Agnes McLaughlin Centre
World Healing Fellowship Compound, Galveston, Texas
The Agnes McLaughlin Centre sat near the heart of the sprawling WHF campus, one of four auditoriums on the grounds that had grown from the modest church Ernest and Agnes had started decades earlier. Tonight the middle-sized hall was filled to its 5,000-seat capacity. Families and young people packed the rows, phones and small LED torches held high every time the house lights dipped. The giant illuminated cross and the bold WHF logo dominated the backdrop, perfectly framed for the cameras that fed the live stream across the ministry’s cable partners and online platforms.
John McLaughlin stood centre stage under the bright lights, a faint sheen of sweat on his brow. His tailored navy suit was immaculate, silver cross pin on one lapel, small American flag on the other. He knew exactly where to plant his feet so the logo stayed in nearly every shot.
“GIVE THE LORD A SHOUT OF PRAISE! HALLELUJAH!”
The crowd answered with a roar that rolled through the auditorium. The band eased the volume as John raised the microphone again, voice steady and practised.
“Tonight we talk about standing firm in a world that has gone mad. A world saturated with lust. A world that celebrates sin and calls it freedom. A world that tells our young people that their bodies are for sale, that their minds are for every passing trend, that purity is outdated and holiness is optional. Look around you—phones full of images that should never be seen, music that glorifies what God calls abomination, culture that mocks the very idea of waiting, of self-control, of a life set apart. More than ever, the young people of America—and the young people of the world—need the light of God. Not a dim little candle they hide under a basket, but a blazing torch that refuses to be snuffed out. The enemy is loud. The culture is aggressive. But the Spirit of the Living God is greater still. He calls this generation to rise up in sanctity, to walk in awakening, to refuse the cheap counterfeit and take hold of the real thing—holy living, pure hearts, and lives that shine so bright the darkness has no choice but to flee!”
The crowd answered with another wave of applause and lifted lights.
John’s tone softened just enough to draw them in. “I want to call up two people onto this stage who are living in this crazy world right now—and choosing, by the grace of God, to stand firm. My son Daniel… and his beautiful girlfriend, Alexandra.”
The auditorium erupted.
Daniel stepped out from the side of the stage, every inch the clean-cut minister’s son the cameras loved. The charcoal button-down shirt fit close across his broad shoulders and chest, sleeves rolled neatly to the forearms, dark jeans and polished boots completing the look. He moved with easy confidence, offering a small wave and a practised smile as the applause washed over him. Alexandra followed a half-step behind, two years younger, elegant in a cream-colored dress that fell just below the knee. Her long dark hair was styled simply beneath a thin headband. She lifted one hand in a modest wave, the picture of quiet composure, and took her place beside him under the lights.
John turned toward them, microphone still in hand, the WHF logo glowing steadily behind the three of them as the cameras tightened in.
Daniel stepped forward and took the microphone from his father’s hand. The lights caught the sharp lines of his face and the easy confidence in his posture. Five thousand people looked up at him, and for a moment the auditorium felt smaller, drawn in by the quiet force of his presence. He could have told them almost anything in that instant and a portion of them would have believed it without question.
“Thank you, Dad.” His voice carried cleanly through the hall, warm and measured. A small, practised smile spread across his face as the crowd cheered. He lifted one hand, palm open, gently settling them. “Man… it’s always an honour and a privilege that God has chosen me to do this and speak to all of you amazing people.”
The applause rose again. He waited it out, then continued.
“Alexandra and I were just talking backstage about how much this generation needs to hear the truth. Not what TikTok says. Not what Hollywood says. Not what some TV channel wants you to believe. But what God says.”
He let his gaze travel slowly across the rows of faces, phones still glowing in the semi-darkness.
“The Bible is clear. In Genesis, God created them male and female. He instituted marriage between one man and one woman. That’s not hate. That’s holy design. The sanctity of God’s order is under attack like never before. They are confusing you. They are confusing your kids. Redefining what God has already defined and calling it ‘love’ when it’s really rebellion.”
The autocue finished its last line. Daniel delivered every word with the same steady conviction the cameras expected. Part of him believed what he was saying. A larger part of him did not. The difference never reached his face.
The crowd answered with a swell of applause and scattered shouts of “Amen!” Hands and lights rose again. Daniel gave a single, modest nod, then turned and offered the microphone to Alexandra, stepping slightly to the side so the cameras could frame her cleanly against the glowing WHF logo.
Alexandra stepped forward with a quiet grace that immediately softened the room. Her shy, demure manner endeared her to the crowd as she accepted the microphone, voice gentle but clear.
“That’s right. As a young woman who loves Jesus, I refuse to be silent while the world tries to lead our generation into confusion. God’s design is beautiful. It’s not fluid. It’s not whatever you feel like today. The sanctity of God means we honour His creation—body, soul, and the family unit He established.”
The auditorium answered with fresh cheers. She reached for Daniel’s hand; he took it without hesitation. The cameras tightened in on the wholesome moment, every angle carefully framed against the glowing cross and WHF logo.
Daniel nodded, reclaiming the microphone with practised ease.
“Exactly. I’ve had young men and women come to me struggling, and I tell them the same thing the Bible tells them: God has a better way. He can deliver you. He can set you free from every lie of the enemy. Romans 1 is clear—when a society exchanges the truth of God for a lie, it leads to all kinds of brokenness.
But we serve a God who restores! We serve a God who says, ‘Come out from among them and be separate!’ So tonight, if you’re here and you’ve been caught up in the lies of this culture, the agenda wars, the confusion—I want you to know there is freedom in Jesus Christ!”
He raised one hand toward the crowd, face intense, fully inhabiting the role of the diligent pastor’s son.
“Church, we will not compromise! We will not bow to Baal! We will stand for the sanctity of God, the sanctity of marriage, and the sanctity of biblical manhood and womanhood! If you agree with that tonight, shout ‘AMEN!’”
The entire auditorium exploded with a unified “AMEN!” and rolling applause. Daniel nodded along, expression serious and almost fiery, feeding off the energy exactly as expected.
John stepped back to the podium, beaming with pride, and laid an arm across Daniel’s shoulders.
“That’s my boy! That’s the mantle passing! Hallelujah!”
The service continued. Daniel remained on stage to the side while the family brought the sermon and the live stream to its close, the cameras still catching every polished, carefully orchestrated moment.
The ceremony finishes about 20 minutes later, with John bringing out some of the other church pastors into the auditorium to deliver blessings and healings to the audience who want them. At the same time, the family stays up on the stage. Daniel and Alexandra stay up there talking as John continues to read one of his father's passages he wrote before starting the World Healing Fellowship. At the same time, Grace gives directions in the control room, sharing important information with her father as the live stream ends.
The family head backstage: Daniel’s mother, Helen, stands in the green room, elegantly dressed in a $400 cream-and-gold ensemble she picked up in New York a few weeks earlier, a smile beaming on her face.
“That was a great service John, The presence of the Lord was thick tonight, I could see and feel the light of god filling the hearts and souls of the audience out there.”
John loosened his tie and took off his suit jacket, grabbing a glass of Lemon Water off the tray on the table in the middle of the room. “Glory to god, We should celebrate this victory, let’s all head over to Canal One for dinner to celebrate; The table is reserved like usual.”
Helen nods her head “Absolutely, Matthew and Sarah will join us there and of course Daniel and Alexandra are going to be there as well, plus Caleb and Grace, Pastors David Rowe and Jack Irwin will be our guests; A family dinner to give thanks and fellowship to the lord. It will be absolutely wonderful”.
Daniel and Alexandra glance at each other.
“Unfortunately, neither of us can make it tonight”, Daniel says as his mother turns her head.
“Sadly not, Mrs McLaughlin”, Alexandra says, as Helen looks disappointed.
Helen looks at Alexandra, who shakes her head gently.
“Oh darling, but you must join us for this. The lord has blessed us so richly tonight, it’s only right that we break bread together as a family along with David and Jack, to give the lord our glory.”
Alexandra’s face showed regret; she never liked saying no to anyone, especially not Helen or the McLaughlin family.
“Unfortunately, Mrs McLaughlin, I have work at the hospital tonight. I’m on the night shift in paediatrics from 9 pm, and I need to change at home before driving to the hospital."
Helen stepped closer, placing both hands on Alexandra’s shoulders with a sense of dramatic tenderness. Helen looked up as if she were looking to God or someone, and smiled.
“Oh my precious Alexandra, You are such an amazing vessel of the Lord’s compassion. A true Florence Nightingale of the faith! May the Lord shine his glorious light upon you tonight in that hospital. Every little child whose life you touch; I pray the healing balm of Gilead flows through your hands. May the Holy Spirit breathe upon them, saving not just their bodies but their eternal souls for the Kingdom of God! You are doing the Lord’s work in the trenches of our world, Sweet girl we cover you in prayer”
The rest of the family in the room join in an “Amen”
Helen then turned her attention to her son, eyebrows raised expectantly.
“What abut you, Daniel? Surely you can join us?”
Daniel shook his head, maintaining his calm and regretful expression.
“I can’t tonight Mom, I’m heading to California tonight, Got some ministry stuff lined up out there and some personal time for some bible study.”
He paused for a moment, then asked casually, as if it was routine and for the McLaughlin’s it was, “Speaking of which… am I taking the Gulfstream, the Challenger, or what?”
John glanced over, no suspicion in the question.
“The Gulfstream is parked up in Houston and ready to go. The pilot is on standby; I think we just need a service attendant. Just let them know when you are heading to the airfield.
Daniel nods “Appreciate it Dad”
Helen sighed but eventually smiled, pulling Daniel into a quick hug and kissing his cheek.
“Well… the Lord’s work does come first. You go and represent the Kingdom well in California, son. We’ll be praying for the might breakthroughs”.
The family exchanged a blessing, as they would at dinner, before saying their goodbyes; the rest of the family will arrive at the restaurant at 7:30.
Daniel and Alexandra walked out of the auditorium through the private section of the grounds to his black Range Rover, parked in the lot not too far away, and got in. The Texas evening air was still warm. Alexandra took her bag to the office and changed in there, now wearing her colourful hospital scrubs.
They drove to the hospital, Daniel and Alexandra not really talking but listening to a podcast that Daniel and Alexandra’s younger brothers are frequently on, not necessarily religious but talking about TV, current affairs from a cleaner perspective.
They arrive at the hospital, and Daniel pulls up to the staff entrance as close as he can.
“Text me if it gets crazy tonight but you do amazing work with those kids”
Alexandra leans across and gives Daniel a kiss and rubs her hand through his hair
“Appreciate it Dan; Be safe in California, help some great souls and make your Dad proud.”
They had another kiss, one that looked genuine, and for Alexandra it was, as she squeezed his hand once more and then got out of the car with her bag, smiling. Daniel waited in the car to make sure she got through the automatic doors before pulling away.
Daniel drove straight to the gym. Even though he had a fully fitted-out gym at home, he liked his membership at the 24/7 gym in the city, where he also kept a permanent locker. He wandered through, it was busy at that time of the night as he walked straight through to the gym, stopping to talk to a couple of people about sport, a lot of people knew who he was but others didn’t.
Finally getting into the locker room at about 8:15, he grabbed his Black duffel bag, which he always called his “LA bag”. It was packed with different clothes, more branded casual stuff, underwear, toiletries and whatever else he wanted to pack for these trips.
He wandered back to the car and got in, throwing the duffel bag into the backseat and headed into Houston to get to the plane to fly to California.
Daniel jumped on the phone to the aircraft manager. “Just leaving Galveston now, should be there in about an hour”
The aircraft manager gives his approval “There is some airspace delays out of Hobby tonight with the earlier issues with Southwest, so we might be delayed but the flight plan is lodged and approved to San Diego.”
Sitting at a red light just outside Galveston, the black Range Rover hummed quietly as he pulled out a second phone and put it into the cupholder.
“ Hey babe xx
I’m just leaving Galveston now, so probably getting in super late, so I’ll crash on the couch”
He hit send, then put the phone in the cup holder and drove along the highway. The nighttime skyline sat in the distance as the Gulfstream was ready to go as soon as Daniel arrived.
It was just after 10 pm when he rolled through the entrance of the airport, parking in the VIP section of the airfield as he got out his suitcase and his duffel bag. The security lights bathed the tarmac as the family’s Gulfstream 650 was gleaming in its white and dark blue livery.
A security officer in a dark polo waited at the edge of the restricted area as Daniel handed over his ID and the usual family clearance card to say who he was, why he was using the jet and that sort of stuff. The officer scanned both, did a quick check of the bag, opened it, ran a wand over it, and then waved him through.
Another airport staff member checked Daniel's name off, and he was waved through.
The Gulfstream’s door was open, and the stairs were down so he could get straight in.
The pilots tonight were 54-year-old Kevin and 27-year-old Brent, with whom Daniel had a good rapport. The arrangements for the plane were that even though they were family-owned, the crew were supplied by an outside company that provided pilots on request and handled the maintenance.
It was just after 10:30, before Taxi clearance came, and Daniel had one last check of his phone, with a message lit up.
“You can wake me up anytime, can’t wait to feel you next to me”
The Gulfstream eventually took off at 10:50 and levelled at cruising altitude. The cabin lights were dimmed just as Daniel liked for a nighttime flight as he looked out the windows as the Texas night had already disappeared.
Daniel unbuckled his seatbelt at the earliest opportunity. He stood up and walked to the forward closet as the Charcoal suit came off, then the white shirt, which he hung carefully into the cupboard, more out of habit rather than actually caring about them.
He pulled out a T-shirt and grey sweatpants from the duffel bag and put them on; the T-shirt clung to his muscles tightly whilst the grey sweatpants were tight against his smooth thighs and legs, showing off his well-defined legs and ass as well.
The polished look of the church and ministry was gone; what remained was the body built through years of gym dedication and a borderline obsession with CrossFit.
His family would always bring along a flight attendant to serve drinks or snacks. Still, Daniel never felt that level of luxury was necessary, so he reached into a small fridge and grabbed a bottle of Apple juice and a Chilli Chicken wrap, asking them to leave it aboard for him.
Daniel finished the juice and wrap before putting the seat out to relax. He didn’t pull out the Bible kept in every seat compartment; instead, he pulled out another book from his duffel bag and started to read. The public performances could wait a while; the statements that never sat right with him and the World Healing Fellowship could wait too.
At 38,000 feet, Daniel McLaughlin was simply a 27-year-old man on a private flight to San Diego with someone special waiting for him in bed once he arrived.
