Tom shut the door to his room behind them, the click echoing louder than it should have in the tense silence. Ryan sat on the edge of the bed, arms crossed, looking expectant but wary. “Alright, mate, what’s this about? You look like you’re about to confess to murder.”
Tom paced for a second, rubbing the back of his neck, trying to find the words. He stopped in front of Ryan, taking a deep breath. “Look, Ry… this isn’t easy. It’s about Jake.”
Ryan’s brow furrowed. “Jake? What about him? Is he okay?”
“He’s fine. More than fine. But… me and him… we’ve got something going on. Like, romantically. We’ve been… together.”
Ryan stared at him blankly for a beat, then his face twisted in confusion. “What? You and Jake? My brother Jake? What the fuck are you talking about, Tom?”
Tom sat down across from him on the desk chair, leaning forward. “It started that night out a few weeks back. When you went off with that girl and left us. Things just… happened. We kissed, and then… more. I didn’t plan it, Ry. I’ve never been into guys before. But Jake he’s different. He’s sweet, and funny, and he gets me. We’ve been texting since, and last night… it happened again.”
Ryan’s expression shifted from confusion to anger in a flash. He shot to his feet, voice rising. “You’re telling me you’ve been fucking my little brother? In my house? What the hell, Tom! He’s 18, barely out of school, and you’re my best mate you’re supposed to look out for him, not take advantage of him! Did you get him drunk? Push him into it? What kind of sick ”
The door burst open before Ryan could finish. Jake stood there, face pale but determined, having clearly overheard the shouting from downstairs. “Ryan, stop!”
Ryan whirled on him. “Jake? What the did he force you? Tell me the truth, bro. Did Tom make you do anything you didn’t want?”
Jake stepped inside, closing the door behind him. “No! God, no. I wanted it. I started it, if anything. I really like Tom, Ryan. He means something to me. He’s kind, and he makes me feel… seen. Happy.”
Tom reached out, squeezing Jake’s hand gently, a silent show of support. Jake squeezed back, his fingers trembling slightly.
Tom turned back to Ryan, voice steady despite the knot in his stomach. “Neither of us meant for this to happen, mate. We didn’t expect it least of all me. I’ve always been straight, or thought I was. But Jake… he’s incredible. I’m not just messing around or taking advantage. I like him, Ry. A lot. I want to explore where this could go. I’m hoping you can… I don’t know, give us a chance. Allow it to happen without hating me.”
Ryan’s face was red, fists clenched at his sides. He stared between them for a long moment, breathing hard. Then he pointed at Tom. “Get out. I need to talk to Jake alone.”
Tom hesitated, glancing at Jake, who nodded reassuringly. “It’s okay,” Jake whispered. Tom stood, giving Jake’s hand one last squeeze before slipping out and closing the door behind him. He leaned against the wall in the hallway, heart pounding, straining to hear the muffled voices inside.
Inside the room, Ryan sat back down, gesturing for Jake to join him. “Alright, bro. Truth. Did Tom force anything? Even a little? Be honest I won’t judge you.”
Jake shook his head firmly, sitting beside him. “No, Ryan. It was mutual. Both times. I’ve… I’ve known I’m gay for a while. Didn’t tell you because I was scared. But Tom he’s the first guy I’ve been with. And it feels right.”
Ryan rubbed his temples. “You’re gay? Okay… that’s… we’ll talk about that later. But how do you feel about him? Really? He’s not pressuring you or anything?”
Jake’s eyes softened. “I feel amazing with him. He’s gentle, and fun, and he cares. It’s not just physical. I think… I think it could be something real.”
Ryan sighed deeply, staring at the floor. After a long pause, he stood and opened the door. Tom straightened up immediately, looking anxious.
“Alright, get back in here,” Ryan said gruffly.
Tom stepped inside, hovering awkwardly by the desk. Ryan eyed him for a second, then nodded.
“Alright, man. I don’t love this situation. At all. But I guess you’re both adults, and I’m grateful you told me about it before it went any further though fuck knows how long it’s been going on already.” He pointed a finger at Tom. “But if you hurt my brother, Tom, I’ll fucking kill you. Understand?”
Tom nodded solemnly. “Understood. I swear, Ry I won’t.”
He reached out to shake Ryan’s hand. Ryan took it firmly, then pulled him into a rough hug, clapping him on the back. “You’re still my number one bro. But just don’t fuck him about. He deserves better than that.”
“I won’t, Ryan,” Tom promised, voice thick. “I promise.”
The tension in the room eased just a fraction. Ryan glanced at Jake, who was watching them with wide, relieved eyes. “Right. Now let’s go get dressed and catch that film. And no more secrets, yeah?”
Jake nodded quickly, and Tom managed a small smile. As Ryan headed out, Tom caught Jake’s gaze, giving him a subtle wink that said everything: We did it. Together.
