touch and said, “Fuck, your hands feel good.”
Inhaling deeply, Brad took in Ken’s strong aroma, a mixture of his natural scent, chlorine, and sweat. Brad closed his eyes with a lazy smile as Ken’s warm hands soothed him, lulling him into a state of relaxed tranquility.
Brad was so comfortable he didn’t want to move, content to let Ken touch him, however, and wherever he wanted. After a while, Ken pulled him up, hugging their bodies together and encircling Brad with his legs, nestling his chin over Brad’s shoulder so their cheeks touched.
Brad pulled their minds together so they could be intimate on both levels, and the love, support, admiration, and comfort in one another blended with the physical sensations, turning both of them on even more.
Ken whispered in Brad’s ear, “Fuck, B, I love you so much. I know I keep sayin’ it, but I can’t help myself.”
Nibbling Brad’s ear and neck, Ken's touch changed from soothing to sensual. They separated only long enough for Brad to remove their trunks and then resumed their positions. Ken literally wrapped Brad in his arms and legs, starting a passionate kiss that had them both breathing hard before it was over. Ken wasn’t lying when he said he was hot for Brad after the events of the night. Adrenaline from their encounter with the well-dressed man, plus their natural affections for one another took over, and they made love for nearly an hour.
With Ken’s first release, strength flooded into Brad, and with no need to hold back, everything escalated. By the time they were sated, drenched in sweat, their bodies were tight and muscles swollen like after an intense workout. They lay together for a while, kissing and touching, enjoying the post-orgasmic pleasure before taking a quick shower and crawling into bed, spooning, and falling into a contented sleep.

Over the next week, Brad and Ken designed an entirely new training program for the team. With input from the doctor, Brad outlined a series of mental disciplines intended to sharpen their abilities, strengthen them, and use them in combat, either singly or as a group.
As couples their abilities were enhanced when they were together, bringing the realization the doctor’s mandate about traveling alone wasn’t only for physical protection. Ken was stronger when Brad was around and vice versa, a side effect they hadn’t noticed before, hardly ever being apart.
Bill, Loy, and Darren made excellent progress, rapidly closing the gap between themselves, Brad, and Lane. It became apparent they shared a core group of abilities, like telepathy. All of them could create basic constructs, but none came close to Brad on size or complexity. All of them could heal, but none as well as Lane. Brad felt sure that over time each of them would find their niche as they practiced and grew stronger.
By the end of the month, all of them had merged with one another as couples and as a group, and as Brad predicted, it changed every aspect of their lives and abilities. Thriving in the time spent together, their friendships, already tight, deepened to an entirely new level. Their love for one another as brothers and men became a haven and sanctuary against the brokenness of the world.
<><><>
Surprise and curiosity hit after receiving an email from the doctor, setting a mandatory meeting for Saturday morning at 1000. He gave no reason for the meeting, but asked them to fast, which really made them wonder what it could be about.
Being retired military, their work ethic exemplary and ingrained for life, everyone arrived early. The mood was light-hearted, with all the guys joking around and hanging shit on one another as they waited for the meeting to start, but as soon as the doctor entered the room, they instantly quieted and became attentive.
For a moment he stood at the lectern, silently making eye contact with each of them, noting how handsome they were, how perfect. He helped with that to some extent, but he also selected them carefully based on their DNA, and only improved on what they already were.He stayed quiet long enough to cause questioning looks between some of the men, wondering what was going on, but finally, squaring his shoulders and gripping the lectern, he broke the silence.
“It has been a long road, my sons, and some years since we started this journey together. I do call you my sons, for you are every bit as dear to me as if you were my own, and I owe you an apology. I have not lied to you, and never will, but there is much you still do not know or understand.
“Recent events have accelerated matters far sooner than I intended. I wanted you to have years of peace and growth before being thrust into what we now face. Your lives are just beginning, and it is always a father’s wish for his sons not to grow up too quickly.”
Hanging his head, his shoulders slumping, he paused to collect his thoughts.
With a heavy sigh, he continued, “But, that is not to be.
“Nearly twenty years ago I selected you for the program, already exemplary soldiers, the best of the best, and willing to sacrifice your lives for your country. Because of that, I was perhaps, presumptuous. You see, my reasons for selecting you, in reality, were for a much higher purpose.
“Even though you stopped physically aging with the first changes, you have grown and matured into amazing men, surpassing my wildest hopes and dreams, and I am so very proud of you.
“However, after you hear what I am about to tell you, if you wish to leave, I will understand. I have learned in my own life, decisions and actions have consequences, but I can help mitigate yours if you choose to leave.”
The room remained deathly silent, with every eye on the doctor, looking at him intently and wondering what he could possibly say that would cause any of them to break from the team and abandon what they now shared.
“If you choose to stay, we will embark on a further journey, one that you cannot walk away from.”
He paused again to let the importance of what he was about to say sink in.
“On the night Kenneth forced his confrontation with the creature, I told him I was not permitted to be present. We have never discussed this, and up to this point there has been no need. I do report to a higher authority, and it is now time to divulge the truth behind my intentions in bringing you to this point.
“A war exists few on earth are aware of; a war over the fate of mankind. I serve, and am dedicated to, one side of this War. I belong to an ancient Brotherhood known as The Order, and if you choose to stay, you will as well.”
“For thousands of years, our purpose has been to protect mankind and his free will. Our Enemy, which you recently encountered, wishes to control and subjugate humankind to their own ends. The conflict has spanned countless ages, and through history, one or the other of us has held a dominant position. Currently, The Order is in a precarious state, and for the last century has been on the verge of utter destruction.”
“I recruited you to save The Order, and thereby save mankind, from a horrible fate. There are not many of us left, and our leadership remains hidden. It is my hope you will make the difference, bring us back from the brink of destruction, and become a beacon to rally around, thus turning the tide against The Enemy.”
“I understand this must come as a shock, and the burden, if you stay, will be immense. The abilities you are beginning to experience are merely the start of a new path if you wish to continue. It will be dangerous, and some, or all of us, may not survive. It is a noble cause, but I cannot ask anyone to go blindly down such a path without their knowledge or consent.
“I asked you to fast out of tradition; to help clear your minds and focus on making such an important decision. It helps to be empty so you can listen to the voice of our Creator and find the answer within you.
“This decision, either way, will change your lives forever. I do not wish you to make your choice lightly, and you may take all the time you need to think it over, but if any of you choose to leave, I will reverse the effects of the program, and reinsert you into society with a normal life, with no memory of the last twenty years.”
The doctor fell silent, looking at their faces for some type of reaction. Brad was about to reply but felt through their link that Ken wanted to respond. Ken had always been their leader, and Brad thought it best he be the spokesperson.
Ken stood and said, “Sir, I can’t speak for everyone, but I can’t imagine not movin’ forward with you on this. What we are, what you’ve helped us ‘ta become, and what we’re meant ‘ta be… it seems a bit overwhelmin’, but I can’t think of a more noble reason ‘ta exist and follow this path you’ve set us on.”
Glancing around the room at his buddies, he continued.
“I’ve known, and I think all of us have known deep down, that we’ve been waitin’ for somethin’; some higher purpose. Livin’ and workin’ at the security firm has been nice, but recently I’ve sensed a lack of direction, and aside from you, Brad, and these yahoos, my life has felt a bit stale. I think we’ve all felt this comin’, but didn’t realize what it was ‘til now.
“I understand if anyone wants ‘ta back out. There is, and will be, no shame. If any of you decide ‘ta leave, I want you ‘ta know how much of an honor it’s been to know and serve with you.”
All eyes were on Ken as he scanned the room, making eye contact with each of the men he called brothers. He didn’t need to be linked with them to know their answer. He had been their Captain in the Navy, and after merging with them, he knew them as well as he knew himself.
Brad stood, putting a hand on Ken’s shoulder and closing his eyes, pulling everyone together. He didn’t bother creating a construct of the conference room, he just wanted everyone to be together and open, so no one could hide their feelings.
Neither Ken nor Brad were surprised by what they saw. Unflinchingly, each man was one hundred percent on board and behind the doctor. Ever since abandoning the Navy and faking their deaths, something had been missing. The security firm was a poor substitute, and they felt drawn to the doctor’s revelation as if fighting The Enemy was what they were meant for all along.
Grinning, Brad asked the doctor, “Doc, would you care to join us?”
Smoothly, the doctor entered their link, his love and support surrounding them.
I cannot tell you how pleased I am you all wish to continue. I am so proud of you. I thought perhaps you were meant for this; however, our Creator works in mysterious ways, and we must never forget that the free will we strive to protect in humans also applies to us as their protectors. Nothing is pre-determined, and I could not be absolutely sure; however, I have hoped and dreamed of this moment for many years. Tomorrow I will begin the last and final phase of your development, and you will come into your heritage.
The doctor gently removed himself from the link, and everyone else followed suit. When Brad opened his eyes, he gave Ken’s shoulder an affectionate squeeze.
As everyone started to get up, Ken said, “Since we’re all committed to movin’ forward with this, I have somethin’ I need ‘ta bring up.”
A few of the guys let out exaggerated groans as they sat back down, bringing a smile to Ken’s face.
“Alright, ladies, that’s enough.”
Again, all eyes focused on Ken. Looking at him, Brad loved it when Ken took on the role as their leader. He was so well suited for it; he didn’t play the part, he was the part, and everyone would follow him wherever their new path took them.
“Thanks to the doc, we’re all financially comfortable. The security firm served a purpose, but I think it’s time we let it go. We don’t need the money, and it will only be a distraction movin’ forward. I’d like ‘ta take good care of Sally; we could never have done it without her. Does anyone have any objections?”
Once Ken brought it up, they knew what he said was true. The company served as a stopgap, a band-aid to cover an itch until they could move on to their actual purpose. No one shook their head.
“Alright. Dar, I’ll need your help ‘ta get things rollin’.”
Darren piped up, “You bet, boss.”
Darren was the financial guru of the group aside from the doctor, and kept the books for the company along with Sally’s help.
“Okay, ladies, I can hear your stomachs. Let’s all head out for food. I’m starvin’!”
Even with the rumbling of empty stomachs, everybody hung out for nearly an hour before breaking up. Most of the guys went out to eat together, but Ken, Brad, Bryan, and Lane still needed to work out, so they grabbed some protein bars and sports drinks from the kitchen to tide them over.
After an hour and a half of heavy exertion, their shirtless bodies were fully pumped and coated in sweat. As they were toweling off to head to the showers, the doctor wandered into the gym, motioning them to come over.
“I am glad you are still here. There is something I wish to try.”
Once gathered around him, the doctor continued, “As you know, in the past, I required a post workout exam of the physical partner. There were many reasons for this, the most important being to keep the body adjusted through continuing physical changes. That will continue, but after tomorrow will not be as crucial. There will be a new exercise Bradford, Lane, and the other mentalists must practice, which the physical partners will facilitate.
“Please remove the rest of your clothing. Bradford, you and Lane sit on the mat with your legs crossed, shoulders out, and backs straight. Kenneth, please kneel behind Bradford, and Bryan, behind Lane.
“What I want you to attempt will be easier after tomorrow, but I wish to see how well you perform today, before the procedure. This will give me an indication of how tomorrow will proceed.”
The four men stripped and assumed their positions per the doctor’s instructions.
“There are three points in our bodies central to the flow of energies we produce. You are familiar by now with the concept of the program based on the body, mind, and spirit. So far, you have gone through the first two stages as partners of the body and mind. Kenneth and Bradford correctly surmised that your spirits, or more appropriately, your souls, are shared between you.”
Brad interrupted, “So doc, do we each only have half a soul?”
Chuckling, the doctor replied, “No, Bradford. You each have two halves, half your own and half your partners. That is why the love between you is so strong.”
“How could you have possibly done that, sir? No disrespect intended, but even for you that’s a stretch!”
“I will be happy to explain it one day when we have a few months of uninterrupted time.”
Wide-eyed at his response, the guys didn’t know if he was joking or not.
“To continue, you have reached the point where you can merge and blend your minds and bodies, but there is one aspect still unavailable to you. Tomorrow’s procedure will allow your souls to merge as well, and bring about the third and final transformation.”
Their eyes widened even more, and their jaws dropped at his revelation.
“I will elucidate more fully later, but I want to explain the basic concept to help with this exercise.
“Initially, it will be helpful to touch these points, to identify them and feel the energy flow. After tomorrow, with practice, you will not need to do this. The purpose of this exercise is to determine these points, feel the energy streams in both of you, and make sure they are flowing freely and healthily. These energy flows have been, and will be, the source of your abilities, although you have been unaware of them until now.
“We will begin at the forehead, representing the mind. Kenneth and Bryan, place your hands, one atop the other, on their forehead, gently but firmly. Concentrate, and with your enhanced tactile sense you should feel warmth at that spot.
“Bradford and Lane, rather than focus tightly as you have in the past, keep your minds open and remain calm. Empty yourself of all active thoughts, visualizing only the spot on your forehead being touched. I want you to feel the flow of energy in your own body, and if you can, in your partners through their touch, emanating from that spot.”
Exhaling, Brad emptied his mind. Ken’s touch calmed him, and in this case, it was clinical, not sexual, which helped him to focus. The mentalists learned early on how to relax and let their minds drift by not focusing on anything. It was a difficult lesson, but once mastered, became an essential part of their discipline. After a few minutes of being still and breathing steadily, small bursts of a beautiful shade of blue appeared in the darkness behind his eyes. Instinctively, he chased the bursts, but they eluded him.
In a quiet voice, the doctor said, “Do not chase it. Breathe and relax.”
Over the next few moments, Brad determined how to let his mental ‘peripheral vision’ sense the bursts. Once he got the hang of it, his mind filled with the color, and the spot on his forehead under Ken’s hands tingled. Moving in a pattern, the color flowed from his forehead into Ken’s hands. Through their link, Ken’s reaction was apparent, and they both smiled.
Excellent, Bradford. Link with Lane so he can see and feel what you are experiencing.
Joining the link, Lane explored Brad’s approach, immediately grasping the concept, and within seconds his mind filled with the same brilliant shade of blue.
Under his breath, Lane said, “Whoah!” his delight apparent through the link.
Opening his eyes, Bryan quietly exclaimed, “Lane, you’re glowing! We all are!”
The doctor said, “Yes, it is quite beautiful, is it not? You see this through your mind’s eye. If you shift your perception solely to the physical realm, it is not visible. If the energy levels are extremely high, an ordinary person might perceive a slight glow, but with their minds closed, they will not see what you are seeing.”
“Now relax and continue. Feel the energy as it passes through you, into your partner, and back to you. Think of it as a circuit between you and become acquainted and comfortable with it so it will be easier to sense the next time.”
The doctor gave them a few moments before continuing.
“Now, Kenneth and Bryan move your hand to the middle of their chest. This center represents the heart, or metaphorically, the soul, and is the center we will open tomorrow.”
Ken and Bryan moved their hands down, but this time, while Brad sensed something, he couldn’t reach it. Trying harder, he discerned a few tiny spots of a warm, golden yellow, but it was inconsistent and he couldn’t grasp it.
“Do not be frustrated. The fact that you can perceive this spot at all is more than I expected. I am encouraged, and it bodes well for tomorrow’s results.”
“You are all doing excellent. Kenneth and Bryan, for this exercise, moving forward, you will keep them focused five minutes at each location. Today there is no need since we are simply exploring and discovering. Now move your hands down to the lower abdominal region, just below the navel.”
Brad and Lane found the spot quickly this time, and their minds filled with a brilliant, deep red, almost the color of blood, and within seconds, they became aroused.
“This center represents the body. Do not be alarmed or ashamed at your reaction. This energy center represents, among other aspects, the core of your physical needs and strength as men. In the future, I’m sure you will find many interesting ways to experiment with this knowledge.”
Brad became acutely aware of Ken pressed against him, in particular, his erection. Through the link, he was cognizant of the same thing in Lane and Bryan and started to withdraw, not wanting to intrude, but Lane stopped him.
It’s okay, Brad. There are no secrets between us anymore, and we’re all big boys here.
Glancing at their hard-on’s, he smirked.
No pun intended!
Even the doctor chuckled before he continued, saying, “Now, attempt to focus on all three centers at once.”
In his mind’s eye, Brad visualized the three centers, fully perceiving the two that were already open and aware of the third. Controlling the flows between himself and Ken, he followed the circuit between them. The sensation was incredible, completely unlike merging, but still intensely intimate, like a passionate kiss.
Smiling, Ken said, “That feels strange. Amazin’, but strange.”
Bryan said, “It’s beautiful.”
“You have done remarkably well. All of this will be easier after tomorrow, and far more potent. I will explain then what the purpose of this exercise is, and its importance to you both.”
With a barely discernible smirk, he said, “Now, eat, go home… and have fun.”
<><><>
On the drive home, Ken either kept his hand on Brad’s thigh or held his hand. The aftereffects of the doctor’s test were strong, and they were extremely horny. Despite their excitement, they were ravenous and picked up food, eating in the car on the way home.
Upon entering the kitchen, Ken punched in his code, securing the house. Before the sound of the seals finished, Ken grabbed Brad by his shoulders, turned him around, and brought him into a tight hug and passionate kiss. Brad was ready, his arms going around Ken’s shoulders in response, hugging him back as their tongues began a fierce battle.
Breaking apart only long enough to pull their shirts off, they headed to the bedroom. Ken initiated their physical bond to maximize their pleasure, and now aware of it, the crimson energy between them was visible.
Controlling the flow, Brad expanded it, encapsulating and saturating their bodies in it. Their muscles swelled in response, and a light sheen of sweat popped out across their skin. The heat between them was intoxicating. Their urgent need for each other kept it from being a tender bout of lovemaking, and what followed was a frenetic coupling that didn’t take long.
After they finished, breathing heavy and recovering, still cuddling, they both let out a “Fuck me!” making them laugh.
Ken’s hot breath filled Brad’s ear as he whispered, “Damn B, just when I think it can’t get any better...”
Brad smiled, holding him tighter and saying, “I know, Ken. We’re the luckiest men in the world.”
After a while, Brad lifted himself up, putting his arms on either side of Ken’s head and gazing into his eyes with a hungry expression on his face.
Grinning, Ken said, “Oh-oh… I think someone’s about to play mad doctor.”
Raising his eyebrows, Brad said with his sexiest smile, “You have no idea, mister.”
“Should I be scared?”
“Never… At least I don’t think so.”
<><>
Brad continued gazing intently into Ken’s eyes as he sat up and moved to the middle of the bed.
Patting the spot in front of him, he said, “Move over here.”
Ken did as he was told, and Brad drank in the sight of his lover. They were both still excited and sweaty, and Brad moved closer, so their chests and thighs touched with their erections trapped between them, pressed together. Instead of hugging like normal, Brad leaned forward, so their foreheads touched.
“Put your arms around me and hold us together. I want our foreheads, chests, and stomachs touching.”
“B, what’re you doin’?”
“Just go with me. It might take a minute, so be patient. Close your eyes and relax.”
Relaxing into Ken’s solid, warm embrace, Brad breathed deep and slowly exhaled, clearing his mind, his single focus on where their foreheads touched. It didn’t take long to find the energy, and a small flare went off in their mind’s eye as brilliant blue energy flowed between them.
With the physical bond active their core was already open, and Brad elevated the flow between them, strengthening their arousal even more. Increasing and matching the two streams, colored lightning arced between them, accompanied by a low-frequency hum, not in their ears but in their minds.
Unexpectedly, Brad plunged them deeper together than he ever had, and unprepared for the intensity of emotion, his action took Ken’s breath away. Brad anchored him, holding him tight with his arms and mind.
Hold me, Ken, with your body and mind, as tightly as you can.
Based on the doctor's explanation, he and Ken each had half their own soul and half of the other's within them. He sensed the connection earlier in the day, but couldn’t reach it, but this time, with he and Ken more fully immersed in one another than ever, Brad reached for it again.
Again, he was aware of it but unable to reach it. He continued, struggling harder, pushing with all his strength, their bodies tense and sweating with the strain of his effort. Ken’s arms tightened around him, supporting him and lending him strength.
They belonged together. Their souls belonged together. He and Ken believed that with every iota of their being, and with that assertion, Brad reached for the spot with every ounce of his will. As he pushed, blue and red energies swirled around them, causing a hot wind to blow their hair, soothing their sweaty skin and emphasizing their naked awareness of each other.
There! Finally, so small he barely caught it, a tiny ribbon of yellow arced between their Hearts, adding to and completing the flows between them.
<>
A silent explosion of blue, yellow, and red flows danced between them, blending into white so bright it consumed their bodies. To Ken, when their minds merged, the closeness was overwhelming. Sharing the absolute and utter truth with someone about who you are and who they are to you is unbelievably intense and intimate, and once over the shock, immensely liberating.
With the addition of their souls they were truly one, complete on every level simultaneously, and the experience entirely new. Now, they knew what it was to be the other person, to be in their body, and feel the naked skin of the other person against them, not just the sensation and memory, but their existence.
Barely able to talk, Ken rasped, “Oh my God, B. I know what it’s like ‘ta be you. I know what you feel when I touch you, not just the sensation, but the emotion, the connection between us. I knew it before from mergin’, but now I understand it on a whole new level.”
Their eyes still closed, foreheads and bodies pressed together, they smiled, their hands tightening where they gripped one another. Controlling the energy flows one by one, Brad enhanced one while diminishing the other two, learning the difference and purpose of each.
Ken’s Mind expanded in the same manner as Brad receiving a physical charge from their lovemaking. He didn’t try anything, not wanting to interfere with Brad’s control, but he monitored and observed everything, understanding it in a manner he had never been able to before. Aware of Brad’s pleasure at his realization, the last small piece, the tiniest bit of inequality between them, shattered, never to return.
Continuing on the path he started, Brad lessened the blue and yellow flows, moving on to the last one, their core.
“Get ready, Ken!”
In their mind’s eye, red fire erupted between them, and they were both unprepared for the wave of pleasure that gripped them.
Shouting, “FUCK!”, both men were taken over by a forceful, powerful orgasm.
Shocked by the sudden intense pleasure, Brad lost control, grabbing hold of Ken and hanging on for dear life as contractions overtook him. Ken moved his arms down and around his lover, holding them together, squeezing Brad so hard it took his breath away, feeling the emotional rush his touch elicited in Brad by being ‘that guy.’
As their senses returned to a less heightened state, tears covered their faces. His mind racing, Brad tried to take in the ramifications of what just happened. His body shook as he tried to process everything, having a hard time wrapping his mind around the fact that after tomorrow’s procedure what he and Ken felt would be even stronger.
Ken lowered them to the bed with Brad underneath, his body still trembling. Clinging to Ken with desperate strength, Brad didn’t want to let go, needing an anchor to keep him grounded; his mind and soul didn’t want to return to his body, wanting to stay in Ken forever.
Knowing it would help Brad focus, Ken rested his full weight on Brad. With his mind still open and their souls one, Ken knew what Brad felt. He felt it too. It was hard for him to return to himself after experiencing such a profound, intimate, and loving bond with his soulmate. The connection was like a drug, and the thought of separating was painful, even naked and pressed together as intimately as they were. Wanting Brad to hear it from his own mouth, with his own breath, Ken whispered in Brad’s ear.
“It’s okay B. I’m havin’ a hard time with this too. I could stay in you forever until we both die of starvation. I didn’t know humans could have anythin’ like this. I don’t think we’re entirely human anymore, but I know we’re closer than ever, and I hope ‘ta God we live together forever. I don’t think either one of us could make it alone anymore. I need you so bad it hurts like I never knew it could hurt, and I know you feel the same way. Not only do I know it, I feel it like you’re a part of me. Just when I think I can’t love you any more Brad, somethin’ like this blows me away.”
Brad still couldn’t talk, but hearing Ken’s words, feeling the vibrations of his deep voice through his chest, the weight of his body, and his hot breath in his ear soothed Brad’s racing mind and emotions. Hugging Ken tighter, he nuzzled his face in the crux of Ken’s thick neck and shoulder, and they stayed that way for almost an hour, holding each other, caressing each other, wide awake and loving each other; being each other.
Brad fell asleep first, safe and protected, wrapped in Ken’s arms. Ken stayed awake most of the night, content to feel Brad against him, and watch him sleep. Occasionally he teared up, overcome with love for the man in his arms. No matter what tomorrow brought, Ken knew as long as they were together, they could face anything. Finally, leaning down, he kissed Brad’s forehead and drifted off for a few hours’ sleep.

Each of the five couples slept that night, unaware of a tall robed figure crouched at the foot of their beds. Even if they had been awake, they could not see them. After tomorrow, the nephilim were unsure if they could remain veiled to these men, and would have to be more careful about revealing themselves.
The cowled figures kept still, focused and intent on the sleeping men, discussing in their minds the events about to unfold.
Tomorrow will be difficult. The full strength of The Enemy will come down upon them, and unawakened, they will have no chance.
The Enemy is desperate to keep them from attaining their heritage. We must protect them, whatever the cost. Balance is no longer an issue.
We have never been instructed to intervene in such a manner.
Agreed. But times have never been this dark. The Order must survive.
It frightens me, what they will become. Once they reach their full potential, they could destroy us.
That day is too far ahead to see, and the path unclear. We must trust that as unbound and unfettered as they are, they will make the right choices. They love as we cannot. That must make a difference.
Their voices fell silent as the nephilim continued their vigil over the sleeping men, waiting for tomorrow and the final changes the doctor had planned.
