We got a chance recently to talk to Bentley Race, owner of his own long-running gay porn site. He directs his own shoots, as well as often being shooting the pisc and sometimes jumping into the action as one of the performers. And Bentley - or Ben, as he likes to be called - is a really nice guy, so he was happy to answer some questions for us.
So, Ben, what made you decide to start your first adult website?
Ben: In 1998 was saving for a trip from Australia to America and did a little escort work to save money quickly. A photographer friend took some photos and I made a simple website to put them on. Around the same time I met a guy online from San Diego who showed me how to put Mancheck protection on the site. I wasn't very good at the escort work at all, but I enjoyed making the photos. So I kept the website going with regular updates.
What made you start doing some of the photography for the site yourself?
Ben: I have always preferred taking the photos myself. Most of the photos of me were taken with a self timer camera. Only the outdoor photos of me are taken my my mates. It has only been in the past 3 years that I have added other guys and videos to the site. I now have a mate who helps me out with shooting at most of my shoots now.
Who shoots the pics and video when you join your model in a scene?
Ben: For a long time the tripod was doing the shooting. In my day job I spend a lot of time travelling around Australia staying alone in hotel rooms. So I usually get local guys around for shoots with me. I like to shoot some solo stuff and then join in on the action. I've often though about asking one of the hotel staff if they could come hold the camera... but that could be pushing the boundaries :) I have had hotel staff write me and tell me that they recognise their hotels in my shoots, and I should let them know next time I'm there so they can send up some champagne.
How do you find your models?
Ben: In Australia I have profiles on Gaydar and Dudesnude where guys often approach me about doing shoots because they have previously seen my site. Also word of mouth works well here. The guys I shoot always know someone else who wants to model as well. I shoot mostly natural looking Aussie boys which we have plenty of. Occasionally I also get foriegn students who want to make some quick bucks.
What qualities do you look for in a model?
I get guys who I am attracted to. I guess my thinking is that if I find them attractive then someone else will too! I'm a sucker for a cute face and a big dick. I don't really have any rules about body shape, age, hairyness etc. But guys with sex appeal will always win me over. Most of the guys I shoot have never posed naked in front of a camera before. So this is why the style of my shoots are as non-invasive as possible. And most of the guys who have done it want to come back and do it again.
Do you hear from your members?
Ben: I don't get a lot of feedback from my members. I wish I could get more. I placed a tagboard in the members area so they could give instant feedback but they are mostly a quiet lot. I appreciate any comments about technical issues with the site or who they would like to see more off.
What's the funniest thing that ever happened to you on a porn shoot?
Ben: This wasn't funny at the time but I can laugh about it now. I had rented a flashy car and took a mate for a drive in it. We ended up in farmland on the other side of the Melbourne International Airport. The video camera was on a tripod in the middle of the dirt road. My mate Jake was naked on the hood of the car getting blown by me. And occasionally a plane would fly low over head. It wasn't long before I had mistaken the sound of a farmers truck on the road for a low flying plane... we were busted... big time!
Outdoor shoots are absolutely my favourite shoots. Hot sunny days. Naked on the roadside or at the beach and getting horny with some sexy guys. There's nothing better. The video footage shows Jake running to get in the car and me running to get the camera from the middle of the road. The farmer drove past very slowly giving us an evil death stare. Thankfully we were able to get the hell out of there before there was any serious trouble.
What does the future hold in store for Bentley Race - you AND your site?
Ben: I am actually using the BentleyRace site and the business to learn and challenge myself. I love learning how to make better content (photos and video) and to challenge myself to create new ideas for scenes. I am really lucky to have a great bunch of mates who help me out and perform in the shoots.
It is not well known that I work a full time job as a Financial Systems Analyst for a large IT company. So I fit the shoots for BentleyRace into my spare time. Creating BentleyRace and running the site is more of a hobby for me than a business. It is fun seeing it become popular. I'm glad so many people are enjoying the site... even if it is just to have a laugh at the stuff we get up to. The site doubled in size last year and I'm hoping we'll double it again this year.
Later in the year we might travel around the world again looking for new locations and guys to shoot. Travel shooting is always a lot of fun. It's amazing what guys will do for us Aussies !
And for me? I wouldn't mind finding a boyfriend this year... it's time I settled down :)
