Today we're looking at Gay Cupid, a personals site focused on connecting with other men for dating, friendship and to "mingle." While there are definitely guys looking for sex here, the focus is on relationships, whether buddies, boyfriends, pen pals or going out on dates. What stands out about this site is that virtually every man I browsed after signing up had a pic of his face - not his cock or torso like on many other personals sites. The guidelines say that members' primary photos should clearly show their face and cannot show nudity, and I think that says a lot about the site's focus.
This site seems to have more members in my area that are "regular guy" types of all ages. There's more average to cute guys who aren't showing off, aren't gym bunnies or male models. Expect men in glasses, guys who are clean-shaven and guys with facial hair, all body types including thin guys and guys with a few extra pounds.
Something important is that although I'm in Los Angeles and very near West Hollywood, one of the busiest areas on most gay personals sites, only 29 members within 100 miles of my area had logged in in the last week. That was based on a search of guys from 25 to 65 years old, any body type, hair color, etc, and didn't require a photo in their profile, so I'm afraid that pickings here are on the lean side. When I widened my search for guys within 250 miles, I got a few more results, but still under 50 guys total - I usually see hundreds at smaller personals sites and thousands at larger sites.
When I signed up for a free membership, I had to create a profile, which is normal for this kind of site. I'm happy to note that when I signed up for a free account, I was not bombarded with page pushing me to pay for a membership. Instead this site was low key, and let me judge what they had to offer. There's ads to upgrade on the pages, but they weren't intrusive, so I didn't mind. Also, in an unusual move, Gay Cupid says they do not auto-rebill for any of their memberships.
Let's talk about the various memberships and what they have to offer - they are the free membership, called standard, plus the gold and platinum memberships. First off is the free membership; that allows members to do basic searches, send interest and communicate with paying members, however free members cannot communicate with other free members. Paid members don't see any ads while they browse, can hide their profiles and initiate text messaging. And only platinum members can initiate messages with videos, get access to advanced matching, can add notes to profiles. And platinum members' profiles are highlighted, helping them stand out more.
Gay Cupid is easy to navigate and use, and unlike most sites, almost every guy with at least one pic has a pic of his face, often smiling. There's an interesting selection of men to browse, less male model types and more regular guys, which I found refreshing. Unfortunately, although I live in a very populated area, not many members from within 250 miles of where I live had logged in in the last week or even the last month, which is the least I've seen at any personals site so far. Still, if you're interested in searching for guys at a site that focuses on faces and dating rather than hookups and nude member pics, you could sign up for a free membership and see if you can find some interesting men.
