You Don't Have To (Chapter Three)

-Marc Adams-

The morning after the incident was very awkward.

Don't get me wrong, I loved what happened last night. I can't even wrap my head around the fact that it happened. I had a very good sleep last night I probably forgot everything I studied the day before. I don't know how to approach him or talk to him.

When I woke up I hear sounds outside which only means that Jake is awake.

I try to act as normal as I could as I got out of my room.

"Good morning." I greeted as I walked out towards our bathroom.

Jake smiled, nodded and continued reading his book. He acted like nothing out of the ordinary happened last night.

After relieving myself and washing my face, I muster all the courage I have and walk out of the bathroom.

I don't know what I was thinking but when came out of the bathroom I went directly in front of Jake and just stood there.

"I'm guessing you want to talk about last night." Jake said flipping through his book.

"Well, yeah. What was that all about?" I asked.

"I told you, I heard that you were having problems and I decided to help you out. I thought that I could repay you for what you did for me before." Jake said.

"Well, don't think that I am forcing you to do it or you have to do it as payment. I don't like you to feel like my slave or anything." I explained.

"I liked doing it. Just tell me whenever you like to do it again, I'll be there. And who knows, maybe something more will happen." Jake teased.

"Just remember," I started.

"Yeah, yeah. I already told you a bunch of times. I. Don't. Mind." Jake emphasized with a smile pointing to my chest at every word.

"I know I'm just telling you. You. Don't. Have. To." I replied back trying to copy his action.

********

"I don't think it was that bad. You were up all night in the library studying last night." I said trying to console Jake.

"Yeah, the library." Jake replied sounding weird.

"Besides I bet I did worse than you by a long shot. I think I hold the record for having the lowest prelim score. I don't think I ever did this bad on any test ever." I added realizing how bad I did on my exam.

I don't know how I'm going to last two more days of exams.

********

For the next two days I never left Jake's side. Since we have all classes together I think it's nice that I stay with him. I make sure he eats three times a day.

"You're going to need the energy to take your exams. Besides it will help your brain function a lot." I explained to Jake, urging him to eat.

"And who said that? Doctor Smarty-pants." Jake joked.

"I don't know. People." I answered.

"I told you I'm fine. I survived for a year living like this." Jake replied.

"Yeah, but now you just have to stop living like that. It's a wonder you haven't gotten ulcer yet. It would be better if you ate three times a day than to starve yourself just to have a book that you probably won't even use when you graduate." I lectured.

"Okay-okay." Jake said raising his hands in defeat.

"Yay! So where do you want to eat?" I asked excitedly.

"There's a new deli a few blocks from here. Want to try that out?" Jake asked.

"Sure, sounds nice." I replied.

With that we were on our way to the deli.

********

"I'm going to have a grilled cheese sandwich with lots of cheese and a Coke." I said to the waiter.

"I think I'm going to have a BLT and an iced tea." Jake said to the waiter as well.

"This place is nice, I like it here." I said to break the silence.

"I know, good thing there aren't many people here yet." Jake replied.

"If the food is as nice as the ambience, I think they might have a regular customer." I said.

A few minutes of chit-chat later and the food arrived.

"Looks good." I said as I took my first bite.

We continued our chit-chat until we finished every bit of food.

"That was delicious." Jake said pulling out his wallet.

"Oh no Jake, it's my treat." I said insisted.

"No, this time it's my treat. It's the least I could do." Jake said.

"Fine, but next time I'm paying." I replied.

********

"I don't like being cooped up in here, it's too depressing." I complained.

It's Saturday night and we've finally finished all our exams. I think that it shouldn't be spent inside a dorm room. People should be out celebrating!

*beep* *beep*

"Hey Jake, I just received an invitation to a party, want to tag along? I heard there's going to be a lot of people there." I told Jake.

"I think I'll just stay here. I'm not much of a party person." Jake reasoned.

"Oh come on, it'll be fun. It's like you barely go out of our room to do anything fun. If you're not in here, you're always in the library." I try to convince him.

"Thanks, but I'm just not the type of person who likes parties." Jake replied again.

"Ok, what do you want to do then?" I asked.

"You can go to the party and have a good time and then I'll stay here." Jake said back.

"Are you sure you're fine being alone here?" I ask.

"I'm fine. I'll just read and then sleep when I'm tired." Jake replied.

"Okay, but if you change your mind here's the place." I said writing the address in a piece of paper.

I went into my room and changed clothes. After a few minutes I was out of my dorm room.

It was a bummer Jake didn't want to go with me but I didn't want to waste a perfectly good night staying inside my room. Going to the party is a great way to forget how bad I did in my prelims.

********

-Jake Miller-

I can't go, Chase might need me tonight. Maybe if he doesn't call me in a few hours I'll follow you there.

********

-Marc Adams-

"Man, this party is so great!" One guy shouted over the loud music.

Everyone was jumping up and down and dancing with the beat. It was a big pile of sweaty people grinding at each other, me included.

"You're so cute." A guy moved in front of me and said to me.

"You're not bad yourself." I remarked.

"Want to go get some drinks?" He asked.

"Sure." I agreed.

We went out from the crowd and went to get drinks.

"Hi, I'm Chase." The guy said handing me a shot.

"Marc." I replied as we both took a shot.

"Let's dance." Chase said grabbing my hand and pulling me into the dance floor.

********

-Jake Miller-

Chase hasn't called or texted me yet, maybe he won't be needing me tonight. I think I will go to the party and let a little steam off.

I changed into nicer clothes and went to the address Marc wrote on the paper.

The place wasn't that far and the night has a nice cold chill so I decided to walk to the party.

I was a block away from the party and I can already hear the loud music and the people having a blast.

As I neared the place I notice a lot of people are outside holding cups and just talking and having fun. I went inside and a crowd instantly greets me. I know it sounds stupid but I try to look for Marc in the crowd. After a few minutes or so of searching aimlessly for Marc I gave up and searched for the bar instead.

As I made my way to the bar an arm grabs my shoulder and I'm carelessly spun around losing my balance.

"Whoa, a little bit tipsy are we?" The man asked.

"Excuse me..." I start to say but I stopped as I recognize the person holding me.

"Excuse me...what?" The man replied sarcastically.

"Alvin." I said as he helped me steady myself.

"Hey. Haven't seen you in a while." He replied flashing his pearly whites.

"Oh." was all I could say.

"Were you going to the bar? I'll go with you." Alvin said.

"Yeah, ok." I managed to say. I don't know what to say, I haven't talked to the man for a long time. It doesn't help that he's way, way cuter than before. I thought that since we were at a party it would be fine if Alvin talked to me.

We walked towards the bar with his arm draped over mine. It's surprising, his sudden closeness to me. He wasn't this way before. Maybe it's just the alcohol.

"I missed you." He whispered a little too loudly into my ear. The smell of alcohol is unmistakable, not strong but it's there.

"I...missed you too." I managed to reply. Alvin was giving off a weird sexual vibe. We were almost at the bar when his other hand started caressing my chest. His lips were so close to my ear that I could feel his breath. I was so turned on right now.

When I looked towards the bar, my body froze at what I saw. Chase was at the bar with someone, his back was all I could see.

"Alvin, we need to get out of here." I said urgently.

"I like the sound of that." Alvin said.

As we were about to walk away from the bar the other guy turned around and I managed to get a good look at his face. Oh god, the guy Chase is with is Marc. What the hell is happening? This is not good. How am I supposed to tell Marc that Chase is bad news without telling him about Chase and me. This is messed up. Maybe they're just talking, but the way Chase is standing too close to Marc meant something more.

The first thing I do is rush out of the bar and out of the party. Alvin was walking behind me not letting go of my hand.

"Where should we go, your place or my place?" Alvin asked with a sly smile. I didn't even know Alvin and I play for the same team. It's such a shame that I have something important to do.

"Alvin, listen to me" I said grabbing him at his sides, "the guy who attacked before is here at the party. You have to leave." I told him.

"No I don't. I won't leave until you go with me." Alvin said.

"You're not thinking clearly, you should go home." I said.

"No, I'm fine. I haven't had that much to drink." Alvin argued.

I'm running out of options here.

"Okay, fine. I'll go to your place, but not tonight, maybe tomorrow. Just go home, I don't want to risk you getting hurt again." I proposed.

"Fine, give me one goodbye kiss." Alvin said.

I was willing to do anything just to make him go home, Marc and Chase might be gone by now. I was about to kiss him on the cheek when he faced me straight and our mouths touched for the very first time. I was shocked that Alvin was kissing me hard, his arms were over my shoulders and his hand was at the back of my head. He tasted sweet, in spite of the alcohol.

Alvin was the one who broke the kiss and said, "I hope that I'll see you tomorrow."

I was on cloud nine for a few minutes.

Coming back down to earth, I quickly rushed back into the crowd and find Marc. I see that he is still dancing with Chase, a little too dirty if I might add. This must be stopped, who knows what might happen to Marc when this goes on longer. He might become Chase's new toy, I couldn't let that happen.

I must wait for Chase to leave and I'll go in to pull Marc out of the crowd.

After what seems like an hour of Marc grinding into Chase or the other way around, Chase left Marc on the dance floor to do something. I quickly made my way to him, carefully checking for Chase and pulled Marc out of the place.

"Jake! You made it." Marc said with a huge smile.

"Yeah, I was bored. Want to get out of here?" I asked.

"No, you just got here. Besides, I met this hot guy and I think he's into me." Marc said.

"Yeah, I know. That's why we need to get out of here. I don't like seeing you with that guy." I explained.

"Someone's jealous." Marc replied with a cocky smile.

I ignored him and just pulled him out and away from the party towards the street.

"Wait, the guy I was dancing with..." Marc started.

"Chase, I know. Now let's go." I cut off, pulling Marc into the darkness.

"Okay, fine. What's your deal? I was having a blast in there." Marc said in annoyance.

"Don't make me say it. I don't like to talk about it." I said as we continued walking.

"What is it? What is so important that you can't talk about? What is so important that you have to pull me out of a perfectly nice party? Huh? Tell me!" Marc yelled pulling his arm out of my grasp.

Marc had an unmistakable scent of alcohol on him. Which made talking to him more difficult.

"Marc it's for your own good." I assured him.

"No! I think I know what's good for me." Marc replied then turned around and walked back to the party.

I stop him with my hand and he just shouted back at me, "What?!"

"Promise me that if I tell you that you won't go back to the party." I offered.

"Fine, tell me now." Marc said crossing his arms.

"Not in here. Can we do it in a private place?" I asked.

"Okay, where do you want to go?" He asked.

"I know someplace we can go." I said.

********

"Wow, the lake. Haven't been here in a long time." Marc said.

"This place is where I go to when I want to escape my problems." I said.

We sat in a nearby bench, close together because the night has a cold chill to it.

"The walk here cleared my head a little bit and the fresh air helps a lot. So what are you going to tell me? Is it something about Chase?" Marc asked.

I poured out every detail of my life from the moment I met Chase until now. He would ask questions whenever necessary but he let me talk most of the time.

"That's why I don't like you to get too close to him. He might do to you what he's doing to me." I finished.

"So, whenever I thought you were at the library?" Marc asked looking at the reflection of the moon at the lake.

"I was with Chase." I replied staring blankly at the sky.

We were both quiet for a few minutes then Marc stood up. I had no idea what he was going to do next so I stood up with him. He suddenly hugs me the most tender and sensual hug in the universe, if there was such a thing. I froze at his touch.

"I'm so sorry, I had no idea what you were going through." Marc said, his voice a little muffled because his face was buried in my shoulder.

I relaxed under his arms a few minutes into his embrace. I hugged him back and I started crying into his arms.

"This needs to stop." Marc said with a grudge in his voice.
