I got to work the day after the fire, Thad grabbed me, “hey, how is Alec, Captain said you stayed at the hospital until he woke up.”

I nodded, “I did, he is going to be good, he’ll be in a cast for about 6 weeks and then will need a little therapy.”

He asked, “so, did you get to talk to him, you know, about Cancun?”

I shrugged, “not really, but Captain, I will not promise you that I will not do what I did again, if anyone is trapped like that, I will do whatever I can to help.”

He looked at me over the top of his glasses, “even if it’s not Alec?”

I glared at him, “I would have done the same thing for anyone on this department, and you know that.”

He sighed, “yeah, I guess I do, I just have this feeling that there is something else going on with you two.”

I got a little bit defensive, “so what if there is?”

He held his hand up, “relax, I just want to make sure that you didn’t do what you did because of your relationship.”

I said, “I told you, I would have done that for anyone on the department.”

He nodded, “yes, I know you would, and even though Alec has only been here a short time, I get the feeling he would do the same thing again too.”

I agreed and the captain told me he had to answer to the higher ups, so we had to go through the written report thing to make them happy.

I was glad to have that behind us and went back to work after I filled Thad in on everything.

Over the next few weeks, I would spend most of my days off helping Alec around the house. Amy and I were getting along great splitting up our time with Alec. I looked down at my leg, “sure, I was 16 and Cole and I were in a car accident, my leg was trapped, and I had to be cut out of the car. Mike crawled in the car with me while I was being cut out, once I was out, he and Joe rushed me to the hospital. I had surgery similar to yours.”

We both looked down at our scarred legs, noticing for the first time how similar the scars were.

He asked, “wait, you mean Mike and Joe from Station #1?”

I said, “yeah, it was Mike’s first day, he was so calm and caring that I decided to become an EMT while I was in the hospital, he has been my mentor ever since.”

Alec sighed, “wow, that is amazing, that explains why you are so great with all the patients you pick up.”

I chuckled, “well, I try to be, some patients are kind of assholes, but I just think that it’s the pain or stress that causes that.”

We lay there holding each other tight, feeling even closer now that we were sharing important parts of our lives.

I turned to Alec, “it’s late, I should let you get to sleep.”
