The Sling
Soren released the last of the wrist restraints and stepped back. Viktor stayed close, one hand at Dominic's shoulder, and Dominic stood between them in the low light, still marked from what the cross had just taken out of him, still catching his breath.
"Ready for what's next?" Viktor had asked, and Dominic had looked at the fuck bench waiting in its own pool of light across the room and said yes without hesitating.
Soren's hand found his back now, guiding him off the platform and across the stone floor. Dominic went with it. He wasn't fully walking so much as being walked, his legs worked, but the part of him that usually decided where they went had gone quiet somewhere on the cross, and hadn't come back yet.
The fuck bench was lower than it looked in the light.
Soren guided him to it with his hand at Dominic’s back, the first time Soren had touched him directly, and the touch felt the same as everything else about him, purposeful, without excess. Dominic let himself be positioned. He was still in the state the flogging had produced, still at that distance from everything he normally carried, and the movement from the cross to the bench felt less like walking and more like being conducted, his body simply following direction.
The bench was padded leather across the center, angled slightly, designed so that a man bent over it had his torso supported and his hips elevated, everything below the waist exposed and accessible. Soren bent him over it and Dominic felt the cool leather against his chest and stomach and let his weight drop into it.
The restraints went on differently here. His wrists were pulled forward and down, secured to the front legs of the bench close to the floor, arms extended, no leverage, no way to push himself up. His ankles were pulled wide and secured to the rear legs, spreading him more open than the cross had. The cross displayed him. The bench exposed him. Every part of him that could be accessed was accessible.
He felt it immediately. The erotic vulnerability of being fully open, the cool air of the room reaching places it hadn’t before. He was aware of his balls hanging free, his cock pressing against the edge of the bench, his hole exposed to whatever the room intended.
“Different,” Viktor said. He was crouching beside Dominic’s face, the pale eyes level with his. “Tell me what you feel.”
“Naked in a way I’ve never felt before,” Dominic said.
“Good,” Viktor said. “That’s where we want you.”
Soren began with the crop.
Not the gentle opening of the first flogger, this was direct from the start, the sharp snap of leather against the back of Dominic’s right thigh, just below the glute. A single precise stroke that landed and was gone and left behind a line of fire that announced itself clearly and stayed.
Dominic pulled against the wrist restraints. Nowhere to go.
“The hamstrings,” Soren said, to Viktor rather than to Dominic, in the tone of a professional narrating a procedure. “The sensitivity here is considerably higher than the back. The nervous system is closer to the surface.”
The crop landed on the left thigh. Same location, same precision. Same line of fire.
“He’ll feel this differently,” Soren said. “The pain is sharper. More localized. Less diffuse than the flogging.”
He was right. It was entirely different. The flogging had been broad, cumulative, a rising heat that had built across his back over many strokes. This was targeted, immediate, the body unable to spread or absorb it, each stroke a discrete event that arrived complete and stayed precisely where it landed.
The crop moved down. Inner thighs now, dangerously close to his taint and balls. The skin there thin and responsive in a way the back wasn’t, each stroke producing a sound from Dominic that he couldn’t prevent. Viktor watched his face throughout, reading him the way he always read him, present and precise.
“This is different from the back,” Viktor said, to Dominic now. “You feel why?”
“Yes,” Dominic managed.
“Tell me.”
“It’s… closer,” Dominic said. He didn’t have more precise language than that. “It’s closer to everything.”
“Yes,” Viktor said. “The body knows what’s near. The nervous system connects everything in this territory.” He put his hand on the back of Dominic’s neck, warm, still. “Your body is preparing for what’s coming. Even now. You feel that too.”
Dominic felt it. The crop striking his inner thighs and his cock responding to each stroke with the insistent, involuntary arousal that had been his companion all evening. The pain and the want now indistinguishable, his body having dissolved the border between them somewhere on the cross.
“Yes,” he said.
Soren moved to the glutes.
He used a different crop here, wider, a leather slapper rather than a riding crop, covering more surface with each stroke but carrying more impact. The first stroke landed across Dominic’s right cheek and he heard himself scream with pain, the sound loud in the stone room, and didn’t try to stop it.
“Loud is fine,” Viktor said. Still beside his face. “There’s no one to hear you. Let it out.”
Dominic let it out.
The slapper continued across his glutes with a rhythm that was faster than Soren’s earlier work, more insistent, more grueling. Each stroke drove Dominic’s hips forward against the bench, his erect cock pressing into the leather with each impact and pulling back, the involuntary friction of it building alongside the pain in a way that was becoming difficult to manage.
“Viktor,” Dominic said, his head motioning to his mid-section.
“I know,” Viktor said. He could read the situation without being told. “Not yet. Hold on to it.”
Dominic held on to it. He pressed his forehead against the bench and breathed and let the slapper do what it was doing and held everything else in place by an act of will that was becoming increasingly narrow.
“What you’re feeling right now,” Viktor said, his voice close to Dominic’s ear, “is the point. The body at its limit. The mind with nothing left to manage. This is the state. This is what I wanted to give you.”
A stroke. Dominic’s hips drove forward.
“Everything you’ve been carrying,” Viktor continued. “The guilt. The loss. The things you hold that have no resolution. In this moment, none of it exists. There is only your body and what it feels and my voice and my hands.” He placed his hand flat on Dominic’s lower back, steadying him. “That is not a small gift. That is everything.”
Dominic was crying again. He hadn’t noticed when it started.
Soren set down the slapper.
The room went quiet except for Dominic’s breathing which was ragged and uneven and coming from somewhere below his chest. He lay against the bench felt the entirety of his skin, the sustained warmth of his back from the flogging, the sharper, lingering fire of his thighs and glutes from the crop, his cock aching against the bench, his hole open to the room.
He heard Viktor move. Not beside him, behind him.
Viktor crouched. His hands came to Dominic’s glutes, both of them, warm and deliberate, and he spread them gently. Not roughly, not with the brutal efficiency of Mikhail and Gregor on Labor Day weekend, the memory arrived briefly and was gone, replaced immediately by the reality of Viktor’s hands, which were entirely different, which had always been entirely different.
“This is the last preparation,” Viktor said quietly, from behind him. “Before the sling. I need you ready.”
Dominic understood.
Viktor produced lube, Dominic heard the familiar sound of it, and what followed was Viktor’s unhurried, deliberate attention to the one part of Dominic that everything this evening had been building toward. His fingers, warm and slick, working slowly, fully understanding that this was not a step to be rushed. One finger, then two. He knew exactly what he was doing and why it mattered.
Dominic pressed back against it. His body had been waiting for this without his having known it, and the sensation of Viktor’s fingers finding him here, after everything the evening had already been, produced a sound from him that was entirely different from the sounds the pain had produced, lower, more open, something that came from the center rather than the surface.
“There,” Viktor said. Quiet. Satisfied.
“Daddy,” Dominic whispered. His voice barely worked.
“I know,” Viktor said. “Not yet. One more thing first.”
His free hand found Dominic’s cock, hanging full and aching beneath the bench. He wrapped his fingers around it and held it, not stroking, just holding, the warmth of his hand encompassing it entirely.
“Feel that,” Viktor said. “Everything at once. The pain behind you. My hand on you. What’s coming.”
Dominic felt it. All of it simultaneously, the residual fire of the evening and Viktor’s fingers and Viktor’s hand on Dominic’s body that had been taken to its limit and was now suspended at the edge of something he had no previous experience of.
“Please, please Daddy,” Dominic said. He hadn’t planned to say it. It arrived complete.
“Soon,” Viktor said. He withdrew his hand from Dominic’s cock. His fingers stilled. He stood.
Dominic heard him speak to Soren in a low voice. The restraints began to come off, ankles first, then wrists, and Viktor’s hands were there immediately, steadying him as he stood, the bench having held his weight for long enough that standing required relearning.
Viktor turned him to face the room.
The sling hung in its pool of light in the far corner, the four chains suspending it at waist height, still and waiting. It was the last thing Dominic had noticed when he entered the room at nine o’clock and the last thing he had allowed himself to think about.
He thought about it now.
Soren walked to the door of the dungeon. He stopped at the threshold and looked back at Dominic.
“Well done,” he said. Simply. The professional closing his portion of the evening.
Then he left. The door closed.
The room held Viktor and Dominic and the sling in its light and nothing else.
Viktor looked at him. The pale eyes. The real expression.
“Just us now,” he said.
Dominic looked at the sling.
“Take me, Daddy,” he said.
Viktor walked him to the sling.
Not quickly. He kept his hand at Dominic’s back and moved him toward the sling. Dominic walked beside him across the stone floor, not entirely sure of his own legs.
The sling was leather, dark, worn, suspended from four chains at the corners that hung from ceiling rings and positioned the seat at exactly waist height. Viktor steadied it with one hand and guided Dominic into it with the other, and Dominic lowered himself into the leather seat and felt it receive his weight and understood immediately that this was unlike either of the other two apparatuses.
The cross had spread him open. The bench had exposed him. The sling held him.
His weight was entirely supported by the leather and the chains. He had nothing to brace against, nothing to push from, no surface beneath him that his body could use to assert itself. He was simply suspended, legs falling open naturally with the sling’s geometry, ass hanging over the rear edge and fully accessible, head tipping back over the front edge so that his throat was exposed and the room above him was upside down.
Viktor attached the restraints. Wrists to the upper chains, ankles to the lower, the familiar leather cuffs securing him with the same deliberate care he had brought to the cross hours earlier. When it was done Dominic tested the range of movement and found it less than either previous position, the sling’s design distributed his weight in a way that made resistance meaningless. He was not fighting anything. He was simply held.
He loved it.
The realization arrived without apology. He was suspended in a leather sling in a Palm Springs dungeon near midnight with his wrists and ankles restrained and his hole exposed to the room and the man who kidnapped him standing between his spread legs looking at him, and he loved it. Not despite what it was. Because of what it was. Because of what it meant about who he was and what he had spent twenty-four years not knowing about himself.
Viktor looked at him for a long moment.
“You,” he said. Just the word. Then: “Do you have any idea what you look like right now?”
“No,” Dominic said.
“Like exactly who you are,” Viktor said. “For the first time, with nothing in the way.” He put his hand flat on Dominic’s chest, over his heart. “I have been waiting to see this since June. Since the first afternoon. This is what I knew was in there.
The sling held him open in a way nothing before it had, hips angled up, thighs spread wide over the straps, every part of him on display with nowhere left to angle himself away from view. Viktor stood at the foot of it and simply looked, the way he'd looked at Dominic after he stripped, except there was no loincloth now, nothing left to interrupt the view. Dark hair covered him everywhere it occurred naturally, forearms, chest, the thick trail below his navel, nothing trimmed, nothing smoothed, nothing arranged for anyone's benefit, leading down to a cock already thick and rising under Viktor's gaze alone, filling out inch by inch until it stood fully erect against his stomach, heavy and flushed dark at the head, resting above a pair of full, low-hanging balls, all of it as unshaved and unapologetic as the man it belonged to. His shoulders were wide from actual labor, decades of it, not gym mirrors. His thighs were the thighs of a man who'd spent his life on his knees under trucks and up ladders, not on a machine counting reps. He didn't look like the men who came through this room before him, polished, hairless, built for the light. He looked like something that had wandered in from outside it entirely, raw and overwhelming and entirely unaware of what he was. Viktor's breath left him slowly, like a man setting down something he'd been holding too tightly for too long.
Viktor's eyes moved to the erection last, lingered there longer than anywhere else, and something in his composure genuinely slipped, a sharp breath in through his nose, his own cock straining visibly, a man who had built his entire life around never looking this hungry in front of anyone and had just, for one unguarded second, failed completely.
Dominic looked up at him from the sling, his head tipped back, entirely at Viktor’s mercy, and felt the truth of it land. This was who he was. Not a kidnap victim. Not a reluctant participant. Not a man being managed or maneuvered. A man who had arrived, finally and completely, at himself.
“What happens now,” Dominic said.
You," he said. Just the word.
Viktor moved to the side table.
He took his time with the lube, coating both hands thoroughly, and crouched between Dominic’s suspended legs. His hands came to Dominic’s hole with the same deliberate, unhurried attention he had brought to the preparation at the bench, spreading, massaging, the familiar fingers working with a patience that Dominic had learned to read as Viktor at his most focused.
“Relax,” Viktor said. “You know how.”
Dominic relaxed.
Then Viktor reached for something on the side table that Dominic couldn’t see from his angle in the sling. He felt it at his hole before he understood what it was, smooth, firm, and then a resistance as it pressed against him that built steadily until the widest point arrived and he felt the stretch go to the edge of what he could take and his breath left him entirely and then, with a sensation that traveled the full length of his spine, it passed the widest point and seated itself inside him, held there by its narrower base.
He lay in the sling and breathed and felt it there. Full in a way that was different from Viktor’s cock, wider at the point of maximum sensation, lodged firmly, unmovable, pressing against everything it was designed to press against.
“Ready,” Viktor said. Not a question.
And then he turned it on.
The motion was slow at first, a gentle undulation that Dominic felt as a rolling pressure against his prostate, not the sharp targeted contact of Viktor’s fingers but something sustained, rhythmic, continuous. He heard himself make a sound that started as surprise and became something else entirely before it finished.
“Oh,” he said. And then: “Oh god.”
“I know,” Viktor said. He was standing now, between Dominic’s legs, watching his face with the pale eyes and the expression that contained everything. “That’s your prostate. We’ve visited it before. But not like this.”
Dominic couldn’t respond. The massager was doing what it was doing and his nervous system was fully occupied with the fact of it.
Viktor moved to his chest.
His hands came to Dominic’s nipples, both of them, and he began to work them with his thumbs, the circular, precise pressure he had learned Dominic responded to, building gradually, the familiar sensation layering over the massager’s continuous work below.
“You’ve done extraordinary things tonight,” Viktor said. His voice was low, close. “The cross. The bench. Everything I asked of you. You chose all of it and you endured all of it and you are still here.” He pressed harder with his thumbs and Dominic arched in the sling. “But there is one more thing. And it is important. Do you understand why?”
“No,” Dominic said honestly.
“Because,” Viktor said, “pain and pleasure are not opposites. They are not two separate things that occasionally intersect. They are the same thing, experienced from different angles. What you feel tonight, what you have felt all evening, is evidence of that. Your body already knows it. I am going to make sure your mind knows it too.”
He reached for the side table.
The nipple clamps were small, steel, connected by a chain. Viktor held them where Dominic could see them.
“The pain will be sharp,” Viktor said. “It will pass. And what’s on the other side of it is something you haven’t felt yet.”
He placed the first clamp.
The sensation was immediate and total, a sharp, biting pressure on his left nipple that overrode everything else in his nervous system for several seconds. Dominic cried out, the sound loud in the stone room, and pulled against the wrist restraints.
“Breathe through it,” Viktor said. His hand on Dominic’s face, warm, anchoring. “Stay with me. Breathe.”
Dominic breathed. The pain from the clamp was still there, it did not diminish exactly, but it changed quality as his nervous system processed it, the sharp bite settling into a sustained, insistent pressure that occupied the same channels as the massager’s work below and, impossibly, began to merge with it.
“The second one,” Viktor said. “Same breath.”
The second clamp went on and Dominic screamed, there was no other word for the sound, and Viktor’s hand stroked his face and his neck and his chest with the tenderness of a man who is holding something precious.
“I have you,” Viktor said. “You’re safe. Breathe. Let it settle.”
It settled.
What settled with it was the thing Viktor had described. The pain from both clamps, sustained, present, impossible to ignore, and the massager’s continuous work below, and his cock fully erect and untouched between them, and Viktor’s hands moving over his skin with the warmth of complete, total attention. All of it present simultaneously. All of it his body’s to receive.
“Do you feel it?” Viktor said.
“Yes,” Dominic croaked. He didn’t have more precise language than that.
“Pain and pleasure,” Viktor said. “The same signal. The same nerve endings. The same body. One makes the other more.” He reached for the chain connecting the clamps and tugged it, once, lightly, and the sensation from both nipples flared and ran directly to Dominic’s cock without stopping anywhere in between. “You feel that connection?”
Dominic felt it. He felt it so completely that the word ‘yes’ was inadequate and he didn’t say anything at all.
“More?” Viktor said. He was holding the remote for the massager.
“Yes,” Dominic begged quietly.
Viktor turned it up.
The undulation deepened, more insistent, the pressure against his prostate more sustained, and Dominic felt his hips begin to move in the sling without his having decided to move them, the body responding to the stimulus with the animal directness it had been demonstrating all evening. He was thrusting into the air above the sling, seeking friction his cock wasn’t going to find, his whole pelvis involved in the motion.
At the same time Viktor pulled the chain.
Not hard. Precisely. The tug sending its signal from both nipples simultaneously down into the same system that the massager was working, and the combined input was something Dominic had no previous point of reference for, two streams of sensation converging, the pain sharp and the pleasure deep and his body unable to treat them as separate events.
“Viktor,” he gasped.
“I know,” Viktor said. He turned the massager up another increment.
Dominic’s sounds had stopped being words. He was making noise continuously, the sounds the body makes when it has been taken past the point where language lives, and Viktor moved his free hand over Dominic’s chest and stomach and thighs. He was in adoration of what he had in front of him and wanted Dominic to feel that alongside everything else.
“Look at you,” Viktor said. His voice rough now, the composure wearing at the edges in the way it did when Viktor was close to his own limit. “You’re dripping. You know that? Your cock is covered. You’re absolutely soaked with it.”
Dominic looked down and saw what Viktor was describing and the sight of it, his own cock in this state, in this sling, after this evening, produced a sound from him that was pure and total.
“That’s mine,” Viktor said. “Everything you feel right now is mine. Because you gave it to me. Do you understand that?”
“Yes,” Dominic said. “Daddy. Yes.”
Viktor turned the massager off.
The silence that followed the massager’s cessation was the loudest thing Dominic had experienced all evening.
He lay in the sling and felt the absence of it, the prostate that had been continuously stimulated now suddenly unattended, the body registering the loss as an aching emptiness.
Viktor’s hands came to the toy. He withdrew it slowly, with the same care he brought to everything, and the sensation of it leaving was its own experience, the stretch reversing, and when it was gone Dominic felt hollowed out and desperate in a way that was entirely new.
“Viktor,” he said.
“Here,” Viktor said.
He heard the lube. He heard Viktor preparing himself. He felt Viktor step between his suspended legs, felt the warmth of him at his hole, and understood that everything the evening had been preparation for this moment, the cross and the bench and the massager and the clamps, all of it narrowing to this point.
“Pain and pleasure,” Viktor said. His voice at the edge of control. “Together. That’s what this is. Don’t separate them.”
He pushed in.
The entry was not gentle, Viktor had waited too long and wanted too completely for gentle, and the stretch of him arriving alongside the sustained sensitivity of Dominic’s nipples in the clamps produced a compound sensation that was beyond Dominic’s ability to categorize. He felt Viktor’s cock and he felt the clamps and he felt the ache of the evening’s accumulated work and he felt Viktor’s hands gripping the sling’s chains for leverage and all of it was the same thing, received through the same body, indistinguishable.
“Feel that,” Viktor said. “Both at once. Don’t choose.”
He pulled the chain.
Dominic’s back arched in the sling, or tried to, the restraints held him in place and the inability to arch fully sent the sensation somewhere else, deeper, and he made a sound that Viktor answered with a thrust that matched it.
They found the rhythm. Viktor moving in the sling with the full depth that the apparatus allowed, complete access, complete control, and his hand on the chain between the clamps, the tug timed to each thrust so that the two signals arrived together, and Dominic in the sling receiving all of it with his whole body, the tears from earlier gone, the sounds continuous, the part of his mind that managed and evaluated and carried things entirely absent.
“You’re close,” Viktor said. It wasn’t a question.
“Yes,” Dominic managed.
“Wait for me,” Viktor said. His voice stripped to its essentials. “We go together.”
His hand found Dominic’s cock. Wrapped around the full length of it, slick with everything that had accumulated, and began to stroke, long, deliberate, matched to the thrust, matched to the tug of the chain, all three stimuli—his cock, his prostate and his nipples—arriving in the same rhythm, the same beat, Viktor conducting the whole of Dominic’s nervous system with the precision of a man who had studied him for eight months and knew exactly what he had.
“Now,” Viktor said.
Dominic felt Viktor’s whole body change, the moment of no return, and his own body answered it without being asked. He came with a force that surprised them both, the first shot clearing his chest entirely and catching him across the throat and jaw, the second across his chest, his body continuing beyond his ability to count or track, Viktor’s cock still moving inside him and Viktor’s hand still moving on him and the clamps still insisting and all of it one continuous, total, overwhelming thing.
Viktor came with a sound that Dominic would remember for a long time. Low and broken and entirely unguarded, the sound of a man who had wanted something for a very long time and was finally, completely, having it.
They stayed where they were for a long moment. Dominic in the sling, Viktor between his legs, both men spent and still and breathing.
Then Viktor’s hands came to the clamps. He removed them with the same care he had applied them with, and the blood rushing back into both nipples hit Dominic like a fresh shock of pain, one he took with his eyes closed and his head tipped back, and a sound came out of him that he'd never heard himself make before.
Viktor took him out of the sling.
It required both of them, Dominic’s legs had no interest in supporting him immediately and, having anticipated this, Viktor held him upright walking him to the center of the room and steadying him there.
Then Viktor stopped abruptly. He looked at Dominic for a moment with an expression Dominic hadn’t seen before, not the authority of the dungeon, nor the warmth of the bedroom, something between the two. The expression of a man who had been waiting for exactly this moment. He reached into the pocket of the leather jacket on the side table and produced a small key.
Dominic looked at it. He understood immediately what it was for.
Viktor crouched. His hands came to the ring that had been on Dominic since Labor Day weekend, six months, through the dungeon and the garage and the gym and Palm Springs and all of it, and he fitted the key to the lock with near ceremonial care.
“I want to tell you something,” Viktor said, from where he was crouched. He didn’t look up. Hyper-aware of the significance of the moment, he worked the lock with focused attention. “This device has been inactive for some time. Since November. Since the first night you told me you loved me.” He paused. “I deactivated it that night. I couldn’t have used it after that. Not on someone I loved. It would have been…” he stopped. “Wrong in a way that the rest of this was not.”
The lock released.
Viktor removed the ring slowly, with both hands, with the same gravity he had used to put the restraints on hours earlier. He held it for a moment, this piece of iron that had been the last remaining symbol of what Dominic was on Labor Day ended and what he had become in the months since, and then he set it on the side table.
He stood. He looked at Dominic.
“You are free to leave,” he said. “You have been free to leave for some time. I want you to know that.”
Dominic stood in the center of the Palm Springs dungeon at midnight, naked, marked by the evening’s work, the ring gone from his body for the first time in six months, and felt the complicated truth of what Viktor had just said settle into him.
Free to leave.
He looked at the door. He looked at Viktor. He thought about Dom Jr. and Randy and Brianna and Harlan Creek and the single-wide and the site fees and the water heater and the version of his life that had existed before a black Suburban pulled up beside him on a dark road outside Rusty’s Bar.
He thought about the garage. The Shelby. The hot tub in Palm Springs and the terrace and the mountains. The sling. Viktor’s hands. The sound Viktor had made when he came moments before.
He thought: I could walk out that door.
He thought: I am not going to walk out that door.
“I know,” Dominic said. “I know I’m free.”
Viktor looked at him.
“That’s the difference,” Dominic said. “Between the beginning and now. At the beginning I was here because I had no choice. Now I’m here because I do.” He held Viktor’s gaze. “That’s what tonight was. That’s what all of it was. I couldn’t choose before. Now I can. And I’m choosing this.”
Viktor was very still.
“What are you saying?” he asked.
Dominic looked at him. The man who had taken everything from him and given him things he hadn’t known existed. The pale eyes in the low light of the dungeon, the real expression, the one that had no management in it at all.
“I’m staying,” Dominic said. Simply. The most honest thing he had ever said.
Viktor crossed the room and put his arms around him and held him, and Dominic felt the iron ring’s absence from his body as a new sensation, lighter, freer, the last restraint gone, and understood that Viktor was right. Pain and pleasure were the same thing. The eight months of captivity and this moment of chosen presence were the same signal, one making the other possible, and he could not have arrived at the second without having been through the first.
He let Viktor hold him for a long moment. He didn’t want to let go.
Then Viktor said, quietly: “Bath.”
“Yes,” Dominic said.
They walked out of the dungeon together.
The bathroom was warm. The tub was full and waiting, the water still steaming, Viktor had drawn it before the evening began, hours ago, before the cross and the bench and the sling and the ring, before Dominic had said I’m staying.
He had drawn it on the hope that Dominic would.
Dominic stood in the doorway and looked at the steaming water and felt the full weight of that land. Not the dungeon, not the key, not the ceremony of the cock ring coming off, this. A man who had arranged a warm bath for someone he wasn’t certain would still be there to use it. A bet placed on hot water and held at temperature for hours while the evening unfolded.
It told him more about Viktor than anything Viktor had ever said.
Viktor stepped into the tub first. He sat with his back against the far end and his legs spread and looked at Dominic.
“Come here,” he said.
Dominic stepped in. Viktor guided him back against his own chest, Dominic’s back to Viktor’s front, and closed his arms and legs around him, encompassing, total, the safety of being held from behind by someone larger than you, which Viktor wasn’t by much but was enough.
The water was exactly right. Dominic lay against Viktor’s chest and felt the heat reach his skin, the back that Soren’s floggers had opened, the thighs and glutes the crop had attended to, the nipples still bright with sensation from the clamps, and felt all of it at once, the warmth receiving the evening’s work with the completeness of something that was designed for exactly this purpose.
He closed his eyes.
Viktor’s arms tightened slightly. Not dramatically. The same gesture he had been making in bed for months, the small, total signal saying, I have you.
They stayed like that for a while. The water moved around them. The bathroom was warm. Dominic’s breathing slowed to something that was nearly sleep.
Viktor spoke quietly, into the top of his head.
“What you experienced tonight,” he said, “is not a metaphor. It’s a truth. Pain and pleasure are not separate. They are two expressions of the same aliveness. The same nerve endings. The same body saying: I am here. I am fully here.”
Dominic listened.
“The most meaningful things in a life contain both,” Viktor continued. “You cannot have the depth of one without the other. You cannot love without the risk of loss. You cannot feel joy without having known its absence. The pleasure is only as large as the pain that makes room for it.”
He paused.
“Think about your own life,” he said. “The pain you’re carrying. Dom Jr. The life you left. The cost of all of this.” His arms tightened even more. “That pain is real. I am not asking you to dismiss it or forget it or stop carrying it. I am asking you to understand that it is the same thing as what you felt tonight when everything else fell away and there was only your body and the present moment and me.” He paused again. “The pain of being away from him and the joy of finding yourself, they are the same signal, Dominic. One did not cancel the other. One made the other possible.”
Dominic lay in the water and felt Viktor’s words settle into the same place the strokes had settled, and the massager, and the clamps, and all of it, the same place that had been waiting all evening to receive something he couldn’t have named before tonight.
“I don’t know how to make them coexist,” he said. His voice came out rough and honest and entirely without defense.
“I know,” Viktor said. “Neither do I. Not yet.” He pressed his mouth briefly to the top of Dominic’s head. “But we figure it out together. That’s what together means.”
Dominic lay in the tub in Viktor’s arms and felt the water and the warmth and the evening behind him and everything that was still unresolved ahead of him and held all of it without trying to resolve it.
He had never felt more fully himself.
He had never felt more afraid of what came next.
Both things were true. He was learning, finally, that neither one had to lose.

Author’s Note: This one asked a lot of all of us, Dominic on the page, you reading it and me at the keyboard. I won't pretend this is close to the end; there's still real ground left to cover, but we're getting close. Two more chapters, and this story finishes the way I always intended it to, not the way it might look right now. I'd rather not say more than that. As always: [email protected].
