Messing With Mikey: Still Holding

Push

I showed up just after eleven. The basement light was already on when I came down the stairs. Mikey was sitting on the edge of the mat in an old t-shirt and sweatpants, scrolling through his phone. He looked up when he heard me.

“You’re late,” he said.

“Work.” I dropped my bag by the bench and started unbuttoning my shirt. My hands were already moving too fast, buttons fighting me. “Bad week.”

Mikey watched me for a second. “You look like shit.”

“Thanks.”

I stripped down to my undershirt and boxers and stepped onto the mat without waiting. I didn’t stretch. I didn’t say anything else. I just came straight at him like I was trying to outrun something.

We locked up hard. I was stronger than I used to be — years of running and lifting — but stiff from a desk all week, while Mikey had been training clients all day. Still, I drove into him with a kind of desperate weight, trying to muscle him backward. He absorbed it, then swept my leg and took me down clean.

We rolled. I fought harder than usual, grunting, trying to reverse positions. Every time he got on top, I’d bridge hard and twist out, breathing through my teeth. It wasn’t playful. It was tight and physical and a little ugly.

After a few minutes he pinned me on my back with a forearm across my chest and looked down at me.

“You’re wound up,” he said quietly.

I stared up at the ceiling, chest heaving. “Yeah.”

“You want to go easy tonight?”

I shook my head once. “No.”

Mikey didn’t move. “You sure?”

My jaw worked. I hated saying it out loud. “I need it harder than usual.”

Mikey was quiet for a second. Then he nodded, once.

“All right.”

He shifted his weight and swung his legs up. He went straight for the hold I’d been caught in the most over the years — the plain, heavy headscissors. His thighs slid around my neck, ankles crossing behind my head, and he locked it down.

The pressure came on thick and immediate, right against the sides of my neck. My hands went to his thighs out of habit, fingers digging into the muscle. I didn’t tap. I just lay there and let it settle.

Mikey didn’t talk. He just held it, hips low, one hand resting on my chest. Every so often he’d make a small adjustment, tightening the squeeze for a few seconds, then easing it again so I could breathe. My face was already hot. I could feel my pulse hammering against the inside of his thigh.

“More,” I said after a minute. My voice came out rough.

Mikey looked down at me. “You sure?”

“Yeah.”

He tightened the hold again, slower this time, letting the pressure build until my vision started to narrow at the edges. My fingers dug harder into his leg. My breathing went shallow. For a few seconds the basement got smaller.

Then it happened — quick and involuntary.

For a moment I wasn’t on the navy-blue mat anymore. I was back on the old green gym mats under the harsh fluorescent lights, and I could see them again — Shane, Mark, and Chris walking over from the basketball court, stopping to watch. I could almost hear the low, amazed laughter in their voices as Mikey held me there in front of everyone, completely owned. The humiliation hit me fresh, sharp, and it went straight through me like a current.

Mikey eased the pressure just before it went too far. I sucked in a breath and blinked hard, the old gym fading. My face was burning.

“You went somewhere,” Mikey said quietly.

I didn’t answer right away. My voice came out low. “Yeah.”

Mikey didn’t ask where. He just held the lock a little longer, steady and patient, until my breathing evened out again. Then he uncrossed his ankles and let me go.

I stayed on my back, staring up at the ceiling. My neck was hot. My head felt light and full at the same time.

Mikey rolled onto his back beside me. We lay there for a while without talking.

After a minute I spoke, voice still rough. “I don’t know why I need it this bad sometimes.”

Mikey didn’t say anything.

I let out a short, embarrassed breath. “I’m forty-three years old. I’ve got a job and a mortgage, and I still show up here like this.”

I kept starting at the ceiling.

“I thought I’d grow out of needing this. I never did.”

Mikey was quiet for a long moment. Then he turned his head.

“It hasn’t gone away for me either,” he said.

I looked over at him. Something in my throat tightened. I didn’t trust my voice yet, so I just held his eyes.

Mikey’s voice stayed low. “I like giving it to you. I like that you trust me with it. And after all these years you still come here when you’re fucked up and let me put you on the mat until you can breathe again. It matters to me. More than you probably know.”

I swallowed. My throat felt tight.

Mikey reached over and rested his hand on my chest, right over my heartbeat.

“You don’t have to be embarrassed about needing it,” he said. “Not with me.”

I closed my eyes. The heat in my face was still there, but something in my chest had loosened.

We lay there until the basement felt quiet again. Eventually Mikey sat up with a small grunt and looked down at me.

“You good?”

I nodded. “Yeah.”

Mikey stood up and offered me his hand. I took it. He pulled me to my feet, steady and familiar.

We didn’t say anything else. We just stood there for a second on the mat, two middle-aged men who had known each other since they were kids, breathing in the same room.

Upstairs, the house was dark and quiet. Everyone else was asleep.

I grabbed my shirt off the bench and started getting dressed. My neck was still warm where Mikey’s legs had been.

I didn’t feel fixed. Not completely.

But I felt like myself again.
