The Feast

One master. A hall of slaves below. A carved screen he watches through. Water scours them out, oil opens them, stone stretches them wider. One boy's hand betrays him against the tiles, and the punishment makes him come a second time. Behind the screen, the master's own body stops obeying.

The Baths

I

The corridor is narrow and warm and mine.

Stone on both sides, raw, unplastered, the villa's skeleton exposed where the decorative surfaces end and the architecture of watching begins. The air thickens as I climb. Heat rising from below, carrying the smell of herbed water and olive oil and something underneath both: the mineral tang of wet stone, the faint animal note of many bodies packed into a warm enclosed space. The stairs are steep and my boy's bare feet pad softly behind me, the sound so light it could be my own echo returning from the walls, a smaller, softer version of my step sent back to follow me.

I do not hurry. The watching is better when the bath has already begun, when the slaves have settled into their rituals and the performance has softened and the preparation has stripped away the last pretense. I have learned this as I learned everything about desire: by arriving too early once, by seeing the slaves stiffen at the sound of the upper door, by watching them arrange their faces and their limbs into the shapes they thought I wanted, and by finding those shapes boring.

The alcove opens at the top of the stairs. A stone bench, cushioned with a folded linen, set before the screen. I settle onto it. The stone holds the bath's heat from below, rising through the floor, through the cushion, into my thighs. It is the first proof that I am close to them without being among them, that I am separated by a screen and a storey and the entire architecture of ownership from the flesh my father's household keeps and I am free to use.

My boy kneels. The knees find the linen he lays down for them and settle into the floor beneath it. His mouth finds my thigh. His hands rest on my calves. His head tilts, the cheek against the fabric of my tunic, and his breath, faintly sweet from the honeyed wine I gave him an hour ago, passes through the cloth and finds my skin. He does not fidget. He does not press. He oiled and opened himself before we left the lower rooms because that is what he is kept ready for, and having done it he has nothing further to want.

I do not use him. It is not time.

His devotion is absolute. Small, smooth, the frame narrow and perpetually ready, the cock half-hard at rest, the mouth parting at the slightest downward pressure on his skull. He does not love me. The word is too heavy for the dark, total worship of an animal that has been fed from one hand long enough that the hand has become the world. I manage his aching as I manage the bath's heat: keeping it at a simmer, denying the boil until it suits me. I value him as I would a cup that fits my palm exactly: the shape is perfect, the temperature never changes, and I do not think about it.

My fingers curl into his hair. The hair is soft, washed and oiled this morning, the curls carrying a faint trace of rosemary. My fingers find the shape they have held since long before I learned to count the holding, a rider's hand reaching for the reins without looking.

The screen in front of me is a carved panel that separates the upper passage from the hall below. The lattice is geometric: interlocking circles and squares cut into stone a hand's width thick, the apertures narrow enough that no eye looking up from the bath floor could resolve a face behind them, wide enough that every body below arrives at my eye in slices: a shoulder cut in half by a bar, a thigh framed in a circle, a hand emerging from one aperture and disappearing into the next. A body in pieces is a puzzle the eye assembles, and the assembling is the first act of possession.

I look through the screen.

The bath opens below like a world seen through water.

The hall is wide, high-ceilinged, the walls tiled to shoulder height and bare stone above, all of it sweating with condensation that catches the light from the clerestory windows, the last of the afternoon sun filtering through high narrow openings, diffused by the steam into a luminous haze that makes the air itself glow. The floor is wet stone, grooved with drainage channels that feed into a central basin. Along the walls, benches. Above the benches, iron hooks holding the instruments of preparation: clay pitchers, oil dishes, and the graduated phalluses, carved from stone and polished wood, arranged by size from something no wider than a finger to something that makes the newer slaves glance away.

I know this room. I have watched from this screen a hundred times, and the hundred times have taught me the rhythms: the three stages of preparation, the choreography of slaves cleaning and opening and readying themselves for the evening's use. I know which slaves are new and which are veterans. I know which bodies carry their arousal like a secret and which wear it openly, the cocks thickening during the fingering, the discipline of not coming playing across their faces like weather across a landscape. I know what I am looking for. I am not always sure I will find it.

What I am looking for is the involuntary signal.

The slaves have not heard me arrive. The upper door is heavy, the corridor long, and the hall below keeps up its own noise, water in the channels, the echo doing what echo does in a stone room, so that anything ordinary from up here dissolves before it reaches them. Most of it. The channels do not run steady, and I have learned where the gaps fall. The lattice is dark from below, the carved pattern too dense to read, the alcove behind it a shadow that might hold a face or might hold nothing. They know the screen exists. They know that someone, my father, a handler, the overseer, might be watching at any moment. Nothing in the posture changes. What changes is under it, an awareness that tightens the skin and lifts the chin and makes even the most routine act of preparation carry a faint charge.

II

The first stage is water.

The slaves squat over the drainage channels, a row of male bodies, naked, the skin still carrying the day's labor in the dust on their shoulders and the tension in their backs. Clay pitchers filled from the heated cistern. The first goes over the head and the shoulders, and the dust comes off them in grey runnels and finds the grooves in the floor. The second is for the inside. The water is warm, herb-infused, and the slaves pour it into themselves with a communal unhidden efficiency, so many repetitions behind it that the act no longer registers as intimate. They squat. They pour. The water enters and exits. The drainage channels carry the runoff toward the central basin, the water running cloudy at first, then clear.

Nothing in this is arranged for me. I watch all of it.

At the cistern one of them says something that does not reach me, and the shape of it is a complaint. The senior bath slave crosses to him, broad through the shoulders, thick through the neck, and puts two fingers into the stream. His voice comes up through the floor whole where the other man's did not, pitched to carry over water, the way a man learns to pitch it after twenty years in a room like this.

"Cooler. A hand of cold."

The handler works the tap. Nobody thanks him. He goes back down the row with his hands behind him, looking into the business of each body as it squats, and the row straightens where he passes and loosens again behind him.

A body squatting over a drain with the water running back out of it is stripped of every pretense. There is no way to make this beautiful. No angle of the hips, no arrangement of the face turns the douching into display. I read them for quality, for texture, for the detail that sets this one apart from every other. A grimace at the water's temperature tells me the slave is newer, the nerve endings still calibrated to surprise. A blank face tells me the routine has absorbed the sensation entirely.

One of them cannot make it ordinary. He squats at the end of the row with his eyes on the drain between his feet, pale, freckled across both shoulders, and the flush comes up his neck and into his ears with nowhere to hide on skin like that, and when the water runs back out of him he shuts his eyes. Nobody in the room is watching him. He does not know that yet.

The twins.

I notice them as the eye notices a doubled image, the brain snagging on the repetition before the conscious mind identifies what has been repeated. Two identical bodies squatting beside each other, arriving to me in pieces through the carved stone: a shoulder in one circle, the same shoulder again in the next, flaxen hair matted with steam, the muscle defined from field labor, the jaw the same square jaw doubled. They are beautiful with the closed beauty of symmetry, a thing confirmed by its own reflection, each brother the proof that the other is real.

One fills the pitcher for the other. The gesture is small: a hand reaching across, tipping the clay rim to pour warm water into his brother's body. The intimacy of it registers in my groin before it registers in my mind. My cock stirs. Not from the act itself, which is clinical, functional, two men performing the same maintenance they perform every evening. The stirring is from the ease. The casual tenderness between two brothers who share a face, the unselfconsciousness of a hand that knows another body as well as it knows its own because the other body is its own, the mirror-twin, the womb-mate.

My fingers rest in my boy's hair. I do not move them. Not yet. Below me his knee comes off the linen a finger's width, hunts for something the floor does not have, and settles back onto the same spot. Nothing else in him moves. My eyes are on the twins.

The veteran douches at the far end of the row. His cock hangs heavy between his thighs, half-interested even now, the resting state of a man so accustomed to arousal that arousal has become his baseline temperature. Above it the frame is still massive. The shoulders carry decades of quarry muscle, and the scarring across the back and flanks reads as an autobiography: hard labor first, then an endurance that made him too valuable to waste on stone. He was brought indoors not for his beauty, but for his capacity to survive being used. He squats and gets it done. Two pitchers, no wasted motion, the face registering nothing at all. The water runs clear on the second pour, the interior maintained with grim precision, as clean as the instrument it has become. He has absorbed desire into his metabolism like salt, permanent, ambient, indistinguishable from the blood.

My gaze passes over him. Priced long ago. Nothing. I move on.

III

The slaves move to the benches and the oil.

The light is shifting. The clerestory windows darken as the sun descends and the bath hall's grey luminescence gives way to the deeper gold of oil lamps. A handler moves from bracket to bracket with a taper. Each flame catches and steadies. The shadows deepen and sharpen and the wet stone floor begins to gleam with reflected amber. The steam thins. The air is still warm but visible now, the bodies emerging from the haze into clarity, the oil on flesh catching the new light and holding it.

They pair off. Nobody is oiled by his own hand here. One lies face-down on the bench while the other works his back, his thighs, his cleft, and then puts fingers into the opening. The work is functional: the olive oil is warmed in clay dishes over small braziers set into the bench-ends, infused with herbs that carry a sharp green note through the steam, and the slaves spread it methodically, the practiced motion of maintenance. The hands move efficiently. The muscles are kneaded. And then the hand reaches the cleft, and the function and the eroticism begin their coexistence in the same gesture, the same hand that oiled a shoulder blade now pressing between the cheeks, one finger sliding in, testing the give, the stretch, the readiness, and the touch is clinical but the body is not. Cocks fill against the benches. Breathing changes. The line between preparation and arousal is the line I am watching.

The twins.

One lies on the bench. The other oils him with hands that have washed this body since before memory, since the shared water of their mother's belly. It shows in the pressure: the exact weight of the palm where the neck runs into the shoulder, the angle of the thumb in the groove beside the spine, the patience of a touch repeated so many times it has become a form of breathing.

The oiling twin's fingers reach the cleft. They pause. A half-second pause, and my own breath goes tight with it. Then the fingers slide in. One. Two. The prone twin's hips tilt. Not away. Into. The motion is small, barely visible, a fractional rocking of the pelvis that presses the cock harder against the stone bench, and the cock swells, the shaft thickening beneath him, and the pressure of it drives a flush from his lower back up through his ribs. The oiling twin adds a third, working it deeper. His own cock lifts unattended, pointing at his brother's hip like a finger pointing at a secret, and a thin clear thread hangs from the tip of it, catching the lamplight in one aperture and gone in the next, and I have to wait for him to move again to see it.

His free hand drops to his own cock and closes around it, hard enough to whiten the knuckles. It is not working. I watch him lose the argument by degrees and feel my own arousal sharpen. My hand moves from my boy's hair to his shoulder and pushes, and my other hand pulls the tunic up off my thighs. He knows the sequence. He turns on his knees to take me at the angle I prefer, hips back, spine dipped, and his mouth finds my cock with the familiar ease of a mouth that has opened around this shape ten thousand times, the lips parting, the tongue finding the underside, the warmth enclosing me, steady, unthinking, worn to habit. I press his head down. He takes me deeper, the throat opening, the lungs finding a new rhythm around the obstruction. He does not hurry it. My attention never leaves the bench below.

My free hand travels the length of him, down the dipped spine, and finds the cleft. The opening is warm and already slack. Two fingers go in without resistance and without ceremony. He is a fit I stopped noticing years ago. He takes them. He does not push back. His hips stay where I set them, and the only thing in him that moves without permission is the muscle closing around my knuckles, once, and again, on a rhythm nobody taught him. His cock is stiff and ignored beneath him. I add a third finger absently, the mind on the twins, the twins' fingers, the twins' cocks, the twin whose hips shifted into his brother's hand.

Across the bath, the one who could not make the drain ordinary is being fingered by an older bath-mate. His face is turned toward the lattice screen. He cannot see through it. The carved pattern is too dense, the alcove too dark behind the stone. But his eyes search the shadow anyway. He knows he might be watched. The erection strains upward from his hips with a rigidity that has nothing to do with the fingers inside him and everything to do with the screen, the shadow, the possibility. I note this. File it. He is harder for the shadow than for the hand. A thing worth remembering. A body worth requesting.

And then, because I want to see it work, I wait for a lull in the water and shift my weight. The linen compresses and the bench answers under it, a small dry sound, the kind a building makes and forgets.

Below, the hall changes. Not everywhere and not at once. A head comes up near the cistern and goes back down. The newer slave's eyes drop to the tile, fast, and his mouth opens and does not close. Three benches down, someone stroking himself stops, and then starts again slower, for whoever might be there. Nobody looks up now. Looking up would be an admission.

One sound. That is all it costs.

My boy has not moved on me through any of it. He swallows around the shaft and the swallow stops halfway and holds there, because a swallow makes a sound and he has learned which sounds are his to make up here. He finishes it when the water comes back.

The half-wall that separates the male bath from the female preparation area stops well below my sightline, and over the top of it the lattice gives me a slice of the girl. A female handler kneels in front of her, working with a flat, methodical patience, and the pauses in the work come at regular intervals, the way a count comes. The girl's mouth is a hard line and her chin shines where two tracks have run down to meet at it, and I do not need the rest of the face to read it. She makes no sound. Her toes curl against the tile and do not uncurl. The face holds. The feet do not. The handler's expression never changes. Professional. The face of a woman performing necessary maintenance on a body she will not use. I register it. The signal is there and it is real and it is on the wrong body. My attention returns to the male bath. The girl is not what I came for.

IV

The phalluses come down from the hooks.

The slaves know their sizes. The veterans reach without hesitation, finding the correct hook by muscle memory, the fingers closing around carved stone or polished wood familiar from long use. The newer slaves hesitate at the middle range. The eyes measure. The hand hovers between one size and the next, and the calculation is visible on the face: too small and the preparation is insufficient, too large and the pain defeats the purpose. One of them hovers too long and the senior slave says a number at him from across the hall, and the water drops into a gap and the number arrives at me clean.

"Fourth hook."

He takes the size he is told to take instead of the one his hand was reaching for. The phalluses are oiled from the communal dishes and worked in slowly, the slaves kneeling or lying on the benches, faces set in concentration, the bodies adjusting to the stretch, practiced, patient.

Cocks that were half-hard during the fingering are now fully erect, the shafts rigid, leaking, wet at the tip where the training says they must not finish. Several slaves stroke themselves lightly, the hand on the cock not driving toward completion but managing the sensation, holding it at a level a man can sustain without tipping. How close can I bring myself. How long can I hold the line. It makes their faces beautiful. A jaw comes unhooked and stays that way. Someone's eyes go past the wall he is looking at. The flush arrives late and all at once, across the chest and up the neck.

The twins sit facing each other on the bench. Legs interleaved, the knees touching, the thighs bracketing each other's hips, the position so close that it reads as an argument against every boundary the world has drawn between them. Each works a phallus into the other. The position requires proximity: the arm reaching past the brother's hip, the hand guiding the stone between the cheeks, the wrist working the angle while the face is close enough to feel the brother's breath. And the breath is fast. And the faces are mirrors. Each twin watches his own expression played back to him on his brother's face, the jaw going slack, the eyes narrowing, the lips parting, and neither of them is choosing it.

The phalluses are the same size. The rhythm synchronizes without either of them deciding to, the push and the withdrawal landing at the same moment, the same small sound leaving both of them at the same depth. The screen cuts them into pieces and hands me the pieces out of order: a wrist in one circle, a mouth in the square above it, a belly, a belly. I assemble them. It takes nothing. They are the same picture twice. Both cocks stand, pointing at each other across the narrow space between their bellies, leaking onto each other's thighs. One twin's hand leaves the phallus and finds his brother's cock. He does not stroke it. The fingers close around the shaft and hold, warm and still, and the held twin's eyes shut and his hips rock forward into the hand and backward onto the phallus at once, and the motion is so fluid, so unguarded, that I press my palm flat against the stone beside me and find it has gone slick under my hand.

My fingers curl deeper into my boy. He takes it, the cock in his mouth sliding to the throat, the gag producing tears I do not see because my eyes are on the twins. My cock has come up, fully, the blood-thick heaviness that means I am approaching something. Not the edge. The edge is still ahead. This is the approach, the slow accumulation of tells, and the blood keeps the count. My hips press down into the bench. My boy holds his position. Both his hands stay where he put them, one flat on my thigh, one on the cushion, and his own cock juts untouched and leaking a thread onto the linen between his knees, and he does not reach for it. Nobody has told him he may. His breath changes around me. Once. He puts it back where it was. I know exactly what it would take and how little. I have never once spent it.

The veteran takes the largest phallus from the hooks, the carved stone piece, dark with oil from years of use, the surface polished smooth by a thousand passages. He works it in with two slow, unhurried pushes. No grimace. No catching of breath. His face holds the expression of a man settling into a warm bath: comfort, recognition, the body opening around a familiar shape, the muscles remembering the dimensions and adjusting without being asked. His cock is swollen, just present, an erection no longer distinguishing aroused from not-aroused because the distinction has been absorbed into a deeper state, a permanent low hum of readiness that is not anticipation but climate. He rocks the phallus slowly. He is not preparing. He has nowhere to be except here, in a sensation old and deep and good, the thousandth repetition of a pleasure that has not dulled but settled.

I watch him longer than he is worth and feel something I do not follow to its name. Something closer to recognition.

Then he is done with it. He draws the stone out, rinses it in the pitcher at his knee, and hangs it back on its hook, where it swings once and stills.

V

The preparation is nearly complete.

The slaves are oiled, stretched, clean, the flesh humming, the cocks still hard, the phalluses removed and returned to the hooks or held in place for the final minutes of stretching. The lamps are burning full. The bath hall glows amber, the wet floor catching the light and throwing it back, and the air is thick with oil and sweat and the musk of many aroused male bodies shut into one room, a smell that is not one smell but a chord.

Near the far wall, a cluster of younger slaves sit on the benches and wait, done with the phalluses and not done with what the phalluses started. Some stroke lazily, more reflex than intention, the fingers keeping the cock just short of going soft, like a musician holding tension in a string between performances. Some have stopped touching themselves entirely. The discipline holds, a low buzz accepted and ignored like the hum of insects on a warm night. They murmur to each other, and a piece of it gets past the water, one voice under another.

"...still walking funny."

A snort of laughter, killed fast. The rest of it goes back under the water. They share a function and a condition, and in the sharing they have found something like fellowship.

The newer slave is apart from the group.

He leans against the tiled wall, his cock in his hand. The screen gives him to me in three pieces and no more: a freckled forearm working in one square, a throat in the circle above it, and between them a bar of stone where his chest should be. I lean until the pieces line up. The one from the drain. He is not edging. He is losing. The strokes are faster than discipline allows. His hips push forward into the fist. His lips part. His breathing shallows. His free hand splays against the wall behind him and whitens. His head tips back against the tile and his eyes come up to the dark of the screen and stay there.

Heads turn. A bath-mate hisses at him across two benches. "Hey." And then, when nothing changes, lower and faster: "They'll take you for it."

But the boy at the wall does not slow. The hand has crossed the threshold where the mind's commands cannot reach the fist. The other slaves watch someone break a rule they have all wanted to break. Somewhere behind him a pitcher is set down too carefully, and nobody picks it up again.

I am completely still. My hand has stopped inside my boy. My hips have stopped pressing into his mouth. The breath is caught somewhere under my ribs and I am not spending it. The boy at the wall cannot see me and he is looking anyway. He has stopped performing. He has stopped managing. He cannot stop his own hand. This is what I climb the stairs for.

The boy at the wall comes.

His body arches off the wall, the spine curving, the hips driving forward, the cock pulsing in his fist, and the sound he makes is small, strangled, a thing escaping through a gap that tried to close around it. The seed hits the wet floor in thick ropes, the white catching the amber lamplight. The channels drop and the hall drops with them, and what comes up to me in the gap is his breathing, torn open, going on too long after the rest of him has stopped. He shudders. His knees buckle. And then the aftermath. Whatever was in his face drains out of it. He opens his eyes. Looks down at what is on the floor. Looks around at the other slaves, who look away, who suddenly find the benches and the hooks and their own hands intensely interesting, the collective performance of not-seeing that is the slave's version of solidarity.

The senior bath slave moves in, the one who took a hand of cold off the cistern.

The role straddles discipline and care. The hands that scrub a back also deliver the slap, and the voice that called the water down will call this too. The posture carries both, an authority and a proximity that make the other slaves flinch and lean toward him at the same time. He does not speak. He takes the boy at the wall by the shoulder, spins him into the tile, and delivers the spanking: three hard, flat slaps to the ass, the palm landing full across both cheeks. The sound cracks across the bath hall. Heads duck. Shoulders tighten. The impact travels through the air as a dropped weight travels through water.

The boy does not flinch.

The boy's face, pressed against the tile, reaches me in profile through one of the circles, and splits into a smile. A lusty smile, the lips curving with a pleasure that is worse than defiance because defiance can be beaten from a slave but this is something else: flesh that has learned to metabolize punishment as sensation. The boy's spent cock, still slick, twitches where it lies. The senior slave sees the smile. His own cock, hard against his thigh, is a debt the boy will pay later, in some corner of the household the screen does not reach.

The senior slave reaches for the largest phallus on the hooks. The one the veteran hung back a few minutes ago, the dark stone piece, still warm from him, massive, the head wider than a fist, the shaft graduated and ending well past what most of this room has ever taken. He oils it with a single pass of the palm. "You wanted it," he says, to nobody, in the voice he uses to call the water temperature. The boy sees it over his shoulder and the smile dies.

"Please. Don't. Not that one. I can't."

The words are genuine. The boy is spent, still trembling from the orgasm, the nerve endings raw, the hole already stretched from the earlier preparation but not for this, not for the one the veterans use, the phallus that takes years of conditioning and a man who has learned to surrender past the point where surrender has a name.

The senior slave presses the stone head against the boy's hole and pushes.

The boy's back arches, the spine bowing under more than it agreed to. "No. Please. It's too much." His hands claw the tile. The fingers drag across the wet surface and find no purchase. His face does two things: it takes the stone, and then, half a second later, it takes the warmth. The senior slave pushes deeper. The phallus is enormous. The boy's hole stretches wide, the muscle yielding in increments, and each increment brings a sound from his throat that is less a word than a syllable of something the flesh is inventing as it goes.

And then the shift.

The boy's clawing hands go flat against the wall. His hole, stretched around the dark stone, pulses. Something has been let through that is not quite pain and not quite pleasure but the border they share. His spent cock stiffens, impossibly, the blood returning in a rush that jerks his hips forward. It happens fast enough to hurt him. The protest was the last thing his discipline had left, and it is spent now. His jaw drops. His eyes, clenched shut a moment ago, open. Wide. Unfocused. They come up off the tile and find the screen. The moan that leaves him is deeper than the strangled sound of the stolen orgasm. Longer. Pulled from below the lungs, below the belly, below the bones.

The sight breaks me.

All of it at once, the wide-stretched hole, the spine arching, the face going from protest into something past language, hits me the way a struck note finds the one glass in the room that answers it. It has no exit and no end, and the endlessness is the most honest thing I have ever watched through this screen. I press my boy's head down, the full length of my cock sinking into his throat, his nose against my belly, the throat closing and opening and closing around the shaft, and I come.

The orgasm is not controlled.

My jaw drops. A sound gets out. Small. Private. I did not authorize it. My hips thrust upward into my boy's mouth and I did not authorize that either, doing what the boy against the wall did and is doing again now under the stone. For one pulse, two, three, I am not the man behind the screen. I am on the other side of it. I cannot stop. Nothing in me is asking my permission. The seed spills into my boy's throat and he swallows it down without being told, flawlessly, the way he does everything.

In the receding wave, in the hollow that follows the release, something arrives that I have no use for. My hands are cold. My hands are never cold in this room.

The boy against the wall stole his orgasm. What went onto the floor was forbidden, unwilled, messy. And now, pinned to the tile, he is being flooded with a second wave he did not choose. Both taken. Neither offered.

Mine went into a throat that opened for it because that is what the throat is kept for. The seed is in my boy's stomach and he is licking me clean, thorough, unhurried, the tongue tracing the shaft with the dark attention of a mouth finishing the last part of a task. I would trade it. And under it, smaller and worse: the one at the wall was in front of me at the drains, close enough to count the freckles on his shoulders, and I wrote him down as a temperature.

My fingers withdraw from my boy. And there, bigger than the breath was, something in him breaks position. A sound, barely a sound, the front end of a word he has no permission to finish. He shuts it down inside a heartbeat and puts his hands back where they were. I heard it. He knows I heard it.

"Not tonight," I say. It is the first time this evening I have needed my voice.

He does not answer. He is not permitted to. His hands press flatter where he has put them back and his shoulders come down. His cock is still straining, unclaimed, and it will stay that way, and he will be aching for the rest of the evening, and the aching is a leash I hold without touching.

VI

The bath empties.

Handlers enter, brisk, efficient, calling names or numbers in the flat voices of men who manage bodies like stewards counting inventory. The slaves stand, file toward the door, their bodies gleaming, stretched, prepared. They move opened and oiled, slightly loose, slightly careful, walking the way a man walks when he is carrying something he has been told not to spill.

The newer slave. The senior slave draws the stone out of him and leaves it on the bench, and the boy's hole stays open behind it, a dark ring that closes by degrees and does not finish closing. A handler approaches. The boy's face tightens, anticipating further consequence, what he left on the floor already noticed, already catalogued in whatever ledger the household keeps of transgressions and their costs. But the handler only jerks his head toward the door. Move. The boy moves. I watch him walk out and note the walk, slightly unsteady, the legs carrying the aftershock, the shoulders rounded with the posture of flesh taken apart and reassembled in a configuration it does not yet recognize as its own. I filed him once tonight already, before I knew what he was. I will ask for him, and not to punish him. I want to be close enough to smell it the next time his body goes over to the other side without asking him first.

The twins leave together, shoulders touching, the stride the same stride doubled, their arousal banked and still visible in the heaviness of their cocks. At the next event there will be a body between them that is neither twin nor mirror, and one of them will have to choose which way to turn.

The veteran is last. He lifts the large piece from the bench where the senior slave left it, wet still, the stone that punished one man minutes after it pleasured another, and oils it, and replaces it on the hook. A mindless ritual, the hands caring for the instruments of their own preparation. He walks out with the heavy, unhurried tread of decades on these floors. I watch the scarred back until the doorway takes it, and then I keep watching the doorway.

I sit on the bench with my boy's head resting on my thigh, his breath warm and steady against my skin, the devoted animal at rest. The hall below is wet floor and thinning steam and the last amber light of the lamps and the faint smell of seed and oil and herbed water, the perfume of a room where bodies have been prepared and have left.

My hand returns to my boy's hair. Strokes once. He pushes into the hand, blind and trusting.

I stand. My boy follows. We leave the alcove. The upper corridor is cool, the stone walls releasing the day's heat into the night air, the temperature dropping as we descend the stairs, the bath's warmth coming off my skin one stair at a time.

Below, the floor cools. What was spilled on it dries. The steam thins to nothing. The baths wait for tomorrow's bodies.

The Banya (Historical, Bathhouse & Saunas, Voyeurism). A young serf, stripped in the steam of his master's banya, taught what his body is for by every man in the room.

The Meridian Grand (Dystopian, Inspection, Milking). A hotel staffed and stocked with conditioned flesh, where members gather to watch each new intake graded, milked, and priced.
