18 years earlier

The rain had started as Kevin had pulled from the garage. Annoying, he had just had the car cleaned the day before. As he turned towards the meeting venue, he realised that in the wider scheme of things, a bit of moisture wasn’t such a big deal. He’d been trying to distract himself.

Earlier that morning, the four Senators charged with ensuing The Head didn’t come to any harm, had met in Capital.

“He’s really going to do this then?” Asked Bayridge as he leaned back, confidential report open on the table in front of him.

“I’ve spoken to him in person twice.” Replied Elington, who at 67 was the senior in the group. “I didn’t try to encourage or dissuade him. I just wanted to hear it from his own lips.”

“It’s dangerous letting him out of the tent, regardless of how foolhardy he is.” Spoke Rodworth, always the cautious one. “There will be a lot of people looking to exploit change at the top.”

“I’ve had Europe and South America send their diplomats to seek assurances.” Revealed Scotten. “Not their run-of-the-mill people, their god-damn Chief Diplomats, can you believe!”

“It’s understandable that they’re worried, everything has been so stable. Six years without any incidents, he’s been effective, for such a young guy.” Offered Elington. “And expensive. I saw last year’s transfers; we estimate the organisation is sitting on at least $200 million in cash alone.”

“Most of that will be government money!” Spat Rodworth.

“Don’t get on your soap box Charles,” Cut Bayridge. “We, the Poms and the Souths wanted an international police officer. That’s what we got.”

“I’m not on my soap box. I just wish as a police officer, more things ‘inside’ the law would be done.” Countered Rodworth.

“The Haig sorts out the strictly legal stuff.” Answered Bayridge. “We engaged this guy to sort out the more ‘technically legal’ firestorms. So far, that’s what he’s done.”

“Gentlemen,” pleaded Elington, “these are old discussions. Yes, he’s effective, yes, his ability to both engage and terrify the criminal element is worrisome. I agree, if any of his exploits get out, we’re all in deep trouble. The key point of today, is none of these facts, the key point is he has resigned.”

As Kevin arrived, he saw the old Jag in the car park, it was spotless. What the fuck did the guy see in them? Expensive and unreliable, more than once they’d been left on the side of the road, cursing a blown head gasket.

“Morning,” Greeted Kevin, as he entered the room on time, and took the seat next to Roy. “I see your car is spotless as ever.”

“Yes, I had two shirtless boys washing and polishing it most of Sunday.” Answered Roy.

“Only shirtless?” Asked Kevin, “I thought you usually insisted they do your house duties in the buff?”

“Yes, alright, you’ve got me. Of course, they were bare arsed.” Roy confirmed, as Kevin grinned.

“Two of your sponsored wrestlers?”

“I sponsor the whole damn squad, they rotate. A pair each weekend to do the garden, pool or in this case, the cars.” Replied Roy. “There’s another two at home as we speak, trimming the hedge, they didn’t finish.”

“Are they all gay?” asked Gary from the side, listening in.

“Nah, only one or two.” Answered Roy, “but, the whole team is so comfortable with their bodies, it’s hard to tell.”

“Well, we’re not here to talk about your visual self-gratification support structure.” Declared Kevin, smiling. “I want to cover the monthly update, discuss why Europe and South have been so jumpy, and lastly bring the team up to date on another matter. Roy, I want you to chair the meeting. I don’t intend to say anything until the end.”

“Fair enough. Gary, how did we go with those shipments out of Chile?” initiated Roy.

The meeting switched gear to full business, it didn’t slacken for the next four hours.

“She’s only a girl Ruth!” exclaimed Helen’s father. He was furious.

“She’s not a girl. She’s in her twenties! Peter.” Countered Ruth, matching his energy. “There was no call for you going off like you did last night. He’s a good man, we’re lucky they found each other.”

“If he’s so good, then how come I have no idea what he does for a job?”

“Goodness, is that what you’re worried about?” asked Ruth, mocking him. “How about worrying about your grandson’s health!”

“Grandson?” questioned Peter. “She knows she’s having a boy?”

“Of course not, it’s too early for that shit.” Replied Ruth, smiling. “That doesn’t mean I don’t know.”

“You women are all nuts.” He resigned, resting his hands on the table. “A grandson! Well then, ain't that something.”

“Can you get a sun-burnt dick?” asked the naked 18-year-old as he stepped down to move the ladder further along the unruly, overgrown hedge.

“I’d say most of us, no,” answered Carl as he picked up an armful of cut greenery. “You, Godzilla dick, on the other hand. Highly likely.”

“Stop teasing me about my cock.” Whined Billy, as he stepped back up. “You guys are always on about it.”

“Maybe that’s because it’s huge, and you play a sport where the uniform is Lycra tights.” Suggested Carl as he dumped the offcuts, and reached up to take the member in question in hand. Billy didn’t flinch. Usual team stuff, he thought.

Carl pumped the cock back and forth, bringing an immediate response from the meat. It almost doubled in length before his eyes.

“That’s the other thing, you guys are always hanging on to me. Jeepers!”

“You love it.” Answered Carl, as he stared at the weapon.

“I don’t mind, but how come its always me? Even in the bouts, I get felt up.”

“It’s not always you. The team held Jim down on his birthday, and jacked him off!” Countered Carl. Billy just nodded.

“So now you’ve done this,” gestured the wiry teenager, “are you going to finish me off?”

“Will you do me?” asked his co-worker. Billy nodded. Carl lent in and with his mouth wide, took as much of the length in as he could. The security footage would be great, but the boys of course knew about the cameras, and didn’t care. Roy had proven himself the perfect sponsor, not once in six years had he touched one of the guys. Even though, some regularly offered.

“We will just have to watch the transition.” Asserted Rodworth. “I still don’t understand how he’s going to remove the target from his forehead.”

“He has a plan,” confirmed Elington. “I didn’t want to know what it was, but the crime families will be watching.”

“If he’s successor remains on track, they probably won’t move on him.” Suggested Bayridge. “They all saw how he tore apart the Rushmoores.”

“What a god-awful mess that was.” Replied Rodworth, shaking his head. “You couldn’t believe he could be so ‘calculating’. He seems so ‘ordinary’, in person.”

“When is this departure meant to happen?” asked Scotten. “I’ve had Justice on the phone to me twice this month.”

“Justice?” asked Bayridge. “Aren’t you gunning to get Department head for that mob?”

“I wouldn’t mind it, but I want State Governorship before that.” Replied Scotten.

“Ambition George, you’re not short on that.”

“So that covers off everything, except your matter,” declared Roy. “The floor is yours.”

Thanks Roy. I’ll get to the point,” started Kevin. “I’m stepping down as Head, effectively immediately.” The table went into shock. Only Roy had been briefed. “When I walk out those doors,” he nodded. “I will be citizen Bolton. I will never discuss any aspect of what we do here with anyone, ever.” Silence.

“Who is your replacement?” Asked Gary, tentatively.

“Roy here,” replied Kevin, turning to look squarely at his lieutenant. “You all saw what an outstanding job Roy did on the Rushmoores. More importantly everyone knows it was him, not me.”

“You’ve planned this?” asked Whiten.

“Only in the last few weeks,” replied Kevin. “But, it’s always important to have succession in place around here. For obvious reasons.”

“You think you can leave?” asked one of the guys.

“Shortly, when we call this meeting to an end, Roy and I will work out the finer details. But, yes, I have a significant reason for departing.”

After a dozen more questions, the chat was done. The leadership team departed, leaving Roy and the former Boss.

* * *

“So, you walk with nothing?” confirmed Roy.

“Not a cent, not a title, not a contact.” Replied Kevin.

“I hope it works, for your sake.” Worried Roy.

“It has to work Roy. Helen’s pregnant. I can’t have a child come into this.” He gestured around the room.

“What will you do?”

“I have an interview for an architect role.” Replied Kevin.

“Well, I’ll be fucked, I forgot you were and architect.”

“Yeah, it pays nothing but that’s not the point. I’ve put my near empty bank accounts on the public record, I own the house, the car, that’s it.”

“Well, Mr. Joe Average.” Suggested Roy, as Kev nodded.

“You know,” Roy started, clearly changing topics. “I’m not going to run the show as squeaky clean as you.” Kevin nodded, knowing that would be the case.

“Well, that’s the thing, its your show now.” I won’t know anything about it, we won’t be speaking Roy, ever.” Roy sat back thoughtful.

“Well, I think you may be right.” New Boss started. “But just so you don’t get startled. When a dozen years have passed, I am going to get back in touch. Just for ordinary stuff.”

“Like?” quizzed Kev.

“I have no idea, maybe we could pull together a bowling quad. Something every Joe Average is part of.” He paused. “Also, when this munchkin you’re raising has all grown up, I’ll get him or her a contact in Europe. Your kid won’t know you’ve spent six years sitting in the pointy end, seeing the world, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a look see.” Kevin nodded.

“You do that Roy, you do that.”

“Well, I’ve got to get back to my hedge trimmers.” Declared Roy, standing. “You wouldn’t believe the size of the cock one of them has. Holy fuck, he gets openly groped in every match!”

“That’s way too much information.” Said Kevin as he paused and stretched out his hand, “And Roy, thanks.”

On the drive home Kevin wondered if Helen’s father had calmed down. Yesterday he’d gone right off.

When he pulled in and arrived in the kitchen, he found his soon to be wife, bump showing.

“How was work?” She asked.

“I quit,” he declared, shocking her. “I figure, if I can’t talk about what I do for a job, I need to get a new job.”

“Honey, what will you do?” she asked, concerned.

“Draw stuff.” He answered, as his sweet heart broke into a light coughing fit.

“We should get that cough looked at.” He said, worried, “you just don’t seem to be able to shake it.”

“I will, just let me focus on your son first.” She said.

“Son!” he exclaimed. “How do you know.”

“I just know.” She said firmly. “might have had something to do with the beach-side air.” She smiled.

“We should start looking for names.” She continued, as she put her hand around his shoulders and kissed.

“You know I’m straight, don’t you?” Asked Billy, as the pair sat around Roy’s poolside, hedge done.

“Yeah, it’s so fucken obvious,” replied Carl, “it’s painful.”

“You were the one who suddenly wanted to fuck! I was going to be happy with head.” Defended Billy.

“I know, calm yourself.” Retorted Carl. “You know, I’m gay.”

“Yeah, figured that last year. When you kept wanting to suck me off.”

“I don’t think anyone in wrestling cares, who is what. Not like other sports.” offered Billy

“Do you think we’ll ever get to a world, where no one gives a fuck?”

“Who knows man, who knows?”

“It may just take a couple of brave dudes, to stand up?
