Going Home

A little recap before we get into the next chapter. The story is about two main characters, AJ Nelson and Ty Baker. Each chapter is written from either AJ's or Ty's point of view. They both grew up in small rural towns in the Midwest and have navigated their way through childhood and high school. AJ is attending State College and Ty is at the University, they yet to meet each and are both dealing with all the new challenges life sends them. AJ is still in denial about his sexuality, while Ty has come out to his family and close friends. The events are taking place at the same as each tell their storied, AJ in the number chapters and Ty in the even. I hope I haven't made this more confusing. Jake and I had settled into our college routine. Classes were going well, and we both had gotten part-time jobs. Jake was working at Target unloading trucks and stocking shelves and I was at Lowes, getting loads of lumber ready to go out to contractors. The girls had also taken jobs at the campus daycare. So, between classes, work and the four of us hanging out we were busy, and time was going by quickly.

It was soon time for Thanksgiving break, as Jake and the girls were planning their trip back home, I got a call from mom. She told me that she and dad were going to go to Arizona to spend the holiday with my dad’s sister and her husband. My sister would be with her husband’s family and my brother was still overseas with the army. I started to get that old “I am all alone again” feeling, as Jake came back from class, he noticed me sitting there deep in thought.

“Hey bud what’s the matter?”

“Oh hey, nothing I just talked to my parents, they are going out of town for Thanksgiving.”

“Well, are you going with them?”

“No, I will just stay here, I can get a start on that term paper I have due at the end of the semester.”

Jake left the room for a few minutes and as he walked back in, my phone rang.

“Hello.” I didn’t recognize the number.

“AJ, this Carla, Jake’s mom, you are going to come to our house with Jake for thanksgiving.”

“Oh no Mrs. McMillan, I will be fine I don’t want to be a bother.”

“You won’t be a bother at all, I am already cooking for twenty people, one more will not be a problem.”

“Well, I….”

She cut me off and said, “You are coming and that is final, if you are not in Jake’s car when he gets here, I will drive down and pick you up myself.”

I glared at Jake and said, “yes mam.”

“Good, we will see you Wednesday night.”

“Thank you, I am looking forward to meeting you.”

Jake started to snicker and said, “who was that.” Breaking into a full laugh.

I shook my head, you know exactly who that was, you asshole, you had to run to your mommy and tell on me.”

“Well, I couldn’t just let you sit here by yourself, could I? and you would never have agreed if I asked you. I knew mom would convince you.”

We told Sky and Jen the change of plans as Sky said, “I can’t believe you parents would just leave you out their plans like that.”

I said, “I told you that they never really wanted me, I am surprised she called me to say they weren’t going to be home.”

Jen said, “they can’t be that bad, are they.”

“Well, I guess not, but it sure felt like it sometimes.

We finished our classes for the week and by 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon we were on our way to Appleton. We pulled into town a little after 6 and took a little tour down Main Street, Jake and the girls giving me all the highlights.

I said, “This is a lot like Fairview, I can’t wait until I am done with school so I can move out of that city and back to a town like this.”

Jake said, “oh we will get you to like city and after school you will begging to stay.”

“I don’t think that will ever happen.” As we pulled into the McMillan driveway. We grabbed our bags and headed for the front door.

Jake’s mom met us at the door, Sky and Jen went in first and were immediately buried in hugs. Jake looked back at me, and I should tell you, mom is a hugger, as he was pulled into her arms. Carla let go of Jake after she gave him a kiss on the cheek.

She held her arms out toward me and said, “you must be AJ.” And gave me a big squeeze.

Once she let me go Jake said, “Mom, Dad this is AJ.”

Jake’s dad, Larry held out his hand, “Nice to meet you, what does AJ stand for?”

Jake jumped in, “we haven’t figured it out yet, he will let us know when we get it right.”

Just as Larry was going to ask more questions, the front door swung open, and Jake lunged for the young man walking in. He threw is arm around his neck putting his victim into a headlock, “hey butt head how the hell are you?”

The youngster maneuvered out of the headlock and pulled Jake’s arms behind his back saying, “better than you are wimpy.”

Carla said, “alright you two knot heads that’s enough.” As she headed for the kitchen.

They released each and exchanged a hug, “Good to see you little brother. AJ this is my kid brother Josh. Josh this is AJ.”

I stuck my hand, “nice to meet you.”

Josh said, “nice to meet you too, sorry you have to live with this ass.”

“Hey, you two watch the language,” came from the kitchen.

I could see the family resemblance right away. They had the same eyes and chin, Josh was just a little shorter and leaner, but they were definitely brothers.

Carla yelled out dinner is ready, everybody to the table. We all sat and ate the best meal that I had eaten since I can’t remember when. Jake’s parents filled him and the girls in on all the news that taken place since August. Who was getting married, who was getting divorced, who having a baby what ever anybody else had done in the last four months. We finished eating, Jake said, “AJ and I are going to take the girls home, we will back in a little while. We dropped them off and I was introduced to two more sets of parents. After another trip up and down Main Street we talked to a couple of Jake’s friends and headed back to his house. We sat and talked with Jake’s parents and brother as his mom prepared food for the next day. Jake showed me to the guest room, and said he was in the next room if I needed anything, you will get to meet the rest of this crazy clan tomorrow, sleep well.

We got up the next morning and Jake’s mom put us to work setting up tables and chairs and getting ready for the rest of the family to arrive. By noon I was getting introduced to aunts, uncles and cousins and was trying hard to remember all their names, who was married to who and what kids belonged to which parents. The rest of the day was spent playing cards and watching football games. As everybody was starting to wind down, Jake tapped my shoulder and said, “I need a little break, how about you?”

He led down to the family room in the basement, where we found Josh and two of their cousins who the about the same age as us. We all talked about how school was going for each of us, and Jake and Josh caught up on family from their cousins. A short time later everyone started to leave, and we all helped put the house back in order.

We spent the rest of the weekend getting together with Jake, Sky and Jen’s friends, by the time Sunday rolled around I was ready to head back to school. We packed up said our goodbyes, Carla told, “you are welcome anytime.” I thanked her and as we left, I walked over and gave her a big hug. We picked up the girls and made our way back to the dorm.

After the Thanksgiving break, we all got back to work and classes, finals would be starting in two weeks, then Christmas break.

Mom called to tell me that my brother was back in the states and would be home for Christmas. I said, “that’s great, I am looking forward to seeing him again, it’s been more than five years.”

I finished my finals, then worked for the next couple of days. I planned to drive home on Christmas Eve, I packed and was on the road by noon. I walked into the house about two and a half hours later, “Mom, dad I’m home.”

Mom came around the corner, “hi AJ glad you are home.” I followed her into the living room half disappointed that I didn’t get a hug like I did at Jake’s. I then saw my brother sitting in the chair next to my dad.

“Hey little brother, damn I guess I have been gone longer than I thought, shit you grew up.”

“Yeah, I guess so, it’s been over five years.”

“Has it been that long?”

“Yep.”

“Well anyway, like I was saying dad….”

I sat down and started to think about Jake and his brother, realizing I would never have the same relationship with my brother. I spent the rest of the day listening to my dad and brother talk about all the adventures he had while he was overseas.

The next day was Christmas, my sister and her family was coming for dinner. I was helping mom set the table as my sister walked in yelling at my niece and nephew. “Take off your shoes you want to track snow all over the floor. Mom, Tom is not coming he has a sick cow he is taking care of, oh hi AJ” as she gave me a quick glance. Tom was my sister’s husband and I think he had only attended one family get together in the six years they had been married. He always had some emergency to take care of.

“Diner is ready, everyone sit down” said mom. My sister went over to my brother, “wow you look good” as she gave a hug. I wondered why I even bothered to come home. My sister fixed a plate for kids and sat down as we started passing the food around the table.

Just as we all had started eating dad said, “well kids, your mom and I have an announcement, we are selling the house and moving to Arizona.”

I just stared at him, not sure what to say or do. My sister broke the silence, “well that is great, you guys will really like it there.”

Mom said, “we think so too. We made all the arrangements when were down there over Thanksgiving.  We already have jobs, your dad is going to be the maintenance man at a retirement community and I will working in the office. We even get to live in one of the condos for free.”

My brother said, “well that is great, I hope you enjoy it there.”

They all started talking about the move and great it was going to be. I just sat back and picked at my food. I pushed my plate away and said, “I am going to see if Zach is around, I haven’t seen since I have been home.”

Dad said, “ok son, see you later.”

I knew Zach would be with his family and I wasn’t going to bother him, so I just went for a drive. I decided that I was going to leave as soon as possible, I thought it would be best to wait until morning. When I got home a couple of hours later, my sister had already left, my dad and brother were napping in the living room. Mom said, “we are leaving right after the first of the year, so if there is anything from your room that you want you should probably take it with you when you leave.”

“Sure mom, I think I am going to head back tomorrow, my boss said I could work for the rest of Christmas break, and I could use the money.”

I went to my room, started to look around and deciding what I wanted to take back with me. I packed what few clothes that I had left in my dresser and closet, then gathered up a few of my high school mementos. I sat on the bed just trying to process the whole day, I tossed and turned all night. I was out of bed by six and throwing my things into my truck, as I walked back into the house dad was making a pot of coffee.

“What are you doing up already?”

I said, “I am going to head back today and wanted to get an early start.”

“I see.”

“I can work during break, and I could always use the money.”

“Sounds good son.”

I grabbed my last bag and told dad, “Tell everyone bye for me.”

“Will do, drive safe.”

I drove the whole trip wishing that I went home with Jake instead of going to see my own family. I got to my room threw my bag on the floor and falling onto my bed and slept until about six that night. I got up and made myself a sandwich and then went back to bed. The next morning, I would talk to my boss to see he would let me work the rest of my break.

My boss was happy to let me work as many hours as I wanted, with all the college kids gone for holidays he could use all the help he could get. He asked why I was back early, I just told him that my plans had been changed and I would be in the morning.

I spent the next two weeks working and playing my Xbox. The dorms were mostly empty, so it was nice and quiet. I made to the end of the second week, classes were going to start on the following Monday, and Jake and the girls would be back tomorrow. I finished up at work, went through the McDonald’s drive thru and headed back to my room. I opened the door to find Jake, Sky and Jen watching tv, laughing and teasing each other. They turned to see me walk in and Jake said, “hey bud, you decided to come back early too.”

“Well, I guess so, about two weeks ago. I just got off work.”

Sky said, “Why did you come back so early?”

“it’s a long story, but I wish I would have gone home with you guys when you asked. I am sure it would have been a lot more fun.”

Jen looking at me and said, “You look upset, what happened?”

I sat down, took a dep breath and told them the whole story.

Jake said, “dude that sucks, you should have come to my house instead of sitting here by yourself.”

I just shrugged, stood up and threw my food bag into the trash. Jake got up, walked toward me and gave me a big hug. Then Jen and Sky did the same as they were tearing up.

I said, “hey, enough of this sad shit, tell me how are all of your families doing, what did you guys do when you were home?”

Jake said, “oh my god, dude my mom was asking about you before she even told me hello. She was telling all the other relatives how great you are. Hell, even Josh was asking about you.”

The room shifted to a much lighter mood as we began laugh and joke. After Jake made a joke at my expense, I told him was just jealous that I was now his mom’s favorite.

We started classes the next week and got back into our routine of school, working and hanging out.

A few weeks later I was working until nine one Friday night, I got back to the dorm and started to walk into my room. I said, “sounds good.” As she pulled the bag from the microwave, and we sat down on her bed. Jen selected some romcom I had never heard of, and I wasn’t really paying attention anyway, I still was seeing Jake’s ass.

“That is same as me and Cory, he joined the Navy and left right after graduation.”

“Rachel went to college out of state, so we decided it would be best not to do the whole long-distance thing.”

Just as we were snuggling in, my phone dinged, it was a text from Jake, “If it is ok with you, Sky wants to stay over do you have a place to stay?”

I showed Jen the text, she giggled as I text back, “I’m good.”

No sooner than I hit send, Jen got a message from Sky, “staying with Jake, see you in the morning.”

We laughed, crawled under the covers and went to sleep.

We woke the next morning, I got dressed, kissed Jen goodbye and headed to my room. I met Sky in the hall and couldn’t resist teasing her a little.

I put on a grin and said, “hey Sky did you have a nice night”? as I held back a chuckle.

She turned red, “yes I did, you asshole,” as she slapped my ass as I walked by.

I walked in my room as Jake was pulling on his shirt, “sorry man, if I had known you were busy last night, I would never have walked in you.”

Jake laughed, “no problem, maybe we need a signal if we want the room to ourselves, my dad always told me that he and his room would hang a sock on the doorknob.

“Well, that would let the whole dorm know what was going on.”

He said, “well thanks for letting Sky stay the night, where did you end up by the way?”

I thought a few seconds and said, “well I guess I might as well tell you before Sky does, I spent the night with Jen.”

Jake’s mouth dropped open, “are you kidding me?”

“Nope, I couldn’t think of any place else to go, we were laying on the bed watching a movie, our hands started to roam, and by the time you text to ask if Sky could stay over were already naked basking in afterglow.”

“Holy shit, that is so funny, when we got up this morning, Sky said, wouldn’t it be funny if AJ and Jen spent the night together? I just laughed at her and said I would believe it when I see it.”

He reached over and gave me a fist bump, his phoned beeped. Jake said, “It’s Sky.”

I said, “well the secret is out, I am going to take a shower.”

The next week as I was walking home from a night class, I got a text from Jake with no words, just a sock emoji. I text Jen, “I will be over in about five min.” When I got to room, I showed her text and explained the conversation that Jake and I had the week before. We all used the sock emoji for the rest of our college years.
