Flashback: Eye Contact

What direction had the photographer given that pair of naked, reclining young guys? I'm guessing something like "Okay fellas, now I want you both to stare passionlessly yet suspiciously at each other."

Nailed it.

Eye contact or the purposeful lack of it are quite important in the gay world though. Imagine the guy in the steam room who undoes his towel, spreads his legs and closes his eyes. His lack of eye contact promises he's not going to try to catch anyone staring, which makes you free to stare. Yes, I'm speaking from personal experience.

Also, my eyes are more attuned than straight people's when it comes to steam vision. It's simple queer genetics, born from millennia hiding out in steamy swampland.

The bodybuilder is making searing eye contact with the lens. I'm certain he would have 42.4K followers on Instagram today and get a sponsorship for hair gel. Some people are just ahead of their time.

While the seated outdoor guy is looking off to the side, inviting your gaze. And the seated studio-lit guy with a very 1930s feel has sweet eyes. He's definitely imagining taking his girlfriend out to a romantic and artery-destroying hamburger and milkshake dinner with his paycheck.

I refuse to explain the candelabra crotch guy, except to say that particular photographer was clearly trying to add artistic value to the photo as a way to get past risk of censorship of purely sexual content. And it's an early failed attempt at portraying hot dripping wax fetishism.

I would like to live with the guy in the suit and I'd be happy to be nude at all times, as long as he kept his mansion a reasonable temperature and there were some cushy carpets and an array of clawfoot bathtubs. And while it may seem I'm just drawn to his piercing eyes (as is his co-model), it's really that v-neck sweater under the jacket that is everything to me. What an icon.
