Once Upon a Time

This story is a little different from the ones I usually write, it has a slightly darker tone and may not have the happy ending you have come to expect from me. I have always been a bit of a history buff and started to think about a gay man in a different time. Liam White will be our time traveler for this tale. Once Upon a Time…

Chapter 1

August 10, 1872

My name is Liam White, I am a high school math teacher. I live with my boyfriend, Tony Malone, we have been together for about 5 years now. Tony works as a CPA for a large firm. We met in college, hit it off right away and as soon as we graduated, we moved in together. We both found our dream jobs and our life together was going great, we were even talking about getting married. About a month ago, things took a strange turn. I started to get headaches, followed by a strange dream, or hallucination, or vision, I’m not sure what you would really call it. It would start with a headache, then I would see a bright flash of light and I was suddenly in another place and time. I never know where I am going or what I am doing, and I just sit and stare without moving for anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. We have an appointment with some doctors set up for next week to try and figure out what is going on.

The first time it happened I was in my classroom with my 10th grade Algebra students, and the bell rang.

I said, “ok, for your homework tonight, work on those problems in chapter 8. If you are having any problems and want extra help, I am free for the next period, you can stop in any time.”

After a few moans and groans, my students all filed out the door to their next class. I cleaned today’s problems off the white board and sat at my desk to start grading today’s homework. I felt a slight pain in my forehead and pulled a bottle of aspirin out of my desk drawer. Before I could swallow them, the pain became unbearable, and I saw a bright flash of light.

I was riding my horse next to Tommy James, we had been riding all day, leading the two horses that we had stolen about 24 hours earlier.

I took odd jobs sweeping floors in a general store for some food, helping a blacksmith shoe some horses for a dollar, I even helped a farmer hoe his corn for a meal and a place to sleep for one night. I had gone two days with nothing to eat as I got near Mason City. I was camped just outside of town and was trying to find something to eat, I hunted for a rabbit or squirrel for about an hour, I wasn’t having any luck. I came upon a farm and saw a few chickens running around the yard. I decided the farmer probably wouldn’t miss just one chicken, so I snuck behind a tree and waited for one to walk near me. I was watching the chickens so close that I didn’t notice the farmer come out of the barn. I grabbed a chicken as it came by and took off running, I heard a gunshot and he yelled for me to “git my ass back here.” I froze in my tracks with a shot gun pointed at me.

He held me there until the sheriff arrived and took me to jail. The sheriff said, “a week in lock up will cure you of stealing, boy.”

At least I had a place to sleep and got fed every day, so it wasn’t too bad. Tommy had been arrested the same day. We had pretty similar stories, we were just trying to find work so we could eat. The sheriff unlocked our cell and said, “all right you two, time to git out of here. I am going to walk you to the livery stable to git your horses and you are gonna ride out of town. I never want to see your faces here again, and don’t steal anything on your way down the road neither.”

We both nodded, “yes sir.”

The man at the stable opened the gate and we led our horses to the road. The sheriff stood there and watched us ride until we were out of sight.

Tommy looked over his shoulder and pulled off the road and got off his horse.

I asked, “what’cha doing? The sheriff said to git out of town.”

Tommy scratched his chin, “yeah, I know, but what are we gonna do?”

I shrugged, “I guess ride to the next town, see if we can find work.”

I got off my horse and stood next to him, I could tell he was thinking. I asked, “what’s goin through that head of yours?”

He turned to me, “you see all those horses at the livery stable?”

I nodded, “yep, they supply all the cowboys that drive cattle to market.”

He grinned, “yep, I bet they won’t miss a couple of them, if they just happen to walk away.”

“What you gittin at Tommy?” I asked.

He tied his horse to a tree, “we just wait here till dark, and grab a couple horses and go to the next town and sell ‘em there.”

I thought for a while, horses sold anywhere from 20 to 40 dollars apiece. We hid in the trees for the rest of the day and waited for dark. We snuck back to town and were able to get two horses free and rode the rest of the night in the moonlight to get as far away as we could. We had a good 6-to-8-hour head start before anyone knew the horses were gone. We stayed off all the main roads and found wooded areas to hide in and slept during the day. Two days later we came to the next town, we hid our horses in the trees just outside of town and took the stolen horses to the livery stable. We gave the stable owner a hard luck story that we needed some money and we had to sell our horses so we could eat. They always felt sorry for us and were quick to buy the horses, we would go to the local diner and eat then sneak back out to our horses.

We would then repeat the whole thing over in each town as we worked our way across northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas. Hell, I think we sold the same horses two or three times. We were careful to never go back to any of the towns that we had already been to. Since we didn’t spend much time in each town, no one ever suspected that we were horse thieves.

The sun was starting to come up, so we found a spot to stop to get some rest. We tied the four horses to a tree and fell asleep for a few hours. When we woke up, Tommy stood and looked around, he walked up to the top of a small hill.

He said, “there is a pond right here, we better give the horses a drink of water.”

We led the horses to the pond and let them drink, we tied them to a tree near the pond. The sun was getting pretty hot. I dipped my hand in the pond and splashed my face, the cool water felt good on my hot skin.

I said, “the water feels good, how about a swim?”

Tommy grinned, “that’s a good idea.” He started to pull his clothes off. “My clothes could use a washin too.”

Tommy looked at them, “sorry, we was just selling em so we could eat. Just take em and we’ll git out of here.”

The man said, “oh no ya don’t, we have our own way of dealing horse thieves round here.”

They lifted us back on our horses and put a noose around our necks and threw the other end of the rope over a tree branch. Before we could protest any further, they slapped both horses and they took off from under us. I felt the rope tighten around my neck and my feet dangling above the ground. I gasped for breath as I saw a bright light flash across my eyes.

I looked up to see Amanda, one of my students with a worried look on her face. I glanced around, I was back in my classroom.

She smiled, “I was wondering if you could help me with a couple of these problems, I’m not sure I get them yet. I mean if you are ok, you don’t look so good.”

I smiled back at her, “yes, of course, please sit down, I’m fine.”
