Chapter 6

Alec

A couple days before we were to take mom home from the hospital, I headed back to San Diego to list my house for sale and set a up a mover to bring my things to Kansas City. I stopped by work, grabbed my personal belongings and said my goodbyes. I spent my last night there with Russ, John and a few other friends and headed for the airport first thing in the morning.

I was back in Kansas City by about 2, they were giving mom her final instructions when I arrived at the hospital, Amy and I took her home. We got her settled and Amy and I started to cook supper, Blake was going pick up the boys and come to mom’s so we could all eat supper together.

Amy said, “I am really glad you decided to move back Alec.”

I replied, “so am I sis, when I was out there getting things ready to move, I realized that I really didn’t have many friends out there. Everybody we hung around were Zoe’s friends, other than Russ and John, nobody made an attempt to contact me after she died. Whenever I would see any of them, all they did was give me that pity greeting, and we would have an awkward conversation before they hurried off.”

She looked at me, “I know you miss Zoe, but it has been over a year, have you ever thought about dating again?”

I sat down at the table, “I really hadn’t until I was in Cancun.”

Amy turned to me, “oh, did you meet someone?”

I paused, “will you promise not to tell anyone this?”

She got a concerned look on her face, “Alec, what’s going on?”

I looked her, “Amy, I did meet someone, we met for drinks and took a walk on the beach, then spent the night together.”

Amy smiled, “that is great Alec, are you going to see her again? Where does she live?”

I took a deep breath, “Well, here’s the thing, I don’t know where they live, we were supposed to have another date the next night, but that was the morning you called to tell me about mom. We didn’t exchange numbers the first night, I was planning on doing that on our next date. I didn’t even get a chance to tell them that I was leaving.”

She asked, “so how are you going to get a hold of her?”

I shook my head, “I don’t know, Amy there is one more thing, his name is Nate.” I watch for her reaction.

She stared at me, “Alec, what are you saying?”

I said, “I was very attracted to him, it was the first time that I had ever done anything like that. Now I can’t get him out of my mind, and I don’t know his last name or where he lives.”

Amy was trying to process what I just told her, “Jesus Alec, so you are… gay?”

I nodded, “I think I might be.”

She asked, “so you didn’t love Zoe?”

“Oh God, yes, I did, with all my heart and I always will. I wish she was still here, but ever since college I found myself checking out other guys, but once I met Zoe, those feelings went away. Now that she is gone, they have returned, I know it sounds crazy but the first time I saw Nate, I got the same feeling I had when I first met Zoe.”

Amy was still trying to understand, “God Alec, I don’t know what to think about all this, I don’t know what to say.”

I said, “well, it may not matter anyway, like I said I have no way to get a hold of Nate, I don’t know his last name or where he lives. Hell, he is probably pissed at me for leaving without telling him, so there isn’t much of a chance that I will ever see him again anyway.”

Amy asked, “so, you really like this guy?”

I nodded, “yes I do.”

Just then, Blake and the boys came running in the door.

Roman jumped into my arms, “daddy, you’re home.”

“Hey buddy, yes I am, and I am done leaving town so I will be here with you every day from now on.”

He smiled, giving me a big hug, “yippie, look at the picture I drew today.”

I took the paper, “wow, that is awesome Roman, you did a good job on this, we are going to put it right here on grandma’s fridge so everyone can see it.”

He gave me a huge smile, clearly proud of himself.

Amy said, “ok boys, go wash your hands, supper will be ready in a few minutes.”

It had been a couple weeks since mom was released from the hospital, and she was doing well. The doctor told us on her last checkup that she could do anything she was doing before the heart attack as long as she was careful.

Since mom was doing so well and I was starting to go a little stir crazy, I decided it was time to find a job. My old boss, Pete, had sent a letter of recommendation to me, and I knew there were several positions available here, so I figured I could land a job fairly quickly. I was right, I had an interview a week later and I was going to start my new job the following Monday.

After one of our family suppers, mom called Amy and I into the kitchen.

Mom said, “I have been thinking, I feel like I can live on my own again.”

I said, “yeah, I agree mom, I will start looking for a place right away.”

She stopped me, “well, I have another suggestion.”

Amy asked, “what’s that mom?”

Mom said, “I was visiting my friend Linda yesterday, she just moved into a nice senior living complex on 28th Street. If you two agree, maybe Alec and Roman can stay here and I will move there. There is a nice one-bedroom unit available.”

Amy said, “mom, are you sure that is what you want?”

Mom nodded, “yes, look, before Alec moved back, I was thinking of selling this house anyway. There is just so much upkeep and it’s getting hard for me to keep up with it all. I feel bad that you and Blake have to come over to mow my yard and scoop my snow all the time.”

Amy looked at me, “what do you think?”

I said, “I wouldn’t feel right about it unless I bought the house from you mom, or at least paid you rent.”

Mom said, “I thought about that too, how about if you pay my rent at the new apartment and you pay for any repairs you need to make on this house. That way I don’t have to deal with any taxes that I would have to pay if I sold the house.”

I looked at Amy, “what do you think sis?”

She shrugged, “sounds fair to me, we all would be within a few miles of each other, so anytime mom needed any help, we would be close enough to get there quickly.”

We went with mom the next day to look at the apartment, it was a very nice unit and mom was so excited about it, she signed all the paperwork that day and I wrote out rent and deposit checks. We spent the week moving mom’s furniture into her place and all my stuff out of the storage unit I had rented into my new place. As much as I loved my mom, it was nice to have a place of my own again with just me and Roman. As we moved mom in, I think she was happy to be in her own place too, we all had spent a lot of time together in the last couple of months.

Amy and I had a couple more talks about me and Nate, she said she thought she understood and that she only wanted me to be happy, we included mom and Blake in the last conversation. They were both very supportive too, I was relieved to have that off my chest. Now I just had to figure out if I could track down Nate.

Roman and I got into our own routine, I was glad that the daycare/preschool that Amy had Ethan enrolled in had an opening and I was able to get Roman in. It was nice that we each had a backup to pick the boys up in case either one of us got held up at work.

Things were finally in place, I had a house, Roman was in preschool and I was starting my new job on Monday. I was sitting down relaxing after I had bathed Roman and got him to sleep, as I was channel surfing my mind started to wonder. There was Nate, laying naked on the bed looking up at me, God he was perfect. That dark wavy hair and tan skin with a wide smile with the whitest teeth I had ever seen, as I looked down at his body, the view only improved. The broad fur covered chest, the flat stomach and of course that cock, just the right size, a perfect mouthful. Finally, those legs, covered with the same hair he had on his chest, those scars, I really wanted to hear the story behind those. I found my hand working its way down to my hardening cock, Jesus I needed to get over this guy, I was probably never going to see him again anyway.

Not finding much to interest me on TV, I picked up my laptop and got a little curious and searched for a gay dating site. I told myself I was just going to take a quick look, just to see if there was anything that caught my eye. I was surprised to see a couple of guys that seemed interesting, against my better judgement I set up a profile. I kept it brief, just something like, new to the area, just looking for friends, not giving too much information about myself. I looked at a couple of the other profiles that caught my eye, I opened the messenger just to see if they were online. Before I could find any of members that I was interested in, Niceguy22 messaged me.

Niceguy22: Hi, how are you tonight?

I toggled back to his profile, he was about my age and seemed to have some of the same interests as I had, the site gave us a 90% match. After I thought for a couple of minutes I answered back.

Me: Good, how about you?

NG: Good here too, according to your profile we have a little in common.

Me: Yes, I saw that too. I just signed up here today, not really sure how all this works yet.

NG: LOL, yeah, I am not sure about this site either, I just signed up a day ago, are you looking for anything in particular?

Me: Not sure, I am new to this whole gay dating thing, I just went out with a guy for the first time a couple months ago. Do you have anything that you are looking for?

NG: I guess nothing in particular, you just seemed like someone I would like to talk to, see if we hit it off and then take it from there.

Me: That seems reasonable, I am new in town and don’t know a lot of people, if nothing else we may become friends.

NG: My thoughts exactly, a friend is always good.

We talked for about another hour and finally decided to meet. I know you are supposed to meet a stranger in a public place and not give out too much personal information, so we decided to meet at a new club that had just opened. We agreed to meet Saturday night at 7. Amy and Blake were taking Ethan and Roman to the new Disney movie and were going to keep him overnight, so I had the night free.

I kissed Roman goodbye and told him I would pick him up in the morning, I told Amy thanks for taking him along to the movie.

She smiled, “do you have any plans for the night?”

I lied, “no, just going to chill, get ready for the new job on Monday.” I know we talked about the whole gay thing, but for some reason I was yet comfortable talking about having a “date”.

She waved as she left, “see you in the morning, come over for breakfast if you want, I’ll make pancakes.”

“Sounds good sis, see you then.”

I took a shower and got ready to meet Paul, we gave each other our first names and I told him that I would be wearing a blue button-down shirt. He told me what he would be wearing so we would be able to recognize each other.

I pulled into the parking lot right at 7, I took a deep breath and walked into the club, there was a nice crowd already inside. I went up to the bar and ordered a beer, as the bartender handed it to me, I saw Paul walk in the door, at least I think it was Paul. He walked to the bar and ordered his beer and turned to me, “Alec?”

I nodded, “yes, are you Paul?”

He smiled, “Yes, it’s nice to meet you in person.”

Paul was handsome, blonde hair, blue eyes, fit build, and a nice smile. We sat at a table away from the music so we could talk and get better acquainted. We were having a pleasant conversation, but I couldn’t help but notice that I didn’t get the same feeling that I had the first time I talked to Nate. I couldn’t explain it, he was a very nice guy, we had a lot in common and I was enjoying his company, maybe I was being too picky.

We talked for a while and then decided to dance, again it was nice but there were no sparks when we touched. After our dance I went to the bar to get us another beer, and when I sat back down, I was looking out at the dance floor watching some of the other couples. A tall blonde was facing me as he dancing with a dark-haired guy, as they turned around my heart nearly stopped, holy shit, was that Nate?

I must have been staring, Paul asked, “is everything ok?”

I turned back to Paul, “oh, yeah sorry, I thought I saw someone I knew.”

He asked, “do you want to go talk to them?”

I said, “no, that’s ok, I'm here with you.”

We resumed our conversation, but I had to feel sorry for Paul as I was paying more attention to the dance floor than I was to him. I saw Nate and his friend head back to their table and sit next to the same group that I had seen in Cancun. Nate walked to the bar to get a round of drinks, I turned so that he couldn’t see my face. I didn’t know what to do, here was the man that I had been pining for the last several months was right in front of me and I was avoiding him. He was probably still pissed at me for leaving without telling him, and he was out with another guy, so he was obviously moving on.

I turned back to Paul, who was beginning to look annoyed, he gave a half smile, “are you sure everything is, ok?”

I shook my head, “I’m sorry I am acting so weird, look I don’t think I am going to be much fun tonight, would you be upset with me if I called it an early night?”

He looked disappointed, “well, I guess not, if that is what you want.”

I said, “I am really sorry, you are a great guy, and it’s not your fault, if you would like to try again, I will give you my phone number and we can talk another time.”

He gave me his phone, I typed in my number and snuck along the back wall and headed out the door.
