I am not sure what I was expecting, but the weekend with Beau didn’t go exactly like I had planned. I knew that we probably wouldn’t get together and stay together, I knew I liked my job too well to leave and Beau felt the same way about his. Neither of us wanted a long-distance relationship, and we never promised to wait for each other. I was happy that he found someone, and I was planning to go to his place for the wedding next month, and to meet Teddy.

I was still happy for Beau when I came home from his wedding, and Teddy was a nice guy, they did look happy together. I still talk to Beau, he and Teddy call me on at least a monthly basis. Over the next few months, I went out to the clubs a little bit more often and even went on a few dates with guys I met online. While I was having fun, I still had not met anyone that I really connected with. The search would have to continue.

Andy gave me a call with some happy news.

I answered my phone, “hey bud, what’s up?”

He couldn’t contain his excitement, “I’m going to be a dad.”

I laughed, “that is wonderful, when is Jenna due?”

He said, “in two months.”

I said, “wow, and you are just telling me now?”

He sighed, “well, I haven’t told anyone else this, but we had a miscarriage right after the reunion and we didn’t want to get our hopes again. The doctor told us we had to be careful the first few months, but things are all good this time. I’m going to have a son.”

I said, “that is great Andy, I am so happy for you guys, is Jenna feeling, ok?”

He answered, “yeah, I won’t let her do anything around the house, I think she is getting a little tired of me being so overprotective, but I don’t want to risk anything.”

I heard Jenna in the background, “please come home TJ, and get Andy out of the house for a couple days, he is driving me nuts.”

Andy put me on speaker, I said, “he just loves you and your son, he always has been a mother hen type you know.”

She laughed, “I know, I love him too, but I can go to the bathroom by myself.”

Andy protested, “I was just trying to help, I wasn’t going wipe your ass or anything.”

She said, “ok, but we do want you to come home as soon as the baby is born, so we can introduce him to his uncle TJ.”

I chuckled, “of course I will, I can’t wait to meet him, and to see you two again.”

We talked for a while longer and I told them to keep posted, and as soon as they called their parents to tell them the baby was born, I was to be the next person they called. They agreed.

My team had wrapped another project and we got busy on the next one, so I was busy with that and hadn’t had a chance for much more dating. Before long the two months had passed and I got the call from Andy, the baby had been born and he and his mom were doing well. I told Andy I would give them a couple weeks before I came home. They needed to have time to get settled into their new routine and for their families to have a chance to see the baby first.

I packed up and was headed back home for the weekend, I was so excited for Andy and Jenna, they sounded so happy on the phone. I got into town and knocked on their door.

Jenna answered and gave me a hug, “TJ, so good to see you, come on in.”

Andy walked toward me with the baby in his arms, “TJ, I want to introduce you to Andrew Shaw Jr. or as we like to call him, Drew.”

I smiled, “hey little man, it’s nice to meet you.” Andy handed me the baby, I said, “wow, your dad must trust me, I have never really held a lot of babies before.”

Jenna laughed, “he sure does, Andy’s mom brought over some of his baby pictures, and we can’t tell the difference.” Drew started to fuss, so she took him and said, “it’s feeding time, why don’t you guys have a beer and get the grill started, I’ll finish getting dinner ready when I get Drew to sleep.”

I gave Andy a hug, “congrats buddy, he’s perfect.”

He beamed, “thanks TJ, I can’t believe how much I love him, and Jenna is the best mom.”

We went out to the back yard and grilled steaks for supper. We visited for a couple of hours, and I helped Andy clean up and do dishes while Jenna took care of Drew.

Jenna said, “you are going to stay with us while you’re here, right?”

I said, “no, you guys don’t need me here messing up your routine, I have a room at the hotel. I’ll come back tomorrow, and we can spend the day together.”

Andy asked, “are you sure? You are welcome to stay in the guest room.”

I shook my head, “thanks, I would really be more comfortable at the hotel.”

We made plans to meet the next day and I headed to my room, I had checked in before I went to Andy’s. I turned on the tv and flopped on the bed, flipping through the channels. There was nothing I was too interested in on tv. I pulled out my phone and scrolled through Facebook for a minute, nothing interesting there either. Then I remembered, Kyle and I had exchanged numbers after the reunion, after a minute, I worked up the courage to text him.

“Hey Kyle, it’s TJ, how’s it going?”

I got a response right away, “Hey TJ, going good, what about you?”

I text back, “I’m in town to visit Andy, just sitting in a hotel room bored. Want to go grab a beer?”

Kyle answered, “how about you grab a six pack and come to my place, I just got home and need to grab a quick shower.”

I smiled as I typed, “sounds good.”

He gave me directions to his apartment, I headed out the door and picked up the beer. I knocked on the door and Kyle answered wearing just a pair of work out shorts.

He said, “hey Tyler, er… I mean TJ, I’m glad you called. I just got home from my work out and showered, sorry, I’ll go get a shirt.”

He smiled back, “ok, I am more comfortable this way.” I handed him a beer and he put the rest in his fridge.

He asked, “so what brings you to town?”

I said, “Andy and Jenna just had their baby, and I came to see him.”

He said, “they had a boy? That is great, Andy should make a good dad.”

I nodded, “Yeah, the kid is already spoiled rotten, they are both going to be great parents.”

He laughed, “this is so funny.”

I asked, “what’s funny?”

He said, “this, life, Andy having kids, us sitting here as friends. Did you ever picture us doing this when we were back in high school?”

I chuckled, “no, I guess not, at least the part about us being friends anyway.” I thought a minute, then asked, “so how has the whole coming out thing going for you, I mean if you have told anyone.”

He smiled, “yes, I have. I mean I haven’t taken out ads in the newspaper or anything, but I have told my family and most of my friends.”

I nodded, “and how did that go?”

He said, “not bad I guess, dad took it better than mom did. She started in about being a grandma and all that stuff. Luckily my little brother knocked up his girlfriend, so, I am the good the son again, and mom is getting her grandkid.”

He asked, “are you dating anyone?”

I shook my head, “no, are you?”

He moved to the couch and sat beside me, “no, no one serious.”
