Where a person becomes aroused, and satisfies their own needs, without the aid of another person. This isn't just jerking off, but includes anal stimulation, body stimulation, and any other form, that helps a person achieve an orgasm.

Usually a person will accompany such practices by imagining themselves in particular situations, with particular parties. Though not always, usually a good imagination helps improve the practice.

The argument they use is that one's own stimulation is denying the required process of procreating life, that such acts waste the seed, God gave, for the express purpose of increasing the population.
It should also be noted, that for a long time, masturbation* was considered a health risk, again due to Religious Indoctrination, and the acceptance of unsubstantiated medical opinion.

This generally is for those who are aroused, or require, a more extreme form of stimulation, to be satisfied. For example, those who are into bondage, or similar acts, can perform some of this, without the aid of a partner, however the risks are huge.
One can actually perish in such situations, as the practice is done alone, which is not always a good idea. Breath Play is another such 'autoeroticism' practice that is extremely risky to do without another person close at hand. Even then, it is still a highly risky form of stimulation.
