Mainly British slang term for a homosexual, not a complimentary term though not necessarily meant mean spirited.
A common term to denote a homosexual in British slang. Used quite frequently in the United Kingdom and Australia. Not as well known in North America.
Noteworthy: While not a well known slang term, the release of Queer As Folk did make It more well known. That is the original British release of the show.
There are other terms that were mainly used in the early 20th Century rhyming slang of the Cockneys. Words like Fooper and iron hoof that were used to rhyme with poofter, or poof. Again, also denoting a homosexual.
