Back at the Brothers’ Inn where a surprise is awaiting.
We woke at first light. The falling crystal had stopped sometime in the night. The canopy was still over us. Light filtered through the woven fabric, bluer than it should have been because of what lay outside.
We released the intent. The canopy dissolved. The fabric returned to our clothing. The petals to my bodysuit, the leather strips to Garrick's cloak, the silk and linen back to where they had been.
We saw the ground.
It was crystal as far as we could see in every direction. Knee-deep in places. Less in others. The crystal had piled in drifts and ridges. The dirt and rock were buried under it. The road ahead was a long line of glitter that caught the morning sun and threw it back at us in colours that should not have been on a road.
Lirael picked up a handful of shards. He turned them over in his palm. He held one up between his thumb and forefinger and looked through it at the light.
"Same material," he said. "Same as the patches. Same as what Spark carries."
"Yes," Vesper said.
"And the storm is gone."
"For now."
Lirael dropped the shards. He brushed his palm on his cloak. There was a small thin line of dried blood on the side of his neck where one of the shards had grazed him the day before. The cut had closed.
We did not talk about what it meant. We had talked enough about it the night before. The storm had been a message. Something had been angry. The storm was over. We had to move.
Joren shouldered his pack. He started walking.
The crystal crunched underfoot. The shards were sharp. The thinner ones broke under our boots. The thicker ones held and we stepped over them. Some of them caught the light and cut shapes into our shadows. I rode on Joren's shoulder. I could feel his weight settling on each step. The crystal made a sound under his boots that was not the sound of dirt or stone — high and faintly musical, almost like glass.
We walked.
For the first hour we said nothing. The sound of our boots on the crystal was the only sound. There were no birds. The animals that should have been in this area had gone. The crystal field extended further than we had thought it would — past the immediate area of the cave entrance, out into the foothills, along the road. I tried to count how far it went and lost count.
Eventually it thinned. By midday we were walking on regular dirt again, with crystal only in patches. By the afternoon the crystal was gone and the road was the road we knew.
"It was concentrated at the entrance," Vesper said. "Whatever did that — it knew where we were going to be. It hit precisely there. Outside the inn road, outside the towns. It was for us."
"Yes," Joren said.
"That takes intent."
"Yes."
"Whatever is doing this knows where we are. It knew we would come out of the mountain. It has been waiting."
"Yes."
"That is not good."
"No."
The crew was quiet for the rest of the afternoon. Joren did not need to say more. The conclusion was the conclusion. We had been seen. We were going to keep being seen. Whatever was watching us was at distance — too far to act on us directly, too far for us to find. But it had reached us once. It might do so again.
We kept walking. The sun went down. Lirael found a flat stretch of ground beside the road and we stopped. We did not need to make camp the old way. We gathered close. We pushed the intent outward. The canopy formed. We slept inside it.
That night, inside the canopy, I thought of Sprinkle.
I reached for her.
She was there. The bond opened between us — quick, warm, a recognition.
"Spark."
"Sprinkle."
"You are alive."
"We are. The clothing Holta gave us saved us. Last night. There was a storm. We would not have lived through it without the canopy. Tell her. Thank her."
"I am on travels," Sprinkle said. "I am not near Holta. But I will tell her when I see her next. She will be glad."
"Thank you."
She withdrew. I held the warmth of the contact for a moment longer. Then I let it go.
Vesper made the same joke he had made the night before — that we had been ridiculous for weeks not using it. The joke was funnier the second time because we had not had to use it for a storm. The third time he would tell it — and he was going to — it would be funnier still.
The second day was uneventful. We walked. We ate from the dried provisions we had carried out of the realm. We did not speak much. The shock of the eighteen months had not been mentioned because we did not know about it yet. We thought we had been gone a couple of weeks. The country we walked through was the same country we remembered.
The third day was also quiet. The land was still familiar. The streams were the same streams. The smell of the woods was the same.
On the fourth day Garrick noticed something.
"The grass is taller than it was," he said.
"It is summer," Lirael said.
"It was summer when we left."
"Now it is late summer."
"Two weeks does not make grass this tall."
We did not have an answer. We kept walking. The grass was taller than it should have been. The road verges were thick with wildflowers I did not remember. We assumed Lirael was wrong about the season. We were wrong about that.
By the fifth day the country had begun to change in a way that did not match the season at all. New orchards had been planted at the edges of fields we had walked past on the way out. A small road branched off the main one that I did not remember. A new stone wall ran along a hillside that had been bare.
By the sixth day we were close to the inn. The signs of recent settlement were everywhere. The road had been widened in places. Cart tracks crossed it. We passed a small group of travellers heading the other way — pilgrims, perhaps, walking single file with packs and staffs. They nodded at us as they passed.
"Where are you going," Joren asked one of them.
"To the inn," the man said. "Have you been there."
"We have been."
"Then you know."
He did not stop walking. He continued past. We continued our way.
I felt Joren stiffen on the shoulder I was riding on. He did not say anything. He kept walking. The pilgrim's tone had been the tone of a man who was going somewhere he knew well. The inn was a destination people travelled to on purpose. That had not been the inn we left.
The journey took six days. The landscape changed as we travelled. The country between the bulge mountain and the inn had been sparse and rocky when we crossed it before. Now it was green. The hills were greener than I remembered. Wildflowers grew thick at the road verges. The streams ran fuller.
We did not understand why. We assumed the season.
Then we crested the last rise before the inn and stopped.
The inn was visible in the valley below. It was not the inn we had left. A second wing extended east from the original structure. A third was under construction to the west — half-built walls of fresh stone, scaffolding around the upper sections. Smoke rose from three chimneys instead of one. The yard was larger and busier. Carts arrived. Workers moved between the inn and the outbuildings. The road leading to the inn had been widened and cobbled where it had been dirt.
Fields of flowers I had not seen here before. New orchards. Beehives in rows behind a low stone wall. The whole place looked like a settlement, not an inn.
We stood on the rise for a long moment.
"This is not right," Garrick said.
"This is the inn," Joren said. "But it has grown."
"It has grown too much."
"Yes."
We walked down.
Workers in the yard saw us coming. One of them — a young man I did not recognise — stopped what he was doing. He stared. Then he ran into the inn. He came out a moment later with three more workers. They all stopped and stared at us.
One of them ran further into the building. We heard a shout. Then more shouts. Then Tommy came out the main door at a run.
Tommy stopped when he saw us. He stared. He blinked.
Then he came forward at a walk. He embraced Joren. He embraced Garrick. He embraced Vesper. He took Lirael's hand. He looked at me on Joren's shoulder.
"You are back," Tommy said.
"We are back," Joren said.
"You have been gone for eighteen months."
The crew did not speak for a moment.
"That cannot be right," Vesper said.
"It is right. It has been eighteen months since you left for the Stone realm. We had begun to wonder if you would return at all."
Vesper looked at Joren. Joren looked at me. I looked at Cockper. None of us had a way to process this. We had spent two or three days inside the Stone realm by our own bodies' clock. We had spent what felt like millennia at the planetary scale. We had walked six days back to the inn. The total was perhaps two weeks of our own experience.
Eighteen months.
"That is —" Lirael started, and stopped.
"You were gone a long time," Tommy said. "I have so much to tell you. I have so much to thank you. What has happened here is incredible."
Joren nodded slowly. The crew followed Tommy toward the inn. Workers parted around us. Some of them stared. Some of them whispered. The younger ones — workers hired in the time we had been gone — did not know who we were. They saw Tommy embracing strangers and wanted to understand.
Tommy noticed.
"They will learn who you are," Tommy said. "Everyone here will. Come inside."
The interior was bigger than I remembered. The main hall had been enlarged. New tables, new fireplace, new beams. The smell was bread and roasting meat and ale and the warm-skin smell of an inn full of people. Guests ate at the tables — perhaps thirty of them. They looked up as we entered. Tommy waved at them.
He took us to a private room at the back. A small fire burned. He poured us drinks.
"Sit," he said. "All of you. I have been waiting to tell someone this for a long time and I want to tell you properly."
We sat.
Tommy stood by the fire and talked.
The inn had become a centre. Word spread after the crew left. The brothers' transformation became known. The inn's hospitality became known. Guests started arriving from further and further away. First from the next towns. Then from the cities. Then from across realms.
They could not keep up with demand. The east wing was built to accommodate more guests. The west wing — half-finished — was being built to accommodate even more. The inn had become the first place in any realm, as far as Tommy knew, dedicated to masochists. Men who needed to be hurt. Men whose desires went beyond what regular inns and brothels could accommodate. The inn became the place those men travelled to. Sadists came too — they were welcome, but vetted. Tommy did not let in anyone who had not been checked. The whole reputation rested on the safety of the masochists. They had to know that the men who came to use them had been screened. They had to know they would be cared for after.
"That is the heart of the place now," Tommy said. "The masochists. The men who could not find what they needed anywhere else. They come here. We house them. We give them what they came for. We make sure they leave alive."
"The medical wing," Tommy said. "That was the development I did not expect. We have two doctors on site now. Permanent staff. They handle three kinds of patients. One — guests with extreme desires whose practice puts them at risk of long-term self-harm. We do not stop the practices. We are not that kind of place. But we monitor. We make sure people who push themselves do not damage themselves permanently. Two — a specialised group of guests who specifically come here to have medical procedures done to them. As part of the act. That is its own developing strand and we are still learning how to manage it. Three — piercings. Everything you can imagine, anywhere on the body. We have a specialist who handles piercings on site."
Vesper leaned forward.
"I would like to see the medical wing," Vesper said. "If that is possible."
"It is. I will arrange a tour."
"Tomorrow morning."
"Tomorrow morning."
Garrick said nothing. Vesper looked at Garrick. Garrick made a face.
"You are going to want to come with me," Vesper said to Garrick.
"I do not want to go to the medical wing."
"You are going to come."
"I will be in your ass at the time."
"That is fine. You will still see what I am seeing."
Garrick sighed.
"I will come," Garrick said.
Tommy continued.
He told us about the brothers. The four — five, I corrected myself silently. There were five of them and they were a unit.
"They live together," Tommy said. "In one room. In one bed. The five of them. They are content. They are happy. They are constantly having sex with each other. They have learned to live inside the family they are. They have become a feature of the inn. Once a week they put on a show in the grand hall. It is the most popular event of the week. Guests book months in advance to be present for it."
Tommy paused.
"I should also tell you. After you left and after the brothers had spent some time here, a delegation of five senior magicians came to the inn. They had heard about the place. They wanted to see for themselves. While they were here, they learned what you had done for the brothers. They were moved by it. The brothers, who had been cruel men, had become genuinely happy. Contributing. Joyful. The magicians decided to grant each brother a sexual gift. Whatever the brother wanted."
"What did they ask for," Lirael said.
"It is best if you hear from them. They will tell you themselves. They want to."
Joren nodded.
"One more thing," Tommy said. "And this is the part that is going to feel like the stars aligning. I am hosting a dinner tonight. In the private dining hall. I had planned it before I knew you were coming. The guests I invited arrived about a week ago. I did not know when — or if — you would return. The dinner happens to fall on the night you walked back through my door. I am telling you it is a coincidence because I want you to know I did not orchestrate it. The stars aligned. You will be glad."
"Who is at this dinner," Vesper said.
"I will not tell you. It is a surprise even though it is a coincidence. Trust me on this."
Joren laughed.
"We trust you," Joren said.
After Tommy left to prepare the dinner, the five brothers came to find the crew.
They walked into the private room as a unit and stood near the fire. They had aged. They looked healthier than I remembered. Better fed. More upright. Their skin was clearer. The eldest had cut his red beard shorter. Number two had let his hair grow. Number three's smile was now relaxed instead of performed. Number four had lost some of his soft middle. The youngest looked the most changed — his hunger-eyed look had softened into mischief.
The youngest spoke first.
"We have been waiting to see you again," he said.
"We have been waiting to tell you something," the eldest said.
The crew sat. The brothers stood. The eldest spoke for them.
"We have spoken to Lirael," the eldest said. "In our own minds. Many times. Since the curse. We have come to understand what you did to us. We understood it was just. We deserved it. We did terrible things and we earned the consequence."
He paused. He looked at his brothers in turn.
"What we did not expect is that the consequence became the answer. Each of our curses — they unmade who we had been. We were cruel because we were unhappy. We were vicious because we were hollow. The curses filled us. With each other. With purpose. With practice. We could not have known this would happen, but it did. We are happier now than we have ever been."
Number two spoke. His voice was steadier than I remembered it.
"We do not regret the curses. We are grateful. We would not have done this for ourselves. We did not know we could."
Number three smiled. It was the relaxed smile now, not the wide performance.
"We have each other. We have the bed. We have the work here at the inn. We have the show. We do not need anything else."
The youngest stepped forward. He looked at me directly.
"And then something else happened. We were blessed with the visit of magicians. They were good to us. We had thought we were forever marked. They saw the change in us and they wanted to give us each something more."
The eldest gestured at his brothers.
"Each of us got one gift. Each of us asked for a different thing. The magicians granted what we asked. We have been living with the gifts for about a year now. We have learned how to use them. We have learned how to share them with each other. I will let each of us tell you what we received."
The eldest cleared his throat.
"I am the one who can hold anything. There is no size too large for my body. Anything that goes into me — I take it. I do not tear. I do not bleed. I do not strain. I open and the thing fits. The brothers test me. The toys we have here test me. It has not failed yet."
He paused.
"It is also a useful gift for the show," the eldest said. "Tomorrow you will see why."
Number two went next.
"I read the kinks of people," number two said. "Anyone who walks into a room I am in. I look at them and I see what they want. Even the things they have not said out loud to themselves. I see what would make them happy if they could ask for it. I see what they are afraid of. I see who they are when no one is watching."
"That is a heavy gift," Vesper said.
"It is. I do not use it to embarrass people. I use it to help them. When I am the MC at the show, I look at the audience and I read what they need to hear from me to feel at ease. I name the things they cannot name themselves. I do it without judgment."
He paused. He looked at Vesper.
"Since you are here," he said, "I can demonstrate. I have been looking at you for the past ten minutes."
"Be careful," Vesper said.
"I will be careful. I can see that you are extremely aroused by the idea of medical apparatus entering your body in some form or another. You have been thinking about it since you walked into this inn. You want to be on the table. You want the procedure done to you. You want the precision of someone who knows what they are doing more than you want it to be pleasurable. And you have been wondering whether you can ask for it without it being too much."
The room was quiet.
Vesper laughed once. A small, surprised laugh.
"That is accurate."
"I told you."
"Well." Vesper turned the cup in his hand. "A bit. I was curious about the medical wing. That is all. Nothing specific."
"Nothing specific," Garrick said. He did not look up. "He asked me this morning how thick a needle has to be."
"That was a general question."
"It was very specific about needles."
Garrick, who had been listening with his arms folded, made a sound.
"This is going to be a problem for me," Garrick said.
"Why," number two said.
"He is going to want to spend our entire time at this inn with the doctors."
"Yes."
"I am going to be inside him while it happens."
"Yes."
"That is going to be an interesting afternoon."
Number two smiled.
"That is also part of what I see," he said. "I see that you are not really complaining."
"I am not really complaining."
The brothers laughed. The crew laughed. Vesper put his hand on Garrick's knee.
"You were the brains of the family," Vesper said to number two. "You were the one who calculated."
"Yes. The magicians knew. They gave me a way to use that the way it should have been used in the first place. To see people. Not to manipulate them."
Number two sat down on the arm of a chair. He had not been sitting before. The conversation was making him remember himself before the curse and the gift were the same thing.
Number three was next. He was grinning before he started.
"I am the alpha cocksucker," number three said. "When I want to suck a brother's cock, I look at the brother. The brother gets hard. The brother has no choice. I do not have to ask. I just look."
"You see," the eldest said, looking at me. "I get hard whenever he wants. There is nothing I can do. I do not even feel it coming. I just look up and he is looking at me and suddenly I am hard."
"It is fun," number three said.
"For you."
"Yes."
The brothers laughed.
"It only works on us," number three said. "It does not work on outsiders. With my brothers — I do not ask."
"Demonstrate," Vesper said.
Number three turned his head slowly and looked at number four. Number four had been quiet. He flinched. His face went red. The shape of his linen at the front began to change.
"Stop," number four said.
Number three looked away. The shape at the front of number four's linen subsided. Number four exhaled.
"That is a strong gift," Vesper said.
"It is. I am gentle with it. Usually."
The brothers laughed again. Number four laughed too — he was not angry. He had been ready to demonstrate, but he had not wanted it to happen mid-conversation.
Number four spoke next. He spoke without shame.
"I was the filthy brother," number four said. "I was the one who wanted what others did not want. Shit. Piss. The leavings of bodies. The magicians knew. They gave me the gift of sustaining myself entirely on that. I do not need ordinary food anymore. I eat what other men produce. I drink what other men drink and then expel. I am happier than I have ever been. I do not need to hide what I am. I have a function. I have a place at this inn that is mine."
Lirael nodded.
"Tommy mentioned you," Lirael said.
"Tommy is very kind. He has built a private space for me. The guests who want to use me come to that space. They know what they are coming for. They use me. I am content. I am full."
He smiled. The smile was the simplest of the five brothers' smiles. He was a man at peace with himself.
The youngest was last.
"I kiss," the youngest said.
They waited. He let them wait.
"That is the whole gift. I kiss. But there is no kiss in any realm like the one I give. The magicians took the thing I already loved and made it more than a body should be able to feel. When I kiss a brother, he forgets there is anything else. He forgets his own name for a while."
"That does not sound like much next to the others," Vesper said. He said it to draw him out. He knew it was not nothing.
The youngest smiled.
"You think the others got the strong gifts. The opening, the seeing, the cocks. I thought that too, at first. Then I understood. I am the one they fight over now." He looked at his brothers. "I want to kiss them all the time. It is the only thing I want. And they let me, because they have learned what it is."
"Demonstrate," Vesper said.
The youngest did not answer with words. He crossed to number three, took him by the jaw, turned him, and kissed him.
It was slow. He did not rush it. He held the back of number three's head with one hand and the side of his face with the other and he kissed him. Number three's hands came up and held onto him. Number three made a sound into his mouth.
I felt it from the nest. Not the kiss. The heat coming off the crew watching it. Joren shifted in his seat. Lirael had gone still. Vesper had stopped turning his cup. Even Garrick, who never gives much away, set his cup down slowly and left it there.
Number three was hard too. There was no hiding it. He had not been touched anywhere but his face and his mouth and the shape of him stood out plain against his linen.
The youngest broke off. Not all the way. He kept his forehead against number three's. He turned his eyes to the crew without moving his head.
"I can push this further," he said.
Nobody told him to stop.
He went back to number three's mouth. He pulled him in closer, one arm all the way around him now, the kiss deeper and slower than before. Number three held onto him with both fists in his shirt. The sound number three made changed. His whole body had gone tight against his brother. The youngest did not touch him below the waist. He did not need to.
A dark patch came through the front of number three's linen. It spread. He was coming, standing up, fully clothed, from nothing but his brother's mouth. The youngest held him through all of it and did not break the kiss until number three's hands loosened and slid down.
Then he let him go. Number three sat down hard on the bench. He was breathing like he had run.
The youngest turned to the crew and gave a small shrug.
"That is the gift," he said.
Nobody spoke. Then Vesper laughed, low.
"You were right," Vesper said. "I thought the others got the strong gifts."
The crew was quiet for a moment longer. Then everyone laughed.
"You have built a religion of yourselves," Vesper said. "Among the five of you."
"We have," number two said.
"It works."
"It works."
The brothers stayed for a while longer. They asked the crew about the Stone realm. The crew gave a short, polite account that left out the corruption, the patches, the storm. They told the brothers about the cockrings — yes, still on. They told the brothers about the new teeth. The brothers were fascinated.
Joren showed them his obsidian tooth. The eldest peered at it with what looked like real interest.
"You can call each other across realms with that," the eldest said.
"We can."
"That is more useful than my gift."
"Different uses."
"Yes."
The eldest sat down on the arm of the chair next to number two. The five brothers had been standing in formation when they came in. Now they were settling into the room. They had told their story. They were comfortable.
The conversation drifted into smaller things — what was new at the inn, who was working here now, what dishes Tommy was famous for these days, which guests were the most interesting. The brothers were a unit. They finished each other's sentences. They laughed at the same things. They moved on from topic to topic.
When the brothers left, the eldest stopped at the door.
"You are coming to the show," he said. "Tomorrow night. We will not start without you."
"We will be there," Joren said.
"Good."
The brothers left. The crew sat in silence for a moment after.
"They are good men now," Garrick said.
"They are," Joren said.
"That is not something I expected to say."
"No."
That evening Tommy led the crew to the private dining hall. It was the same hall where we had eaten before the Stone realm journey but enlarged — the back wall pushed out, a new long table, a fire at each end.
The guests were already seated.
Sprinkle sat at the far end. She lit up when she saw me and almost flew off the lap she was sitting on.
The lap belonged to a shield maiden. She was very tall. Even seated I could see she was taller than any of the crew except possibly Joren. Her skin was dark — a deep brown, almost black at the temples, lighter at the hollow of her throat. Her eyes were a piercing light brown that seemed to catch all the light in the hall. Her breasts were extraordinarily large — visible even under the leather travelling jerkin she wore. They drew attention by their sheer scale. She wore her hair in many small braids gathered at the nape of her neck.
She watched us with an expression I could not read.
Next to her sat another shield maiden. Also tall, though not as tall. Pale skin, red-blonde hair, a hard mouth. She ate bread and watched the room.
"Friends," Tommy said. "May I present —"
"Sprinkle," I said, before he could finish.
Sprinkle had crossed the room. She landed on the table in front of me. Her face was bright. She hugged me — small sprite to small sprite, an embrace of crossed arms and pressed foreheads. I hugged her back.
"You came," I said.
"Of course I came."
The tall shield maiden stood up. She was even taller standing. She walked to the head of the table where Joren was. She bowed her head slightly.
"I am Nessa," she said. "I am Sprinkle's bond partner. I came with her because she would not stop talking about you for months and I wanted to see who she has been speaking of."
Joren bowed his head in return.
"Welcome," Joren said.
"Thank you."
The second shield maiden also stood. She was less ceremonious.
"Halvar," she said. "I am not here for ceremony. I am here because Nessa is here and because the inn is a thing I had to see."
Joren acknowledged her too.
Nessa explained, sitting back down, while the crew took their seats. They had been at the inn for about a week. They had come because Sprinkle had received word from me that the baby stone had been placed. Sprinkle and Nessa had decided that the crew would pass through the inn on the return journey. The inn was the last hospitable place before the road that led to the Stone realm. They had been almost certain the crew would come back this way. So they had come to meet us.
"You have travelled a long way," Joren said.
"We have. The between-space is safer than it was. But not fully safe."
"How safe."
"Stable enough to cross. Not stable enough to be comfortable. The damage is still there. The crystallisation has not fully cleared from the in-between."
"Yes," Vesper said. "We expected that."
Sprinkle returned to my level — she sat on the table between the crew and the shield maidens. She talked while we ate. She told us about her journey to the inn. She and Nessa had walked through the Lesbian Realm border country and then crossed the between-space carefully. They had passed Watcher-shapes still at the edges. Sprinkle had felt them watching. Her bond to Nessa had kept her steady.
Halvar laughed at one point and added, mouth full of bread:
"On the road through your realm, men kept stopping us. Asking us things. Some of them flirted. Some asked if we were available. They had never seen women before. They wanted to know if they could touch us."
"Did you let them," Garrick asked.
"No. We laughed. They were earnest. It was flattering. We did not act on it. But it made the journey longer than it should have been."
"They had never seen a woman."
"Most of them had not."
Sprinkle continued her own thread. She had been watching for me from the day she crossed into our realm. She had felt my bond from far off. She had known I was alive and well, but she had wanted to see me in person. The bond had carried information for months but it had not been the same as sitting at a table.
Then Sprinkle saw Cockper.
He was on my shoulder. He had been quiet through the introduction. Now Sprinkle looked at him directly. Cockper looked at her.
The space between them changed.
Sprinkle's face went still. Cockper's face appeared and stayed in one configuration — not appearing and disappearing as he usually did. The two of them stayed locked on each other for a long moment.
"This is Cockper," I said. "He is from the Stone realm."
"Yes," Sprinkle said. "I see what he is."
"He is a sprite."
"I see that too."
Garrick sat next to Vesper. He had been watching the moment. He spoke now.
"That makes four of us at this table," Garrick said.
Sprinkle looked at him. She had been so focused on Cockper she had not been counting.
"Of course," Sprinkle said. "You. I had forgotten. There are four sprites here."
"I do not get out much. I am inside Vesper most of the time. People forget."
"I will not forget again."
"It is fine," Garrick said.
Cockper hopped off my shoulder onto the table. He walked across to Sprinkle. He extended one of his small copper hands. Sprinkle reached out. Their hands touched.
Both of them lit up. Not visibly — there was no glow — but I felt it through my bond. Sprinkle felt it. Cockper felt it. Garrick felt it from where he was. The four of us were all sprites and we all felt the recognition.
I knew at that moment what I had been suspecting. Cockper was a sprite of the same kind as Sprinkle, Garrick, and me. He would bond eventually. He would have a partner.
I was about to speak. Then Joren put his hand on my shoulder.
"Let them," he said through the bond.
I let them.
Sprinkle and Cockper stayed connected for another long moment. Then Cockper hopped back across the table to me. Sprinkle came with him. They both settled near my elbow. They would spend the dinner together.
The crew had been watching.
"You are all sprites," Vesper said.
"We are."
"There is something between them."
"Yes."
"You have another sprite friend now."
"Yes."
I introduced Cockper formally to the room. I explained what he was and what he was for. He was the stone people's ambassador to the human realm. When we spoke with him, the entire stone realm listened. The rocks. The air. The water. The energy. Everything in the realm was one with Cockper. When he was here, they were all here.
The room went quiet.
Nessa nodded slowly. She understood.
"Then we welcome the stone realm to this table," Nessa said. "And we thank them for sending him."
Cockper's face shifted to mischievous. He bounced once on the table. The mood lightened.
We ate.
The dinner went late. The food was good. The wine was good. Tommy came in and out and chatted. The room was warm.
At some point — after the meal proper, while the cheese and the small honey-cakes were being passed — Vesper asked Nessa a question.
"Sprinkle says you read the weather," Vesper said.
"I do."
"How far ahead."
"Days. Sometimes longer for big things. A hard winter I can feel by late summer. A storm I can feel two or three days out. The closer it gets the clearer it is."
"You feel it where."
"In my body. In the air on my skin. In the light. I do not have words for most of it. I have learned to trust it without being able to explain it. The farmers in the Lesbian Realm stopped asking me to explain a long time ago. They just ask me whether to plant."
Vesper turned his cup in his hands. He was quiet for a moment.
"Three days ago there was a storm where we were," he said. "Not rain. Something else. It came down hard and it was aimed at us. Would you have felt a thing like that coming."
Nessa thought about it. She did not answer quickly.
"I do not think so," she said. "What I read is the turning of ordinary things. Seasons. Weather. The moods of the land. A thing that is aimed — a thing with intent behind it — that is not weather. That is someone doing something. I would not feel that the way I feel a storm. I might feel the land flinch around it. But I would not see it coming."
Vesper nodded slowly. He filed the answer somewhere.
"That is a useful distinction," he said.
"Why do you ask."
"No reason worth the dinner. I am curious how these things work."
Nessa looked at him for a moment longer. She did not press. She let it go and reached for a honey-cake.
"You should ask me again sometime when we are not at a feast," she said. "I will tell you what I can. It is a long conversation and this is not the night for it."
"Another time," Vesper said.
"Another time."
The conversation drifted. Halvar told a story about a sea voyage where the whole crew had been seasick except her. Tommy came back in and refilled the cups. The dinner relaxed into its second half.
I watched Cockper. He had stayed on the table near Sprinkle since the moment of recognition. They were not exactly together. They were just close. They were aware of each other.
When the dinner ended, Tommy showed us all to our rooms. The shield maidens had a large suite on the upper floor. Sprinkle went with them. Cockper looked at me before they left.
"Go," I said through the bond between sprites. "Spend time with them."
Cockper hopped off my shoulder and went with Sprinkle. He would be with the shield maidens for the night.
We went to our own room.
The next morning Vesper went to the medical wing. Garrick went with him. I went with them too. I wanted to see what the wing was like and I wanted to see what Vesper would be like in it.
The medical wing was on the ground floor of the new east extension. It was clean. The walls were painted white. The floors were polished stone. There were several treatment rooms, a larger room with chairs and a low platform in the centre, and a private wing at the back for resident patients.
The two doctors were waiting for us. Tommy had told them we were coming. The older doctor was a heavyset man with grey hair and steady hands. His hair was cropped close. He wore a heavy linen apron over plain travelling clothes. The younger was a man in his thirties with a calm voice. He had a beard trimmed close to his face. He also wore an apron. Both shook our hands.
The older man introduced himself as Doctor Halve. The younger was Doctor Bren.
"Tommy says you were the ones who started all this," Doctor Halve said.
"We did some of it," Joren said. "Tommy did the rest."
"He says you cursed the brothers."
"We did."
"That curse is the reason this wing exists. People came to see what kind of place would house such men. They stayed because they found a place that did not turn them away. We are here because of them. We are here because of you."
Vesper inclined his head. He did not say anything. He was already looking past the doctor at the corridor that led to the treatment rooms.
Doctor Halve laughed. He had noticed.
"Let me show you," he said.
He took us down the corridor. The first treatment room was simple — a low padded table, a wall of shelves with bottles and folded cloths, a wide basin for washing. He named the contents of the shelves as we passed: salves, oils, sutures, anti-bleeding herbs, a green compound he said was for nerve pain. Vesper picked up one of the bottles and unstoppered it. He smelled it. He nodded slowly.
"This one is good," he said.
"It is the only one of its kind I know how to make. The recipe is from a healer in the south. I had to travel for three months to learn it."
"You travelled to learn medicine."
"All the time. There is more to know than any one person can hold. I keep going back."
The second treatment room was set up differently. A heavy chair with leather straps. A small low table with a fitting for a candle and a fitting for a clamp. A roll of leather gags on a hook.
"This room is for procedures that require restraint," Doctor Halve said. "Some of the patients want the restraint as part of the procedure. Some need it because they cannot hold still through pain. We use both."
Vesper looked at the chair for a long moment. Then at the gags.
"You restrain consensually."
"Always. We do not work on people who have not asked."
"Good."
The third treatment room was the largest. It had the chairs and the low platform Tommy had mentioned. The walls had hooks at varying heights. A long bench ran along one side, with bottles arranged in order of use.
"This is the demonstration room," Doctor Bren said. He had joined us in the corridor. "Some of our patients prefer to have procedures done in the presence of others. Some specifically want to be observed by other patients who are waiting for their own procedures. We allow it. The bench is for the observers."
"You have an audience."
"We have an audience when the patient wants one. Otherwise it is just the two of us and the patient."
He showed us the resident patient wing at the back. Three patients were currently in residence. Doctor Halve described them in vague terms. Two were guests with extreme practices that put them at risk of long-term self-harm — he did not stop the practices but monitored them. The third was scheduled for a procedure in the next week. We did not see the patients themselves. The wing had its own quiet corridor, its own private rooms, its own attendants. The whole arrangement felt like a small hospital that had grown inside the inn.
Then he showed us the piercing room.
The piercing specialist was a lean man with very dark hair pulled back tight. He had a wide leather belt with tools on it — small awls, a row of fine needles, a curved instrument I did not recognise, a folded cloth, two small bottles. He was working on a patient when we came in. A man on a low table with his trousers pushed down. He was working on a piercing through the head of his cock. He was very precise.
Vesper made a small sound.
"You may stay if you would like," the specialist said. "He is fine with witnesses."
The patient on the table nodded. He could not speak — his mouth was occupied with a leather bit he had been given for the pain. But he was relaxed. His eyes were open. He was paying attention to what was happening to him. He had a hand on his own thigh, fingers curled, not gripping but present.
Vesper stayed. Garrick stayed. I stayed.
The specialist explained as he worked. He named the position of the needle. He named the angle. He showed how he calibrated for the specific patient — the head of this man's cock was not symmetrical, he said, and the metal had to enter at a slight angle to match the way the tissue would settle. He slid the needle through. He moved with a slowness that was practised, not careful. He had done this many times.
The man made a sound around the leather. His thigh did not move.
The specialist slid the metal through and clamped it on the other side. He wiped the site with a clean cloth. He put a small amount of salve on it. He nodded to him.
"You are done. You can rest for a few minutes. Then you can dress."
He came over to us. Vesper had a thousand questions. He asked them.
Where did he source his metals. How did he calibrate for each individual. What was the protocol if the piercing rejected. What was the salve. How did he manage pain in places that were particularly sensitive. What was the longest-running piercing he had done. What were the gifts that the magicians had not granted but that piercings achieved. How did he think about adornment versus function.
He answered every question. He was patient. He liked talking about his work.
The metals, he explained, came from three different sources. A miner in the eastern mountains supplied his gold and his silver. A trader from the south brought him a particular bronze alloy that did not corrode in body tissue. A blacksmith in the next town shaped his steel pieces to his specifications. He did not trust just any metal — bodies rejected most metals over time, and only a few worked for long-term wear.
Calibration was about geometry. Every body was different. Every piercing site was different. He had to learn to read the skin — its thickness, its tension, the way the tissue moved underneath. He had spent ten years getting good at it.
Rejection was rare if the metal was right and the placement was right. When it happened he removed the piercing immediately, treated the site, and waited. He never tried to push a piercing that the body was resisting.
The salve was his own. He had inherited the recipe from his grandfather, who had pierced ears and nipples for two generations. He had added his own ingredients over the years.
Pain management was the hardest part. He had learned to read the patient — to know when to slow down, when to speed up, when to pause and let the body settle. Some patients wanted to feel everything. Some wanted to be helped past the worst moments. He read each one.
He showed Vesper his tools. He let him handle them. He let him watch him clean them. He explained the curved instrument — it was for piercings that required threading through a curve of tissue rather than a straight line. He had developed it himself.
Vesper went quiet for a moment. He was looking at the needles on the belt. Then he put a hand flat on his own chest, over the left side, and pressed.
"How long does a nipple take," he said.
"Three minutes," the specialist said. "Less, if you hold still. It is one of the simpler ones. The tissue is thin and it sits where I can see all of it."
Vesper kept his hand there. He pressed again, lightly, feeling for the spot.
"Does it reject often."
"Rarely. A nipple takes well. The metal sits clean and the body learns it fast."
Vesper looked at his own hand on his chest. He looked at the needles again. I knew the look. It was the look he got when he had been turning something over and the turning was done.
"I think I want one," he said.
Garrick had been quiet in the corner. He did not move from it.
"You thought about it the whole time he was talking," Garrick said.
"I did."
"Then have it."
The specialist did not push. He waited until Vesper looked back at him.
"I can do it now," the specialist said. "Or you can think on it. Either is fine."
"Now," Vesper said.
He took his shirt off and lay back on the low table. The specialist cleaned the site. He marked it. He showed Vesper the mark in a small mirror so Vesper could approve the placement. Vesper approved it. The specialist set the clamp, lined up the needle, and named the angle the way he had with the man before.
"Breathe out when I tell you," the specialist said.
Vesper breathed out. The needle went through. Vesper made a sound, short, and his hand closed once on the edge of the table and opened again. The specialist threaded the metal through behind the needle and clamped it on the far side. He wiped it. He stood back.
"Done," he said.
Vesper looked down at his own chest. There was a small straight piece of bronze through the nipple, a little bead on each side holding it in place. He breathed in and out and looked at it for a while.
"Bronze," he said.
"For now. This is the alloy that does not corrode. Two beads on each side to keep the channel open while it heals." The specialist put salve on it. "You do not wear anything pretty in it yet. You wear this until it has healed. Then you change it for whatever you like."
Vesper turned his head toward the corner.
"Garrick," he said. "When we have time. Would you make me a shape of gold I could wear in it."
Garrick came over and looked down at the bronze in Vesper's chest. He looked at it the way he looked at everything, taking the measure of it.
"What shape," Garrick said.
"I do not know yet. Something small. You decide. You see bodies better than I do."
"I will think about it."
"That is yes."
"That is yes."
The specialist gave Vesper the rules while he sat up and put his shirt back on.
"Do not touch it for a week," he said. "Not even to look. Hands carry things the channel does not want. Keep it clean for at least three weeks — I will give you the salve and show you how. And do not start to play with it before two months are up if you want the gold to go in without trouble. Leave the bronze in until then. The body has to finish before you change anything."
"A week without touching. Three weeks clean. Two months before the gold."
"Yes."
"I can do that."
"Most people say that," the specialist said. "Then they touch it on the second day." He almost smiled. "You strike me as someone who does what he is told when he understands why. So — every time your hand goes up, that is a thing on your fingers going into an open wound. That is why."
"I understand why."
"Then you will be fine."
Garrick stood in the corner. He watched Vesper. He did not say much. At one point he caught my eye.
"He is in his element," Garrick said quietly.
"He is."
"I am glad we came."
"Even though you did not want to."
"Even though."
We stayed a while longer. Vesper asked questions in clusters and the specialist answered every cluster. He took mental notes. At one point he made the specialist laugh — he asked him something so specific that the specialist said no one had ever asked him that before, and that he would have to think about it.
He gave Vesper a small clay model when he left. It was a model of the curved instrument he had shown him. Vesper held it carefully.
"You can copy this," the specialist said. "If a smith near where you live can make one. The angle is what matters. The curve is what does the work."
"I have a smith," Vesper said, and looked at Garrick.
"Come back whenever you like."
"I will."
When we got back to the main hall Vesper was still talking. He had the clay model in one hand and the specialist's pain method in his mouth — the way he read the body, the way he knew when to slow. He was making it about his own work. Garrick listened the way Garrick listens, which is to say he heard all of it and said little.
Sprinkle was waiting for us. She came straight to me, full-size, bright with something she had to get out.
"The most extraordinary thing happened," she said. "Last night. With Cockper."
"What did he do," I said.
"We got to the room. Nessa and me. We undressed for the night. And Cockper started changing. By himself. He took a human form."
"Yes," I said. "I know he can do that. He showed us once."
"But he was a woman." She said it loud. The crew turned. "A beautiful copper woman. Shining. Tits and all. Everything." She put her hands out in front of her own chest and then did not know what to do with them. "It took us three hours before we slept. Three. I have never."
The crew had gone quiet to listen.
"The stone people," Sprinkle said. "They understood. Completely. They know how we enjoy each other. They built him knowing it. He came out of that realm knowing exactly what Nessa and I would want."
"That is the thing I keep running into," Vesper said. "They saw all of us, all the way down."
"It is more than that," I said. I had been turning it over since she started. "Cockper is not only Cockper. He was made in the Stone realm, out of the realm. He carries it. All of it." I looked at Sprinkle. "When you slept with that copper woman last night, you did not sleep with Cockper. You slept with the whole Stone realm. The mountains. The deep stone. All of it, in a body, in your bed, for three hours."
Sprinkle went still.
"I had sex with the universe," she said.
"You had sex with the universe."
"It was very good," she said.
The crew laughed.
I felt Cockper through the bond then, off somewhere in the inn, warm and pleased and looking for the next person to be near. That was the truth of him. He went to everyone. He wanted to be close to everyone, and he became whatever the closeness asked for. A copper woman one night. Something else the next. He did not think any of it was strange. To him it was the simplest thing in the world. He was made to be what the people near him needed, and he loved doing it, and he never stopped looking for the next one.
"You should watch him," I told Sprinkle. "He will do the same for the next person who undresses near him. He does not keep count."
"I know," she said. She did not look troubled by it. "That is part of why I like him."
Vesper picked his clay model up off the table and put it carefully into his pack.
"This inn," he said. "Every time we stop here the world turns out bigger than it was."
That evening we were performing. The preshow had been my idea. I thought of it the first night, watching the brothers work the hall, and I did not dare ask out loud if it was allowed. I put it to Joren in the bond instead — a short turn before the brothers' main act, each of us showing the audience something, Cockper among them. Joren said he would ask. The brothers agreed, Tommy more than agreed, and so the second night we were going to perform. The format stayed loose. Each of the crew, and the visitors, could come up and tell or show something. It was the kind of evening that had become possible at the inn because of what the inn had become.
The grand hall filled up. Perhaps a hundred and fifty guests sat at the long tables. Workers filled the back. Tommy stood at the front with a small wooden lectern. Beside him was number two — the calculating brother — wearing a long dark coat and acting as the MC for the night.
Number two welcomed the audience. He set the tone. He spoke briefly about each of the crew before introducing them. He had used his gift on the audience before opening — he could read the kinks of every person in the room and he was modulating his welcome to put them at ease. Some of the guests visibly relaxed when he talked about them — not by name, but by the kinks he had named publicly without judgment.
Then he introduced Vesper.
Vesper took the stage. He sat in the chair near the centre, took a sip of wine, lit up a cigratette and looked at the room.
"In the Stone realm," he said, "they gave each of us a piece of the world to be. Not to touch. To be. I had the transformations. I was the thing that turns one rock into another." He turned his cup in his hand. "I was carbon. Soft, black, common. And Garrick pressed down on me. Pressure with no end to it. And carbon, under that pressure, for long enough, becomes diamond."
A man near the front called out. "How long is long enough?"
"A thousand years," Vesper said. "Give or take."
The room laughed. Vesper waited for it, then leaned forward.
"No. Listen. I am going to make you feel this one, because it is the best thing I have." He set the cup down. "You know the few seconds when you come. Your cock starts pumping and your eyes roll back and the room goes away. A few seconds. You all know it."
The room knew it.
"That," Vesper said, "but for a thousand years. That was me becoming diamond. It started and it did not stop. The eyes-back, the room-gone, all of it, stretched out across an age. I was not a man having an orgasm. I was an orgasm that happened to be shaped like a man." "And Garrick, who was pushing the ground down onto me the whole time — he was having it too. The two of us, locked together, coming for a thousand years. That is what makes a diamond. Every diamond you have ever seen is two men who could not stop."
The room was quiet now. Spark felt it in the floor of the stage.
"Now you understand the shape of it," Vesper said. "Let me give you the others. They are easier to hold."
He pointed across the room, to the big man sitting near the back.
"Look at him. That is Joren. You have all seen him drink here." A few laughed. "In the Stone realm, Joren was the core. The molten heart of the world. And what comes out of a man when he is the molten heart of the world is not seed. It is lava. He shot lava, and he did not stop shooting it, ever. A river of it, out of him, for an age."
The room made a sound. Vesper rode it.
"And here is what he did with it. Garrick built the solid rock — the floor of the world, the deep stone. Hard. Cold. And Joren took that rock and fucked it. He drove into the cracks Garrick left and he filled them. Every seam of stone you have ever seen split open, every black vein running through a cliff — that is Joren's lava, pumped into the world's body until it set hard. He fucked the planet full. Now, you should know — that was not really Joren's job. The stone people do it. They have always done it, and they always will. They only let Joren be the core for a while. A long while. Longer than this realm has had a name. Right now, under your feet, one of them is filling a crack you will never see, and he will be filling it long after this inn is dust. For that long while, that was Joren."
The big man at the back raised his cup. The room roared.
"Garrick had the solids," Vesper went on. "The shaping. You all know Garrick." More laughter. "He likes a man's bulge. He looks before he touches, and he looks for a long time." Vesper raised a hand and drew a slow curve in the air. "Every mountain you can see from this inn, every ridge, every hill against the sky — Garrick made those. He was shaping the world the way he shapes a man. Pushing here. Pulling there. Getting the swell of it right. When you walk out tonight and you look at the hills, you are looking at men's curves. He sculpted the whole horizon out of them, one body at a time."
A man at the side asked, "And the rivers?"
"The rivers were Lirael," Vesper said. "He had every liquid there is. And a river is not a gentle thing when a man becomes it. A river fucks. It drives down into solid rock, slow, over an age, deeper and harder, until it has carved a valley out of stone that did not want to move." He pressed his palms together and pulled them slowly apart. "And where a river was not enough, he used his whole hand. He drove it into a crack in the rock and he worked it wider, year on year, until the stone gave and a gorge opened where his fist had been. Every canyon you have heard of, every place where the land is split to the bottom and the water runs down in the dark — that is where Lirael fisted the world open. He decided where the water went. He filled the deep trenches at the bottom of the sea, the ones with weight enough to crush a man flat, and he loved every one of them. The water did not happen to the world. He did it to the world, with his hand."
The room was loud again. Vesper lifted his hand.
"And the air," he said. "The air was Spark." He pointed at him. "Breathe in. Go on." He waited while they did. "That was him. Spark was every gas there is — the air in this room went through him before it went through you. The breath you just took, he was inside you for it. He felt it." He let it build. "He was inside every man here tonight, in and out with every breath, and you never knew. He felt all of it. That was not Spark's to keep either. The air belongs to the stone people, the same as the rest. They only let him be it for a while. But for that while, every breath any creature took, anywhere, was him."
The room came loud. Vesper let it run, then touched his own chest.
"Lirael was not only the rivers out there," he said. "He was the water in your body. The water in your blood. He moved through every man in this room before you were born, and he is moving through you while I talk. You are mostly him. You always have been."
He picked the cup back up but did not drink.
"Now here is the part nobody thinks about," he said. "You think your seed is the important thing you make. It is not. Your piss is."
The room laughed. Vesper let them.
"Laugh. But listen." He leaned forward. "Stone cannot piss. Metal cannot piss. Only a living thing can. So when you piss, and it sinks down into the ground, the stone world reads it. That is the only way the stone knows we are up here at all. A place with a lot of piss in the ground is a place with a lot of life standing on top of it." He looked around the room. "And there is a great deal of piss in the ground right under this inn. Years of it. Every man here. Every night, in the yard, against the wall."
The room came apart laughing. Vesper let it go a while.
"So here is your gift," he said, when they had quieted. "The stone feels the piss soaked down through the rock. It knows this spot is full of life. And because it knows, it holds the fire down. The stone is under there shooting lava, the way it always has — the thing Joren got to be for a while — but it does not open a volcano under a place this alive. It steers the fire somewhere empty instead." He spread his hands. "You have been protecting yourselves the whole time, and you never knew. Every man who ever pissed in that yard told the world underneath you to leave this place be." He grinned. "So keep pissing in the yard. You are not being filthy. You are doing the most important work in Thorendale."
The room came apart all over again, laughing and shouting and banging cups. Spark watched from the nest. Every face in the room had the look of a man who had been handed something true and ridiculous in the same breath, and who meant to tell three people before he slept, and their three after that.
Vesper raised the cup.
"That is the Stone realm," he said. "Now go and tell it right."
There was applause.
Then it was my turn.
I came onto the stage at thumb-size. The audience had to lean forward to see me at first. Then I grew. I went from thumb-size to a foot tall. The audience reacted. I kept growing. I went to three feet. Then five feet. Then I shrank back down to thumb-size and the audience laughed.
"I am Spark," I said. I had to raise my voice from thumb-size but the room quieted to hear me. "I am a sprite. We are small beings that live with our bond partners. Some of you may have heard of us. Some of you may not. There are a few of us in the realms. I live in Joren's underwear. He carries me everywhere he goes."
I grew again. To five feet. The audience could see me now.
Then Cockper, on cue from no one, hopped off my shoulder and onto the table of the nearest guest. He climbed the man’s leg with quick copper fingers, perched on his shoulder, and made his face appear and disappear in rapid, mischievous flickers. The guest let out a surprised bark of laughter.
Cockper was only getting started.
He leapt down into the audience like a living spark of copper. He darted between the long tables, a blur of metallic mischief. At a thick-set masochist whose heavy cock was cruelly trapped in a tight leather restriction pouch—his sadist keeper watching with folded arms—Cockper slipped his tiny hands inside the pouch and worked the buckles and laces open with nimble copper fingers. The pouch fell away. The man’s thick, flushed cock sprang free, slapping heavily against his stomach, already wet at the tip. The sadist swore in shock. The masochist moaned loud and shameless, then dissolved into helpless, grateful laughter. All around them, the nearby tables erupted in delighted roars and whistles, men leaning forward, eyes bright with scandalized delight.
Cockper didn’t pause. He zipped to the next target: a man bound in intricate ropes, wrists and ankles lashed tight, his straining erection on full display. The little copper sprite wriggled between the knots with quick, clever hands and pulled them loose one by one. The ropes slithered free. The bound man gasped sharply as his arms dropped, suddenly liberated. His cock jerked and bobbed in the open air. He stared down at himself in wide-eyed, delighted disbelief while fresh waves of laughter rolled across the grand hall, louder now, mixed with whistles and cheers.
Then Cockper grew to the size of a large fist, shining and impish. He scrambled straight up the thick, hairy thigh of a big, sturdy man in the front row and dove headfirst between his meaty cheeks. He wriggled cheerfully into the man’s arse, small copper body squirming deeper. The big man jolted upright with a loud, booming laugh that quickly turned into a startled, half-screaming roar: “Stop—fuck—ah gods, stop that you little bastard—!” His heavy body shook with involuntary spasms. His thick cock throbbed hard and spurted untouched across his own thigh in short, messy bursts. The entire hall exploded into roaring, thigh-slapping, tear-inducing laughter, the sound crashing through the room like a thunderclap of pure delight.
Cockper finally popped back out, his copper face split in the widest, most satisfied grin I had ever seen on him. He hopped triumphantly back onto my shoulder, bouncing once with glee.
The grand hall was howling with joy.
The mood had completely lightened. The whole room was loose, warm, buzzing, and utterly ready for whatever came next.
What came next was Sprinkle and Nessa.
They came up together. Sprinkle perched on Nessa’s shoulder like a living jewel. The moment Nessa stepped onto the stage the entire grand hall seemed to draw a single, stunned breath.
She wore a gown no one in the room had ever imagined: layers of deepest emerald silk that caught the torchlight like wet leaves after rain, cut low across her immense breasts and cinched tight at the waist with a wide satin bow the colour of midnight. Her full hair cascaded in shining black waves down her back, pinned with tiny silver flowers. Her lips were painted a rich, wet rose. A delicate perfume of wild roses and honey drifted ahead of her, sweet and impossible in a hall that had only ever known sweat, ale, and smoke.
The men had seen the shield maiden before—in leather and steel, tall and formidable. This was something else entirely. This was glamour made flesh, an impossible, breathtaking vision of womanhood in a world that had never known one. Every eye locked on her.
In the third row an artist—a thin, quiet man who had been sketching the brothers’ shows for weeks—froze mid-stroke. His charcoal hovered, then began to fly across the page in frantic, reverent lines. His eyes never left her. Something inside him cracked open and remade itself in the same heartbeat.
Nessa was even taller standing on the stage than she had looked at the table. She moved with the calm authority of a soldier who had simply chosen, tonight, to become a goddess.
Sprinkle introduced herself first. She told the audience she was a sprite. She told them about her bond with Nessa. She made a joke about being the best clitoris-licker in the entire Lesbian Realm. The audience roared. None of them knew what a clitoris was. Sprinkle promised they would learn.
Then she turned to Nessa.
“This is my Nessa,” Sprinkle said. “She is a shield maiden of the Lesbian Realm. The Lesbian Realm is a place of women. Many of you have never seen a woman. Nessa is going to show you what one is.”
Nessa stepped forward.
She reached behind her neck and pulled the tie of her shift. The glorious gown slid to the floor in a whisper of silk. She stood there. Naked. The entire room went silent. Every male eye in the place was on her.
She was tall. Her shoulders were broad. Her dark skin glowed in the torchlight. Her breasts were enormous and full and they hung naturally from her chest. Her stomach was firm. Her hips were wide. There were no genitals between her thighs in the shape the men in the room knew. Instead there was a soft cleft of hair and skin.
The room remained silent.
Sprinkle started talking again. She was completely casual.
“These are her breasts,” Sprinkle said, pushing one up briefly with her small hand. The breast resettled. “They are also called tits. Women have them and they have many functions. They are sometimes sensitive. They are sometimes erotic. Sometimes they get in the way.”
She pushed Nessa’s breast up and let it fall again, demonstrating bounce.
“When she runs they bounce. Sometimes that is annoying. Especially if she is running far.”
The audience laughed. The tension broke.
“She has no penis. Instead she has what we call a vagina.” She pointed. “It is a hole. You can enter it. You can put your cock in it. You can put toys in it. You can put a sprite in it—I live there.”
The audience laughed harder.
“There is also a clitoris. A small part at the top of the vagina. It is the same kind of nerve-rich tissue as the head of your cock. Women can come from it. The same way you come from your cock. It is the same thing in a different shape.”
Nessa stood through all of this. She was unbothered. She was a soldier. This was the first time in her life she had been naked in front of men—there were no men in the Lesbian Realm, and these were the first she had ever met—but she carried it without flinching. She was teaching the room and the room was learning.
Sprinkle made a few more jokes. The audience asked questions. Someone asked how women came. Sprinkle explained. Someone asked if women felt pleasure the same way men did. Sprinkle said yes. Someone asked if women could be fucked the way men could. Sprinkle said yes, they have lots of creative toys to play with. The audience absorbed this.
Then Nessa spoke for the first time.
“If any of you ever want to visit the Lesbian Realm,” she said, “you are welcome. The between-space is not entirely stable yet. It is not recommended for casual travel. But we hope that when it is fully healed, you will all come and see what a realm of women is. We will receive you.”
She bowed slightly. She bent down, picked up the emerald gown, and drew it back over her head. Sprinkle returned to my elbow.
The room applauded. Loudly. Many of the men were still staring. They had just been given a long, calm, educational tour of a woman’s body and they did not know what to do with the information. Some of them were taking it in good humour. A few looked confused. A few looked moved.
In the third row the artist kept sketching, charcoal flying, tears in his eyes.
Tommy stood up.
“Thank you, friends,” Tommy said. “Now—the brothers just after a short break.”
Drinks were refilled. The lights at the back of the hall dimmed. A platform stood ready at the centre of the room.
Number two stepped forward as MC. He spoke briefly.
“Welcome, friends, to the weekly show,” he said. “Tonight my brothers and I are honoured to perform for you.”
He introduced them one at a time. The eldest came out and waved. Number three. Number four. The youngest. Each wore simple linen robes that slipped off easily. They smiled, easy and proud, and took their places at the side of the platform.
Then the show began.
Number three’s act came first.
He stepped out in a small velvet half-cape and a tiny crown he had clearly chosen as a joke. He carried himself with mock solemnity.
“Tonight,” he announced, “I will demonstrate my gift. I have complete control over the cocks of my brothers. They are my lollipops.”
The audience laughed.
“I require a volunteer from the room,” he said. “Someone, please choose which of my brothers I should arouse.”
A man near the front called out, “The eldest!”
“The eldest,” number three said.
He turned to face the eldest, who sat at the side of the platform. The eldest, who had been smiling, suddenly looked surprised. His face changed. The front of his linen robe lifted. The shape underneath it grew hard and obvious.
The eldest stood.
“I guess I have no choice,” he said. He pushed his robe aside.
His cock stood thick and rigid. The audience laughed and applauded.
“I’ll make it quick,” number three said.
He dropped to his knees. He took the eldest’s cock into his mouth. His head moved in a fast, perfect rhythm. His throat opened deep. His hand worked the base in a counter-rhythm. The eldest’s face twisted. He could not stand still.
Number three pulled back an inch. His lips stayed at the tip. The eldest came hard. Five long, visible ropes of cum shot straight into number three’s open mouth.
It took less than twenty seconds.
Number three swallowed, stood, wiped his mouth, and bowed.
The audience roared. The crew applauded with them. Vesper laughed out loud.
The eldest tucked himself away and sat down. He looked dazed.
“Thank you, brother,” number three said.
“Any time,” the eldest said.
Number two stepped forward again.
“Number four is a different kind of brother,” he said simply. “He does not perform on stage. He is available in private for guests with specific needs. He sustains himself entirely on human waste. If any of you wish to give him that gift, he will receive it with gratitude and care.”
Several guests exchanged quiet looks. A few made small notes.
Number four stood and bowed slightly. He looked happy and at peace.
“Thank you, friends,” he said. “I am at your service.”
He sat down.
Then the main act began.
The eldest came forward to the platform. He undressed completely. His thick cock hung heavy between his legs, still half-hard, the head shiny with spit and leftover cum. Two attendants wheeled out a specially built throne — elevated on a low stage so the entire audience had a perfect front-row view. It looked like a royal seat but had been modified: the seat was a wide, padded U-shape with a large open cutout at the front and bottom. The backrest tilted slightly, and the armrests flared outward into stirrup-like supports.
The eldest sat down. He hooked his knees over the wide armrests, spreading his legs obscenely wide. His heavy balls dangled low in the open gap, his hole completely exposed and presented forward toward the audience. The position left nothing hidden — every inch of his cock, balls, and stretched hole was on full display under the bright lights.
He picked up the book that had been placed on a little side table beside the throne, opened it, and began reading.
The audience went quiet. They knew what was coming.
The youngest came out from the side carrying the first wooden dildo — normal size, glistening with oil. He knelt between the eldest’s spread thighs, right in the open gap of the throne. From this angle the audience could see everything: the blunt head pressing against the tight ring, the slow stretch as it sank in, the way the eldest’s hole opened around the shaft.
The eldest turned a page.
The youngest stepped back. Number two handed him the next dildo — noticeably thicker. He oiled it and slid it in from the front, the audience watching the rim stretch wider, the glistening shaft disappearing inch by inch. The eldest’s heavy cock twitched and started to harden, bobbing in the open air.
This went on for several minutes. Each dildo larger than the last. Each one inserted slowly from the front while the eldest read calmly, occasionally smiling at something in the book. The audience could see every detail: the way the eldest’s hole gaped wider with each new size, the slick sounds, the way his balls drew up tight as the biggest dildo — nearly the size of a forearm — stretched him open.
The eldest said, calmly: “If anyone is wondering — this is a very good book.”
The room exploded with laughter.
Then the youngest stepped to the side. Number two announced: “And now — the climax of the evening.”
The youngest moved between the eldest’s spread thighs again. He pushed his sleeves up. He oiled both hands and both forearms until they were dripping. The audience held its breath.
He pressed two fingers into the eldest’s already-stretched hole, then three, then four. He worked his hand in, wrist-deep, twisting slowly so the audience could see the glistening stretch. Then he added the second hand. Both fists sank in side by side, the eldest’s hole stretched impossibly wide around them. The youngest kept going — forearms sliding deeper, elbows disappearing. The eldest’s belly began to distend visibly. The youngest pushed forward. His shoulders followed. His head went in next, face pressed against the stretched rim. Then his torso started to follow.
The eldest’s body opened around him in ways that should not have been possible. The youngest’s hips slid inside. Only one leg remained outside, the eldest’s belly now grotesquely swollen with the clear outline of the youngest inside him.
The eldest, calmly, with the book still in his hand: “Oh. That’s nice.”
The eldest dropped the book onto the side table. His face changed. His hand went to his cock. He came — without anyone touching his cock except himself, briefly, at the end. Thick ropes of cum sprayed out in long arcs, splattering loudly onto the platform in front of the chair.
The youngest emerged in stages, in reverse order. Foot first. Then his torso. Then his arms. Then his head. He was glistening with sweat and lube. In his hand he held the eldest’s book, now slick and dripping. He turned to the audience, held it up like a trophy, and announced with theatrical triumph:
“Oh my gosh, look at what I found over here!”
The audience’s eyes snapped to the side table. The book was gone.
The room exploded in laughter and applause.
The eldest sat in the throne, legs still spread wide, hole still twitching open, a thick strand of lube and cum leaking out of him. The youngest bowed, book in hand, grinning ear to ear.
Number two stepped to the front.
“Friends,” he said. “Thank you for joining us. The show is over. The brothers will be available at the bar for those who wish to speak with them. Good night.”
The room was still buzzing with laughter and applause when a thin, wide-eyed man approached our table with hesitant steps. In one hand he clutched a leather-bound sketchbook, his fingers smudged with charcoal. It was the artist from the third row.
Nessa noticed him first. She smiled warmly and shifted on the bench, making space beside her.
“Please,” she said, her voice rich and kind, “sit with us.”
The man sat as if he were approaching a holy relic. He could not stop staring. The emerald gown had returned to her body, the wide midnight bow perfect once more, tiny diamonds glittering among the silver flowers in her dark cascading hair. Her red lips curved gently. A faint trace of rose and honey perfume still clung to her. He looked utterly bewitched.
“I… I have never seen anything like you,” he said, voice barely above a whisper. “Not in any dream. Not in any story.”
He opened the sketchbook with trembling hands and laid it on the table. Page after page showed Nessa in the gown — the way the deep emerald silk caught the torchlight like liquid gemstones, the dramatic drape across her breasts and hips, the perfect sway of the midnight bow, the elegant poses she had held on stage as the fabric flowed and rippled with every turn. The drawings were alive with reverence for the garment itself.
I found myself staring longer than I expected. Strangely, the gown impressed me more than the woman beneath it had. There was something sacred in fabric that could transform so completely.
Nessa leaned in to look, genuinely interested. “You drew all this during the show?”
He nodded, flushed with pride and nerves.
Vesper, watching with amusement, gestured at her gown. “The fabric is remarkable, isn’t it?”
The artist’s eyes lit up. “The material… the way it moves… the colour… How is it made? What is it?”
Nessa smoothed the emerald silk over her thigh. “In our realm we have evening dresses like this, but this one is special. It was given to the shieldmaidens. The fabric is magical. It reads my intent. It can become armour, travelling leathers, or this gown — whatever I need it to be.”
Vesper’s eyebrows rose. “Oh! Just like ours!” He laughed. “Does it clean itself automatically after three days too?”
Nessa smiled. “Yes. It does.”
The artist stared at the gown as though it were a living miracle. He swallowed hard, then spoke with sudden, fierce conviction.
“I can sew,” he said. “I’ve always sewn. I… I want to make a dress like that. I want to wear something like this.” His voice grew stronger, almost fervent. “It was the most fabulous thing I have ever seen. I’m certain my friends — the ones who understand — will want them too. We could make them together. Dresses… and perhaps… even the shape of the body to go with them.”
He looked up at Nessa again, eyes shining with pure, transformative wonder.
The crew stayed five days at the inn.
We ate well and rested. The crew slept properly for the first time since the Stone realm. The beds in the new wing were good. The food, the wine, the pace — all good.
Joren spent a lot of time outside the inn, walking the new grounds, talking to Tommy about how everything had developed. He went out alone in the early mornings and walked the boundary of the new construction. He came back at midmorning and ate slowly. Then he sat in the main hall and let the inn happen around him.
One morning he came back with a small wooden carving in his hand. He set it on the table where I was sitting.
"What is this?" I said.
"One of the carpenters at the new wing made it. He carves in his spare time. He gave it to me when I told him who I was."
The carving was a small figure of Cockper. The face was etched in a way that suggested appearance and disappearance even on the small wooden surface.
"He is part of the inn now," Joren said.
"He is."
Cockper, on my shoulder, looked at the carving. His face appeared. He bounced once. He climbed down onto the table and stood next to his small wooden self. He compared. He bounced again.
"He approves," I said.
"Good."
Joren left the carving on the table. By the next day it had been moved — Tommy had taken it and put it on a shelf in the main hall, between two old tankards. Cockper went to look at it every few hours after that.
Vesper went back to the medical wing twice. The second visit was longer than the first. He came back with notes — a small leather book he had asked Tommy for, filled with diagrams and observations. He had a list of things he wanted to remember. He had a list of questions he had not yet asked. The piercing specialist had given him the clay model and he carried it in his pocket. He took it out from time to time and turned it over.
Garrick spent his time in the bar with the brothers. They liked him. He liked them. They reminded him of the cruder men he had known in his youth, except these brothers were better now. He drank with them. He told stories with them. He laughed.
I sat with them once — at thumb-size on the table — to listen. Garrick was telling the brothers a story about a blacksmith in his old town who had only one good arm. The brothers were laughing. The eldest had his hand on Garrick's shoulder. Number three was leaning against the bar with his head tipped back, laughing at the ceiling. The youngest was making faces at me on the table. Number four was eating something. Number two was watching the room.
This was how the brothers were now. A unit. Connected to whoever joined them. Garrick fit among them.
Lirael spent his time outside. He walked the new gardens. He sat by the new beehives for hours. He prayed. He did this alone.
I went to find him on the third day. He was sitting on a low stone wall behind the inn, his back to me, looking out at the orchards in the distance. He heard me coming and turned his head. I climbed up and sat next to him at thumb-size on the wall.
"How are you?" I said.
"I am thinking."
"About what?"
"About Pisson. About what he will say when I give him the tooth. About what the ceremony will be like. About whether I am the right one to give it to him."
"You are the right one."
"How do you know?"
"Because you have been carrying him in your mind the whole journey. Because the stone people made it for him through you. Because you are the priest, and a priest delivers what is given to a priest."
Lirael was quiet for a while. Then he picked me up. He set me on his open palm. He looked at me.
"Thank you," he said.
I bowed my head to him.
He set me back on the wall. We sat for a while longer. Neither of us spoke. The bees in the new hives made a soft constant sound. The orchards were green. The sun was warm.
I spent my time with Cockper and Sprinkle. The three of us — well, four of us if Garrick was nearby, and he often was — sat together for most of the days. We talked. We learned each other. Sprinkle taught us things about being a sprite that I had been figuring out alone. Cockper listened. Garrick listened too.
Sprinkle told us about her bond with Nessa. About what it had been like to enter Nessa's body for the first time. About how Nessa had had to teach her how to position herself so that she did not interfere with Nessa's other bodily functions. About how Sprinkle had eventually become so settled inside Nessa that she had begun to feel Nessa's moods through her surroundings — wet when Nessa was happy, dry when Nessa was thinking, warm when Nessa was with people she loved. About how Nessa had begun to feel Sprinkle's moods the same way.
Garrick listened to this and asked questions about his own bond with Vesper. He had not thought about the bond this way. Sprinkle compared notes with him. They found similarities. They found differences. The two of them had a long conversation about what it meant to live inside another being.
Cockper listened to all of this. His face appeared and disappeared. He did not contribute words, but he reacted. He nodded at certain things. He shook his head at others. He climbed into Sprinkle's lap once and stayed there for an hour.
The connection between Sprinkle and Cockper deepened across the days.
On the morning of the fifth day we left.
Tommy embraced each of us at the front gate. The brothers came out together to see us off. The eldest hugged Joren. The youngest gripped my hand between two fingers. Number two shook Vesper's hand and said something quietly that made Vesper smile. Number three winked at all of us. Number four nodded.
We were not leaving alone. Nessa, Sprinkle, and Halvar were coming with us.
They had decided it over the past few days. They had crossed from the Lesbian Realm to meet us, but there was no reason to turn back now. The Elven realm lay ahead and they wanted to see it. The ordination was something Sprinkle wanted to witness. Nessa wanted to walk a road she had never walked. Halvar wanted to be wherever Nessa was. So they packed their things and shouldered their own travelling gear and stood with us at the gate, ready to go.
Tommy looked them over.
"You will look after them," Tommy said to Joren.
"They will look after us," Joren said.
"That is probably true," Tommy said.
Nessa laughed. Halvar laughed.
Tommy embraced Nessa, which took some reaching. He embraced Halvar. He bent down and let Sprinkle touch her forehead to his.
"Come back through," Tommy said. "All of you. Whenever you can. There is always a bed."
"We will," Joren said.
We started down the road.
The road from the inn was wider than it had been before. It was busy in places — carts moving in both directions, people travelling between the inn and the nearby towns. The new wing of the inn had drawn more traffic than the old country had been used to. The world had moved on while we had been in the Stone realm.
The crew was larger now. Eight of us where there had been five, counting the three sprites among us as their own. Nessa walked at the front beside Joren, the two tallest of the group, their strides matched. Halvar walked at the rear with her hand near her sword out of habit. Sprinkle rode on Nessa's shoulder and Cockper rode on mine and the two of them kept finding reasons to be on the same shoulder.
We walked east. The Elven realm was perhaps three days ahead. Pisson was waiting.
The fragment in my pocket was still cold. The pull was still in the same direction. Whatever had sent the storm had not sent another one.
We carried what we knew. We walked.
