Chapter 2

The plane landed and I made my way to the car rental counter to pick up my car. I drove the hour and half to Collierville, I went straight to the Hillside Inn, a small 8 room motel on the edge of town. Wilma Thomas bought the motel about 25 years ago when her husband died suddenly. She had been a stay-at-home mom and needed a job to take care of her kids. Collierville is a town of about 2500 people and you either own a small business, like Mrs. Thomas, or you worked at the ball bearing factory like my dad. I pulled into the motel and Mrs. Thomas met me at the door.

“Hi Brian, so good to see you again, you are looking well.”

I dropped off my bags and golf clubs and headed over to the plant to see my dad. He started at the plant after high school working on the production floor, he worked his way up to supervisor and now he was the warehouse manager. I parked and walked over to the loading docks, his office was right next to the shipping office, and I didn’t want to go through the main office. He smiled, “nice to meet you too, I better get back to work.”

Dad said, “thanks Chuck, I am probably going to take off a little bit early, so if you need anything just give me a call. I am going to go have a beer with my boy.”

Chuck waved, “sure thing boss, enjoy, and nice to meet you, Brian.”

Dad finished a few things, and we headed out the door, we headed to one of the 3 bars that were on Main St. We had a couple beers as I told dad about work, and he caught me up on all that had happened since I was last in town.

We sat and ate as mom started talking about the reunion, dad and I sort of tuned her out after about 5 minutes. We helped her clear the table and wash the dishes. Dad jumped in, “Hey Cody, Brian and I were just going to have a beer out on the deck, care to join us?” Dad grabbed my arm and pulled me to the door.

Cody smiled, “that’s ok, I know she can be a little irritating from time to time. It’s nice to meet you too.”
