Normally, we ('we' meaning 'I') like to take a lighthearted approach to the subject of gay porn because, well, it's gay porn. But the news yesterday that AIM Medical Associates has shuttered was a blow to an industry already under siege.
AIM Medical Associates, formerly the The Adult Industry Medical Health Care Foundation, was the de facto testing center for performers in the adult industry and had been under assault since last December when a number of personal records were made available on the site porn site, PornWikiLeaks.com. And according to LAWeekly.com:
"The leak of patient records via PornWikiLeaks. Some in the industry have argued that the leak could have only come from someone who had access to AIM's online database of performers who have been tested."
(Pictured at right, porn performer Derrick Burts, who tested positive for HIV in December at AIM.)
At the same time, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, headed by Michael Weinstein, has been relentlessly attacking AIM, and the porn industry in general, in their missionary zeal to insure that the porn industry adopts and enforces a strict, condoms-only workplace environment. To that end, he has enlisted the assistance of Cal/OSHA (California Occupational Safety and Health) to help enforce the guide under the rubric of "workplace safety." California state officials have been reluctant to engage in this fight from a lack of resources and an overall unwillingness to get into fights with the porn industry which is a huge source of revenue for the state.
Diane Duke, the president of the Free Speech Coalition, the lobbying arm of the adult entertainment industry, has called the first of several emergency meetings to address the needs and safety of its workers. According to Xbiz.com:
"Last Friday, FSC conducted three separate meetings for producers, agents and performers to gather feedback and discuss options with industry stakeholders. The response from those meetings was successful in gathering suggestions from industry members on which options to pursue and for taking action, the FSC said."
We (and, again, 'we' as in 'I') will keep you abreast of developments as they occur.
