My Straight Friend Needed More Than Help

I had known Josh for years.

He was one of those straight friends who always made it easy to forget that I was supposed to keep my distance. Confident, athletic, loud when someone needed to make people laugh, and surprisingly honest whenever we were alone. We had never crossed any boundaries, but there had always been something between us that I couldn't name without getting my hopes up.

So when he showed up at my door one evening with his girlfriend, at first I assumed it was just a normal visit.

It took me a moment to notice that something was wrong.

Josh wouldn't look me directly in the eyes. He stood slightly off to the side, his hands buried in the pockets of his hoodie, tension in his shoulders, as though he already regretted coming here at all.

"Matt, can we come in?" she asked quietly.

I stepped away from the door.

"Sure."

They came inside, but the atmosphere immediately became heavier. Josh sat down on the couch, leaned forward, and rubbed the back of his neck. He didn't look like my usually confident friend. He looked like a guy who wished he could disappear.

"This is a little awkward," his girlfriend began.

Josh immediately lifted his head.

"We don't have to talk about this."

"Josh," she said calmly. "That's exactly why we're here."

I looked from her to him.

"What's going on?"

For a moment, neither of them answered. Finally, his girlfriend explained that Josh had been dealing with tension and discomfort around his pelvic area for a while. He had seen a doctor, ruled out anything serious, and been advised to work on relaxing his pelvic floor muscles and gently releasing the tension. The problem was that Josh didn't even want to talk about it.

"I bought a few things, but he shuts the conversation down every time," she said. "I thought maybe he'd trust you more than anyone else."

Josh clenched his jaw.

"I only agreed to talk."

I sat across from him and immediately nodded.

"And that's all we're doing. Nothing has to happen, Josh."

Josh's girlfriend took a small box out of her bag and placed it on the table between us.

Josh immediately looked away.

His reaction alone told me more than anything I'd heard so far. His shoulders were tense, his hands clenched against his knees, his jaw tight. He didn't look like a guy who was afraid of pain. He looked more like someone who was afraid the situation might become too personal.

His girlfriend opened the box. Inside was a small massager, lubricant, and a few other things that looked far too clinical for a conversation taking place in my living room.

"I thought this might help," she said. "But he won't even try it."

Josh scoffed under his breath.

"Because it's weird."

I didn't answer immediately. I picked up the massager, looked at it, then at Josh, and calmly placed it back on the table.

"I wouldn't start with that."

Josh glanced at me uncertainly but didn't say anything.

His girlfriend watched him for a little longer before quietly exhaling.

"Maybe I'll wait in the car," she said. "You only get more tense when I'm here."

Before leaving, she touched his shoulder.

"You don't have to do anything," she said. "But if there's anyone you can trust, it's Matt."

The door closed behind her, and suddenly the apartment felt far too quiet.

Josh sat motionless, staring at the floor.

"So what now?" he finally asked. "If not that, then what?"

I sat across from him and spoke calmly, without putting any pressure on him.

"Something simpler. Relaxation first, breathing, external touch. No equipment. No rushing."

Josh listened, but his shoulders were still tense.

"And then?"

I stayed quiet for a moment because I knew how the answer would sound.

"Then one finger," I said quietly.

Josh stiffened.

"A finger?"

"Yes. But if you say no, that's the end of it."

He looked at the massager lying on the table, then at my hands, then lowered his eyes again.

"You really know what you're doing?" he asked.

"Yes," I answered calmly. "You can trust me."

Several long seconds passed. Then Josh let out a breath as though he had finally lost the fight against his own embarrassment.

"Okay," he said quietly. "But slowly."

"Okay. Then it'll be easiest if you take everything off," I said calmly.

For a moment, he stood completely still, embarrassed by the thought of getting naked in front of me. Then he slowly pulled off his hoodie, his shirt, his pants, and finally his boxers.

He tried to look indifferent, but his body said otherwise. His stomach was tense, his shoulders stiff, and there was an uncertain expression on his face that I had never seen before.

"Lie on your back," I said. "Bring your legs up a little. It'll be easier that way."

Josh hesitated, but he did it. He lay back on the couch, drew his legs up, and turned his head to the side as though he didn't want to see just how exposed he was. I sat close to him, but I didn't touch him immediately.

"Remember," I said. "You say stop and I stop."

"I know," he muttered.

I picked up the lubricant and squeezed some onto my fingers. I rubbed it between my fingers for a moment, letting it warm against my skin before bringing my hand closer to his body. Josh held his breath the first time I touched him externally.

"Breathe," I said quietly.

At first, he was rigid with tension. He tightened instinctively, as though every part of his body was trying to prove that this was nothing more than practical help. So I didn't rush. I moved my finger gently around the outside, adding more lubricant and waiting for his muscles to stop tightening instinctively.

Only when I felt him relax at least a little did I look at him.

"Can I?"

Josh swallowed.

"Yes," he said almost in a whisper.

I carefully eased my finger in just a little and stopped. Josh immediately gripped the couch.

"Easy," I said. "Just this much. Get used to it."

For several seconds, I didn't move. I let him adjust to the presence of my finger, to the weight of this new closeness, to the boundary we had just crossed. Only when his breathing became a little steadier did I move slightly deeper.

Josh let out a short, muffled sound.

"Does it hurt?" I asked immediately.

He shook his head.

"No. It just feels a little weird."

I began moving very slowly, gently and patiently, pausing often and watching every tightening of his stomach, every tremor in his thigh, every reaction.

After a while, Josh stopped turning his face away. He looked at me through half-closed eyes, confused that his body wasn't reacting the way he had expected.

"Do you want me to stop?" I asked.

He stayed silent for a second too long.

Then his hips moved almost imperceptibly, as though even he didn't want to admit that he was seeking out my touch.

"No," he said quietly. "Keep going."

I watched him carefully.

"Are you sure?"

Josh closed his eyes, and his voice became lower, more honest.

"Yes. It... feels good. Keep going."

I continued for a little while longer, still moving very slowly and never speeding up.

Josh was breathing harder than before, but he wasn't trying to pull away. If anything, his body was beginning to give in to the rhythm. The tension in his thighs gradually faded, his stomach stopped tightening, and the fingers that had been digging into the couch loosened slightly.

"Does that feel okay?" I asked quietly.

Josh nodded, but a moment later he corrected himself aloud.

"Yes," he said weakly. "Don't stop."

Those words changed everything.

Until then, I could pretend this was only about helping him. Caution, trust, relaxation. But when Josh himself asked me to continue, there was more than relief in his voice. There was something more embarrassing there. Something I didn't think he was ready to name yet.

I moved my finger again, gently, a little deeper than before, and felt his body respond. Josh squeezed his eyes shut, tilted his head back, and let out a quiet, broken breath.

"Matt..." he murmured.

"Too much?"

He shook his head almost immediately.

"No. I just... didn't know it could feel like that."

I didn't answer. I only slowed down even more, letting him feel each controlled movement, each pause, each second in which he stopped fighting against his own body.

And then, for the first time since we'd started, Josh stopped looking like someone who was merely tolerating the touch.

He looked like someone who was beginning to want it.

I didn't let it go on for too long.

I could see that Josh was becoming more relaxed, but also more confused by his own reaction. His body had stopped resisting, his breathing had grown heavier, and that thin line between help and pleasure was becoming too obvious for either of us to keep pretending it wasn't there.

So I slowed down.

I carefully withdrew my finger and handed him a towel.

Josh opened his eyes as though, for a moment, he didn't understand why I had stopped. Then reality seemed to catch up with him. He tensed, lowered his legs, and turned his face away as if the embarrassment had only just hit him, delayed by a few seconds.

"So? Did it help?"

For several seconds, he said nothing. He sat naked on the edge of the couch, the towel against his hips, his shoulders slightly lowered, his face showing a mixture of relief, embarrassment, and something else. Something he didn't want me to see.

Finally, he nodded.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "It helped."

I didn't comment on it. I didn't tell him that I had seen more than that. That I had heard the change in his voice. That I had felt the moment when he stopped merely tolerating my touch and started needing it.

Josh got dressed quickly, too quickly, as though putting his clothes back on could return everything to normal. As he fastened his pants, he tried to smile.

"Well," he said in a forced tone. "That was probably the weirdest hangout we've ever had."

"And yet you didn't leave."

He looked at me briefly.

For a second, I thought he was going to say something. Maybe make a joke. Maybe deny it. Maybe call it nothing but help and close the subject forever.

But Josh only lowered his eyes.

"No," he said. "I didn't."

And that was it.

I closed the door behind him, went back into the living room, and looked at the couch, the towel, the lubricant. I tried to convince myself that the subject was closed. Josh had a girlfriend. He was straight. He had come to me for help, and I had helped him.

Except a few days later, my phone vibrated.

The message was from Josh.

"Can I come over for another massage?"

I stared at the screen longer than I should have.

And this time, I knew Josh wasn't asking only for relief.
